Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

What I was going to do before I started this review was bitch about how this was a sit down show (don't say then why did you go? I went because on Goldenvoice it said the show was beind held at The El Rey Theatre, but after I bought the tickets without looking on Ticketmaster at the venue, I realized it was at the Wiltern Theatre). Our seats were second to last row, but the only positive thing about this was the place is pretty small (max capacity around 2500) so even from the top you could see everything, although I was going nuts not being able to move. If this show was about 7 years ago, I would have loved it, put it that way.

Enough of the bickering, let's move onto the shitty show...

Taking Back Sunday was the reason I went to this show, and I just managed to get inside when their first song started up "You Know How I do." They then went qucikly into playing the next two songs on the album in a row, which are "Bike Scene" and "Cute Without the E." These two are my favorite songs by them, and it was driving me insane not being able to move. No one around me had a clue who these guys were, in fact they all thought The Used were the only band opening. So, for all of you, especially the ones that thought they were too cool (and dumb) to even listen or watch, TBS is a pop punk band with screaming background vocals, and great melodies. They had a lot of stage presence, and Adam's hip (I heard at Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday he was using a cane or sitting down) seemed fine because he was jumping all around. They were really good, but definitely not worth the $70 (2 tickets). Oh, and get this shit, THEY ONLY PLAYED FOR 15 MINS! I already wanted to leave, but my girlfriend likes The Used.

After a quick set up The Used came out to tons of girls screaming. The only two songs I know by them are indeed "Box Full of Sharp Objects" and "Taste of Ink," and both of those are pretty catchy songs and sounded good live. But, everything else by them is just bad, way too much screaming for a band that just can't seem to pull it off. I will give them credit for being a pretty fun band to watch live, they had a lot of energy, and surprisingly talked well in between songs (yes I like when bands talk between songs...just not a lot). They played for about 25 mins, and then were gone.

By this time we were debating whether or not to leave the show. I have seen H20 and they bored me the last time I saw them (Mest tour). I had no intentions to see BCR, just to get that out in the air. My gut told me yes, but my wallet told me no, two bands weren't enough for $70. So, after a 30 minute wait H20 came on the stage.

H20 came out after Kat from 106.7 KROQ announced them and BCR. I hate how KROQ always does it for the last two bands and never even cares about the openers. Anyway, H20 surprised me, in the beginning. They played great, had a lot of energy even though Toby again was getting angry at the crowd because no one was into them. They played some of my favorite songs, "One Life, One Chance" and a few others. But, when they played any of the new songs, I thought I was going to die. I even managed to fall to sleep in my chair during H20's set, because after the first 15 mins it just got bad. Toby didn't like the crowd (again-same thing at Mest), and the band kept playing their very poppy songs. Get this too, they played for a little over 45 mins.

Outside in these really comfortable chairs I was sleeping when this little kid came up to me and sat down. He was a mini Tom Delonge, just like everyone else out the show, and so I thought I'd strike up a conversation with him. He couldn't have been over the age of 8.
"So who are you here to see?"
"Box Car Racer!"
"Cool, how did you like the opening bands?"
"Box Car Racer already played?"
"No, H20 did, and so did the Used and..."
"I didn't like them, I want to see Box Car Racer."
"Me too kid, I'm very excited. what is your favorite song by them?"
"Probably "I feel so.""
"Awesome, I don't have a favorite song by them, but I really like Blink, what about you?"
"Yes. I was Travis for Halloween."...........then his mother came and took him away from me. That was probably the highlight of my night, talking to that little kid.

Ok, so now Box Car Racer is up.

Bad music, horrible sound, guitars were way too loud, vocals were awful, and the instrumental song they opened with was shit. After the 3rd song we left, just so we could get a feel of what the other Blink is like live.

That is the last show I am ever going to that is sit down, it really makes you appreciate all those small venues. Anyway, I know this review is really bad, but it is because I don't even know what to say besides THIS SHOW SUCKS! What a waste of money, damn.

    And what do you expect if you go to a concert with 3 terrible bands (H2O aren't amazing now either)?? And $70?? That's like selling your soul to be in some religious cult, hell I'd rather do that than see these god awful bands.

    I went to see basically this same show in Toronto (Taking Back Sunday wasn't there, but if they had've been I would've enjoyed the show alot more)
    I still wanted to see The Used and Box Car Racer - that's right, I enjoy the Blink 182-after-being-kicked-in-the-nuts sound of BCR and plan on seeing them again after their next album comes out -
    The Used started, and at the time the only song I knew by them was Box Full of Sharp Objects, they kicked ass and the very next day I picked up their album. Now that I know the names of the songs I can tell you they played Taste Of ink, Buired Myself Alive, Blue And Yellow, Say Days Ago ... That's all I remember . . .
    Up next was H20, they were pretty lame, trying to act like part of the crowd despite being old enough to be almost anyone in the crowd's fathers. So, at the risk of being lampooned by H20 fans or Blink 182/BCR haters alike, I used H20's set as time to take a breather and pick up a BCR t-shirt.
    Next was Box Car, and despite about a 25 minute or so set up time I really enjoyed their show too. Tom was a little behind singing sometimes, but the guitar sound from Tom and whats-his-name from Over my dead body was great as was the rythm section from Travis and Anthony. Travis never ceases to please.
    They played cat like thief minus Tim's part so it was basically just the chorus, which was a little disappointing, but highlights included I feel so, All systems go, a comical live rendition of my first punk song and a new song whose name I can't recall, it had the word 'love' in the title though.
    I was pleased with the night, until some weird guy came upto me and started asking me questions about the show patronizing me and my favourite bands. If my mommy hadn't come and taken me away he likely would've raped and killed me then raped me again. (this is a satire of a comment the reviewer made, it was a different child altogether that he attempted to abduct and sodomize)

    Screw Posers...

    Taking Back Sunday and H20 are two of my favorite bands, but i decided not to go to this tour when it hit NYC just because i knew it would suck having them play with Box Car Racer.

    I've saw H20 headline at Irving plaza, a nice small venue in NYC, and they Ripped it up. Amazed me how good they were. Then a few months later i saw them play the crappiest, most pop-punk set i have ever seen them play when they played with Sum 41.(I've seen them 6 times) I knew they would play a crappy set and the crowd would be horrible. So i wasn't going to waste my money.

    As for taking back sunday. Well, i've only seen them play small venues- and their crowd always amazes me. I'm driving to NJ to see them play birch hill with Starting Line. Coming back to NYC..seeing Catch 22 the next day...and then seeing TBS with Coheed and Cambria the next day...Let's just say i didn't want to ruin my image of taking back sunday...

    And Cut from the Team and Timberwolves are just like the greatest songs ever written...

    Why is WUSSEMOROCK trying to pick up young kids by starting conversations about music with them. That kid is lucky his parent came to get him, I think WUSSEMOROCK was about to pull it out of his pants & ask the kid to touch it. The thought of a little kid dressed up like Travis was giving him a chubby.

    i give it those stars for taking back sunday which i like, but boxcar racer and the used...nah. H2O has kinda lost it, they tried to appeal to the "mtv punk" crowd and didn't get over. Now they are pissed because people don't like them, maybe they should get back to playing how they used to. $70 for two tickets, fuck that. TBS always plays here for $8 or $10 except the times the lead singer is busy falling off stages and breaking bones

    what is wrong with some of you people?

    1) I am not trying to show off for my g/f by writing this review. If you have ever been to this site, you'd know I've writting plenty of reviews. Plus, it doesn't matter, my g/f knows I am a loser haha (I am only kidding we've been dating for over 3 years).

    2)I would not have spent $100 on this show, and tickets were not $15. They were about $23.50 without service charge, so get your story straight

    3) I never said a band took 30 mins to set up to play for only 15 mins. I said H20 took 30 mins to set up to play for 45 mins. do you think I am lying or something? damn.

    WussEmoRock is a fucking retard, and a band doesn't spend a half hour setting up to play for 15 mintues you dipshit, you should have taken your girlfriend to your Reel Big Fish show. and the Used is OK, and Taking Back Sunday is pretty awsome. Not for $70 dollars though.

    the used isn't all that bad, nor is taking back sunday (who's live show is quite good)... the first time i saw taking back sunday there was maybe 150 kids at the show and they played somewhere in the middle of the show, i forget who all played really... anyways, i'd rather see those bands than box car racer or h2o (i've seen both, well blink not box car, but it's like the same thing right)

    Blah blah, the Used really do suck, and while Boxcarracer may be a nice idea on paper it just bites.

    I like the Used. I dont get why people are so hostile to everybody else who likes something the others doesnt. When are people going to get this through their thick skulls, you are not the ones who decides what is good and what is not for everybody else.     apparently toby getting pissed off at crowds for not getting into them is becoming a trend. i too, wasted $20 on this show in dc and was horribly disappointed in h2o. i think i'm done with h2o. i mean, what the fuck does toby expect? he's playing to kids that are into blink 182, not exactly his type of crowd that he is so desperately trying to win over.

    waste...they bored me because of the setting for one, seating sucks, especially when your the top level, and also becuase they played mostly new material (to a poppier crowd), and played it for way too long. Not to mention Toby was seriously in a bad mood with the crowd, wondering why no one would move around for him on the floor. oh and $70 was for 2 tickets, even though that is not a good excuse.
