I did not want to go to this show, but not because I hated the bands. The weather was horrible. It was very cold and raining so bad, that I could hardly see more than 15 feet in front of my car. I slid off the road a few times, so I almost didn't make it at all. But hey it's Thrice and Hot Water.

I did not want to go to this show, but not because I hated the bands. The weather was horrible. It was very cold and raining so bad, that I could hardly see more than 15 feet in front of my car. I slid off the road a few times, so I almost didn't make it at all. But hey it's Thrice and Hot Water Music, so I took one for the team. So glad I did.

I have never heard anything good or bad about Coheed & Cambria. I had no idea what kind of music they were, or what to expect. I only half paid attention but I thought they were pretty damn good. The lead singer's voice sounded like a man-chick but hey, they can call that their signature sound. Their music was a little more intense than I am used to, but I was impressed to say the least and I would definitely go see them again.

Even though I've seen Hot Water Music more times than most of our local bands due to their constant touring, I was actually pretty hyped about seeing them. I expected there so be a sizeable amount of Hot Water Music fans, but there just weren't a lot. They were here and there, but Thrice's fans sort of took the place over. I stopped paying close attention to HWM a few shows ago, but I got re-hooked this time. I'm sure a lot of it had to do with the size of the venue. The walls contained the sound much better and the raspy vocals were much more powerful. It sounded awesome. I love the unique sound of the lead singers voice, it's truly one of their best traits that set them aside from everyone else. They played "A Flight and a Crash" among others in a seemingly short set. If you haven't seen these guys live yet, get on it!

Next up: Thrice. They has never rocked so hard in all the times I've seen them. Every time is a step above the last. These guys have captured the hearts of kids in southern California and are slowly stretching their fan-base out across the nation. I don't know when these guys are going to finally out do themselves. Their performance was outstanding. The energy from both the band and the crowd was out of control. The amount of singing along was unbelievable and there were so many fists in the air. I've never seen a crowd so intense. There was one huge pit that kept bystanders on their toes.

Midway through the set they played "Pheonix Ignition" which is one of the 2 songs I wanted to hear. I needed no more because that is my ultimate Thrice favorite. I was stunned to hear the song because I just didn't think it was a song they would play. I guess I thought wrong. They played a mix of both albums and played for a reasonable amount of time. After the band played their last song and exited the stage, the crowd chanted "One More Song", "Thrice" and "T&C". So of course they came back for one last song to please the fans.

I'm amazed at how far Thrice has come in the past year and a half. Not too long ago they were at the bottom of the bill at average shows, but fast as word of mouth and touring can spread the word, these guys have moved themselves up to headlining their own sold out shows. I'll be damned if they don't make it big in the next 2 years or so.

How do you know its a Social D reference? I could be a big oi! fan with a terminal disease, or possibly a big fan of Trainspotting?

sickboi is currently the only one on this thread that doesn't have his head up his ass.

and i don't see what's "not to get" about HWM. i think it's some of the most powerful, inspiring music being made these days.

Anonymous (November 23, 2002)

i have seen some stupid social d fans, but you, sickboi, take the cake. i might have been forced to hurl obscenities at you if i didn't know that you listened to at least 1 good band.

Anonymous (November 22, 2002)

Maybe those of us who aren't 13 are not as "punkcore" as you.

Not saying I hate HWM, but I have yet to hear what has gotten everyone so giddy over them. I Do like Thrice, but stupid fucks on this site have these preconceived thoughts that everyone that likes certain bands is some 13 year old dick who doesn't know what good music is. Well if that's your way of thinking, then that 13 year old is better suited to be talking on this site then you are, fucking morons.

Anonymous (November 22, 2002)

In actually enjoy Thrice, even reviewed their last album here. I just think Wuss tries to act a little too "grown up". You're in a high school pal, enjoy it, because the world is gonna kick your ass when you get out in it.

-sickboi

Anonymous (November 22, 2002)

so...does that mean everyone on this site is going to hate thrice now because wussemo likes them?

waste_elite (November 22, 2002)

wuss, i gotta say your taste in music really fucking sucks, but i'm impressed with your tenacity. i don't know whether to shake your hand or slap you in the face.

i need another drink

to the guy below...

I never stated that I had never heard HWM before. I admit I do not know much about them, but I did listen very closely and gave them a chance in my book.

I never once said anything like Thrice are so good HWM can't be as good, I gave them a chance and yes they weren't as good in my opinion.

Lastly, Thrice do have soe amazing guitar riffs (check out the song "to what end") and have great stage presence (every time I have seen them), but I nor anyone else do not cae if you do not like them. It means shit to me and the band, they could care less if you don't like them. I'm sure HWM are the same about me.

Just beccause I like pop punk and other "shit" like that does not make me a fag, loser, emokid, trendy, poseur, or anything else you people tend to call me. Please, grow up.

this emowuss kid is a fucking tool.

somebody confiscate his computer so he can't write any more shitty reviews.

his wretched taste in music is casting a dark storm cloud over this site. make it stop, please.

when i went to the HWM/Thrice show in toronto, there were a couple of kids behind me talking about how great Thrice was and how they had never heard HWM before but they werent even going to stay and check them out because they couldn't POSSIBLY be as good as thrice. i wanted to punch those kids in the head. i want to punch this emo kid in the head as well.

for future reference: wanky guitar solos and middle-of-the-road songwriting do not make a good band. i couldn't count how many 16 year old guitar geeks were cumming all over the place when they saw the dude from thrice's effects pedals....like whooooaa!! that's too crazy!

who needs soul when you have good equipment?

Anonymous (November 21, 2002)

Thrice is just the next step up kids are taking in the punk-intensity-heirarchy. The next step up will be to something like Killswitch Engage then to something like In Flames.

WussEmoRock (November 21, 2002)

By me saying NFG have dediated fans like HWM do makes me a conservative person and leads you to believe I follow every little order my parents give me is quite a wonderful thing for you to figure out. You really managed to read between the lines on my posts here buddy.

Now for the last time, me not liking HWM does not make me ignorant, it makes it my opinion. Not knowing the names or owning albums of HWM does not make me ignorant, it is my decision not to shell out money for it. People, learn what an opinion is, and try to understand if we all had the same beliefs, we would never get anywhere in life and their would never be any change whatsoever. stop living underneath a rock and try to realize that people tend to disagree, so just shut up and deal with it

*****Wuss-Emo-Rock*****

Anonymous (November 21, 2002)

Ok Wuss. Why don't you tell us WHY you think you're so smart....everything you seem to say is bullshit. The only reason people hurl abuse is because you are too stupid to describe, therefore they feel angry and hurl abuse. What do you expect? An ignorant person like you deserves it. You're just some idiot who listens to his parents and doesn't think for himself. If you did and you knew the REAL shit that goes down in the world you wouldn't be such a conservative bitch.

Sickboi-

Fuck you are starting to piss me off. Stop trying to be the cool kid on the block. For once listen to what I am saying instead of coming back with a trendy smart ass comment about NFG.

My point was every band is respected by their fans, and just because you hate NFG and love HWM does not make it true that HWM are a better band and everything else you believe.

*****Wuss-Emo-Rock*****

Anonymous (November 21, 2002)

Don't you ever compare NFG to HWM.

-sickboi

Anonymous (November 21, 2002)

JUst because HWM has a ton of fans and are well respected does not mean that I nor anyone else HAS to bow down to them and give them the utmost respect. What about all of those smaller bands that everyone bashes on and makes fun of, or hell even New Found Glory, they are well respected by their fans and work very hard at what they do. You're thinking is screwed up by your love for HWM.

Anonymous (November 21, 2002)

How about if you don't like a band, yet they are very talented and well respected, you leave it at "I don't like them". When you try to rip on a band like HWM, with legions of devoted fans, and music that is 30x more talented and inspiring than those turd-burgularing assclowns Reel Big Fish.

I think Damien from AFR said it best...."Fuck with the bull, you get the horns."

WussEmoRock (November 21, 2002)

you have no idea what kind of music I listen to. Sure, you know of some bands I like and probably can figure out others from the ones I've mentioned or reviewed, but come on buddy...you don't know everything about me. for instance, my favorite band is The Beach Boys, fucking wonderful music.

now onto my HWM comment, of course I try to make it witty, it is my review. I mean, what sounds better, "I think HWM sucks," or the comment I said. I know either one you don't agree with but think about it for a second, and maybe you will agree with me.

*****Wuss-Emo-Rock*****

Anonymous (November 21, 2002)

Here's why I see you as ignorant Wuss, instead of saying you just don't care for a band, you always try to be witty and make some dumbass remark. i didn't mind you until your review on HWM.

"This 4 piece band from Gainesville, Florida managed to co-headline this show and play one song over and over for 45 minutes."

That is ignorance, not an opinion. Your name should be "WUSSSHITROCK" because thats about all you listen to.

Better than Nathan Gray. Are you on fucking crack?! Holy shit, this jus proves your stupidity..

Anonymous (November 20, 2002)

"wow, i don't like thrice but i like hot water music. i guess i am just some asshole scenester for not liking your music."

its not MY music. its not YOUR music. and its totally fine to have opinions and dislike. i was talking about basing an opinion on a band, and even more so a group of people, on what they wear or 'who' you think they are rather than the merit of the music itself.

Anonymous (November 20, 2002)

my band is better than your band.

WussEmoRock (November 20, 2002)

to the guy below me, we would never give you this "bandwagon shit" when you just stated how much Dustin sucks at everything.

But, let's really think about that. You must not really have ever heard Thrice before, Dustin sings/screams so much better than Boy Sets Fire or any other band out there.

*****Wuss-Emo-Rock*****

Anonymous (November 20, 2002)

"And to the guy who said Dustin from Thrice's voice is boring...you're kidding right? Why? Because he can actually SING and scream better than almost everyone else in hardcore? Yes, there are better screamers, and yes there may be better singers, but there is no one that does them together as well as him. He has a grasp on something thats very important in music - melody. He also writes some of the best lyrics out there."

You are an idiot. Go listen to Boy Sets Fire. Nathan Gray shits all over Dustin. He sings better, screams better, and has more melody. Oh yeah, and he writes better lyrics also.

THRICE = OVERRATED.

And for the record, I never liked them, so don't give me this "bandwagon" shit.

Reading the responses to the reviews to these shows has only proven to me one thing:

The underground/punk/hardcore/etc scene is no better than any other group of people: jocks, preppy; or heck, even politicians. You have such a pathetic group of codes of conduct its truly sad that you don't see how contradictory it is to what you THINK it is.

ITS FUCKING MUSIC. IF ITS GOOD, WHO CARES WHO ELSE LISTENS TO IT? You seem to.

There is no punk scene.
There is no hardcore scene.
There is no emo scene.
There is your idiot scene and there is a good music scene. I'd like say I belong to the second.

Think for yourselves and outside your apathetic little boxes for two seconds. And no, "thinking for yourself" doesn't mean liking something for aesthetic reasons or because the kid at school who wears the wrong labeled tshirt doesn't.

Hot Water Music is a really good band.
Coheed and Cambria is a really good band.
Thrice is a really good band.

Settled.

Anonymous (November 20, 2002)

"Thrice was bad the first time they were around when they were called Cave In pre-space-rock-era. Cave In put that out when they were 16 too. Pathetic."

Wow, there's someone who has never heard Thrice. They sound NOTHING like "Until Your Heart Stops" or "Beyond Hypothermia". NOTHING.

And to the guy who said Dustin from Thrice's voice is boring...you're kidding right? Why? Because he can actually SING and scream better than almost everyone else in hardcore? Yes, there are better screamers, and yes there may be better singers, but there is no one that does them together as well as him. He has a grasp on something thats very important in music - melody. He also writes some of the best lyrics out there.

HOOOOOORRRRRAAAAAYYYYYY for scenesters!!! You guys RULE! Yeah, Thrice totally sucks because someone at their show was wearing a Hurley shirt. That makes them suck.

Its so hard to be 18 these days, isnt it?

much how I'd say a year and a half ago everyone thought Thursday was the shit, I went months without hearing anyone say they didnt like them.

No, everyone loves to talk shit about them. One of the worst thing about this whole scene in general is how we all turn are back on someone has achieves heightened popularity relativly fast.

Anonymous (November 19, 2002)

that's what i was thinking...they're getting too big for the scenesters to like anymore. no, i'm not talking about you kids that never liked them, so don't respond with that. i'm talking about those who used to like them until very recently for undisclosed reasons.

Thrice has had plenty of west-coast fans for some time.

I saw them play in Vancouver. Maybe the bands decide themselves based on who actually wants to headline, while keeping in mind what combo will produce a better show. I might not want to headline after 5 nights in a row!

"Sickboi, did you not read the review? Thrice headlined, not HWM"

he said he was glad HWM headlined here (by here he means the east coast). i have to agree with him, i don't see what is so special about thrice at all. HWM, on the other hand, has continually impressed me both on record and live. they deserve to be headlining every date.

to answer your question on the bottom, no they didnt play either.

It was lame though, during HWM there was me and about 10-15 other guys all into it up front and then just a bunch of Thrice kids using it as an excuse to mosh aimlessly. I hate all ages clubs.

Those are the two songs I wish they played in LA. and it sounds to me they had the same set list/order of songs at your show as they did at ours, at least the last 2
