Videos: Broadway Calls: "Midnight Hour" / "Van Rides and High Tides" (Live at The Fest 8)
Posted by Bryne on Monday, November 2, 2009 at 9:00 PM (EST)
Several Punknews.org staff members had the privilege of attending The Fest 8 in Gainesville, FL this past weekend. We were able to capture a lot of great video and over the next several days, we'll be sharing the results of our exploits with all of you.
Tonight's video comes from Broadway Calls, who took a day off from their West Coast tour with Bayside and The Bouncing Souls to fly into Gainesville and play a Sunday matinee set at The Fest. The sizable crowd, hardly weary from two previous days of Festing, displayed their appreciation in the form of repeated stage dives.
In the video the band performs one song from each of their full-lengths: "Midnight Hour" from this year's Good Views, Bad News and "Van Rides and High Tides" from their 2007 self-titled full-length. You can click Read More to check it out.

Undoubtedly the most popular hardcore band based Korea, The Geeks should be one of the first coming to mind when you think of Asian hardcore. Among the “K-Pop” permeating the entire country – Rain, Big Bang, Wondergirls– the substantial hardcore scene causes a great sigh of relief. Celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, The Geeks sit tight on both Korea’s Townhall Records and Florida-based Think Fast! Records. Their brand of positive melodic hardcore does well in both hemispheres. While they rarely get a chance to visit the West, their LP Every Time We Fall is available for your listening pleasure on their Punknews profile page, and they are currently working on a new EP. Recent Korea resident Stephanie Thornton talked with lead singer Ki Seok So about The Geeks’ reputation, the hardcore scene in Korea, and cultural differences playing into the same international scene.

Ben Weasel has posted an update on plans for the next album from Riverdales. According to his blog:
We're doing our final demos next week and recording the album in December for Recess Records. We'll be heading down the home stretch on the mix by the time of the 1/23 show so we'll probably play a couple of the new tunes.
As reported earlier, Dan Vapid has resumed bass duties and Simon Lamb is now a full fledged member of the band and second guitarist.
With new releases from Nirvana coming out this week, the only living member who participated both in Bleach and Live and Reading has been doing some interviews but as both interviewer and subject. In Seattle Weekly, bassist
Krist Novoselic spoke to Dale Crover of Melvins who recorded the first demos for Bleach before Chad Channing recorded the drum tracks which finally appeared on the record.
Krist and Dale talk here and Krist and Chad's conversation is here.

Fred Mascherino (Taking Back Sunday, The Color Fred) and Andy Jackson (Hot Rod Circuit, Death in the Park) have started a new band called Initials. The band came into existence when Mascherino decided he wanted to do a full-band again as opposed to his current solo endeavour in The Color Fred.
Mascherino made the following statement in an AP interview:
We're just working on those one-by-one and trying to get the record done and out. If we can do a tour before then, we're going to. We've already gotten offers, but we're looking to go out and open for one of our friends just to get the word out. I'd say we won't have a record until Spring."
The band currently has several shows booked, and a demo song on their MySpace.

The Bouncing Souls have posted their November song-of-the-month. The latest is "Big Eyes" and the band commented on the track:
The lyrics to "Big Eyes" was a classic Souls collaboration. When we collaborate on lyrics it can make the song meaning a bit vague because the original inspirations came from different heads. Somehow we follow a musical/lyrical thread that makes sense in some indescribable way and they fit together. I was gone for a couple of days from the writing session and when I came back the guys had created the chorus lyrics and music to this song.
After hearing what the guys had written with Ted, I imagined a girl of about twenty moving to a big city to start a life on her own. I saw Los Angeles in my mind, with its high aspirations and troubled dark side. The verse music came next and the verse lyrics evolved over time. To me, the song is not exactly about anything. Maybe its talking about wanting a friend. Maybe its about the search for a real friend.
Check it out for purchase here. A stream usually appears on their Facebook Profile but hasn't yet.

Thorp Records has signed New England based metal/hardcore act Hell Within. The label will release their new full length in May of 2010.
Thorp co-founder Duane Miller commented
Hell Within plays a killer blend of metal, thrash and hardcore that is a natural extension of the more aggressive albums we’ve released over the last ten years. Plus, as Thorp Records is the home of HARD WORKING MUSIC, we have tremendous respect for the tireless work ethic J.J., Tony, Derek, Isaias and Derek have demonstrated, playing hundreds of shows every year.
The band is currently writing and plans to enter Damaged Studios in January of 2010 with producer Pete Rutcho (Bury Your Dead, Seamless, Unearth). You can check out a video of the band commenting on the signing below.
