Reviews

In nearly sexually climatical anticipation did this reviewer purchase Fairweather's Alaska. Equal Vision has hyped this release as angular and aggressive. One can picture in glee the hanging of every 14 year-old in baggy shorts and clumsily large skate shoes hang their heads, tipping their Hurley caps even more so fashionably wayward.

Buzz surrounded the much delayed release as the band feverishly toured. Upon conversing with the actual musicians, they nod in concord at the SAVES THE DAY-esque quality of the previous attempt. Citing it specifically as a production flaw, the band promises a brutal onslaught, a proverbial declaration of war upon If They Move, Kill 'em....

Dissappointment abounds.

Perhaps it was the scruff that sprinkled his neck and cheeks, the reassuring internet hype and my boyish quality of actually believing this could be an innovative release, but Alaska takes not its cues from the expected TWELVE HOUR TURN or THE BLOOD BROTHERS but vocal chops deeply influenced by AFI. The anticipated progression is limited to Line 6 Christmas presents and the realization of minor chords and time signatures outside of 4/4. At times the lyrical obscurity is forced and contrived while other times resorting to themes seeming out of place.

Nevertheless, progression is evident. The vocals are under control as the classic "balls-in-a-vise" range is well defined. The guitars have J. Robbins' signature crystal-clear crack and the new found usage of dynamic percussion carries the most solid parts of the EP.

This sophomore release overall contains no gutteral breakdowns, climatic crescendos or strong lyrical impressions. It refuses to lay down and play emo, nor does it have the bitterness and brutality to acheive the quality they claim they were striving for. The outcome is a spongy attempt at aggression, not as intelligent as Equal Vison bro's COHEED AND CAMBRIA, and lacking the machismo of label mates TIME IN MALTA.

May FAIRWEATHER realize their flaws and take the necessary steps to progress in the humble opinion of the reviewer: increased focus on structure and songmanship and less cake fatty.

In my opinion, which are just like assholes since everyone has one, I think that the reviewer was trying to make them self sound so educated and quite knowledgeable about the indy music scene. In the review, the reviewer is very loquacious and sometimes it is hard to follow due to the stream of conscience type writing. Yes, this album is different from If they move, which is a good thing, since it shows the growth of a band. However, I would like to hear more than four songs. As for Saves the Day comparison, I can see it in the voice and melodic hardcore edge. Like, I said in the beginning everyone has an opinion and if you have the time you should give this album a spin. This way you can give your opinion and if you like, it’s a bonus and if you don't you can always sell it to a used cd store. Peace.

That review is fucking worthless. Academic? Musically inclined? Ask anybody who knows anything about music and what it takes to have the balls to make it, and they will tell you that this is a great record. Anybody reading this review should check out the record for themselves, rather than applauding some fuck for bashing a band, and insulting them to boot. What the fuck is that all about? Use a search engine and read any other review of this record, they are all better than this one. Reviewer- GET FUCKED.

    dear reviewer,
i would like to ask you a few questions about your comments on the new fairweather record. first of all, i'd like to clear up what you exactly meant with your closing comment. "less cake fatty"? if you are in any way referring to the appearance of any member of the band then you sir are the biggest piece of shit i have ever had the bad fortune of running into. anyone who is worth their salt in the independent music community knows better then to take stabs at other people for the way they look. would you so readily make that comment about d. boon from the minutemen, or would that be taboo? if i met you i would probably consider punching your fucking jaw loose but would be too busy vomiting in your face to care. you have no business reviewing music with an attitude like yours. if i have for some reason misread your comment then i humbly apologize. my second question is about the bands that you so apparenty name dropped in a feeble attemt to sound musically diverse and informed...if you're trying to bring up bands that have any credibility to angular or percussive rock, bring up some that people have fucking heard of...who the hell are the blood brothers or twelve hour turn? have you got any true sense of history of this style of music? ever heard of louisville ky or chicago? or for christs sake washington dc, where the band is from? honestly, i dont get it.
get a clue, and congratulations for knowing about line 6 effects...you're a real music prodigy. fuck you very much.

I still don't hear it, even in the vocals. The only comparison l can hear is two teenage guys singing nasally. That's it. I think that Fairweather's singer is much better. Listen to the end of "Southstreet, 1 am" and compare that with any Saves the Day acoustic track. I choose those because there's less fuzz between you and the singer. Mixed within the track I can see a tonal similarity, but in no way do I think they sound the same. Fairweather's singer is much more talented for my 10 dollars. Just as a heads up, I'm not trying to start anything with anybody...just curious what others think.

the main comparison is in the vocal stylings...check it out...both those dorks sound the same...exactly the same

    My Score:

For the past two years I've heard people comparing Fairweather to Saves the Day, and I'm sorry to say, I don't totally agree. I can see comparisons made between two melodic punk-oriented bands with hardcore tendencies, but other than that, I just don't see it. Lyrically, different. Their guitar work, quite different. Better, tighter bass/drum work on "If They Move..." than most Saves the Day work. I just could never confuse the two like I could a lot of the other bands out there right now. I'm not making fun of Saves the Day and I'm not too cool to say that I've got all of their records, but I just don't see the comparisons here.

While I did think this was a really good and informative review, I'm sitting here listening to twelve Hour Turn and I can't imagine that the saves the day er, Fairweather album I heard a few summers ago sounds ANYTHING like twelve hour turn...if they do, then goddamn did they change...but still, I don't see why the reviewer thought that's what they'd sound like...weird...

"Young. Brash. Hopefull." is one of the best songs ever, and it's off of "If They Move...Kill Them." I wish they still wrote songs like that. However, this EP is very, very good.

    My Score:

Why you would think they would progress to sound like twelve hour turn or the blood brothers makes NO sense. I'm assuming you just wanted some cred though, using such cool bands to name drop. To say that they took verbal chops from Davey Havok means your ears are defunct. While now way is this EP wonderful it shows much improvement from the saves the day cover album they put out a couple years back.

I have not heard the ep, but I do own If they move..kill them, and that cd is pretty good for a young band, minus the youthful vocals this cd is very good, not the best by far but good, and i'd like to hear this ep.

It took me about a week to get used to this EP. I had been expecting another If They Move... Kill Them, which was foolish to do. At first i was disappointed with it, but now I like it just as much as the full-length. Of course there are going to negative opinions on this release, but i really think it deserves a much higher score than a 4.

My only complaint is that this EP is too short.

    My Score:

i really like this cd and i think that next record will be even better. i think that no matter what fairweather does they're always going to be pigeonholed because of the first record and the singers voice. i admire fairweather a lot though, they realize that they can and should do something different. i think that takes a lot of balls.

Stellar review for a rather blah band. Honestly I think they would be pretty good with a different singer.

I actually like the newer direction. They had to get away from what they were doing before, you know? Let's face it, they would have drowned face-first in this scene if they didn't do something. I could do without some of the hey's and some of the guitar effects, but for the most part I'm keen on it. The catchy parts aren't as catchy as they could be, but I still hum some of the tunes.
