Hi, I'm emo.

I think that is really what this CD should titled.... but the "band" name (which is only really one person... hmmm... that's not too similar to Dashboard Confessional) isn't too far off: Lyndsay Diaries. It might have been named "Emo Diaries" if that wasn't already taken.

The one good thing that I can say about this cd is that is has really good artwork in the booklet. Yeah, I know that is not really the cd, but that's the best thing I can think of about the cd right now. If the cd was anything like the booklet, it would be in good company.

Frankly, I found this whole cd annoying. I found it more like a nondescript rip-off of Dashboard Confessional, more or less. But the vocals were a lot more annoying. And the lyrics were so "emo" that I often found myself laughing along to the songs instead of identifying with his "heartache" and "angst." Track three, "Mixtapes and Memories," starts off with the line "I promise this won't be another song about being alone, but all I feel is regret and I can't pick up the telephone." Of course, the song IS about being alone, about missing girls, etc. Song two actually has a chorus about wearing thrift store clothes...so it all adds up in the end... aching love, inability to call girls on the phone, wearing thrift store clothes, yes, this is the second coming of the emo prodigy.

Ok, so I think I have bashed this enough right now. It's not so much that the Lyndsay Diaries contains no talent; it's just that these songs don't seem very orginal to me, and they all seem kind of similar. I think that there really could be some talent here, but it just needs to be used in some other way, something more original and exciting. The songs themselves aren't terrible, they just aren't anything I would go out of my way to hear, or anything that would stand out among all of the other bands just like this.

    My Score:

i think a black gay guy should start a political hardcore band and call it Black Fag. that would be cool.

    My Score:

Yeah, but name doens't always make them tough. I mean Black Flag lived up to it's name and ten times more than it as well, but Motley Crue and Guns n' Roses are just flat out hair metal sissies. Slayer, Black Flag, Samhain, the Damned all live up to their ominous and menacing names perfectly. But bands like Venom and Poison only leave me feeling like it was corny and staged, more focused on the stage props than the performance. I saw Black Flag blow Venom into extinction at one of the rare shows where Black Flag played with them. It was hilarious, Rollins was prancing around in between songs in his black shorts yelling "Hail Satan!", they made Venom look like what they were.....cardboard cutouts. Anyway, I know this comment is completely irrelevent, but it just goes to show you that sometimes bands mean what they say and others don't.

    My Score:

Worst band name...ever. What happened to all the bands having tough names like "Black Flag", "Guns n Roses", "Slayer" or even "Motley Crue"? This wimpy band name nonsense has to stop.

This conversation is getting stupid. Please try to think about what you are saying before you comment on this board.

To clarify: I am not saying that I am against songs about being alone or about girls, because that would be stupid. I am saying that these songs suck because they are cliche songs about girls and loneliness, etc., which have gotten annoying because there are too many of them (and too many of them poorly created I might add). If these were GOOD songs about girls, then there would be no problem. I don't have anything against GOOD songs about girls, lonelineness, etc.

hell yes i just saw onelinedrawing tonite with thursday and he was fantastic. that guy has a great voice life, and his songs had some character. they weren't all one-dimensional crap like so many out there.

the ten is for onelinedrawing btw, not lyndsay diaries.

"if you take an honest look at your punk collection, then you'll find out that maybe 80% of all the songs are about girls, relationships gone sour"

what the fuck kind of "punk" bands do you listen to?

i really hate this band and all lame emo such as this. but, i have to say that any band that so desperately attempts to be deep and artistic and falls so short that it just sounds comical and elicits a laugh from me, deserves a least 2 stars for the comic relief.

"the tops of trees are on fire". oooo, you're sooo emo. fuck this cheesy band.

You all can go to hell, if you want good acoustic music, buy Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds' LIVE AT LUTHER COLLEGE.

    AMENDED VERSION:

"in your review you complain that there is a song on this album about being alone and how sick you are of that kinda stuff...question for you: is that only in emo music? Cuz if you take an honest look at your punk collection, then you'll find out that maybe 80% of all the songs are about girls, relationships gone sour and - as a result of the above - about being alone.

Next time, don't just bitch about something in order to just bitch about it!"

this person deserves to be dragged out into the street and shot. you know they're punk collection includes gc, tguk, mest, and simple plan. oh, and that studded belt you got at hot topic.

    emo blows.

cara, i commend your efforts but...give it up. they're hopeless.

Ok, yes, I think we have established that there have been a LOT of acoustic acts that have come before Dashboard and Lyndsay Diaries... obviously, acoustic guitars were around before electric guitars, so, yes, rocket-scientists, there have been a lot of acoustic acts that came before Dashboard or anything else from the nineties, for that matter. Acoustic guitar acts are not some new "novel" idea, I think that is established. Doy.

....are acoustic emo bands ever happy though? I have never heard Dashboard or any other "acoustic emo" bands ever sing a single happy song ever

    To crazyjeb--

Yes, I do realize that there are a lot of other great acoustic acts out there, besides Dashboard Confessional; in fact, I am a big fan of solo projects and acoustic acts, which is why I was given this cd to review. The fact is, however, that this cd is not original and the only reason that I compared it to Dashboard is because it sounds like a rip-off of him, but not done as well. If the cd was original and any decent, then I wouldn't have to compare it to Dashboard because it would speak for itself.

Sure it does have that look at me, another acoustic project feel about it. The lyrics suck, Scott's voice sucks, the songs suck, um what else. They don't work out too well live. People boo him off the stage. It's just college radio crap.

Dashboard this, Dashboard that. Heaven forbid an acoustic project try to make it in this world without being compared to the ever-godlike stylings of Chris Carraba. People were playing acoustics long before he ever came about. Scott puts out a solid CD...the songs aren't all catchy gems for 12 year olds to swallow up and tell all their friends about but that's simply his song writing style as reflected in his first CD. It's more original, it's a new sound, and it doesn't have "Look at me look at me, I'm like every other acoustic project in the world" written all over it.
