Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Well, it was only a matter of time that the other 2/3s of the Alkaline Trio did split CDs, as Matt Skiba's split with Kevin Seconds came out on Asian Man a month ago. Little did anyone suspect that former Trio drummer Mike Felumlee would be doing a split *with* Trio bassist Dan Andriano - apparently the bad blood within the band is contained between Mike and Matt [so the rumor goes]. But anyways, enough drama, onto the music:

Mike and Dan each contribute three "solo" songs, but whereas on Skiba's split he played all instruments, Mike and Dan share responsibilities. Eli Caterer [of Smoking Popes/Duvall fame] backs up Mike on his three cuts, the slow "Something Better" [this could've been heard on "My So Called Life" back in the mid-nineties], the punkish "Sunshine" [a harkoning back to Mike's Smoking Popes days if I ever heard one], and "As Long As We're Here" [the best drummer-penned ballad since KISS's "Beth"]. Felumlee's contributions to this split are lightyears ahead of his solo album that came out earlier this year, as it seems like both his songwriting chops and his musical abilities have advanced plenty. One thumb up to to Mike's half of the split, now on to Danny's contributions.

Dan's three songs, all backed by former Slapstick and Tuesday bandmate Rob Kellenberger on drums, kick off with "Way Too Many," a slow, Tuesday-esque diddy which Andriano croons his way through. The harmonized chorus of "Woooooooooooah" is just killer, and shows me who the real singing talent is in the Alkaline Trio. This song is the spicy jam of the CD thus far. Next up is "Lucky Smoke Rings," which is also very Tuesday-esque [sensing a pattern here?], and, while slower and simpler musically than I would like, it's still a good track and helps prove Andriano as someone who could theoretically go on a successful solo career [unlike Skiba's mediocre contributions to his split CD]. The CD finishes up with Dan and Rob re-doing Tuesday's "Let The Stars Play" [hell, he wrote it, I guess he can do whatever he wants] and speeding the hell out of it. This song sounds great on the "Freewheelin'" LP as a slow acoustic waltz, but it sounds even better as a less-than-2-minute romp though all the ideas in Danny's emotional-pop-punk bag of tricks. It ends the EP on a bang, and proves to me that Dan's songwriting abilites have yet to fade.

All in all, this is an EP documenting two of Chicago's most well-known musicians, and is most definitely worth your hard earned cash [for the Tuesday cover alone, if nothing else].

Calling people retards is real intelligent. I hope these guys are really proud of the people that follow them. I really think the whole idea of this record is silly. I do give Mike F. credit for replying in a nice way to things, but I hope he says something to his fans about using ignorance to back him up.

Alkaline is still better than s lot of crap out there now, but yes they're not what they used to be. Solo albums aren't for rockstars. I bet hardly anyone is going to buy this, not enough where they'll make so much money you could call it a marketing scheme. What a dickhead.

alkaline blows ass now. had they not gotten huge egos and kicked out 2 drummers for no reason, then maybe they could have done something creative. but after hearing 2 cd's being combined and turned into a 3rd really pisses me off. they're one of few bands that managed to go way down hilla fter only 3 records

This record is complete crap and so is the whole idea of it. Get a life Mike Felumlee/Dan Andriano find another way to stroke your egos. 3 songs each and ones a Tuesday cover? Marketing at its best once again. If somebody isn’t going to do it right maybe they shouldn’t do it at all. In the case of this record there is no point to it. The Matt Skiba one was bad enough, Dan Andriano could have at least been more creative and done something different. This is the current generation of punk rock? SOLO ALBUMS ARE ROCK STAR BULLSHIT! Think of something new you dicks.

Like it or not unless you're from Chicago and saw alkaline back in the begining before they got bigger they were much better before. Live, recorded, with glen porter they were so much better pre-from here to infirmary. There was nothing like seeing them at the fireside bowl a few years ago. Eat shit if you don't beleive me.

    My Score:

The bottom line is, no one is trying to act cool saying glen porter is the best drummer of A3. Comming from Chicago and seeing them play back when they started and seeing their progression and listening to all their releases it's pretty easy to see they've gone downhill and that's partially cause of glen's absense. He was amazing live.

Hey, she took him to the lake is my favorite of his songs. It depends, i think they are equal, but Dan hasn't written a shitty song like Matt has (cmon, stupid kid was a weak song, and hell yes was left off the album for a reason). Musically, Dan usually tries more different things as far as within his own sound.

As long as the next album's lyrics make sense ill be happy.

and to the dork under this post...you don't even own every alkaline trio album...you should shut up since you don't know a goddamn thing...what dan songs have you heard? "She took him to the lake" and "another innocent girl?" Otherwise, Dan's songs are far superior...why don't you check out ALL of the trio's songs and come back here when you're finished?

As Scott has stated this split is FAR superior to the Skiba solo stuff, which as much as it hurts to admit...SUCKED HARD. The lyrics were trite and the music sounded like something on Shining Time Station (or the poppier tracks on "The Places You've come to fear the most"...don't know which one is worse) I was shocked to see how great Mike sounds behind the mike and I personally champion his side of the split. The best buy for 10 bucks going around these days. (Unless you want to count that mindfuck that is Thursday-5 stories falling....please note sarcasim) P.S. Derek just doesn't do it for me...I saw all 3 drummers play and although I'm not from Chicago so my opinion might not matter as much (rolls eyes), I personally Mike did the best job behind the kit. Not to mention the freakin guy LOOKED like a skeleton.

this reminds me how of how all the blink-182 fans think scott raynor was the best drummer. people should realize that it doesn't make you any cooler to know one of the old drummers. derek might be one of the best drummers the trio have had in a long time. he brings back some fire to the band's live set.

...and this album smokes. i really liked the new full-band version of lucky smoke rings.

    My Score:

Mike fit so well in alk3, saying he is only the drummer shows right away you dont know what you're talking about. Glenn was good, but I've always been a Felumlee fan from the Popes/trio/duvall, he is quite a talent.

Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at 8:24 PM (EST)
    My Score:

No one could do what glen porter did. He brought a style that fit the bands overall sound and helped make it what it was. He played a fairly complex style that wasn't as typical punk rock sounding as the second two. I do think that since his leaving, A3 hasen't been the same, but it's also because a lot of the songs have gotten more generic and lost that emotional rawness they once had. Plus matt seems to recycle his lyrics more than ever. Their best stuff is still the first 2 CDs and the self titled one.

    My Score:

"It wasn't like he was an original member"

and would you say the same thing if Dan left the alkaline trio? He's not an original member, but just as important as Glenn was...honestly, since Glenn left (or got kicked out) after "Maybe I'll Catch Fire" the trio just haven't been the same...

at least Mike was part of one of the best chicago bands of all time before joining the trio...I'll admit Derek is a great drummer, but something dies everytime one of those guys leave...

Skiba's solo effort mediocre? Are you deaf? Matt did a great job on the split with Kevin Seconds. Those songs feel right in place with all the other songs released since Alk3's last album.
I noticed a bias against Matt throughout your review. What gives? I wasn't sorry to see Mike leave, he was the drummer for god's sake. The drummers always leave. It wasn't like he was an original member. Derek Grant should be fucking amazing as his replacement.
All that said, I would still very much like to check out Dan/Mike's album. Alkaline Rule!!!

look, you say "one of chicago's best bands, tuesday." - the usage of the word best connotates your opinion, therefore it is easily discarded (especially because tuesday were boring - live and on cd). to say "two of chicago's most well known musicians" means that there is some criteria - ie FAME. just because everyone on this board knows who blake schwarzenbach is does not mean you can call him "one of america's most well-known songwriters". follow me?
