Review by: Aubin See others by this writer theused.net (link) Only registered users can post comments Published on August 30th 2002 "A poppier Thursday." The friend who suggested The Used's self-titled debut to me described them as such. Now, don't get me wrong, I like Thursday, but that isn't the most ringing of endorsements. Of course, after listening to the record a dozen times or so, I have a slightly longer, but, I feel, more accurate description. "A much poppier Thursday" Ok, I kid a little, but it is a pretty fair description. The band does play the volleys of hyper-melodic and intense screaming like that aforementioned band, but also pulls off some incredibly catchy anthemic rock. The opening track, Maybe Memories is an intense pop song, where the vocalist switches from screams to singing mid breath. The record dabbles in radio friendly rock, and Buried Myself Alive could be a huge hit, with it's soaring, heavy chorus and it's gentle verses. The record does run the spectrum though, with the riveting back and forth of tracks like A Box of Sharp Objects and Bulimic, which bite as hard as anything by Planes Mistaken for Stars and soothe as much as anything from Taking Back Sunday. However, it isn't a perfect record, mostly because of the lack of variety. Near the end of the record, I caught myself wondering if I had heard some of the songs before. The song, that in my opinion, should have closed the album is the graceful "On My Own" a heavily produced acoustic track with strings, though the singers screams come across as a sharp contrast, and make the song more powerful. Overall, the Used's Reprise debut is hardly original, but it makes up for it's lack of originality in pure energy. The lead vocalist is among the best I've ever heard, and it's a catchy and emotional record. Fans of Thursday and Taking Back Sunday will love this.

nice. nice. yes. Bert is AMAZING! and his voice is mezmerising!! i'd do anything for those men!!! i love green and yellow so much! I'll say this album is not really great but it is not bad. I would still give it up for the used. no its not Bert's voice is amazing but they could do a lot better. This cd kicks ass. Berts vocals are AWESOME! whats the need for harsh words people? lets not pop a vein getting upset at people we don't know over an album; it doesn't matter what the album is. the used r a fuckin awesome band dont bag em they rule!!!!!! The Used fucking own everyone "fuck you emo, get away from the punk and hardcore scene you crybabies" fuck you emo, get away from the punk and hardcore scene you crybabies flavor of the month emo band. your 15 are up. next. This is 'good', but it screams of Finch. Thursday is much more disjointed lyrically and start/stop/start/stop tempo wise. I would go as far as to call The Used a poor man's Finch... it seems the poor man doesn't have too bad of a deal. Solid album. No real blockbusters....Taste of Ink got old real quick, but there are several other catchy songs that deserve much cuddles. Check this album out. The only reason I would ever wish death upon you is if you said that Taking back sunday sucked. the used is amazing and so is thursday, tbs is alright, they repeat the same lines in their lyrics too much this is good. the singer is great in my opinion, he goes from soft and pretty to loud and screaming, and he does them all good. there really isn't a bad song on here. "From the desk of AcoustiCClouD...who lost his password..." the used is like the greatest band! i dunno wut some people have against them. They made it, thats all that matters. I can't stand taking back sunday and finch but the used rules. Later I love this album and I disagree with almost everything you said. "Maybe Memories" a pop song? No I don't think so. Pull your head out of your ass next time before you review another cd. By the way, I don't like Finch OR Thursday at all. I think they suck, yet I still love The Used. Fuck the people that talk shit. Let's see you start a band, let's see you do something with your life you fuckin losers. the used = hardcore? ok...about as hardcore as britney spears. they blow. If you have heard the track "a box of sharp objects" you'd fucking love these guys. They're lead singer can scream and sing that's rare. Anyway pick up the cd if you like the hardcore stuff. I borrowed this from my college's radio station, and it is horrible. i never said that std and thursday sound alike. i think i laid out tbs's sound pretty well in my last post. the strokes are awesome dont' get me started on how much cock anti flag suck. shit. pussy 16 year old, 'my first punk band' highschool educated political piss punk w/ no originality or bite. fuck them. the used are good. they are not as good as thursday or tbs, but fans of such bands will like them. i bit overproduced, and lyrically not as cool as the other bands in this genre, but they are still alot better than the vines/strokes/hives when it comes to mainstream shit dorks at this site listen too. yea fuck garage rock. and anti flag "dont buy this shit, its emo" - Anti Flag Well, guy also said STD and Thursday sound alike. Can you explain that? you can't listen to TBS and STD's Through Being Cool and not hear similarities. TBS takes STD's melodies and poppiness and combines them w/ thursday's dynamics. thats all it is when you break it down. are implying STD, thursday, and TBS all sound alike? I hope not i think its funny when people compare bands to taking back sunday as though a) they were good and b) they didn't sound like Saves the Day/Thursday themselves. PMFS is amazing, Thursday is great, and TBS sucks both my nuts, as for these guys, maybe if the whole cd was as good as sharp objects.... Simple as this...... they are a shitty band with a well produced cd. Their live show is really weak, the first national act I've ever seen get booed off the stage in buffalo earlier this may. very good review aubin, BUT, very bad band as well damn fine review my man, damn fine. better review than the first one posted on this cd... more accurate... i like this cd/band, seems a lot of people don't... ohwell Planes Mistaken For Stars is better than everyone. |
