Videos: How Dare You: "Eat at Charlie's" (live at The Fest 8)
Posted by Bryne on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at 10:15 PM (EST)
Better late than never, our Fest 8 videos continue tonight with a live performance from Orlando, FL outfit How Dare You. Despite some power issues at The Venue pushing back set times on Saturday afternoon, the crowd continued to wait outside the doors (have your bags ready!) and once inside, raged hard to the band's brand of melodic punk rock.
"Eat at Charlie's" comes from the band's 2008 full-length Comfort Road. The band's newest release is a split 7" with The Knockdown, out now on Kiss of Death Records.

Melodic hardcore band I Refuse have seen a lot of action over this past summer. The band enjoyed a North American tour, which included dates in Canada and the United States. In addition, they recorded and released their newest EP, Speaks Fork-Tongued, a recording replete with as many political overtones as chugging guitars. Self-proclaimed "foodie" and guitar player for I Refuse, Dominic Maggiolo, gives us some insight behind the band's moral underpinnings and ruminates over what it means to be a modern-day punk rocker in this candid discussion with Brandon Campbell.

Constants are set to record with Jesu and Godflesh member, Justin Broadrick. The band is currently on a fall tour supporting their album, The Foundation, The Machine, The Ascension, and they have begun demoing with plans to begin tracking later this year in guitarist/vocalist Will Benoit's burgeoning recording studio, located in a historic barn deep in the woods of Connecticut.. They commented:
Justin remixed a song for the Japanese version of our last album (Stiff Slack Records), and we were really into the direction he took the music. After talking with him for a while, we asked if he'd be interested in mixing our next record, and he offered to produce it. The material so far is faster and heavier than anything we've done yet, and it's exciting for us to be working in a fresh and isolated environment, free from city distractions. Presenting our ideas to Justin, who has had such an impact on modern music - we've upped our level of intensity and focus. Surprisingly the process has been more inspiring than intimidating so far.
Broadrick began his musical career in grind-pioneers Napalm Death before forming industrial act Godflesh and then post-hardcore/shoegaze outfit Jesu.

Jason Mazzola, singer for Cloak/Dagger recently spoke to Decibal Magazine about his top 5 hardcore albums. He omitted Bad Brains, Black Flag, Minor Threat, and 7Seconds because he said
they belong in a category of their own. Instead, he mentioned second wave acts like Turning Point, Youth of Today, In My Eyes, Gorilla Biscuits and Cro-Mags.

Radiohead proposes bandwidth throttling for downloaders

In an interesting interview with ITN News, Ed O'Brien of Radiohead suggests that bandwidth throttling (the practice of limiting the quantity of data a sever transmits and/or accepts within a specified period of time) may be a viable method to combat illegal downloading and filesharing. You can click Read More to check out the video.
Radiohead made waves in the worlds of music and technology by initially releasing their last record, In Rainbows, through their website as an optional 'pay-what-you-want' download. The move, initially thought by many to be a sign of sea change in the industry, was quickly revealed by the band to be a stunt thought up by their management, and the band drew more criticism when they elected to sign with another traditional label for physical distribution of the record, and then disappointment when the band revealed they would not reinstate the 'pay-what-you-want' option for their next record.
What do you think? Is bandwidth throttling an answer in the fight against illegal filesharing, or is it just a way of punishing everyone for the actions of the few?

No Doubt suing over misuse of image in Guitar Hero 5

Like the controversial use of Kurt Cobain in Guitar Hero 5, the (still living) members of No Doubt are suing due to how they are portrayed and used in the semi-sequel, Band Hero. As with Cobain, the game allows you to use the No Doubt avatars throughout the game, both with their own songs and with other band's material.
Gossip site TMZ reports that "the band is particularly pissed" that Gwen Stefani's animated image can channel a male voice to sing "Honky Tonk Woman" by the Rolling Stones ... a song which contains lyrics about "having sex with prostitutes."
Activision responded to this controversy similarly to the Cobain incident, saying:
Activision has a written agreement to use No Doubt in Band Hero – an agreement signed by No Doubt after extensive negotiations with its representatives, who collectively have decades of experience in the entertainment industry ... Activision believes it is within its legal rights with respect to the use and portrayal of the band members in the game and that this lawsuit is without merit.

Toronto's Protest the Hero have announced several Canadian holiday shows in which they will perform their 2008 album, Fortress, in its entirety. Frontman Rody Walker explained:
We're playing a couple nights in Toronto and the surrounding area and there's also a Halifax show, and a Newfoundland show. We're skipping the rest of the east coast... because there are too many rocks and trees... and Arif's deadly allergic to rock of any form with the exceptions of prog and fraggle.
