Okay, I'm not going to beat around the bush on this review. Here's the story, plain and simple: Somerset will be your new favorite band. "Rape me and my conviction / sedate me more and more / so I can't see their shoresTheir sound might be along the lines of so many other late 90s emo/post-hardcore bands, their lyrics are obviously not just about girls and heartbreak. These guys know their shit. They're also just amazing songwriters for this early on in their career. "The Victim: Animated" is a solid 4 minute adventure through hook after powerful hook. You get powerful lead vocals from singer Forrest, a yelled "One Two Three Four One Two Three Four," you get time changes from 4/4 into 6/8, you get a ridiculously cool guitar outro [best enjoyed with a good pair of headphones] - it's really the best of what the emo-punk scene can offer right now. Now of course the band isn't perfect. I mean, this is their debut EP, how good could just these 5 short songs be? Well, let me tell you - this isn't greatness, but I'm almost shocked at how damn close it comes. The vocal harmonies are what most bands would kill for, the musicianship displayed by all four of these youngsters is what makes other bands' jaws drop, and the overall groove of the group is second to none. Look for big, big things in the future from Somerset - the word on the street is many a label [both major and indie] are scouting them out. This is one of those bands you'll see those guys on absolutepunk.net be raving about in a few months [but don't hold that against them]. The elevator is on the ground floor, and I'm holding the door open for you. All you need to do is step inside and trust me. Once those doors shut, you're going to be in for the ride of your life with this band. MP3 The Victim: Animated Please login or register to post comments. wow hey Scott you should sign these guys to PNR. being from minneapolis and knowing some of the guys from somerset, i was willing to give a good review the first time i heard the album (whether it was good or not) but last year hearing this awesome band play and sing their lungs and hearts out, i wasn't just gunna give them a review on them, I LOVE THIS CD!! (forest if you read this, tell Soren Anna says hi) i love somerset. not only are they a promising band, but their personalities and kindness are phenomenol. a couple times now we've gone out to eat at perkins with them and they rock. im from the minneapolis area and anyone from there knows these guys. hey, i just saw somerset at summerfest in milwaukee and they really kicked ass...i like em and will prolly be following them to see how they do later...idk about sommerset nz cuz i've never heard em, but this somerset rocks! only a 1 cause the site won't let me give em a negative number. New fav band? what a joke. Flipsyde was a great band and one of my fav bands. Somerset destroyed an awesome band!!!RIP Flipsyde i actually don't think i can take people adding -core onto the end of anything they want. ive seen somerset many times now That track- "the victim: animated" is awesome... and I trust that their other shit is good too. Stefan from Sommerset New Zealand here. May i just say that the OG Sommerset from Sweden kicks ass. Can we please all grow up for a minute, and sprout some pubic hair. I don't care if you like the guys from New Zealand or not, this is not that band. They are fantastic musicians and if you've seen them live, they play with a passion that most bands can't even comprehend. I respect your opinions of the other band, but if you want to judge these four hardworking guys for making music, try listening to the full album. Sure, not all people like the same music, but if you don't like it, please keep it to yourself. Thanks guys. Somerset rocks. "This guy's right, I listen to it while touching my middle school sister's breasts." Holy crap it is my favorite CD ever, and i have to say Forrest is amazing like an ape that just shaved his whole body of hair. Its really good. The site you guys want is www.sommerset.co.nz go and check out the kiwi boys, there's heaps of Mp3's etc... they're currently touring Europe, so if that's where you're hanging, keep an eye out. Yeah haven't heard this somerset the only true Sommerset is the band from NZ plugging away in Europe right now, go and see them, they are the most amazing live band I have ever seen and I've seen heaps, there albums are good too wow! this band is amazing! of course if you like dull, un-original boring re-hashed tunes. I would now like to qoute the people I agree with "these guys are trendy-core pansy asses" AMEN! and "This song is nothing special. It's tolerable, but it's definitely run of the mill, leaving me with no desire to further pursue this band. Preach to me brother! Dear god people, the only band by the name "Sommerset" worth listening to are from Auckland New Zealand, get a clue and downlaod the tracks available from http://www.sommerset.co.nz/ This guy's right, I listen to it while touching my middle school sister's breasts. these guys are trendy-core pansy asses. what the hell does anyone see in them, honestly. right down to the slightly-out-of-focus-picture-of-a-woman/inanimate-object-in-past el-and-calming-tones cover art. puss rock at its finest. this is the kind of cd youd see your middle school little sister listening too while touching her newly devloping breasts in delight when she daydreams about the lead singer. and since WHEN does this type of horse manure fall under *punk.* theres not one thing punk about it. fucking. sad. Jooooooooooooonnnnn!!! true dat homeslice fuzzy - that band is summersett. the whole heartcore thing was pretty whack, but the band was mad good. the singer is starting something new with a friend of mine on bass, it sounds promising. I don't think I can take one more trend-core band being described as revolutionary or different. I absolutely love the mp3 posted. I'm going to get that cd. My score is for this one song. Pretty infectious, especially with the time signature changes. Defenitely nothing groundbreaking, but it follows the formula that my favorite bands of the last 5 years have laid down. Hey, not everybody can be totally original. If they could, we wouldnt be able to appreciate the true groundbreaking bands as much. So don't hate just because one band has a similar sound to another, especially if they do it with near-flawless execution like these guys. I have no clue what the person below me just said. ramo - that girl on the cover is such a tease. "Hah, how did I know Scott did this review?" New Zealand Sommerset = good shit. ok you guys, get the facts straight! THIS IS THE SOMERSET FROM MINNESOTA IN THE US! stop commenting if you've realized that its NOT the somerset in NZ, ok? I'm sorry but really, is it all necessary? "Oh I thought this was the other sommerset, they kick ass!" well, sorry, it wasn't. People get a clue! Somerset in MN is the best and I can vouch for it! Seeing them live is the way to go! fuzzy - Is this the band that wanted to be called "heartcore" because emo was too immature? it always makes me laugh when someone can't spell masturbate correctly. especially during an insult like that. Geez, if you're going to try and insult me, at least try to spell words correctly. i bet scott likes to masterbate to the girl on the cover Wait a minute..this is my new favorite band? But the Hives just told me that they were my favorite band. Now I'm so confused. What will I do! This score is for Refused and The Dismemberment Plan. He's not kidding...I fucking love this song (The Victim: Animated)! My ears are happy, now it's time to go to class so I can debate about the war and get all pissed off again. hey, song is good. but i agree they are not my new favorite band. but i will give it sometime after i burn this song and burn their cd from a friend. Here's to a long and successful career in the music industry! This score is for N.Z. Sommerset, they rule. I agree with the rest of the crowd...NZ somerset is great.I've seen them live a couple of times. Yeah, I would also advise everyone to check out Sommerset from NZ, they really sound like Lifetime`s back ... and they fucking rock! Best CD in a long while ... I came here expecting a Somerset review on the New Zealand band. No dice... Hah, how did I know Scott did this review? Well, this band is far from terrible, but they're not great either. My new favorite band? Nope. there is a band called somerset from new zealand and they sound like good old LIFETIME... love them! this new band is ok... |
