Ten bands. Sixty-nine minutes long. Seven bucks. Do I have your attention yet? Good. Well then, listen up.

Like it's predecessor that included such bands as Anti-Flag, the Unseen, the Casualties, and Blanks 77, this second installment of A.D.D.'s The Sound of Rebellion compilation is also comprised of some hardcore punk heavy-hitters. Ten bands are featured: the Unseen, Virus, Varukers, Lower Class Brats, Self Destruct, the Restarts, Tom and Bootboys, Bollocks, Funeral Dress, and Distraught, each playing three songs, including rare and unreleased tracks. Quite simply, this disc is a collective cry of "Punks Not Dead!"

Volume 2 is jam-packed with sheer and utter street punk chaos at its best. Not for the faint-hearted, this is what punk is all about-punk stripped down to its bare essentials-fast tempos, tempestuous drums, and gruff, snarling vocals. No whining. No mushy lovelorn songs. No slowing down for even a second. So, as can be seen, you better be a true fan of hardcore punk, especially since the music doesn't stray in the least bit and isn't too diverse. But, if you're into this in-your-face style and appreciate the subtle nuances, then by all means check this disc out.

In any case, some of the highlights are, of course, the Unseen, who offer a live version of the Misfits' "Halloween" and an unrelesed track "Suspect Device." The Virus' rendition of the Exploited's "I Believe in Anarchy" and live version of "Bomb Drop" are also standouts. Speaking of the Exploited, Japan's Bollocks play a blistering rendition of their "U.K. '82." While your at it, check out Bollocks' "We Are the Truth," a crushing and powerful tune. This is a pretty good band. The U.K.'s Varukers, those old stalwarts who formed in 1979, show why they've endored all these years, as they simply destroy on such songs as the thrashing, relentless "How Do You Sleep" and "No Where to Go." Likewise, Texas' Lower Class Brats, who never fail to impress, play two of the best songs on the entire disc: "Orphans Don't Run" and what could be an alternate title to this CD-the infectious "Chaos, Riot, Ruin." Boston's Self Destruct, composed of members of the Unseen and A Global Threat (how could these guys NOT deliver?) offer three massive tracks, including the manic opener "It's Living Hell" and "Diplomatic Immunity." Aggressive. Urgent. Defiant. Pissed off. That's what I'm talking about.

The only qualm I had with this disc was Belgium's Funeral Dress. The music is fine but there's something about them I just can't get into. I think it's the vocals-they're just too guttural and psychotic. Oh well, they can't all be winners.

But, all in all, what's so great about this CD is seeing that these bands are still keeping the no-nonsense street punk sound originated by those luminaries GBH, the Exploited, and the Varukers alive. It's a beautiful thing.

    My Score:

Its funny how early on in the comments people were arguing about labeling others, be it by mohawks or thrift store shirts. And now, they are actually having a conversation trying to help each other label the bands, and catagorizing them.

the cover is the shit. hell, i'll give this record a perfect 10 without having heard any of the songs just for the cover.

    My Score:

But wasnt Johnny Thunders a punk? Glam is Alice Cooper, shit like that. The New York Dolls barely ever played live in drag, and their sound is pretty basic-punk, and the lyrics sound pretty punk. Hell, if you consider The Velevet Underground to be punk (who I love, but dont really consider "punk"), then the New York Dolls are kinda hard to overlook.

    My Score:

I totally agree-you are right that for the most part, the other British bands to follow the Pistols weren't about chaos, like the Clash and the Adverts. But many of them were "chaotic"-the Damned, for one - although they didn't call for destruction. More chaotic in their sound I guess, so fast at that time. Anyway, New York Dolls weren't a "punk" band-they were glam. They influenced punk, but were not considered a "punk" band.

"the British punk scene-Sex Pistols-which was chaos and "destroy!""

Its broad generalzations like that that confuse young mall punks. A few British bands that never were anarchists, or politicos: the Jam, the Buzzcocks, Schoolgirl Bitch, the Damned, and alot of others I dont have time to talk about. Just because Sex Pistols were the first (and greatest) UK punk band, it doesnt mean every band after them cloned them.

By the way, early punk in New York would probably be the New York Dolls.

That's so messed up. The Ramones sang about anarchy? Early punk-the Ramones-the whole NY scene was completely different from the British punk scene-Sex Pistols-which was chaos and "destroy!"

I totally agree. I like Bad Religion, but know for a fact that they are overrated. Kids these days just buy their stuff like they're the first punk band. Here is a direct quote for a conversation I had a few weeks back, from the idiot I was talking to. I was telling him that punk started far before 1984, and he was disagreeing:

"i dont like those bands because all they are are a bunch of dead guys who made some songs about the politics in britain and stuff, i think that the real pioneers of punk rock are like bar religion and nofx and stuff"

Not only that, he thinks the Ramones sung about anarchy. But knowing the people who frequent this site, they'll probably agree with him.

This is punk rock!!!!! sorry but a lot of your pansy ass renditions of todays "punk rock" is minimal 4 minute songs with 12 different chord progressions and red punk rock shirts!(90% of which are purchased at hot topic). There is a selected few punk rockers out there that actually enjoy this style of anarchy punk rock or old school or whatever you call it, so if you dont like it, fuck off and get outta our way. Ignorant people piss me off and on that note.................................................... I'm out this muthafucka!

rebellion is great only when you have a good reason for it. I mean, if you are doing it to sound cool then fuck off, if you are some southerner claiming to be a "rebel" with your "rebel" flag because you are a racist then FUCK YOU, but if you are a rebel against hatred, against society's bullshit, against ignorance, against bush then RIGHT ON!

I totally agree. It's almost like people get pissed cause people wear leathers jacket and have mohawks. Almost like they feel threatend. It shouldn't matter what you look like, and alot of you fucks feel that these punks are out to get you or something, because they dress a certain way. Grow the fuck up and stop judging people, and their music based on looks.

Rather you like it or not, there would be NONE of the music you like if it wasnt for the guys who sung about "anarchy and shit". You're a hopeless case, but I'm not worried because next year the new trend will come along and I wont have to meet people like you at shows.

Dude, what the hell are you talking about? You said that there are problems in society (which duh, there are) and it seemed to me like you were infering that "old-school" punks singing about anarchy and bullshit like that was somehow going to change things. I simply stated in different words that the very idea of a bunch of those fashion punk cretins changing anything more than the laces on their boots is stupid.
