Punknews.org FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Category: Main » 6 Technical Questions

Answer:

  • Do you guys support content syndication like RSS feeds?

  • Yes we do. Punknews.org has RSS feeds compliant with three different versions of the specification to make it easiest for people to support it.

The 2.0 spec is definitely the best, so if your parser supports it, definitely go for that. But otherwise, 1.0 and 0.92 feeds are available too:

  • Do you have a Mozilla Search Plugin?

  • Do you support ATOM syndication feeds?

  • Do you support mobile phones and BlackBerry devices?

  • We sure do. There is a special, super-lightweight version of the site can you can visit at http://wap.punknews.org/.

  • Do you support the iPhone?

  • Yes! As of September 23rd, 2007, Punknews.org has a special browsing mode for the Apple iPhone. You don't need to do anything special, just visit the site from the iPhone and it'll be formatted for your screen.

Turn your phone sideways to get the best experience.

  • Do you support the PSP browser?

  • Yes! As of the launch day, July 27th, 2005, Punknews.org has a special browsing mode for the Sony PSP. You don't need to do anything special, just visit the site from the PSP and it'll be formatted for your screen.

  • How are the shows in the “Today's Shows” sidebar selected?

  • The shows in the sidebar are provided by our friends at Trustkill Shows, and they explained that the selection is largely random and that there is no special weighting. The same listing is available on their site.

  • What does the new site support?

  • As far as browsers, pretty much any browser will work, but you really should run one of the following to get the whole experience: Mozilla Firefox 0.8, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 and 6.0, Apple Safari 1.2, Omniweb 5.0 beta 4 Mac::IE 5.2 and Opera 7.

As a baseline for your screen resolution, a realistic minimum is 800x600. It will be pretty cramped at anything smaller. You won't get horizontal scrollbars unless you're narrower than 500 though.

We tried to test under as many platforms and browsers as we could, so things should work the same or better than they did with the old site.

  • What system does Punknews.org use?

  • At the very beginning, we used PHP Slash, and then after a year or two, we migrated to PHP Nuke.

After some time, we realized that none of the "off the shelf" programs did exactly what we needed, so in 2003, we started rewriting most of the site to fit the kind of goals we had.

The current site uses some code from PHP Nuke, but about 90% has been rewritten or changed dramatically to suit Punknews.org specifically.
