Turbonegro, Akimbo cancel tour dates
Posted by jesse on Monday, March 31, 2008 at 8:50 PM (EDT)
Cooking Vinyl

In the wake of Oslo, Norway's Turbonegro having to cancel their European dates, the band has just announced a cancellation of their US dates in April. Says the band:

It is with great further regret that we will now have to cancel our trip to the US in April to play the west coast shows, most regrettably ’The Coachella Festival’. A huge apology to the US fans and to the promoters, I’m sure that all will understand that this decision wasn’t taken lightly, but it is the right decision for Euroboy. He is in good shape, all considered, but his treatment makes it impossible for him be away for long periods of time and certainly not to be taking long haul flights. We are keeping the European shows from May 2nd forward in place, as this schedule works within the boundaries of his treatment. It’s a delicate situation we find ourselves in, our first priority is Euroboy’s health, we’ll look at everything else when we know that he is well.
Seattle, Washington's Akimbo has had to pull out of all the dates that they were playing the group as well. Jon, who handles the words, bass and vocals, had this to say:
It is with great shame and anguish that harken to thee, bearing tragic news. Turbonegro has cancelled their April west coast tour, and therefore we must do the same. We love all of you people, but frankly there just aren’t enough of you for us to headline The Great American Music Hall.
Akimbo will still play the April 12th date in Seattle, and the April 29th date in Bellingham previously announced here.

Media: Rare 1995 Misfits demo recordings posted online

The Misfits

Joel Gausten, former drummer of Pigface, the Undead and Electric Frankenstein, has posted two Misfits demos from recording sessions in 1995. The lineup is the most interesting part of the recordings, featuring Gausten on drums, Jerry Only on bass, Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein on guitar and Eric Weiss on vocals. The songs were part of an 11-song recording engineered by future drummer Dr. Chud.

You can hear the demos for "Astro Zombies" and "London Dungeon" at Gausten's MySpace page and (conveniently) Gausten has recently published a book detailed his time with the band in his new book Tales of Horror: The History of The Misfits & The Undead.

Trophy Scars announce hiatus
Posted by brian on Monday, March 31, 2008 at 12:15 PM (EDT)
The Death Scene

Trophy Scars has announced an indefinite hiatus due to financial struggles. The hardships came when the band's UK tour was abruptly cancelled. As guitarist/vocalist Jerry Jones said in an initial MySpace bulletin, "We emptied the rest of our band fund to make sure two of our members were able to afford to go over to the UK."

The setback will derail plans for what would've been the band's third full-length, the unfortunately titled Bad Luck, which they were currently demoing. It would have followed up 2006's Alphabet. Alphabets..

The band is currently taking donations at their MySpace page to help them get back on their feet.

You can click Read More for the entire message.

Nick Cave given honorary doctorate
Contributed by shindo. Posted by jesse on Monday, March 31, 2008 at 10:15 AM (EDT)
Anti- Records

Australian native Nick Cave has been awarded an honorary doctorate degree by the Caulfield Campus of Monash University. Cave was a student at the university but had dropped out in the 70s to start Boys Next Door which turned into the legendary The Birthday Party. Said Cave:

I’d come out of Caulfield Grammar School, which was very sports-orientated and to be interested in arts at the time was swimming upstream. To suddenly go into this environment where there were a lot of like-minded people talking about art was incredible for me. I sat around and talked with a lot of third year students in the park and didn’t really hand in a lot of work… but what I learnt from those conversations was enormous. I’m eternally grateful that I failed because it pushed me into a different area. You learn what you love in those years.
Nick Cave and his backing group, The Bad Seeds, have been prepping for the North American release of their new album, Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!. The album is due out April 8, 2008.
