Boy Sets Fire has been one of my top five favorite bands for some time now. "The Day The Sun Went Out" and "After the Eulogy" are two of my favorite albums of all time. The latter propelled BSF onto Wind-Up, home of everyone's favorite christian cock rockers, Creed. I tried not to let that get to me though, I was happy to see that this bunch of hard working guys get the recognition they so sorely deserved.

So how does a band follow up "After the Eulogy"? It's certainly not an easy task, and unfortunately, on this disk Boy Sets Fire couldn't measure up to the mark they set with their previous work. Something is missing here. The over-production of this album has robbed Boy Sets Fire of their most prized asset: their passion. That's not to say that these songs aren't passionate, but it just isn't conveyed to the listener the same way as it was with their older material. The soaring dual vocal harmonies seem almost uncomfortable and everything has a clean and sterile feel about it. Instead of hearing this and feeling that Nate was singing to you, it sounds mass produced.

There is also a noticeable lack of stand out tracks on here. There are a some good songs(Eviction Article and Bathory's Sainthood come to mind) but generally, everything sounds fairly average. However, this CD did feature the first Boy Sets Fire song that I can honestly I say I can't stand, "Handful of Redemption". This sugary, over-produced, generic song is so sweet that I felt the need to brush my teeth about sixty times after listening to it.

This isn't what I'd call a bad CD, but this is Boy Sets Fire, and they can do much better than this. Perhaps I'm just disappointed because I had such high expectations for this album. Peope have already called this nu-metal, which just isn't true. This is mainly a rock record with some hardcore sensibilities thrown in here and there for good measure. If you're a fan of this band, you've probably already bought this and passed your own judgement, if not you should atleast pick it up for the live DVD. If you're looking to check these guys out, pick up just about any of their older releases before you get this.

What happened to Boy Sets Fire?

Anonymous (April 20, 2003)

i had no idea waht kind of label wind up was. so i go to their site... first band on the drop down menu: creed. haha.

is evanesence(?) that christian band. that was on a christian label. and made it onto the christian charts. and was like, " we don't belong here " or osmething?

One, Boy Sets Fire definitely spawned Thrice, not the other way around. Two, this album is terribly over-produced. Three, "save your wishes for the sky as a perfect fuel that won't ingite." what the fuck. if there's one lyric on this disc that rubs me the wrong way its that one.

AdamSocial (April 19, 2003)

Heh, a few songs remind me of Staind. That sucks.

RaNcIdPuNx (April 19, 2003)

I myself miss wussemorock he was pretty funny. But now time for a real review. This CD is great and there is no doubt about it. It starts out with a badass song that makes you wanna hit everything in your room(in a good way)
The CD ends the same way. This band is alot like thrice but im gonna have to go with thrice over this band.

I love Handful of Redemption.

The hype behind this release sure as hell died fast...

it is pretty awful though

travis (April 17, 2003)

my guess: wuss has a regular name now. Wuss was just a joke - he made that clear a couple of times.

So my guess is this: Find someone that is new, someone who started posting right after Wuss left, and there you find the truew identity of wussemorock.

Oh, and this album is OK. nice review.

Anonymous (April 16, 2003)

Wuss may be kind of stupid, but he's very entertaining. he should come back.

Anonymous (April 16, 2003)

where has wuss been? You make a good point.

Anonymous (April 16, 2003)

Uh, this album is pretty good. Last guy, Thrice is amazing, both live and on record ... What are you, some kind of jerk or something?

Anonymous (April 16, 2003)

rancidpunk has no friends and compliments himself. Oh and I like rancid but I think you are ruining it for me.. I might be uncapable of liking them now that you've proven that you are a total fucking idiot. oh and Thrice is fucking horrible..

Anonymous (April 16, 2003)

RaNcId PuNx IS A GENIUS!

Anonymous (April 16, 2003)

I'm starting to think **WussEmoRock** is the same as this RancidPunx kid....

Thrice is like these but a whole lot better so go buy a thrice CD and you wont regret it. So if you have money to buy a CD go buy a Thrice CD or a RANCID CD NOW! For a low price of $17.99
So enjoy your new CD. Have a nice day.
AFI is good too. You might wanna get that new AFI CD if your out also cause i think that it is a great CD worth listening to so go buy it along with rancid and thrice and have an even better day. Thank you for your time.

Ive had this cd for a couple weeks and I still cant get into it. This mellow semi-melodic stuff just isnt doing it for me. I saw them live last week and theyd play stuff off of previous albums and the energy was real good. Then theyd play some of the new stuff and it was just totally out of character, no energy. Although Release the Dogs is a pretty good song, the new stuff as a whole is not impressive.

Oh and nathan gray stopped the set bc he couldnt hear himself very good, in mid song. It was an older song too. Theyve been playing these songs for how many years? Rockstar anyone?

They use "Handful of Redemption" on Tiger Woods 2003.

This is not hardcore, nor is this Boy Sets Fire. This is total trash, and deserves to be right up there with Suicide Machines' S/T cd for "Records totally out of character for a band".

In other news, I'm going to go make myself a sandwich.

Anonymous (April 15, 2003)

Why do bands that speak out against big business and capitalism sign with labels that put out MP3s of the band with beeps in it so you're forced to buy the CD AND put a label on the back of the CD stating they don't support the political views of the band? An effort to the label to (gasp) make money? The 'bread and butter' of BSF is strong songs with strong political views and this label gives two shits. Why oh why would they sign with Wind-up?

The CD is OK but certainly the worst they've ever put out. I've been playing it while driving and whatever and some songs are great and some are down right horrible.

Anonymous (April 15, 2003)

yeah? well I thought they both sucked balls.

Anonymous (April 15, 2003)

i really like handful of redemption...i liked the live version better though

Anonymous (April 15, 2003)

"Handful of Redemption" is a horrible song. It might be about the triviality of Christianity and all, but hearing the chorus of "A handful of redemption's all we need, redemption's all we need, etc., etc.," makes me cringe every time... And I think it takes away from what is a good album otherwise.

waste_elite (April 15, 2003)

it was a good review

god forbid he be honest

Anonymous (April 15, 2003)

I think this review was MUCH better than the last. This review isn't trying to kiss so much ass that the actual fact that this album is horrible gets hidden.

FortyMinutesWest (April 15, 2003)

"My review of this was better."

I admire your modesty. I wasn't trying to put down the band, as I said early in review, they're still one of my favorites. I don't care that they're on Wind-Up, but it's certainly worth mentioning.

FortyMinutesWest (April 15, 2003)

"forty, you lack the ability to listen to an album for what it is. you bring in all these outside grudges and your personal tastes and write completely unfair and biased reviews - that's not how it's supposed to be done. be mature and learn to ignore anything you know about the band when writing a review, or whatever anyone else is saying about them. jeez"

That's bullshit and you know it. If anything, I'm biased towards this band. Of course I'm going to take their previous work into consideration. Who's personal tastes am I supposed to take into consideration when I write? Yours? Tell me how this review was unfair? Or any of my other reviews for that matter?

Anonymous (April 15, 2003)

To two below:

This CD may not be up to their older work, but it's just plain silly to infer that BSF "has nothing to say, anymore." That's gotta be one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

evilash (April 15, 2003)

Wow this cd is bad. the first song has like a smashing pumpkins geek usa guitar groove to it and since this is boy sets fire that is lame.

Anonymous (April 15, 2003)

Good review. This CD is total and complete crap instead buy "this crying, this screaming, my voice is being born" or thier "consider" 7". These guys used to have something to say now it is all generic feelings sung to appeal to the masses. This band should also quit pretending to be or to promote DIY.

Anonymous (April 15, 2003)

My review of this was better.

Listen to the music, goddamnit, not the production, or the fact that they're on Wind-Up. Get over the fact that they actually had money to work with.

"Handful Of Redemption" is a great song, but you might've missed that while brushing your teeth and thinking up lame (but "witty"!) put-down comments.

punky (April 15, 2003)

When someone writes a review, it has to be biased, because HE or SHE is writing it. Their taste, their words, their score.
Good review.
