Sometimes, bands just need to hang it up.

Case in point: the Mad Caddies. This California sextet has been kicking around the scene for more than just a few years, dropping 3 full lengths and 1 EP on the world before this, their newest offering. Now I've always been a fan of the Caddies, but even as a fan I can readily admit that the band peaked with "Duck And Cover" and the subsequent "The Holiday Has Been Cancelled" EP. "Quality Softcore" had some good songs but was iffy overall, and the group's last disc, "Rock The Plank," was unmemorable at best. So like I said before, some bands just need to hang it up.

There is absolutely no new ground being tread on the Caddies' fourth full-length. The mellow ska ["Drinking For 11"] has been done before. The fast punk with "let's get fucked up!" lyrics ["Contraband" and "Riot"] has been done before. The slow jams ["Spare Change?"] have been done before. The dixieland-influenced tracks ["Last Breath"] have been done before. Basically, this band is all out of ideas.

That doesn't necessarily mean they can't still sound fresh and exciting by recycling old ideas; it just means they *don't* sound fresh and exciting. When I was 16, this stuff would just slay me. But this CD just feels like I've aged whereas the Caddies have stayed in a rudeboy time capsule for the last 5 years or so, only being released every 1 1/2 years to write more of the same ol', same ol'.

It pains me to tell you not to buy this, as the Mad Caddies were one of the first bands I ever really got into. But if you own any other Caddies release [especially "Duck and Cover" or "The Holiday Has Been Cancelled"], you've already heard all these songs in a better form. Pass.

tenwestchaser ure a bit off mark there. Yes , this album isnt bad , but if you can remember they have done it all before. County themes have been done in the likes of crew cut chuck and falling down sounds similar leaving. Everything they have done here has been done. Sure the songs arnt bad but if you have listened to every other caddies album then you can tell that this is really beginning to wear thin

This album has some shibby reggae songs....but other songs like rockupation just kill it.
Prety dissapointing overall. Too slow, too poppy. Hopefully thenew album comin out this year will sound more like duck and cover (the best mc cd)

I personally didnt think much of this album at first either, but then i actually decided to take a closer listen. i must have played the album over 5 times at least, and ive loved it ever since. its a welcome change from the cookie-cutter ska thats apparent in a lot of bands today

This review deffinetly misses the mark...by about a mile. There is so much going on on this album that I don't see how anyone can say that it's just the same old caddies and nothing new or special. They tried their hand at so many different sounds and styles on this record I just don't see how you can say that! The title track is has an amazing new spanish sound, and "good intentions" has a country vibe just to name a few. This review fucking sucks. Score is for the review.

Yeah, when I first read part of this review I did not know what album Scott was referring to since I knew that "Just One More" is probably my favorite and IMO he best Mad Caddies offering. Nothing new? Yeah I guess there is a lot of good music already out there. Who needs more right? I wish the people who bitch about stuff being "done before" and "good but passe'" would apply that nuevo retard shit to what they eat and starve to death because "didn't that restaurant serve chicken the other day?". Good is Good man.

Why didnt you interview Chuck? Is it that you didnt have the balls to do it or is it that you knew when chuck questioned your review you would have no educated replies. My personal opinion is that, this is by far, the best mad caddies cd released.

I just don't get how you could've have listened to this cd the amount of time you said you did, and not have found it great.

I think the mad caddies not only spent a good amount of time on this cd, but they put a lot of effort into it, and that shows in every single one of the tracks. I can safely say I theroughly enjoyed 90% of the tracks on this cd, if not 90%, then more.

I can sort of respect your review but telling the man he ripped off his sound, is unacceptable.

I Hope the caddies keep rocking hard and playing those crazy shows they play, and hopefully we'll see another CD as great as "Just One More".

A- What did you think of the review on punknews.org for it?
C- I thought that obviously that guy didn’t really listen to the record. It sounds like he kind of just scanned through it because everything he was saying was contradictory. He was saying ‘oh Dixieland-punk thing that’s been done before’ yeah by us, we’re the only ones that I’ve ever heard that have done it. What’s wrong with a band sticking to their own sound, that’s the only sound we can claim we originated. It was really harsh, if someone wants to say ‘yeah it’s okay’ that’s fine but he ripped it apart and I think it was pretty rude, especially that we worked on this record for like nine months, most of us took second jobs, stayed at home and not toured, strictly made this record. It’s like sweat, that’s our life sweat on that CD and we’re really proud of it.

    go chuck :) u hottie, u.

    >>"Rock The Plank," was unmemorable at best.

    You're a funny man.

    >>So like I said before, some bands just need to hang it up.

You need to go review some other shit because obviously you don't have ears for this music that's out of your league.

    >>There is absolutely no new ground being tread on the Caddies' fourth full-length

The only thing that's the same on this album is the instruments they're using. The songs are more well-crafted, production is much better, the vocals are better, and there is just such a perfect blend of different stuff in there.

    >>The fast punk with "let's get fucked up!" lyrics has been done before

In the lyric sheet, they mark out all of the words except for fuck and fight and high, stuff like that. In this release, there's a compare and contrast in 2 ways of life. One being the "contraband" view. "Drunk and lying passed out on the floor. What for?" That contradicts contraband. And I think contraband was written to kind of let people know how ridiculous it is to be that extreme with the partying.

    >> The dixieland-influenced tracks ["Last Breath"] have been done before

Punk rock songs have been done before. Are all punk bands just out of ideas? Eat shit.

    >>you've already heard all these songs in a better form. Pass.

I was fucking floored when I listened to this CD for the first time. It was all new. And I DO have their previous releases.

This terrible review reminds me of hardcore thug-rapper reviewing a Bob Dylan CD. If you're going to bash something, back it up with something besides "I just don't like it"

I got into punk because of albums like this. I'll admit, my main music of choice is reggae and I started listening to punk when I was exploring bands that mixed reggae and punk together. Nowadays I love a lot of punk bands, but honestly, I'm probably not as die hard about it as a lot of you on this site. That being said, for me, this album is brilliant and I think it's the best thing they've done to date. I think a lot of other ska fans will be quite pleased that there are still bands like this not ashamed to put out this kind of music. On the other hand, if you're more into the traditional punk sound, you probably won't get that much out of this. That's just my opinion of course. Also, this review may not be the most "in-depth" discussion of the cd, but I won't knock Scott for it because he got his point across well. I disagree with him, but it's not going to lessen my enjoyment of the album because someone else slammed it.

pretty good cd. i mean its always cool to hear ska these days if you were ever a ska fan, cuz its few and far between now. but when they lost carter they lost 1/3 their songwriting. and it shows. cater wrote some of their best songs, including 'booze cruise' and 'we'll start to worry when the cynics..' two of the better songs on the last album. however this album still has some great songs (drinking for 11, leavin, 10 west) but overall i think its weaker than the last couple (except quality softcore, which i never albums really liked save a few songs).

Yeah, i've noticed that too, they do play some of their songs a little slower, but the thing is like, they play the songs PERFECTLY. They're super tight and the musicianship is incredible. Its an adjustment from the first time i saw them 2 years ago, with Carter, but they were fast and kinda sloppy. They rule now, best live band i've seen in a long time.

Maybe they weren't allowed to drink at the studio... I didn't think it was that low-energy at all, but maybe you were expecting Duck and Cover again. I bet they will pull these songs off live sweet as hell though.

I also appreciate how you're willing to give low reviews for stuff you don't like, but you might wanna check and make sure the equalizer on your stereo wasn't still set on emo. That would explain any boring sound.

My Favorite bands are Indian Summer, Mineral, Pedro The Lion, Christie Front Drive, Further Seems Forever, American Football, Death Cab For Cutie, Braid, and The White Octave...and I'm in a 7 piece skapunk band (www.thirdgradescuffle.com) Get real people, I'm sure Scott still likes ska related stuff too, so please save your "shut up, emo fag" comments.

    And yes, Jade Tree owns.

On a side note, does anyone else notice that it seems a skapunk uprising could be on the way? Man, I'm all for it.

this review is horrible and you can tell it's biased.

if the reviewer knew anything about the band then he would have realized the new sounds brought into the cd and the greatness of it. i believe the reviewer is just too infatuated with emo and believe that ska is immature. if he would have actually reviewed the cd instead of his opinions he would have found that drinking for 11 wasn't boring but was a great song displaying chuck's great vocal ability and the power and emotion he can convey with his voice.

actually, i had written a review but messed up one part of it and had to go back and lost the entire thing...i gave a song by song review instead of saying the cd sucked and skipping through it.

and i wasn't biased either, i pointed out that 10 west sounds alot like time bomb and that a couple songs weren't great. but my review was much more indepth than this.

reviewer, if you're going to review a cd, review the entire cd; don't give a synopsis that has many holes in it. this is a poor review that seems more like it was forced upon the reviewer.

not to mention you didn't even touch upon the fact that they had a song with latin influences which is new for the band and game show which was a new sound from them and a fun song with a catchy hornline.....i just might write my review again later today when i get home from school.

alllll right. this is one damn good album, and in my opinion QUITE the step up from rock the plank. this album is really the epitome of what the mad caddies have set out to become: a ska punk band with dixieland influences. those dixieland influences came through so strong with this album (ex: villains, Rockupation). all you critics, do one thing for me, go ahead and pull your heads out of your asses, it looks really uncomfortable. that is all.

I for one, have to agree with everything Scott has said in this review. While I am not usually a fan of Scott's opinions or reviews in general, I'd have to say that I think he's right on with this one - because I understand exactly the way he feels.

He never said bands have to progress to sound fresh and interesting - all he said is that the caddies don't.

and by saying it woulda gotten him when he was 16? me too. but you know what? it IS possible to grow out of a certain musical style. it's not just "ska-is-untrendy-so-lets-hate-it" - it's just moving elsewhere.

and jade tree is one of the best, most diverse labels out there. don't fuck with.

all of strike anywhere/liftime/kid dynamite/pedro the lion/promise ring/explosion/turning point/damnation AD have records out on this label. and that's not HALF of what they've put out.

i'm sorry, but quite a bit more diverse than the label the caddies are on - and i hate to compare, because i love FAT - while maintaining quality.

You know maybe saying something like "If you liked their first two albums, and didn't grow up to be an opinionated, indie rock loving, jack ass, you'll like this offering." Ok, I know now you'll tell me to write my own review, but I don't really have the time.

First of all, who cares if they didn't change their sound again for this disc, the songs pretty much all kick ass, and every song (even if the sound has been heard before on Duck and Cover) is still definitely memorable.

Lastly, I love how because you are now not 16, this band is not good enough for you, because they didn't evolve. Just because you are older, doesn't mean the Caddies have stayed the same age. Result: Listen to the record again, and then email me here Cnofxrun@hotmail.com we will chat

Well, it's true that Mad Caddies haven't evolved into super technical Math-Ska, but that just isn't who they are. They are about drinking and partying, which this album is perfect for both of those activites. I actually think this album is up there with Duck & Cover. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, I just saw Mad Caddies a week or so ago, they are just incredibly good live. Hearing Goleta, Days Away, Falling Down, and especially Mary Melody live is one of the first good things about this year. This band should only start to think about hangin it up if they're still playing the same record in 5 or so years. So far, they've still got some great music left in them, you just need to learn how to rock out with your cock out, Scott.
