Street Dogs - State of Grace

What could possibly be the biggest rags-to-riches success story in the coming months might very well be the biography of one Motion City Soundtrack. Starting from humble beginnings in Minneapolis, and clawing and scraping their name into the respectability column of so many scenester's minds, the band's vision is finally realized with this, the album they've always wanted.

What's that, you say? The band already released this album last year by themselves? Well, you're correct, but this album has almost a completely different feel. For starters, the packaging is 100% different [but still just as creative, with a gorgeous layout including transparency paper].

As for the music itself, the songs have received a fresh coat of paint in the form of re-recorded bass parts as well as some bells and whistles here and there [most notably the addition of a tambourine in "Mary Without Sound"]. The whole album has been beefed up a bit production-wise by Ed Rose once again, so each song shines even more than it did before.

Now for those of you who were smart enough to buy the self-released version of the album [and haven't sold it on eBay yet], you might wonder why you should drop another 12 bucks to pick up what you may believe is the same disc. Well, for starters, the band removed "1000 Paper Cranes" from the tracklisting and added 4 different songs in it's place. Since you can read about what I thought about the original album here, I'll spend the majority of the review focusing on these new songs.

  • Perfect Teeth - this is sort of a "The Future Freaks Me Out" part two, with nostalgic lyrics coupled with an insanely catchy vocal line delivered by lead singer Justin [whose voice has gotten way better since he recorded the original batch of songs a year or so ago]. Super catchy, thumbs up.
  • Modern Chemistry - Clocking in at barely 2 minutes, the song seems almost like an afterthought; the music is rather repetitive, but on subsequent listens, the lyrics really grow on you. The buildup of the last chorus is rather powerful, too, and it's hard not to play air drums along with it. Oh yeah, and you can't go wrong with falsetto "Oohs" ever. Ever.
  • Capital H - This received my first "You gotta be kidding me!" award in recent times, as the song has been recorded a record third time for three separate releases [Their self-titled EP and their split CD with Schatzi both had different recordings of the song]. MCS decided to once again record what used to be my favorite song by them, and by this point it's had a lot of it's life sucked out of it. I'll always be the scenester and say the first version was the best, but that's just me. Basically, this is one of the band's catchiest songs they've ever written, and it is a smart addition to the album overall, considering this will be most peoples' first taste of MCS.
  • Autographs & Apologies - this song has been a live favorite in the band's set for the past few tours, and it showcases the group's darker side of their MOOG-pop. If it's a taste of things to come for the quintet, then I want to eat the whole thing.

When I first reviewed this album last December, I enjoyed it a lot but wasn't in love with it for reasons I couldn't place my finger on. With the re-release sounding so much sharper and crisper, plus the addition of 4 more tracks which all get a thumbs up, the album has inched up on my scale. This could very well be the quintessential summer CD for your car stereo, along with Spitalfield's "Remember Right Now." Check it out.

Usually I don't like softer pop-punk/emo or whatever the hell the kids are calling it these days. But I love this album. I can't stop listening to it. I love the mog/keyboards. It's nice to see that there is actually some talent left on Epitaph.

Oh man I love this CD. I can't stop listening to it. I got the original in January and I've probably listened to both that and the re-release a total of 300 times all the way through, at least. I'm not even kidding. Definitely my favorite of 2003.

I own they're first album and really enjoyed it, but this re-release is amazing.First off the new songs add a little shine to the CD. The Spiffy cover is really fun to stare at when bored (not that I know), and the overall clean up of all the songs that were on the previous album just rock. WOO and YAY

This is a super awesome album. It is probably the best album released on epitaph this year. You will have no regrets when you buy this cd. It is full of origional sound and super rad lyrics. And plus the keyboardest (jesse) is super nice and so cool!!!

Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, July 19, 2003 at 12:31 AM (EDT)
    My Score:

Its a little rock...its a little roll...and its a lot of keyboard magic. If you love the sound of a well oiled moog machine then "I am the Movie" is one of those cds that will retain a perminant position in your cd changer. Although the keyboard is an important instrument throughout the album it is not the driving force...its slick integration with the drums, bass, and guitar as well as strong vocals gives the album that "special" touch. From start to end MCS brings you a different danceable tune...you will never ask yourself "didn't I already hear this song?" because every song is distinct with its own degree of pure rock. I listen to a lot of artists who use keyboards and many fall on the other side of that line...you know the one...the "just a little too poppy to listen to everyday" line. MCS keeps a good distance from that line and its a good thing. I don't know if this review convinced any of you to buy the album, but hopefully it will convince you to download some songs. Then if you like them...go out and buy the cd and support MCS because they deserve it. Check out their live shows too...cause I promise they will "rock u stupid." With that I say: rock is good, rock is loud, rock is MCS.

Desert City Soundtrack would lose a court battle for the "City Soundtrack" name in a heartbeat. MCS pre-dates DCS by a few years. They also have a huge record label behind them now, so they can squash DCS and the band "Motion Soundtrack". Go read "Everything You Need to Know About the Music Industry".

i really like this cd, but its not as great as everyone makes it out to be. i do agree with one thing AP said about it. before i ever read their 'low profile' article, i would describe them as the midway point between jimmy eat world and the all american rejects. with some piebald thrown in for good measure. if u like those 3 bands, or moog driven power pop in general, u will like it. the lyrics can sometimes be a little to dorky. boombox generation is a horrible song. modern chemistry isnt so good either. the future freaks me out is fantastic. motley crue references in songs are great. i'd say its a 7/10 but it'll probably grow on me to be an 8

I remember when Scott was first raving about this band before their signing, and with MCS I saw a lot of what I liked, but I was never drawn too far in. Come a couple of weeks ago, and I find myself watching this group opening for the Weakerthans. Now with this album's re-release and a few listens to those old mp3s, this band sounds SO good. I am fully hooked this time around, and I wish I was on the ball with picking up this album months ago in its original form. However, there is no time like the present and there is now nothing stopping me from picking this album up tomorrow. And God, will it be goooood.

"maybe the reviewer overdosed and died before completion."
the album was completed well after Ward's death. But a noble effort at a joke... Noble? what am i talking about, that was fucking tasteless.
I checked out the mp3s and video for this band. Eh. I can see why people like this band. I guess i'm just not feeling it. But i give them my best wishes on all their musical endevors...

And the video, lest see, they have The Mars Volta look down for the singer, Nerf Herder bass player (or was it guitar? oh well i mean the bald guy), get up kids look for keyboards, and punky McPunk on drums. If only they got that last guy to wear some checkered suspenders and silly hat they'd be a scenester shmorgusborg!
Oh well it's the music that matters anyway. enjoy the music. But i'm afraid the video "gets my lowest rating ever... 7 thumbs up"
