I was so prepared to hate this. I was ready to throw this CD out of my window and laugh as it hit Moldy in the head walking by my room. I was ready to finally turn a CD into a drink coaster, something I had always joked about but never done. I was ready to tear this little piece of shit band named after a character in a halfway decent adaptation of "Peter Pan" a brand spankin' new asshole. I mean, c'mon - isn't this that New Found Glory-ripoff band that has a song called "Dip Shit?" They have to suck.

So what in the hell happened?

It pains me to admit this, but what we have here is a 3-song EP that rocks me pretty hard. Now not *incredibly* hard, mind you - this won't make my Top 10 list or anything at the end the year, but I could feasibly see myself playing this on my radio show in between stuff like Brand New and Taking Back Sunday, or maybe throwing "Set It Off" [the best of the three songs] on a mix CD snuggled in between the Ataris' "San Dimas High School Football Rules" and Midtown's "A Faulty Foundation."

The band's musicianship seems top notch, as everything sounds picture perfect on this [incredibly short] EP. Drummer Mike Jimenez has that Fat Wreck drum sound down; all that touring with Strung Out must've pushed him that way. My only big complaint is singer Scott Seller's voice. It seems a bit off-pitch at times, and a tad too whiny for my preference. But if you're a fan of all the emotional pop-punk bands I mentioned earlier, you'll eat this up with a spoon [as I'm currently doing right now].

I guess what I'm trying to say is this is good. Really good.

Whoo, that was harder to type than you think.

Oh yeah, this is also an enhanced CD chock full of live stuff, interviews, and more, but I've yet to watch it. I'm afraid it will make me like Rufio more.

    My Score:

Rufio's music is all right, kind of in a Strung Out lite vein. I might listen to it if it wasn't for the vocals which are more high pitched whining to nab the band some 16 year old groupie tang. At least they're young enough that it's not an entirely sick cause.

Or maybe their all the same because blink 182 and good charlotte made a lot of money playing the simplest and most mindless music around. These bands have no integrity or ingenuity like those old school punk bands you mentioned.

You people are retarded. Talking about how all these bands are carbon copies. Did you notice how everyband you drop, NFG, Rufio, Good Charlotte, all these bands with all the members under the age of 25. Did it ever occur to you that maybe they are all alike because they all have the same influences, all grew up with the same music. ALl those old school punk bands sound the same, but you dont knock them. Y? because of street cred or some bullshit? Fuck yous all. What about all these bands coming from new york that you guys love to hate. TBS FINCH etc. o shit you think it might be because they came from the same areas where they were influenced by the same shit. fuck.

It sounds like he is trying SOOOOOOO hard to sing the same way, and it just sounds bad, i can't believe nitro let this happen. But i guess that's whay happens when you sign bands that are 18 years old

    Dignin,
If you want to argue about originality, maybe we could talk about how Zeppelin and Hendrix ripped off blues progressions. They took a formula and added their own style to it. We're not here to argue originality (because NONE of the bands on this site would pass that test), we're here to talk about good music. Rufio writes some really good music. Yes, I listen to all of the bands you name dropped, but I can still admit good songs when I hear them.

RUFIO IS UNORIGINAL. Thats it. Go listen to music with integrity, and if you want great guitar work listen to led zeppelin or jimi hendrix. So what if their better than nfg, thats not saying anything.

And what is this crappy crappy trend? All we do these days is complain about trends: "Oh they're just another scramo band," "Oh they just do the garage-rock thing," "Oh they're just another pop punk band." I'm sorry dingin or whatever the hell you're name is, but until you can brove that Rufio isn't above the rest, nobody will believe you. And I'm all for Bright Eyes and Cursive, but they are entirely different and bear no relation to a Rufio argument. You have your own opinion but it's different music, and I'll take Rufio over NFG anyday, and I'll take Bright Eyes over them too, and I'll take my opinion over yours.

    My Score:

The point is rufio is not good music and they sound and act just like NFG, right down to the whiny high voice, boring lyrics about girls, mall punk style, and synconized jumps. They are apart of a crappy crappy trend that will goe away, and rufio will disapear because they have no originality. How bout you ditch this band and listen to the one you or I mentioned?

Posted by Anonymous on Monday, March 3, 2003 at 4:11 PM (EST)
    My Score:

Ok, we could all keep name dropping obscure bands, or we could talk about the merits of Rufio. The music is really good. Its well-written and well-done.

Why don't we compare Bright Eyes and Cursive to the Beatles, Zeppelin, or Bob Dylan?

Good music is good music is good music.

    I like this EP - a lot. I can't wait for the full-length.

okay, how about weston. rufio is shit to weston. they were pop punk. music with generic pop structures can be good if it shows a respect to the conventions of that type of music nailed to a science over the last billion years, rufio doesn't. i dont care about these whitebread heartbreaks. pass the j church for my pop needs.

    My Score:

You missed the whole point. This was purely about pop punk. Fugazi, Cursive, etc., are completely different then this type of music. Plus, Rufio isn't a rip off of NFG. Pop punk is a rip-off of everyting, and buddy, NFG wasn't the first to do it.

Posted by dignin on 2003-03-03 00:36:18
    My Score:

music to me isn't about who can write the cutest and catchiest riffs. Rufio is a rip off of NFG and thats a fact. Its some bullshit trend that also avril and smple plan are apart of. I agree with waste listen to fugazi or any otherinventive heartfelt music. Not just some dudes crooning about girls. And don't get me wrong singing about that isn't necessarily a bad thing, but there are a lot of bands who do it better than rufio(cursive, bright eyes, elliot smith).

    My Score:

All of these songs are better than average pop punk songs played with emotion and heart. That's it. I like them. Ya know why? Here. Throw on the any of the common pop-punk stuff you hear all the time (NFG, Starting Line, Midtown, Alkaline Trio). Yeah, I said Alkaline Trio. Keep reading your judging 'punks.' Listen to Matt Skiba's guitar work. Ooooo. Kinda. As for Rufio, it's way more intricate and just as catchy. Listen 'punks' and then prove me wrong. The only thing Alkaline Trio have over Rufio is their lyrics. Rufio's lyrics ARE trite but hey, they can write a hook. I'll admit that I would rather listen to Skiba anyday over the singer from Rufio's yelp but I'm saying if there's a band that I want out there on MTV as our new generation's punk, I'd much rather have Rufio than NFG or Good Charlotte. Rufio's guitar work rivals the best (watch their lead guitarist live: I saw them with Thrice and he was just as good as their guitarists, I'm right, don't even try before you check him out playing) and they're the best of pop-punk out there. I don't care if you don't like them. But they're above the rest. Give them a chance. And if you don't like them fine. I bet they wouldn't give a shit anyway.

sounds to me like you're somebody who would like Rufio without question."

Good review, and good band, but like the guy said below...who would ever go out and spend $7 or $8 on 3 songs (I am guessing that is what stores will be pricing this as).

ok.. well even if you dont like this ep.. or their cd 'perhaps, i suppose'.. they are an amazing band live.. i saw them with taking back sunday and it was pretty fucking amazing...rufio is definitely pop punk but atleast they can play their instruments...

their guitarist still fucking kicks ass..

seriously, the guitarist is fucking amazing, he has MAD SKILLZ and he's amazing live.

but seriously, this singer is just a guy from the street, it destroys everything... well, atleast it fits better on this cd.. he sounded like REALLY REALLY REALLY out of place on the first cd.

I'm sorry but I can't buy into this hype. I listented to "Perhaps, I suppose" and it was just bland pop-punk. The new song that's posted sounds like a reject from that album but a bit polished. Sorry but I say don't believe the hype. Don't believe Rufio.

The review is not horrible or horrid or whatever you can called it, it's a honest review. Most of you don't like Rufio but this EP sound good no matter what you think. Set is Off & Don't hate me are good song with nice guitar and chorus period. Give it a try before crying ITS F*CKING SUCKS.
