Despite many people’s reactions to Guttermouth, I absolutely love them. They put on a good show, and have this rhythm to their music that just gets me going. Past that, I have no idea why, but they’re one of my favorite bands. When I heard they were playing on a Thursday night here in Houston, at the legendary Fitzgerald’s, I nearly shit myself. I then learned who was supporting them - Nerf Herder and Authority Zero, and I did. Well, not really, but I was excited. I immediately asked for the day off, saying that I had a dentists’ appointment, got some money, and found a ride.

The day of the concert came along, and I found out just how good the concert was to be. You see, for me, when it’s going to be a good concert, I have a bad day, and when it’s gonna be a bad concert I have a REALLY good day. Well, Thursday sucked ass. I was in a good mood, because I was going to go see a show, that is, until I busted my ass. HARDCORE. In front of around 200 people at my school. Embarrassing to say the least, plus I think I dislocated my shoulder. I then proceeded to walk it off and go get some lunch; come to find out, my wallet was gone. $23,my driver’s license, SSC, pictures ,Blockbuster card, GONE. I then got 2 hours of d-hall for being 16 minutes late to class. I figured this had better be a good show. It was.

We found the club with little effort, and got in what I thought was going to be a long line, but it only took 4 minutes to get to the door. We paid the 12 bucks to get in, and then went upstairs where Guttermouth, Nerf Herder, Authority Zero, and 1208 were to play. We also checked out the downstairs schedule just to be sure where we wanted to be when. Since me and my friend had either not heard of, or didn’t want to see any of the downstairs bands, we decided to stay upstairs for the remainder of the show. For those of you who care, the downstairs bands were Bemus, Anyone, and 8 Stops 7 - anyone remember them ?(Question Everything)

Anyways, I headed upstairs to peruse the merchandise, and found to my dismay that Authority Zero had nothing but girls’ shirts, Cds ,and stickers. They had played a hometown date in Phoenix earlier in the week, and were going to get more merch the next day. No biggie, I just hung out with the drummer for a while, and learned that they had been around for about 8 years, and are planning a tour with Homegrown for January, I can’t wait. I then bought, or was given, some stickers, buttons, shirts, a CD, and some posters from the various bands there. I then found a good spot to check out 1208,the opening band, from. I had, up until then, expected nothing from them, as their songs didn’t really interest me. Boy was I amazed. They absolutely blew me away, getting the, as of then, small crowd into their set. I couldn’t tell you any songs they played but “Lies That Lie”, but they put on a killer live show, go see them if they come to your area. Next up was Authority Zero, blending ska, reggae, punk, rap, and straight up rock, they are easily becoming one of my favorite bands EVER. They opened their energetic set with some song I don’t know, then flew into “Passing the Time”.They then got the drummer of 1208 to come out and call the crowd a bunch of pussies, because the pit consisted of primarily one guy who, according to the singer of Guttermouth,“Ought to be at the Misfits show” (The Misfits were playing at another club that night) They then played almost every track off of the CD A Passage In Time including “Sky’s the Limit”,”One More Minute”,and “Superbitch”. When they got off stage,I went over to their “booth”(a trunk with their merch)and got the lead singer and guitarist to sign my backpack(which I carry everywhere). The lead singer drew the AZ logo on it,I think that’s pretty cool, just thought you people should know.I then went to the front of the stage to await Nerf Herder. At the time,I wasn’t big on them, but my friend Andrew has some of their Cds,and thought of them as pretty cool;after this show,so do I.They put on a killer show playing songs like “Sorry” and “High School”.They had great crowd interaction too, going so far as to have some HUGE fan of theirs come up and sing, even though he was terrible.

After their set,I looked around and realized that Fitzgerald’s was now near capacity with near 600 people there, and this made me very excited,as there was a string of shows earlier this year in which there were less and less people there as it got later.Weird.Anyways…I noticed that there were some ex-crowd members on the stage now,and I found this interesting,so I went to the stage door, and attempted to go onto the side of the stage, fully expecting some random roadie to come tell me to leave, but none did.It finally dawned on me that no one cared where I was, just long as I didn’t fuck up the band,so I stayed. I ended up watching the show surrounded by the drummer for Authority Zero, the guitarist for Nerf Herder, the roadie for Guttermouth, and the drummer for 1208,can’t get much cooler than that.

As the members of Guttermouth took the stage one by one, starting with the new bassist I noticed the set list taped to the wall on my right,so I looked it over to get an idea of what they were going to play, and was barely disappointed.Except for “I’m Punk”,”My Girlfriend”,and “I’m Destroying the World” most of my favorites were there. They played “BBQ” to start off with, then went into “Secure Horizons”, “Lipstick”, ”Can I Borrow Some Ambition”, “She’s Got the Look”, and “Scholarship in Punk” among others. They didn’t stick to the set list though, they ended up playing crowd suggestions, so long as the bassist knew the song. (the roadie-Dusty(?)told me that the bassist didn’t know “My Girlfriend” and “I’m Destroying the World”) As usual their singer was plastered, and he put on a good show, funny huh ? He was making fun of the crowd, as usual, and went so far as to tell one chick that “It’s bitches like you who are the reason I’m single, have no kids, and am gonna stay that way”

All in all this was a good show. What am saying ?!?! All in all this was one of the best shows I’ve seen ever !! I recommend that everyone go see this if it comes to your town, and hang out with the guys from Authority Zero, they’re cool as hell.

Dude, you got some problems. You can't even support your own town's bands, what the fuck ? I could understand if the band sucked, but Next to Nothing is pretty good, despite what you might think. And yes,I was one of the "stupid crapfaces" that made you sit outside, dumb fuck.Did you actually think that Hot Water Music and Thrice playing together wouldn't sell out Mary Jane's ? Moron.I'm still allowed to listen to Recover,Thrice, and whoever else I want to listen to. Also, flyering for shows is different than flyering for bands,I've flyered for SHOWS for LTJ and Bad Religion(seperate shows, not when they played together)Also,I don't just flyer for "bad pop punk bands," you just seem to have some elitest complex.Ah-well,someday they'll have medicine for the dreaded "Elitest-asshole disease"

Oh, yeah one more thing concerning Thrice and Recover: You are not allowed to listen to anymore. If you were one of the stupid crapfaces that made me and my friends sit outside of Mary Jane's until after Thrice played because it was techniaclly sold out and then you left before Hot Water Music, you will...you will.......you will have a bad tomorrow.

    Anonymous (November 28, 2002)

    I am the shit talker.

So, you flyer for shitty bands. You didn't have to list them all, you could have simply daid bad pop punk bands.

Man, while I am ranting Next to Nothing should breakup. 2-3 years ago they may have had a shot at going somewhere but the fact that they still think the are good shows total ignorance. Scott seems to know there good days are behind them but Charlie, man as much as I like that guy, he is totally clueless to the fact that his band is now total generic poop punk (poop is not a typo, I just made that, up I'll be at the Laff Stop all week).

Why the heck would you flyer for Bad Religon and LTJ did you think nobody has heard of them before.

    THAT_GUY (November 28, 2002)

I listen to both the Weakerthans and Propaghandi, just so you know.I wasn't near the guy,so I'll take your word that he wasn't really singing, but he did sing the song when he was onstage.I wanted to fucking throw a bottle at that stupid bitch who sat on the stage.I just recently(compared to other people) got into punk music,so I haven't gotten a chance to see many of the bands that you have probably seen, and many of the bands that I listed, but hopefully I'll get to see Propaghandi and make my own decision. And last but not least,I have either a)gotten flyers from bands,b)gotten flyers from the venue,or c)printed my own flyers to promote concerts for Mest,The Ataris, the Misfits,The Casualties,Second Class,The Trademark,Captives in a Cardboard Box,Less Than Jake,Bad Religion,Caught in the Act,the battle of the bands at the Engine Room 11/10,Never Heard of It,Leisure Class Heros,Next to Nothing,Hatebreed,Flying Tigers,No Use For a Name,Recover,Tsunami Bomb,Thrice, and countless others. If I like a show,I'll get flyers somehow and hand them out,it's my way of getting people into punk.(although, for a few of the shows I did it as a favor,or just cause I was bored)

I am the main shit talker of this conversation just so you know who this is.

No Fat's roster is very unimpressive. I got through my Fat stage about 5 years ago when all of those bands toured constantly not just once every now and then. They are all has beens now, come on does anyone actually think the Mad Caddies and Snuff are still good.

Propahgandi is horrible I saw them 2 years ago when Hot Water Music played downstairs at Fitz and I left after about 30 minutes when I realized they had not beeen playing the same song over and over again(that was a sarcastic way of saying that all of their songs sounded the same). Do yourself a favor and go by a Weakerthans album and stop listening to Propaghandi.

I will admit though I am looking forward to the Avail show with Hey Mercedes at MJ's. It should be crazy.

I was near the moron that got on stage he was with his slutty looking girlfriend who kept sitting on the stage. He kept acting like he knew the workd but he was acting because he would keep moving his mouth when they weren't singing.

What shows do you flyer for? Give me some examples.

    Anonymous (November 27, 2002)

this tour was nothing special. that's not guttermouth's new bassist, clint in the original bass player, moron.

    THAT_GUY (November 27, 2002)

I've never listened to Sick Of It All all that much, and that other person mentioned the Lawrence Arms.

    evildeadalive (November 27, 2002)

Yeah I gotta agree, I'm punker than any of you fuckers (sarcasm), and I can admit Fat's looking better than ever.

    waste_elite (November 27, 2002)

forgot lawrence arms and sick of it all.

fat's roster is starting to look pretty damn impressive.

    THAT_GUY (November 27, 2002)

The guy may have been a moron, but he knew the chorus,he knew every damn song they sang. And Authority Zero is quite original, you just haven't given them a chance.

    Other good bands on Fat:

    No Use For a Name
    Dillenger 4
    Avail
    NOFX(sometimes good)
    Good Riddance
    Hi-Standard
    Lagwagon
    Screeching Weasel
    Propaghandi
    Snuff
    Strung Out
    Swingin Utters

WHAT BITCH ?!? You can't not like those bands.

One more thing, since when did I "admit" that I shopped at Hot Topic? I used to go in there with my now ex-girlfriend,cause she liked to shop there(don't ask me why),but now I just go in there to pass out flyers for shows and laugh at people who take themselves seriously while shopping at Goth And Go.

    Anonymous (November 26, 2002)

My review: Nerf Herder rocked, everyone else played horrible generic music that was interesting and original 5 years ago, I know Guttermouth has been around for a while but the 2 other bands need to break up because their band lacks the one quality that all bands need originality.
All bands on Fat are horrible except the Lawrence Arms and LTJ. Yes I am well aware of Nerf Herders association with Fat and I wish they would move to a better label, one with more than a bunch of bands that all sound like Fat Mikes version of what punk should sound like.
I am not more punk than you because I don't shop at Hot Topic (You do admit it) and I don't listen to shitty bands with generic drum beats, lyrics and guitar lines that call themselves punk bands.
Oh yeah, according to Parry "I hate it when morons get on stage with us and can't even remember the chorus to the song."

    Anonymous (November 26, 2002)

hell yeah if anyone could pack fitzgeralds LTJ would be one of them, i got offered to go to this show for free but i turned it down.....not a fan of any of these bands

    THAT_GUY (November 26, 2002)

I'm sorry I'm not "punk" enough for you,and I haven't been to as many Houston shows as you,and blah, blah, fucking blah.If you're so good, where's your review ? Asshole. Even though they didn't want him up there initially, they did eventually ask him to sing,I remember very clearly. Also, how does my liking Authority Zero and 1208 (who are on Lava and Epitaph) show that I "think Fat has the best bands in the world on their label therefore, you must be deaf" ? Also,Nerf Herder, the band you excluded,is on Honest Don's,which has, for at least the past 2 years, released the "Floyd" sampler with Fat.So PFFTT !!

    Anonymous (November 26, 2002)

That was possibly the worst review I have ever read. I was at that show and let me tell you other than Nerf Herder everyone else sucked. If Guttermouth is one of your favorite bands you must have the iq of a retarded chimp. The fact that you actually liked the other bands (other than Nerf Herder) shows that you probaly think Fat has the best bands in the world on their label therefore, you must be deaf. The huge fan of nerf herder was some drunk moron and had no clue what he was doing on stage and Nerf Herder did not even want him up there.
Second, if you considered that a packed show at Fitz. you are insane. Have you ever been there before? That place was only about half full that night. If you could jump in a time machine to 5 years ago and go to one of the LTJ shows there you would see a packed fitzgerald's.
Thanks for reading my criticism and I hope it convinces you to never write a review of a show in Houston ever again.

High School is on NH's "My EP" on My Records, which is owned by Joey Cape of Lagwagon. It came out last year.

    Anonymous (November 26, 2002)

Guttermouth is a second rate Vandals, who are a second rate NOFX.

    Anonymous (November 26, 2002)

    i second the yuck.

    waste_elite (November 26, 2002)

    yuck

    WussEmoRock (November 26, 2002)

Since when does Nerf Herder have a song called "High School?" Maybe they do, but not to my knewledge.

Good review though, I love guttermouth and Nerf.

    *****Wuss-Emo-Rock*****

    Dubar (November 26, 2002)

I expected nothing frm authority zero, as they're like the "radio rock" band of the show, but they did not disappoint. They were fast as fuck and blew me away.

But guttermouth of course dominated the evening. Mark is just a bouncy ball of energy
