Okay, I'm not going to beat around the bush on this review. Here's the story, plain and simple: Somerset will be your new favorite band.

The band, made up of four kids from the Minneapolis area, contains Claudio, drummer of the much-maligned and underappreciated Flipsyde. Right away this earns major points in my book, as Claudio's drumming [and back up singing] was impeccable both when I saw Flipsyde live and on their CD. So before I even popped this in, I knew from a drumming standpoint I'd be more than satisfied.

What I didn't know was just how satisfied I'd be with the rest of the band, too. The band's sound would be one of the borderline emo/punk style that is more or less sweeping the nation nowadays. But where most bands popping up in your hometown sound stale and repetitive, Somerset breaks through the mold with catchy hooks, excellent dual guitars, and amazing lyrics. A sampling from my favorite track on the EP, "Colors Of Insomnia:"

"Rape me and my conviction / sedate me more and more / so I can't see their shores
Take what you were not given / from those you could not scare / World police for peace or global conquest?"
Their sound might be along the lines of so many other late 90s emo/post-hardcore bands, their lyrics are obviously not just about girls and heartbreak. These guys know their shit.

They're also just amazing songwriters for this early on in their career. "The Victim: Animated" is a solid 4 minute adventure through hook after powerful hook. You get powerful lead vocals from singer Forrest, a yelled "One Two Three Four One Two Three Four," you get time changes from 4/4 into 6/8, you get a ridiculously cool guitar outro [best enjoyed with a good pair of headphones] - it's really the best of what the emo-punk scene can offer right now.

Now of course the band isn't perfect. I mean, this is their debut EP, how good could just these 5 short songs be? Well, let me tell you - this isn't greatness, but I'm almost shocked at how damn close it comes. The vocal harmonies are what most bands would kill for, the musicianship displayed by all four of these youngsters is what makes other bands' jaws drop, and the overall groove of the group is second to none. Look for big, big things in the future from Somerset - the word on the street is many a label [both major and indie] are scouting them out. This is one of those bands you'll see those guys on absolutepunk.net be raving about in a few months [but don't hold that against them].

The elevator is on the ground floor, and I'm holding the door open for you. All you need to do is step inside and trust me. Once those doors shut, you're going to be in for the ride of your life with this band.

    My Score:

Can we please all grow up for a minute, and sprout some pubic hair. I don't care if you like the guys from New Zealand or not, this is not that band. They are fantastic musicians and if you've seen them live, they play with a passion that most bands can't even comprehend. I respect your opinions of the other band, but if you want to judge these four hardworking guys for making music, try listening to the full album. Sure, not all people like the same music, but if you don't like it, please keep it to yourself. Thanks guys. Somerset rocks.

wow! this band is amazing! of course if you like dull, un-original boring re-hashed tunes. I would now like to qoute the people I agree with "these guys are trendy-core pansy asses" AMEN! and "This song is nothing special. It's tolerable, but it's definitely run of the mill, leaving me with no desire to further pursue this band. Preach to me brother! Dear god people, the only band by the name "Sommerset" worth listening to are from Auckland New Zealand, get a clue and downlaod the tracks available from http://www.sommerset.co.nz/

these guys are trendy-core pansy asses. what the hell does anyone see in them, honestly. right down to the slightly-out-of-focus-picture-of-a-woman/inanimate-object-in-past el-and-calming-tones cover art. puss rock at its finest. this is the kind of cd youd see your middle school little sister listening too while touching her newly devloping breasts in delight when she daydreams about the lead singer. and since WHEN does this type of horse manure fall under *punk.* theres not one thing punk about it. fucking. sad.

My score is for this one song. Pretty infectious, especially with the time signature changes. Defenitely nothing groundbreaking, but it follows the formula that my favorite bands of the last 5 years have laid down. Hey, not everybody can be totally original. If they could, we wouldnt be able to appreciate the true groundbreaking bands as much. So don't hate just because one band has a similar sound to another, especially if they do it with near-flawless execution like these guys.

interesting story about the girl on the cover...

we are really good friends with the son of the owner of csa images... they did the weezer maladroit cover, the paramount pictures logo, and the little "choir" clip art on bad religion's "process of belief," among other projects...

the girl is made out of plastic, and belongs to the same "plastock" series that weezer's maladroit cover is in.

    plug: csaimages.com... hehe...

we were incredibley thrilled when he said we could use one of his images. i think it's pretty attractive, and it works on a few levels with the title of the ep.

no way! but that's really hillarious to hear that someone would do that.

frankly, the whole "emo" thing is a joke. it's really sad to see kids take a once respectable genre and turn it into a fad "lifestyle" almost... some people get it and some people don't. whatever...

"cheer up, emo kid"... "what's wrong? you're lookin pretty emo today"...

what the fuck is that??? grrrr... like, there's such a thing as an "emo kid" now? ya know? all that shit that sucks...

but, whatever... nothing anyone can do about it except wait til the "fad" dies and the people that are true to the MUSIC stay.

    hey,

this is claudio, from somerset (minneapolis). i finally got ahold of some mp3s from sommerset, from new zealand. they are really good!

honestly, when we thought of the name, we had no intentions of stepping on anyone's toes, and it's a little unfortunate to now always have this comparison/competition with them...

i think comparing the two bands is like comparing apples to oranges.

i would never try to pit refused (one of my favorite bands) against the dismemberment plan (another favorite band).

anyway, i hope everyone doesn't automatically dismiss us because of our name... hehe...

and thank you, scott, for the review!
