Dead Kennedys announce indefinite touring hiatus
Contributed by shindo. Posted by justin on Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 9:00 PM (EDT)
Alternative Tentacles Records

The beleaguered Dead Kennedys have decided to hang up their touring boots. With both bassist Klaus Flouride and drummer D.H. Peligro sidelined with health issues, the band is putting themselves on a self-described "indefinite touring hiatus." Flouride spoke on his departure earlier this week. Guitarist East Bay Ray will form a new band with the Wynona Riders' Skip, who was singing for the Kennedys on their last two tours. While the band has not announced a formal breakup the did phrase their recent years in a retrospective light:

"Earlier this year, in May 2008, Dead Kennedys were awarded a Gold Record in both the United States and the United Kingdom for "Give Me Convenience Or Give Me Death." "In God We Trust Inc. EP." was also certified Gold in the United Kingdom. This is significant achievement because the recordings were all released on independent labels.

On Dead Kennedys' recent UK and Californian tours, the audience reception was enthusiastic and genuine (including two new songs performed by the band). Thanks to those that came to those shows and for their encouragement."
Following the messy legal battles of the late 90s, the Dead Kennedys reunited in 2001 without vocalist and songwriter Jello Biafra. Ray, Peligro, and Fluoride performed with Dr. Know frontman (and former child star) Brandon Cruz singing. Cruz left the band in May of 2003 and was replaced by Jeff Penalty (a punk filmmaker known for documentaries on the Bouncing Souls, Youth Brigade and most recently NOFX's "Backstage Passport"). Penalty split with the band in March of 2008 and now moonlights as the vocalist to Black Fag. With Penalty and Peligro both leaving the band in this period, the group most recently featured Wynona Riders singer Skip and Translator drummer Dave Scheff.

Streams: Pygmy Lush: "Mount Hope"
Posted by aubin on Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 4:00 PM (EDT)
Lovitt Records

Pygmy Lush What happens when members of influential hardcore bands like City Of Caterpillar, Majority Rule, malady and pg.99 get together? Well, something very different than you might expect, and that something is Pygmy Lush.

Their first record, Bitter River (Robotic Empire), was noise-punk tracks mixed in with some of the quieter songs. Those more restrained songs, which had at first been an aside, began to over take the set: "Still filled to the brim with a sense of abandon, only here they have put down their angst for introspection, traded their aggression for a slow grit. "

You can check out the album on their Punknews.org Profile.

Bloc Party talks about new album, "unexpected" release
Posted by aubin on Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 2:00 PM (EDT)
Warner Music Group

Bloc Party Bloc Party's bassist Gordon Moakes spoke to Pitchfork about the band's decision to release their album without the normal 2-3 month lead up that most bands take:

The recording effectively was finished in July. So not a huge amount of time ago. It was mixed fairly recently, so I got a final master CD probably last week. [With the leak of the previous album], the drawback for me with that was that it just felt like it dribbled out a bit, you know. You want a sense of occasion, I suppose, when you put out a record. But I'm very much of the opinion that it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Certainly, as a listener to music, I don't necessarily go looking for illegal versions of records that aren't out yet. You know, a reasonably legitimate way to get used to music is to download it. It's a very good thing to download if it's legal, but I think it's just one of those new phenomena, the dissemination of music, I suppose.

You can find the rest of the interview here and three new songs from Intimacy posted on their myspace page. The album itself can be purchased digitally for $10.00 via this page.
