While I’m not a big fan of Epitaph’s Punk-O-Rama series, I was more than a little curious when they announced they were going to start up a DVD set. I figured that the idea had a lot of potential if it was done right. After all, it’s pretty hard to get to see most videos of Epitaph bands. I, for one, don’t want to sit around 40 minutes waiting for one to download on my computer. So once they announced the play list for the DVD, I was looking forward to it’s release.

The videos:
1. Rancid “Nihilism”
2. Refused “New Noise”
3. Bad Religion “American Jesus”
4. NOFX “Leave It Alone”
5. The Offspring “Come Out & Play (Keep ‘Em Separated)”
6. Rancid “Salvation”
7. Pennywise “Same Old Story”
8. Millencolin “Kemp”
9. The Bouncing Souls “True Believers”
10. The (International) Noise Conspiracy “Up For Sale”
11. Hot Water Music “Paper Thin”
12. Descendents “I’m the One”
13. Dropkick Murphys “Barroom Hero”
14. Guttermouth “She’s Got the Look”
15. Division of Laura Lee “Need to Get Some”
16. Rancid “GGF”
17. Death By Stereo “Desperation Train”
18. Pennywise “Fuck Authority”
19. NOFX “Stickin’ in my Eye”
20. Dropkick Murphys “The Gauntlet”
21. The Bouncing Souls “East Side Mags”
22. Bad Religion “Sorrow”

Epitaph picked some classic songs, but at the same time left enough off the DVD to ensure Volume 2 to be equally good. I sat down and watched all 22 videos, most of which I hadn’t seen, and got pretty much what I expected. Typical music videos.

One note, Rancid has the most videos on the disc with 3 separate songs. However, all 3 videos are exactly alike. I understand that many times less is more, but Rancid really beat the hell out of that saying. 3 black and white videos of the band simply playing the song in a studio rehearsal room. I’m not complaining, it was just an observation. The videos aren’t too significant or distinct is all.

One of the highlights, for me anyway, included The Offspring’s “Come Out & Play”. I haven’t seen this video since 1994 and it’s strange watching it now. Singer Dexter Holland actually seems almost nervous or shy in the video. Compare that to a newer Offspring video.

Not to mention the video for “True Believers” from The Bouncing Souls. I was personally at this video shoot and can honestly say that this video captures the excitement not only at that Souls show, but any Souls show. This is one of the best, if not the best, videos on the collection.

As most DVD’s do, this disc comes with some great bonus features. First is a great documentary on the nickel-and-dime beginnings of Epitaph Records. It’s a great piece, with interviews from label founder Brett Gurewitz, Fletcher from Pennywise, Fat Mike of NOFX, and many Epitaph staff members. There really isn’t much talk about any bands on the label other than the original 7 signed (L7, Bad Religion, NOFX, Pennywise, Down By Law, The Offspring, Rancid), but it is still a great story. Other bonus features are live performances from both The Bouncing Souls and Bad Religion, as well as behind the scenes footage at the video shoot for Pennywise’s “Fuck Authority”.

All in all, this DVD is great and is worth your money. Like I said, it’s not every day you get a chance to see these videos. Plus, Epitaph is supposedly selling it extremely cheap, as they do with the Punk-O-Rama CD series. Definitely worth checking out.

Jesus people, quit shitting on other bands, its like you have nothing better to do. All of these bands are good when compared to mainstream shit. BTW most bands out of Sweden are great, don't pick and choose just accept that they are good.

    My Score:

This DVD rocked. The Refused video, although not by any means my favorite band, was an amazing video, it really complimented the music perfectly. And for the record, the best band out of Sweden is not Millencolin, or that shitty surf cover band, but RANDY!!! Check out Randy, you will not be disappointed...

    the keiser has spoken

About Rancid on the dvd...the videos are pretty similar, but I question if youve even watched them.Golden Gate Fields from s/t 2000 appears on the dvd,and it is in COLOR.Also, from the Lets Go videos, more appears then just the bands playing in a studio.Misinformers piss me off...And for the comment on the ...and out come the wolves videos,I expect them to make an appearence on the next volume. The NOFX videos on this disc are both classic.Guttermouth...I dont think I need to say much about them exept it isnt worth even viewing.

nah i dont think so, there is only one ultiamte band that came out from sweden and kicked punk rock asses, that was NO FUN AT ALL, i personally think Mr.Brett made a misstake when he took Millencolin instead, NO FUN AT ALL would have been the better choice, well maybe in the future some albums will get reissued, like they did with Turbonegro. www.nofunatall.com if you want to hear the best european punk band

i only said astream because if i would say for example "dramatic dynamics" you would have no idea about what i was talking about.

dramatic dynamics is 100 times better than hot water music, anti-flag, interpol and about every other band you talk so fucking much about.

    REFUSED ARE FUCKING SUCKS

and i don't see how refused are so fucking original. i mean the bands i used to see refuse OPEN for sounded exactly the same as refused.

then you dont a very high standard, oh well if its fine for you... just take the video sorrow by bad religion, there are two versions on the net floaing around, not any of them has the quality of this version, not to metnion the annoying channel and ripper logo in it, taht pops up...

    My Score:

Oh and to the first poster: YOU CANT DOWNLOAD ALL VIDEOS AT THE SAME QUALITY FROM THE NET. Perhaps thats what you think, but most ripped videos are TV captures and VHS captures, digitalized in lower resolution and quality not to speak of the loss of sound quality. Well now that this is out, they will be also on the net sooner or later, but still they wont match the same quality and actually everybody who wastes his time to rip this DVD cant be smart, its cheap, its comfortable to use, and its a pain in the ass to rip a music video dvd, believe me, i did it. go buy it and you get a quality you wont get at any place of those videos, except if someone makes an image of the dvd, lets say that would be around 6 to 7 gb or higher...

    My Score:

I wish the had put ALL videos on the disc, since it should have fit. If you think thats not possible, have a look at "Hang the VJ" DVD by Burning Hearts Records, most vidoes of that are shitty, but still, that doesnt make them smaller in size. Anyway great DVD hope more to come from Epitaph.

"Most (99%) of you's ever lived under socialism or communism, so can't really comment on it."

    That's just silly.

As far as economic systems go, we all have seen the influence of socialism and lived under it. The US and most of europe live under mixed economies - not pure free markets.

And as for democracy vs. communism, they both lead the same place - despotism.

Sorry, but he copped that move Mick Jagger, who in turn had copped it from James Brown. Actually, I've seen plenty of other singers do that move that "defines rock star".

To quote Dave Chappelle, "James Brown is the baddest motherfucker in showbusiness."

First of all: Melvyl, you may be the dumbest fucker I've had the displeasure of hearing from in a long time. Here's why:
    1. Your name is Melvyl
    2. There is nothing wrong with Communism... in theory. It's perfect, it just tends towards exposure of human imperfections... like Capitalism.
    3. Refused aren't even Communists, are you stupid? Socialism is not Communism. Your blanket statement was bad enough, being incorrect makes it all the more dumber.
    4. Sorry if you dislike originality, but that's what Refused was, along with incredible vocals, musicianship, writing, and flat-out rocking. Best....band....ever.
    5.Shut up.
