Who would have thought that the idea of DVDs would be embraced by so many in the punk community? A quick search on Interpunk.com shows that there are over 100 punk-related DVDs that they carry alone, with more coming out all the time. It's pretty ironic that a type of music that isn't supposed to be based around money [and ridicules people for "selling out"] thrive on the most expensive form of entertainment on the market today. But I'm not here to write an editorial about what is inherently wrong with this, I'm here to review a New Found Glory DVD.

I'd rather write the editorial.

In all honesty, this DVD isn't all that bad for what it is. Sure, I hate New Found Glory with a passion, but as a DVD it is well stocked with goodies. There are two separate documentaries about the band [one pre-MCA, one current], and after watching this I actually know the bandmembers' names. Up until now, I just though it was "The guy that looks like Quintin Tarantino, the guy who was in Shai Hulud, the fat bassist, the crazy drummer, and the other guy." So at least that is cleared up now.

The DVD also has all five of the band's music videos, which are all entertaining to a degree [especially the original version of "Hit Or Miss" with Corey Feldman]. No matter what you think about the band's sound, these guys do have a sense of humor. The newer documentary doesn't portray this too much, but the older one does an excellent job of actually showing you who these guys are [and I definitely was laughing out loud at points - especially Jordan's impromptu song about cat piss].

This DVD won't make the band any new fans, but it will definitely please the band's current horde of groupies.

Oops, I'd write more, but this just sold on Half.com, so I have to go package it up.

    My Score:

The comment below this is one of the worst comments I've ever read on this site. NOFX sucks? Ok.... lets think about this one. 1) The music sucks. Are you joking? They have some of the most impressive chord progressions out there, Melvin is good at guitar and Hefe plays really awesome solos, Fat Mike is a very good bassist and writes some awesome lines, and anyone who says that the drummer sucks has never listened to the music. It's obvious that the music doesn't suck. 2) The lyrics suck. What are good lyrics then? I mean, honestly, I've heard a LOT of punk bands. I've never heard a punk band with even one half as much lyrical diversity as NOFX. One song is funny, the next song is clever but poingniant, the next song is weird and irreverant, and full of lyrical puns. You don't get that with most bands. 3) The vocals not only suck but are overrated to the max. First of all, everyone knows that Fatty wasn't blessed with pipes of gold. Yet somehow he still manages to convey emotion and expression as well as Greg Graffin ever does. Plus, the harmonies are really, really good -- and they do them live. 4) The band sucks -- yeah I think we've taken care of that one already. And finally, the thesis: "punk is fucking dead." That's why we're on a punk website, right? It's called punknews.org, and there are obviously thousands of people who come here. Pretty impressive for a dead genre. --JP

    My Score:

I did give it a chance, I own two fucking NoFx albums. And lemme tell ya, they suck. Here's how I justify that:

    1. The lyrics suck

    2. The music sucks

    3. The vocals not only suck, but they're overrated to the max

    4. THE BAND SUCKS

The albums? "The Decline" and "Punk in Drublic". They act like they're super-original, but all they do is rip off the Buzzcocks first album and put shitty lyrics to it.

So what if "The Decline" is political? It still sucks! I mean, there are a million better political punk songs out there. And too many people think that NoFx started punk. Fuck, they started when it had been dead for 5 years. Yeah, thats right, punk is fucking dead.

...I don't get it. I can honestly say I really just don't get it. I like the old punk, I also like bands like NOFX, Bad Religion, AFI, Bane, Alkaline Trio and what you people like so much, but can't help but liking Blink 182, New Found Glory, Saves the Day, and Good Charlotte (though a few GC songs tend to grate on my nerves). So, why don't you punkers give pop punk a chance, if you like it, like it, if you don't, well, don't assume what you DO like is to be worshipped by all that have an interest in punk music, I mean, I constantly see a few select bands put up on pedistals, then knocked down by someone else. Some of you seem to think you are the authority on punk, only to be knocked down by someone else who thinks they are the authority on punk, who then gets knocked down again etc. etc. It'd be great if some 'authority on punk' could tell me why I can't like what you call 'punk' and this as well without being flamed as being a 'teenybopper' or a 'mindless pop puppet' or something ridiculous like that.

    My Score:

To clarify -- the way we all got started talking about NOFX was this: way down in the posts, someone compared A New Found Glory to "classic bands like BR and NOFX." It's been downhill since then. Now, to the guy two posts down: "The Decline" by NOFX is the biggest peice of shit I've ever heard. Maybe the thing that pisses me off most is that it seems like they just took like 5 or 6 songs and just crammed them together into one big peice of shit. listening to the decline is like listening to any other 18 minute cd, except they don't have breaks between the songs." Whaaaaaaaaaat? Dude, I assume you've listened to the song before, but I don't know if you've listened carefully. It's not like five or six songs -- it's like five or six different "sections," yeah, but they definitely fit together into a cohesive song. And also, there's a riff (the infamous "trombone riff") that gets repeated time and time again throughout the song. Additionally, all of the lyrics have the same theme and get tied up together at the end to form a kind of manifesto. First, the song opens with the rhetorical question "Where are all the stupid people from?" Then there's examples of the bad state of things -- drug laws, gun violence, etc. In the end, it's all tied together: "And so we go on with our lives/we know the truth but prefer lies." It's definitely one big unit. If you're gonna say this is really several little songs, you'd have to say the same about "Bohemian Rhapsody" or any other great song that includes different-sounding parts. I agree with your point about the term "gay," though. And to waste elite, who says "the guy below me is really stupid." What does that mean? First of all, which point out of the two that he made are you disagreeing with? And second, why do you disagree? What makes him stupid? It doesn't make sense to just make a statement like that and not back it up. There's no point. --JP

Before I begin, let me say that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so heres mine.... "The Decline" by NOFX is the biggest peice of shit I've ever heard. Maybe the thing that pisses me off most is that it seems like they just took like 5 or 6 songs and just crammed them together into one big peice of shit. The song is such a fucking gimmick. Everytime someone mentions it, they have to mention that it's 18 minutes long. Who the fuck cares? listening to the decline is like listening to any other 18 minute cd, except they don't have breaks between the songs. and how did nofx even come up under this review? i'm guessing that all you self-rightous punks were reasserting your punkness by saying that kids should listen to nofx rather than nfg. well fucking grow up! if someone wants to listen to nfg, how punk does that make you to try to control them and tell them what to listen to?
and one more comment before i go. what is the justification in using the word 'gay' in a derogatory manner? If you wanna say that nfg is shitty music, then say that. But comparing them to a sexual lifestyle makes absolutely no sense and only shows your ignorance. Please think before you speak.

THE PISTOLS WERE ORIGINAL WHEN THEY STARTED!!! Johnny Rotten and Sid openly made fun of their audiences when people started copying them.

Oh well. In twenty years Fat Mike will just be another old bozo slagging through life, while the Sex Pistols will be remembered as the first and greatest.

and uh, i can't see how they wouldn't have any lasting value, they've been around for nearly 20 years."

I know some people that like NoFx... They're all Freshmen. And there's nothing wrong with that, because I can see how "skaters" or whoever likes their lyrics. But nothing by NoFx has ever required any thought, and maybe thats why only little kids love them. And then they hear all these immitations, like Blink 182, NFG, Sum 41, etc., and think 'boy, they started all this'. So they think that NoFx must have been one of the first punk bands. In truth, NoFx started in the mid 80s, and by then punk had been dead for a couple of years... Tsk, tsk.

Maybe someday all the skate punks will put down their skateboards and start thinking and overhear a Sex Pistols song or something else original and meaningful. But by then the whole "skate fad" will be over and done with, so that's probably not gonna happen.

Waste_elite: yes, all of the socialist and anarchist writers of our time and past (Parenti, Chomsky, Levine, and even every single guy who prints an anti-capitalist zine and sells it) are capitalists, by definition. No, I don't believe that they're hypocrites, because if you read their writings carefully, you'll find that their main gripe with the capitalist system is the way that it creates personal empires at the expense of the well-being of the masses. None of the leftist writers are exploiting anyone by selling their books, nor are they building much in the way of personal empires. They play the capitalist game because it's the only game there is to play. The same goes for the bands. None of the independent bands are exploiting anyone or making a huge profit. They're not hypocrites. However, to say that they are not capitalists is just incorrect.

    and about the t-shirt thing...

yes, the concept of buying low and selling high and making a private profit and whatnot is capitalist, but that doesn't make you a capitalist. this is the society we live in and you have to play by the rules in order to survive. you've pretty much stated that, but i'm clarifying.

reasoning that making money from selling products makes you a capitalist is totally off base. by those standards, all of the great socialist and anarchist writers have all been hypotcrites because they've made money from the selling of their books.

To waste_elite: sorry dude, but selling t-shirts does make you a capitalist. I know that the guys in Anti-Flag (and most other bands out there) aren't interested primarily in making money off of their t-shirts, but rather in spreading awareness of their band, their music, and their ideals. However, a capitalist (according to David P. Levine) is anyone whose income and wealth depend primarily on the market value of the property he or she owns (including the property of labor). The musicians earn income by performing -- they then use this income to acquire capital (t-shirts) which they sell for a profit. The only way a band could avoid being capitalist (within the framework of our capitalist system) would be to give their t-shirts away. That would be nice, but, of course, they can't. They're just trying to survive. To the dude who was knocking them for being capitalist: they're just trying to play the game and put food on the table. This is a capitalist society...they have no choice. --JP

yeah, that was my point. who gives a fuck if basket case uses a 7 chord progression? or if some other song uses a 2 chord progression? that doesnt make one song more creative than another. My point was that you shouldn't judge a song's ingenuity just by the chord progression that they use. FIRST OF ALL: If you're gonna diss a band, no matter what band it is, it's really, really stupid to give it 5 stars and then be like "they fuckin suck." It just looks like you're a confused individual. SECOND: To the guy who said NOFX=shit: do you mean they are the shit, or they are shit? And if they are shit, you have to back that up. There's no point in making a comment like "they fucking suck" or "they're shit" without backing it up with some evidence, cause you're never gonna convince anyone of anything that way. THIRD: To the guy who's arguing about chord progressions and says "how many ways can you arrange 4 notes in a scale?" First of all, they're chords, not notes. Second, why does it have to be 4? "Basket Case" has a 7-chord progression, the verse of "About a Girl" has a 2-chord progression, the verse of "All-Star Me" has a 3-chord progression. Yes, I agree that the standard 8-5-6-4 (D-A-Bm-G or C-G-Am-F, for example) is used a lot. But it's so damn catchy. Can you blame them for using it? That leads me to my last point. To everyone who's saying that there guys aren't real punk, and that their lyrics are shit because they're not singing about rebellion or angst: dude, they're just singing about what's on their mind. You think politics and rissues of social concern are important -- that's great. There are lots of bands out there that feel the same way. NFG think girls are important. Who are you to say who's right? What if I think giraffes are important, and I record a CD where I sing about how much I love giraffes. If the music is good, are you still gonna call it shit because of my "stupid" lyrics? That's not cool. Aiight I'm out. --JP

    Simple as this guys:
New Found Glory, along with every other major pop"punk" band's music is written in hopes to appeal to the masses, aka all of those teeny bopping trl people. These guys, and GC and all those other bands apparently enjoy the popularity. They pull away from the punk community by taking some of punk's inspirations and forming it so its more pleasing to the major label rep's ears. So let them do it..... then when everyone forgets about them, fuck em. They will never have the longevity of classic punk bands like BR and NOFX, and its their loss.

Isn't it D, A, B, G? And if you're gonna give pop punk bands shit for using that progression, why not give punk bands shit for using the C, G, A, F progression over and over again. Having the same progression as some other band isnt a big fucking deal. I defy you to make up a progression that hasnt been used by some other band already. What i think matters is the rhythm that they band puts over that progression, and if you're open-minded enough to listen to nfg, you would know that they have very creative and original rhythms. Face it, there are only so many ways you can arrange 4 notes in a major scale. Who the fuck cares if 2 bands used the same progression?!?!

I didn't read any of the comments before mine, but i can probably safely assume that it was all just about how pop punks sucks and how nfg and all of their fans should die. anyways, I liked this DVD a lot! The feature presentation (the post-mca one) was kind of lame and didn't really give you any insight into the band. it was also kind of annoying to watch because they'd show live footage, but have the cd versions of songs in the background. anyways, the score i gave this dvd is all due to the zine documentary in the bonus features section. it was really funny and, as stated in the review, it really let you get to know the band. The music videos were all good (my favorite being Dressed to Kill), except the new one, "Head on Collision". If you havent seen it on Nickelodeon's SlimeTime Live yet, don't go out of your way to see it. It's really really lame. yeah, so if you're a true nfg fan, then you probably already have it. If you kinda like them, i would suggest getting this if you can find it for cheap (i got it for 10).

Okay thats my review. and yes, i am a poser and i should die because i like new found glory and pop punk in general.

you'll notice that shai hulud and NFG seem to coordinate their touring plans lately, so that every time shai hulud is in south florida, NFG is too. Why do I hate them so much? Because they show up to the shai hulud show.. understandably, they're friends.. that guy was in the band. They have a great fucking time, its a great fucking show. Then, the next night, they go and play fucking shitty pop music to 4000 screaming teenage girls.
What does this mean? It means they're sellouts, and theres no denying it. They aren't making music because they LIKE it. They are making music that sticks in your head because it sells a lot of copies. They are in it for the money and the popularity. They have scene credibility, and are WILLING to be exploited and promoted to sell as many records as possible. They're a major label's dream and the bane of underground music in general.

So I'm not saying I only hate their music. I dislike their music because it it catchy and empty and irritating. I HATE them as human beings.
