| UnearthThe Stings Of Conscience2001 Eulogy
Review by: FortyMinutesWest See others by this writer Unearth (link) Only registered users can post comments Published on March 14th 2003 There are alot of bands doing the metalcore thing these days. Well you have those bands, then you have Unearth. It's rare that you hear the peak of a genre on a bands debut full length, but I think that's exactly what Unearth did with this CD. The dual guitar work is intricate and just flat out jaw-dropping. This is what really defines Unearth's sound, both guitar players weaving a complex thread of melodic riffs. The vocals, surprisingly enough, are on the hardcore side of things. So instead of deep gutteral growls we get some hardcore screaming, another thing that helps to set this band apart from it's comtemporaries. Lyrically, the band is fairly socially and politically conscious. They don't take the broad route that some bands do lyrically, they make sure they cut straight to the point. Lines like "Put down your goddamned weapons. We are slaughtering our own sons." don't leave much up to interpretation. A variety of topics are covered:war, the impending struggle for resources, not giving up, etc. The drumming is great and somehow manages to keep pace with the frantic guitars. There are double bass rolls, but unlike a lot of bands, they are well placed and not just used for the sake of being heavy. Believe me, this band doesn't have to try to be heavy, they do it effortlessly. I know a lot of you probably wrote this one off as soon as you read the word metalcore, but I urge you to give this a chance. Just because alot of bands are doing something doesn't mean one of them can't do it extremely well. Please login or register to post comments. What are the benefits of having a Punknews.org account?
i agree, truely the best when it comes to metalcore you should see these guys live, its fucking great Fucking Amazing Band. Unearth must not be in your web of cool harcore eh Soulbleed? i agree. heh, on all my reviews on this site, only one has gotten 5 stars. 5 stars = perfect .. and it's based on artistic quality, high historical importance, impact, etc .. and believe me, unearth (while a good band) fits none of those. Because while its not a perfect album, it is in my opinion the pinnacle of the metalcore genre. If theres no such thing as a perfect album.. why'd you give it a 5 out of 5. That is perfect. 5 possible stars, you gave all 5. Perfection. Scott seems to be the only one that takes these ratings seriously. 5's are thrown out way too easily on here. chad... unearth = metalcore This fits into metalcore. Breakdown metal? You made up another new catagory? This is close enough to poison the well, everytime I die, hopesfall, and FATA to be metalcore in my book. I called them metalcore because of the hardcore breakdowns and vocals along with metal riffs. ive never considered these guys metalcore but they are still one of my favorite bands. i just dont see a comparison to like poison the well or from autumn to ashes. i just call them breakdown metal. I don't think 5 stars equals perfect, just excellent. There's no such thing as a perfect album. Some bands have come close though. Hey FortyMinutesWest, if it's not perfect, don't give it 5 stars. I haven't heard this, but the EP was really good. their last ep was pretty good. unearth will eat your fetus Fuck yeah. Unearth will kill you. unearth is amazing. thats all that needs to be said. I never said it was perfect, just that it's the best metalcore release in recent memory. this album is by no means perfect. i mean, not even close. don't get me wrong, it's amazing .. but no way is it up there with those who came before. unearth has added nothing, and prides on it. |
