Published on November 1st 2002 This CD is exhausting! At first, I was impressed by the complicated rhythms and constant meter changes. I noticed their resemblance to Braid (especially the older stuff) and Mock Orange (who they now share a label with), which I had nothing against. Then, I got tired. The songs on this CD are all action-packed, complicated, and ever-changing. I own no Dillinger Escape Plan CDs, but have heard them on a few occasions and this CD is similar to them in that respect if I recall. But just like with Dillenger Escape Plan, I was very impressed and then very fatigued. Volume Plus Volume has only a few brief quiet or slow moments, then you are pummeled once again. By themselves, the songs are actually pretty good. But listening to the whole album can be a bit much, for they never give you a break. They could use at least one slow song, or one that lays off the meter changes just a little bit to let you relax. Rescue does have some song variety in that their bassist takes over lead vocals on a couple songs. There are good songs on this album: “Like Déjà vu Like Déjà vu,” and “Your Energy Entertains Me.” Then there is my favorite “Shoes and Chairs” which contains the tongue twister “shoot that suit sure suits you well too/ it’s true that I salute you admiring some things,” which is said quite quickly, reminding me of The Dismemberment Plan (a plus).
If you dig busy music full of drum fills and meter changes, you will dig this. Perhaps you may first need to listen to it in pieces to warm up a bit, for listening to this entire album (let alone being one of these guys performing it) is tiring!

Good review and I applaud your game of laying down the smack. yea, greg basically owned your bitch ass in that argument, i hope you feel as stupid as you appear to everyone who reads your feeble attempt to trash his review (which was quality by the way, and makes me want to listen to the cd) this review is good. HAHA! Yeah Greg! Way to shut up the nay-sayers who constantly rag on everyone's reviews while offering no real opinions of their own. Oh and as a fellow music ed. trombone player I ask the question: Why do non-classicaly trained, music fans always jump all over music students/graduates when they comment on "popular music?" It is as if in some people's eyes knowledge and experience with "art music" not only makes us no more qualified to express an opinion on "popular music" than the average fan, it actually makes us LESS qualified! All the "cool" people out there who think that music students are all pimple-faced nerds with pasty skin and a Mozart obsession can just go back to the high school caffeteria and wax nostalgic with the other cool 14-year-olds and their sweet New Found Glory T's. greg from blue bottle eh? haha! this is chad from the band fallen star, long time no see. Your comments have nothing to do with the cd. Secondly, unless you have something to say about the cd, besides bashing the person who wrote it, I suggest that you move on. Thirdly, why are you saying that the reviewer did a bad job when you yourself gave the album an even lower score than the reviewer did? Obviously, you share some of the same thoughts as him. Lastly, musicians (of all kinds, not just students in music theory) DO refer to a piece of music as "multi-metered" so I suggest that unless you know what YOU are talking about, you should not criticize other people who actually are using the correct terms. To the guy below me, at least I admitted I wasnt their biggest fan... I like this band because they are one of the few bands to ever come to my hometown, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada Um yeah, if you read carefully, I compared them to dillenger in the fact they both constantly change meters in their songs, and in that aspect only... -Greg this band is 100 times better than dillinger. there new singer is fucking annoying. sounds like he would be great in a band formed from a the guy from creeds ass. Nope, this sounds nothing like Dillinger Escape Plan. When you're reviewing a CD, don't compare the band another band you're not familar with. |
