Help: Reviews
Here are some pointers for writing a review for the site:
- Try to write at least 250 words. If you want to share your thoughts on
something people spent time writing, performing and recording, you should try
to articulate those thoughts, be they positive or negative
- Song by Song reviews aren't much fun to read; certain albums can use them (like compilations)
but generally speaking it's a lot more interesting to read paragraphs than something that
feels like you took notes in a chemistry lecture.
- Try to fill in as much information as possible. The release year and label are pretty important
- Five stars is for the classics; think about whether you can imagine yourself listening to this in
five years. Or Ten years. Some albums (like Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables or Milo Goes to College) have
stood the test of time, and deserve that rating. A band that has been around for five minutes probably doesn't...
yet.
- Don't sweat it if English isn't your first language. You probably speak English better than most
people speak your native language. Give it a shot, and the editors will help out where they can.
- Please don't write in all capitals. It's really hard to read; ditto for el33t sp3ak. Old people
like our reviews editor aren't down with all that cellphone/IM lingo.
- If you're going to mention song titles, it's best to put them in double quotes, like
“Teenagers From Mars”
- And if you mention an a different album, it's nice to put it in italics, and even better,
link it to the review of that record. For example:
Everything Sucks
- This is in the FAQ, but it bears repeating. As a policy, we won't post reviews before the release
date.
If this doesn't answer your question, you may want to take a look at the FAQ or contact us.
