Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Descendents. The Pixies. With influences like that how could this album go wrong?

Digger is a four piece band out of Penn. They play what I like to call dirty pop-punk. It is not as hard as Dillinger Four, but not as poppy as your 182s, NFGs, or 41s. They play fast and aggressive yet its very melodic and fun music ala Whippersnapper. I actually enjoyed this record a lot and here is the reasons.

The lyrics are MOSTLY ABOUT GIRLS, and I know how most of you aren't that crazy about that. Although they are mostly about lost love, and heartbreaks its done in a very creative manner.

"I swear that I'll grow up once these nightmares disappear. Centennials and keystones frequent flyer miles from here."

Shown there is a good example of what I'm talking about when I say they take time to write the lyrics. They are fun, catchy, and just plain good words for your ears. Now to the best part...

Musically this group of guys are very VERY talented at what they do. Even the most hardcore kid will appreaciate the guitar playing and overall shear ability of Digger. Some of their songs are actually pretty complex to the point that is sounds like a neverending guitar solo. The drummer is not so bad himself as he lines up a miraculous set of complicated beats throughout this disc. To add to all that they even add a keyboard in some songs which brings the music over the edge and gives it a different feel. Thats not all either. The lead vocalist which there is two mind you, plays acoustic guitar in some of the songs.

I'm going to leave you with a list of the reasons why you may like this band, or reasons why you may not. So here it goes:

You Will MOST LIKELY enjoy this band if:
1. You like catchy music
2. You like to have a good time while listening to music wheather its drinking, bowling, or attending a worst enemies funeral.
3. You are looking for something to make numbered bands realize they suck, and then attempt to quit.
4. You want to shut up the teenie boppers.
5. You like when musicans play their instruments.
6. You are down about getting dumped or shot down by "that girl."
7. You like creative songwriting and thoughtful lyrics.
8. You like pop-punk.
9. You like sad songs.
10. And finally if you are willing to open your mind for something original and new to add to your cd case.

You will MOST LIKELY NOT enjoy them if:
1. You worship HATEBREED.
2. You are one of those hardcore punk kids that only listen to Minor Threat and think any kind of pop punk is "pussy bullshit."
3. You don't like different music.
4. You've had some major break down with a girl that has left you damaged for life, and the next guy that erects that situation you will kill.
5. You are passed out.
6. You are a "real punk" and still claim you saw the Ramones when you were twelve, but now are at the age of thirteen.
7. You don't like fast music.
8. You like the production of cds to be very polished.
9. You like Nu Metal and that is all.
10. You don't want to hear another song about a girl, but will continue to listen to Anti-Flag who doesn't have enough songs about politics.

All I can really say is that this album is top notch pop punk with some guitar playing that will blow your mind. Now get out there and check them out!

Their best and sadly last album....
These guys came the closest to perfecting pop punk after the Descendents invented it. They also were great live. R.I.P. Digger

if you read the 2001 warped tour program and in the H20 section they mention about h20 combining different styles from there area and one of the styles mentioned was the PA power pop scene. being from PA myself have realized that atleast 60% of the bands around here fall into this genre. But digger really stands out as one of the grandfathers in this area coming out in 1995, when bands like ten foot pole and sam I am were all the rage. but, where this band excels is their vocals there isn't really any major stand outs on this record, but just take a listen to power bait era stuff fun, catchy, emotional, and most of all listen for when they all sing different parts of a verse and/or chorus at the same time. now this is what I call a "GREAT" band. if you don't like the cd you will enjoy the live show

what a good review! unfortuanatly, digger is just too half assed for me, and they play around me (pittsburgh) every other week anyway. great guitars, but vocals are pretty weak. gemini is cool, off plea for peace. if i have a shitload more money i'll buy this, but bad astronaut, transplants take priority.

Job well done Digger!!! I haven't listened to this band since powerbait and I'm not the least disappointed. I agree with the comment that guitars aren't the only thing that makes a band good, but give them some respect. The guitars on keystone are truly amazing. I guess I'm going to have go buy their two other records now.
P.S. I'm just a geek in love with Digger!

    My Score:

cool, but i dont think playing guitar has anything to do with you "knowing" what is better than anyone else, becasue the technical aspects of musicianship should be abondoned all together, play from the heart, not what the books say.

    My Score:

It really is if you look at it from a pop punk standpoint. Sure its not totally different but they have their own sound. Tell me another pop punk band that has the same guitar hooks and drum beats. Ive played guitar for 10 years now and counting and after listening to this cd I have to agree with the reviewer saying the guitars are strong. Very hard to play. Anyway they do sound like Brand New a little in my opinion but Brand New was also after these guys. Good band, Funny review. -bobino

I respect your opinions on this site because 1. they are usually intelligent and 2. i agree with them most of the time.
Now Digger isnt anything revoulutionary or mind blowing (i.e. Refused) but they do not sound like an every day pop punk band. They may not have the greatest lyrics but they are still sincere and somewhat complex. The musical talent of these guys is amazing. Like I said in my review the guitars are played very complex. Anyway anyone heard the new Good Charlotte. Seriously is that some kind of joke!!!???? In the book Joey writes a letter explaining why he is punk. You have got to be kidding me...

I find it quite amusing that you said you will like this album if you like "different" sounding music and that you'll like it if you have an
"open mind". This isn't "Conufusion is Sex" by Sonic Youth...its freakin digger. Really inaccessable tunes? I was sent this cd to review and MADE myself listen to the whole thing so I do know what this sounds like...I assure you that the lyrics are trite and the music generic. If you have an open mind for watered down garbage, it comes highly recommended.

These guys have one of the truly great punk songs in my opinion: "I Want My Hat Back." It' kind of lame but he sounds so serious. Wonderful song, check it out if you ever have the chance.
