Published on April 18th 2003 Choke is a blaspheming band. Their label's website describes them as 'the best punk band in Canada right now.' Well, I'll clear that one up right now - not only are Choke far from what you and I would call 'punk' candidates, but they are also not even close to being the best in -any- genre. Their music is stale, sappy, and boring - most of the songs on this album sound like they were thrown away from 1999's "Foreward," while the rest barely make a lasting impression on the listener, if anything at all other than an upchuck reflex. These Canadian smartasses may not be new to the scene (this being their 3rd full album and 5th overall), but they sure do sound like it - their sound is immature, undeveloped, and worse off - just plain irritating. They sound more like a 4th-rate Get Up Kids than the revolutionaries they're labeled to be, but that's not even the worst part. They wear their influences like they were old Gap jeans from the Salvation Army, and they didn't even wash the mud stains their mentors left behind. It's a good thing Choke don't have a real record deal - it'd be a huge waste of money to even promote these assholes. Keep these guys in Canada where they belong - along with Celine Dion. This album isn't their best though, Foreword and Slow Fade are defintly better than this one. So extensive that you know how to use capitals, right? if i talked like the kid below me, i would kill myself. or better yet, i would let the entire world stone me to death. but no, since i do have a pretty extensive knowledge of the english language, that won't happen. sorry. Just see the energy they put up in their shows to understand why they are called "the best punk band in Canada right now". Choke doesn't play three chord indie songs, they do have a record deal because they "ARE" worth supporting. Also Choke are far from Assholes. I don’t know where you get your sources from but I have talked to the boys on more than many occasions and they are by far some of the nicest guys I have talked to in a band. And to add to that, this band can not be compared to a band like The Get Up Kids. You have obviously only heard of like three bands and you should definitely stop talking out of your ass. Choke is a technical band that plays great music and has gained a great deal of respect from fans all over Canada and yes even the United States. They have come a long way since their first release "Give 'er" to develop an original sound that suits the band style perfectly. The new album is amazing. The music is very intricate and is something different than their previous albums. I actually just went to see these guys play 6 days ago and they rocked. The crowd was insane for them as they should be and they had everyone singing along and having a great time. To anyone who thinks this band is a bunch of "blaspheming", "stale", "boring", "immature", "undeveloped", "irritating" or anything else like that: Pull your head out of your ass and actually listen to the cd. I'm sorry Soulbleed, this cd might not be as good as N*Sync buy they are way more talented and cooler than you or any of your gay assed bands will ever be. hey tim, go fuck yourself asshole!!! The Blood Brothers/Used thing was an example of someone comparing a band to another band that is popular to bring the lesser known band down. Choke is far from 3 chord indie rock. Their use of jazz scales,tempo shifts, odd time signatures,and unusual riffs makes them complex. Just because this CD is slower than their previous stuff doesn't make it bad. damn kids now i have to write a choke review so i can talk about what the album sounds like.. not just cheap shots because they dont sound like a "punk" band. they arn't punk, though they have some elements. oh well here it goes.... 'choke is one of the most complex bands right now' .. i never knew playing 3 chord indie rock was complex. :) you're an idiot. i didn't like this record because it's the musical equivalent of shit. it had nothing to do with the fact that they're canadian - the fact that they're canadian is the reason they don't have a real distribution deal in the US (which i said was a good thing, for this is one album we really don't need leaking around here, especially in our very creative scenes). secondly, don't say this is a 'bad review' just because you like the band - say something and back it up, like for example 'why' one should disagree with me. and anyhow, it's not like i don't know anything about this band or the genre, i've been following both for years. everything i said about this album was something i have enough experience and privilege to say, but that doesn't go far with very many of you. it's not my fault this band lost all it's talent in between the 3 years it took for this record to surface. check out their last album instead of this one if you really wanna be anal I am CANADIAN and the only reason why the reviewer didn't like this album is because it's from Canada.
