Review by: Billy Taint See others by this writer Only registered users can post comments Published on January 7th 2003 For those of you who have never heard Blood For Blood, two things can be said: 1. You're missing out on one of the greatest hardcore bands touring today, and 2. No record collection can be complete without BFB's latest, "Outlaw Anthems". Blood For Blood is an old school style hardcore band from Boston, MA. After 4 releases, they developed quite a following made up of fans to similar acts such as Agnostic Front and Madball. One common complaint with BFB, however, is that they sing about the same old topics in every single song - being poor, being white trash, and their hatred for society. Well this album is no different. In fact, the band may even go overboard with it at times. The first track is an intro titled "A Post Card From The Edge". Like many BFB intro's, it starts with a bar room scene of yelling, talking, and cursing. However, this time around it goes on and on and on. By the end of this intro, you feel like you've just listened to a good 2 tracks. And that's not a good thing. However, the quality of the songs that follow immediately make up for the sub-par intro. "Mother Dear" and "Ain't Like You" are very typical BFB songs. Loud, fast, aggressive, sing-along style chorus's, and some of the most in-your-face beatdowns ever written. It's hard to listen to the beatdown in "Mother Dear" without wanting to pick up the change right then and there. Later in the CD, most noteably on "White Trash Anthem", Blood For Blood takes a different route than usual. Guitarist and primary songwriter White Trash Rob (brother to Mark Lind, singer of The Ducky Boys) takes over on vocals. The songs he sings are generally a lot poppier and upbeat sounding than BFB regularly does. This of course compared to Buddha, the regular singer, and his low, rough voice. The album closes with probably two of the highlights to any listener. First is "Bloodshed", which is a cover of oi! legends The Bruisers. BFB does this song excellent and goes beyond the original version ever could have. Following this is "She's Still a Bitch (Called Hope)", which is a remake of one of BFB's own songs from early on in their careers. This is also an excellent track that is sure to make any hardcore kid a fan of the band. My only complaint with this CD is that I felt the band was trying to be controversial. I can honestly say the word "fuck" is used at minimum 4 times in each track, with the exception of the intro of course. Lines such as "Fucking your pussy was like fucking the wound from a shotgun blast" and "If you don't like it you can suck my dick!" (which is repeated over and over) and "Fuck you! Fuck you! Fuck you and fuck society too!" The mindlessness of it just seemed to take away from a near perfect record.
Despite that one minor complaint, this record is a MUST have for any old school punk or hardcore kid. Download "Tear Out My Eyes" and it's almost a guarantee that you will want to buy this album. If you like Blink or Sum or Mest, I'm telling you now, this is NOT the record for you. But if you're looking for an amazingly catchy, aggressive and hard album, pick Blood For Blood's "Outlaw Anthems" up as soon as possible. Without a doubt, one of the greatest releases of 2002.

i love bfb so fuck you you and u You idiots that posted below about them attracting racists....need to look at the color of the lead singer. I'll give you a hint he isn't white.... I can't believe how much shit these guys get... What about some tongue-in-cheek, eh? I mean, yeah, the lyrics are laughable, but do you really think BFB is about intelligence? And what's the deal with taking bands seriously all the time? I love both BFB and Leftover Crack, that doesn't make me a Satan-worshipping Nazi (I think). And yeah, this album is great. Try to put it on real loud and drink hard - I promise, it's gonna knock your balls to the ground. best hardcore band ever(to agnostic front) "These guys put out the most sensitive emo ever. Making the Juliana And if they are against skin heads why haven't they voiced a discomfort for them at shows. Black Flag had racists at their shows and they let them know they didn't like it.1. maybe because they cant control who likes them or not2. if they do voice and opinion does that mean that they will stop listening to it "oh no the band doesnt want me to listen to them and they dont like me... well i guess i should take their advice and throw out all my cds"and 3. they arent black flag-BostonMusicGuyoh PS. Blood for Blood is ok... nothing spectacular I don't know...the album's music is ok, but the lyrics aren't too clever. the singer is mexican named buddha. the guitarist/sometimes singer/songwriter is white trash rob. if he is mexican why is he called white trash rob? I'm confused. And if they are against skin heads why haven't they voiced a discomfort for them at shows. Black Flag had racists at their shows and they let them know they didn't like it. The singer is mexican, They ain't racists, they don't sing about white pride or any of that crap. This band is beyond shitty. They didn't say the band didnt mind racism, they said alot of skinheads like them. There is a difference. I've shat out better lyrics than that. These guys put out the most sensitive emo ever. Making the Juliana Theory sound like Slayer, the weepy anthems about their girlfriends might just be too pathetic to be worth listening to. But when you need a good cry, be sure to put on Blood For Blood. so in other words the band doesn't mind racism. thats pretty fucked. I don't think the band themselves are racist, but they do attract alot of skinheads. And before anyone says something about non-racist skinheads, I mean the racist kind. Blood For Blood are good for a laugh, nothing more. Listen to Ramallah, Rob Lind's other band. Ironicaly, i hear the singer was stabbed. Bad band, bad lyrics, tough guy shit at its worst. Musically a great band, but i just can't stand that macho shit. When you tattoo naked women on your arms you must have some serious problem, if you ask me I don't know...these guys have some good sounding songs, but im not sure of their intentions. I don't want to sound like an ass, but these guys aren' some "we are white and opressed" assholes. I'm white and poor, but I don't think they should put color into the issue, sounds like a racist thing....sounds like skins are attracted to their shows. I may be wrong....tell me that I am an ass and should be shot if i am. Sometimes I can be very wary of stuff. oooo, these guys sound tough. please don't beat me up! please! i'll give you a dollar if you don't scream at me and remove the word blood from your name! Some very stupid and childish lyrics... this record isn't as good as 'spit my last breath' but it's a fine exit from the world of hardcore. rest in piece, bfb. in re: to the 'why can't epitaph sign bands like bfb?' .. because epitaph has this thing where they can only produce a good album every 3 years, despite their extensive artist catalog. They're solid, but nothing that amazing, there's mucb better hardcore around right now. And their lyrics get more and more rediculous, they're just descending into self parody. Why can't Epitaph sign bands like BFB?????????????? "here we goooooooooooooooooo, blood! for! blood!" |
