 Published on April 25th 2003 If you judge this EP by the first moments of seemingly standard “emo” in the intro of “Compromise of 1984”, you would be way off, because this band doesn’t stick to that style, or any style for that matter, throughout the record. You will continue on and hear Thursday-like screams and keyboards, and yes, so far all the elements still seem fairly typical of bands of the genre. But there is something else with these guys, and at first it is hard to put a finger on it. The band is six young rockers from Michigan, and they try hard to switch things up within the disc. Throughout the tracks you get laid back “indie” moments, lymph-node-forming hardcore, and melodic choruses. The band put a bunch of energy into all the different elements, managing to pull it all together, even within single songs. When you’re listening, one moment you’re screaming nonsense syllables along to a harder section, and then all of a sudden you are tapping your foot, singing a catchy chorus, and you wonder how you got there. A particularly catchy track is “Vacation to Hell” one of my favorites. It has a quiet introduction containing simple guitars, harmonized vocals and piano along with an underlying synth part, but quickly bursts into a chorus that will have you singing the Alkaline-esque “I’m taking down these pictures of you on my wall / these scars still bleed / and I’m letting them drip on our past.” Then the next song “The Lover and the Liar” shows their eclectic nature, when after that last catchy tune, this one starts with drum hits and bass, which grows into lots more screaming. But even this one has a cheesy section full of piano along with pop-punk style skips in the music. It’s cheesy, but good cheesy. The trick is that these sections are sparse, making them more effective. The screaming, which could also grate on one’s patience after a while, is also done tastefully and at appropriately times. There is a raw sound to this EP, which for the most part, does not hurt the overall effect. The sound quality isn’t really what’s lacking here, it’s more of issues with tightness and some tempo fluctuations; however I think it gives the CD character, and this disc probably sounds more like their live show than with most bands. These guys can obviously play, so perhaps the sloppy moments are just a result of rushed studio time or budget issues. Unless you are accustomed only to ultra tight pro-tooled production, this should not be a problem for you. However, the band should watch out for these moments in the future.
The Chiodos Brothers are all 20 years old or younger, and what they are doing is already good stuff. This EP is very diverse in styles and pulled off well, they just have a few tightness issues and even those may work themselves out with a better recording. I will look forward to their future efforts.

Chiodos is the best band that i have ever heard and met and FUCK all of you faggets who say other wise Chiodos is a sweet band. fuck all you faggots that dont know what your talking about. niggers they friken rock! their very good for there age they all have great talent... i would recomend there cd... dont listen to all the bad revews they are a great band The Chiodos Bros. Rock There CD Rocks I Have Seen Them Live And Their Lyrics Are Good And Their Sound. I Would Strongly Recomend This Band To Any Rock/Pop/Punk Music Lover... All In All This Band Rocks!!! This band sucks. They give Flint a bad name. My band is opening up for these guys on the 24th and 25th of October in Manchester New Jersey, and Mount Holly New Jersey. Check it out kids. i think this review is very well done.. also, this band rocks.. i had the priviledge to meet and chill with this band in up at nmu, and they are all awesome down to earth guys.. like to have a little fun and love to make music..both of these shine through in every one of their performances and will keep you on the edge of your seat.. i would totally recommend them to anyone looking for great music, and a great time.... I think that this review has good info about the band, and that it is nice when a reviewer (like this one) actually takes the time to learn a little something more about a band, instead of just making stuff up or doing a half-ass job.... If only some of the other reviews on this site were as intelligent and well-thought-out as this review. Man everything on this label blows a load I checked out the Choados Brothers and Greyfield and didn't like either of the pop punk fags. Man, lots of uppities on this board. Greg your review was fine in my book :) it's cool, i didn't get a press copy of the cd because mike knew that i already had the disc, as well as the greyfield disc... the bio on the earshot site is the same that is on the chiodos site. yeah sorry, I didnt get the bio when i got the CD. I didnt think to go to earshot, but i went to the band's site and the label and didn't find much. Chiodos Bros, get some more info on your site! Yeah anyone interested more on them, go to that earshot site below. Sorry. Um these CDs normally come with bios from the band's publicist (*cough*www.earshotmedia.com*cough*). On top of that, what's wrong with researching a band when reviewing them? That's what I do when I write reviews for my publications, and I'm sure that's what this fine reviewer did when reviewing this CD. Plus, I work for the band's label and judging by all of the out of state mail orders and their coverage in external publications, your claim that nobody has ever heard of these guys lacks credibility. I'm sorry for telling you there were 6 of them, they are all 20 or younger, and from Michigan. Too many facts... and they were really useless, I apologize! By the way, I am not in the band, nor had I ever heard or seen them before I got this CD to review. Horrible, horrible material. Sounds like someone from the band reviewed their own cd. Who else would know nonsense facts about a band nobody has ever heard of? I live in Michigan. This band is the equivelant of audio cancer. Avoid at all costs. Theyre working on putting togethor a tour this summer so if you can pull any strings with booking, get them to play in your town. www.thechiodosbros.com They are from Flint and play at the Flint Local 432 all the time. They arent my style, but they put on one of the most energetic and entertaining shows you will ever see. c-ya please enlighten us as to which city in michigan these guys are from. The movie, not some band that I'm sure had/has the name. if you want a flint band that rocks hard listen to the hot flashez. if you want a michigan band that rocks hard, listen to Small Brown Bike. You could be right... I think we'll have to consult Scott on this one, he is the real vocalist 'round here... Maybe it would have been more correct for me to say "lymph-node-inflamming-hardcore". Heh. Anyhoo...you get the idea: it hurts your throat. uhhh, doesn't everyone already have lymph nodes? This band played at my high school for some "poetry jam." I didn't go. |
