HoodsPray For Death (2003)Victory Records Reviewer Rating: Contributed by: FortyMinutesWest (others by this writer | submit your own) Published on June 27th 2003 Every label has that one band, the one that always seems to be in the background, the one that is always stuck in the middle of comps, the one that never seems to get the same attention as their labelmates, and The Hoods are that band on Victory. That has always baffled me, while I personally have never liked this band all that much, they are basically textbook Victory. Back in the mid-nineties when mosh metal seemed to be at its peak, no one seemed to notice this band, and Victory didn’t seem to push them. Now, with Victory focusing on “emo pop”, you can bet that this band will probably remain relegated to a footnote in the label’s future plans This album actually surprised me, mainly because I expected to hate it with all my heart. But try as I might, I really couldn’t. The Hoods play tough guy hardcore, you know, heavy breakdowns, growly vocals, the occasional metal riff, the whole nine yards. But considering that most other bands doing this style are just plain bad, The Hoods manage to escape my wrath (nothing like grading on a curve, eh?). While nothing on this album really stands out for being amazingly revolutionary or different, I couldn’t help but nod my head at times. The lyrics are pretty bad, and the fact that Victory had the audacity to compare Mike Hood to Nate Gray is pretty hilarious. I wasn’t expecting poetry when I opened the CD booklet, but when I read lines like “drama makes me step, everyday it gets worse, my stomach twists in fear when the shit starts to turn, a friend pulls a knife and starts to attack, I’d take their life if I could get you back” I can’t help but cringe. All the bases are covered here: hopelessness, friends stabbing you in the back, getting jumped, hating people, being lied to, and hating people. In all fairness, the band does sometimes try to be a little bit positive. The song “By My Side” is about reclaiming your life after years of being down. If you’re a fan of heavy hitting bands like Hatebreed, Until the End, and Bury Your Dead (although this band mixes it up a little more than these others), you’ll probably dig this album. Bands like this should forever be in debt to Shattered Realm. Why is that? Because thanks to Shattered Realm I can always say “Hey, I don’t really like this, but at least they’re better than Shattered Realm!” Please login or register to post comments. Hey Hoods fans. Thanks for making our scene shit. I'm a 916 kid with a soft spot for hardcore, but these guys blow. Killing the Dream kicks their asses. bitches grab your gym shorts and puch a girl and get ready for the same cd thats been made thousands of times by these shitty tough guy hardcore assholes
"This cd would be the soundtrack to me beating the reviewers ass. 916 mothafucka." Glad to see that someone knows what they're talking about. I listen to hardcore. I wouldnt call this hardcore, I would call this generic crap. Old Strife, Snapcase, By the Grace of God...THATS hardcore. You're too core for me, I wouldn't stand a chance. Unless I stabbed you in the back! This cd would be the soundtrack to me beating the reviewers ass. 916 mothafucka. i just want to add that i dont think liking or disliking the hoods cd should determine how you feel about someone, i personally like to think there is more to my identity than the top 10 bands i like. i think people should not take someone not being into something as a direct insult to them as a fan, when i say i dont like something im not usually even insulting the band, i dont expect bands to tailor there sound to my liking, and id rather see a band play something true to themselves instead playing the new buzz in "core" of that week even if im not really into what they are playing. Im gonna have to agree with whoever said just because you dont like toughguy hardcore you are a pussy emo kid/fag. I would say my love for any tough guy stuff stopped with hatebreed. And i just find hoods boring. I see so much more going on in a band like throwdowns music even though i dont really dig that. I just like a little more diversity in my music, maybe even something a little more extreme. And i personally cant like a band just cause the singer does alot for the scene, I personally cant judge what i like musically based on a persons merit. alot I think what turns me off of tough guy stuff is the lyrics, i just cant relate to alot of the stuff. Its mostly stuff about bustin heads or some brotherhood crap, I dont go out looking to fight people and i have friends but so does everyone its not the focal point of my life. Welcome to the school of mosh! hahahah i'm not calling people vegan faggarios, im just quoting one life crew. settle down there tough guy. Vegan Faggario? What does being vegan have to do with being a homosexual? Not that anything is wrong with either. I know plenty of vegans who could knock your ass out. ONE LIFE CREW IN THE MUTHAFUCKIN HOUSE. BEST VICTORY BAND EVER. How did you know? My next review is Garth Brooks live! If you don't listen to hardcore, don't review it. All I get from this review is that you don't know shit about what your talking about, or what the band is about. Stick to gay ass pseudo-intellectual techie-cock-riding music. Are you gonna start reviewing country music next? How bout hip hop...g to the izz-ay. Well this isn't "pro-tooled screaming" hardcore. But Black Flag does kill it. But then again, Black Flag kills most things. I'd hate to sound like an old man (I'm not), but in honesty, Black Flag would have destroyed any of these pussy bands. Now that's hardcore, not this "I'm tough I have shitty sounding protooled screams." Add a bunch of Indecision bands like Unbroken, Count Me Out, Automatic, and Kill the Messenger(anyone know if that band is still around?) to the list as well. Eh, I'd rather listen to American Nightmare(I'll keep calling them that), Bane, Ten Yard Fight, Sick of it All and a whole host of other bands before this. I dont like meatal,I am not a tough guy if you guys wanna hear real hardcore download something from stand against or 10-yard fight I give it another year, but hopefully it dies before that. and i used really twice in the same sentence. oh well. calling it "pop with screaming" really emphasizes how out of place the screaming really is... i hope this trend dies I wouldn't even classify the new Victory stuff as pop punk. More like pop with screaming. Weak. "Tough Guy" hardcore isn't hardcore, because acting like a "tough guy" is usually just facade put up to cover insecurities and self doubt. These "hardcore" guys flexing their egos and never their minds. Hardcore is about anger, but not brainless anger. Tough-guy metal-tinged hardcore has been done to death, but so has Victory's new craze of pop-punk (people call it emo, but it's not. it's pop-punk. ask Heroin if it's emo, asshole. ask fucking guy picciotto). Nothing says hardcore like posturing on the internet. But anywya, I like hardcore, but this just wasn't very good, that's my opinion. You're free to like it if you want to, but not everyone who doesn't like tough guy hardcore listens to "emo" or whatever that garbage Victory is putting out now is classified as. nOT BAD or good reallY ok at Best. Many better HC BaNds Have come Outta Nor cal If you give a bad review you should be bright enough to know that mike will stay up all night posting anonymous good reviews of course if an emo kid with dirty diapers listens to a hardcore album he won't like it. i don't have dirty diapers and i don't like Rufio or whatever. victory is going to shit. the hoods are one of the few remaining good bands on the label. emo kids are selfish they just bitch and moan about their problems and shit they don't like. eat some brass knuckles and write a song about the plastic surgery that you had to undergoe inorder to repair your pretty little face. that would be something to cry about. first off, i listen to hardcore. i just think its a pity that the majority of the great bands of the genre have died, and that we are now left with this... the fact that the band doesnt pretend to be doing anything inspirational or even intelligent doesn't mean that they are worth liking or even listening to. No, see, I know what "Real" hardcore is. Two words: Nerve. Agents. really, it comes down to this, most of the kids commenting are norcal kids (i.e., hoods local crowd) and you don't know what this band, and especially mike hood does for our scene (runs a venue, puts out records, etc.) and how much pride we put behind this band.it may not be your thing, but really, blasting a record that isn't even the kind of music you'd usually listen to is rediculous (just like me trying to spell that word). we're just sick of all the "hydrahead","intelligent", post-everything bands getting all the credit, when no hardcore kid that's even worth the air he breathes would be caught dead listening to that ferret style (or whatever-the-fick) bullshit.fuck all the art metal, the tech guitar and the off-key emo singing that's been done to the point of sickness. hoods are survivers of a generation that's mostly faded away. respect that. what they are doing may not be ground breaking, but they're not pretending that it is, in turn the audience respects that nothing's being pulled over them. it's very upfront, no bullshit, and that's why it's worth appreciating. You guys are hilarious. all you emo losers can fucking cry me a river and eat a dick. hoods are a fucking awesome and have done more for hardcore than most of that shitty tech/metal/psuedo/emo/hardcore/power pop horseshit you losers call hardcore nowadays. it seems that most fucking kids have forgot what hardcore truly is, and you can never capture that in some review or discussing it in your coffee houses. to people who are fucking blind and dont like this album, suicide is highly recommended. these guys can suck on my dick. victory has released some great hardcore, but this seems like a fucking pathetic attempt to pacify the hardcore kids (loyal, longtime fans)while consistently shitting out album after album of uninspired flavor of the month filth. The hoods fucking rule at life...once again 2003!. pieces of shit. I have emo contact lenses actually. dude, take off your emo glasses and take a better look at this record. get a fucking life. the hoods just keep sucking more and more. metal riffs? haha nice try, these guys are as generic as it gets. This is more metal than hardcore. Damn, way to get someone who doesn't like hardcore to review a hardcore record. The hoods kick ass, nuff said. You're just mad because you don't look good in a scarf, it's ok. oh yeah i almost forgot my favorite band is jimmy eat world and alkaline trio and poison the well.... theyre hella hardcore...and i shop at hot topic all day long What about Snapcase? Or aren't they core enough for you? i dont like hoods, or tough guy hardcore because my girlfriend doesnt like them, i wear a sweater, and a scarf, and have a girls haircut and wear my little sisters tight girly pants, i like emo, i like to be sad and let everyone know it and write about in my diary. i eat dick because i suck The Hoods are the only hardcore band on Victory. You little girls forgot what Victory once was. And no, it wasn't "amazing technical metal hardcore with hydra head growling and passionate singing." im going to start a movement called "pray for the death of whiny emo pop punk and evrybody who listens to it." die emo fags and shove the black hair dye up your pansy asses. this is a great record. victory has gone to the dogs though. The Hoods are a terrible band. The only reason they got a deal with Victory at all is because they had friends in other bands on Victory, and Tony didn't have the sac to say no to them after he tried to aviod the issue for nearly 2 years. That's your ticket everyone, bother Tony enough and you're likely to get a contract if you don't seem to go away. My score is for the review. Im gonna start a movement in music called "death to tough guy hardcore" subtitled "can i have some of your testosterone cause i must be low" | Features
