Published on December 13th 2002 Ok, so this may be a little late in the game - but you were late a couple times in school, and the teacher always forgave you. So, have some sympathy on poor little New Jersey-native June Spirit, for they missed the first 8 classes of the day. Sure the kids didn't know them as much because, hell, half of them were already gone by the time the band finally stopped scratching their balls and released Teaching Superstition in July of 2002. But honestly, does that make them followers if all they wanted to do was rock and sing songs about how much that girl smells like the neighboring garden? It sure does, but i'll tell you this - they kicked the crap out of all those who've done it before them, and joined the ones that were able to withstand the beating. The album opens with an almost familiar acapella introduction, and right before you can even make it to the 'stop' button on your stereo, it wizzes right along to the second track, a powerful number simply called "Roundabout." From the moment you hear the singer's voice, you're hypnotized and instantly teleported into some weird kind of emo-only universe, and you can't help but relate to what this poor little guy is saying. The lyrics are incredibly catchy, and boy does that set the tone for the rest of the album - but don't even think that this is going to be an album of the same old boring scat you're used to - because, well, it isn't. Each song has it's own special little ring to it, at least for the first 7 songs or so, and then, sadly, you realized you're all emo'd out. There isn't a tear left to cry, and there wouldn't be even if you poured the hot water from your tea all over your eyes (sorry, bad joke, but you can't deny the lunchbox, you tool!). So, what does that mean? I guess it means this should have been an EP, and they shouldn't have wasted so much time trying to drag out the album as long as possible - punk is supposed to be short, and if you're going to break that code, be prepared for some backlash. Some of the songs stretch for nearly 5 minutes, and in emo, unless you're Jawbreaker, that just doesn't make the cut. But, hell, just because it gets boring doesn't make the songs intolerable, you just have to sit there with something else better to do while listening to it (so you don't notice). This album is an extremely enjoyable emo/pop-punk album, and it's recommended .. just remember what I said about the lunchbox!People who liked this also liked:           Please login or register to post comments. this album is absolutely f*king amazing I think that this is an amazing album. I really enjoy this band. If anyone's interested, if you like the june spirit, check out finding westerly. great cd; great song on cd: prologue this is one of the best emo bands ever. the music's worse than the name They could be called Shit Fuckers for all I care. It's about the fucking music. rites of springs is good, as is fugazi and jawbreaker. i like jets to brazil, at the drive in, as well as hot water music. all of these bands get the "emo" tag (although that's debatable). I think it's so funny how it's fashionable in the punk community to hate 'emo,' so all of a sudden every band you dislike is an 'emo band.' It's bad enough when emo kids try to define what emo is, but when you throw this into the mix, it becomes impossible. And it becomes a problem when I tell my friend about a certain band, and they ask what type of music. Because if I say emo, and then my friend hears some punker-than-thou talk about how bad 'emo' is, then my friend will discard the band immediately. it's "EMO" that's what... This review is about as lame as thois band. The jazz june would be alright, if there weren't a hundred other bands making the same drab indie rock crap. Nice try though. I enjoy this band, and they always seem to get a bad rap. You have to admit they attempt to do things other bands dont do, and this is no Ataris album. The CD is a good variety of songs, and it's enjoyable to listen to. I dont think there's any way to make everyone happy. There's bands that have original ideas, but get shot down because its not "normal". I dont mind hearing bands that sound like other bands. I think they are similar to other bands, but still have their differences, which makes them a completely different band. Not saying this review doesnt give them justice. No sir...there IS a good band with the word "June" in thier name. THE JAZZ JUNE. Now that's good stuff. these guys are good live, but get kinda boring on this disc. "Roundabout" is a really great song though. jawbreaker is NOT emo! what makes this review so bad? i think id rather have rodents chew on my balls than listen to this garage. If it's got 'june' in the title, you know it's whiny assed crap. You'll listen to this CD once and go ya its not bad. Second time you'll go man this is kind of boring. Third time you'll put it back in the case and know you'll never pull it out again. This is one of the worst reviews I've ever read on this site. i like lotsa bands that would be called emo but these guys just aren't good I don't know about this band. Kinda boring. |
