Published on June 27th 2003 Rival Schools was supposed to play this show and they didn't. Thursday's set was cut short due to Geoff's recent bout with exhaustion. And it still kicked major ass. The venue was the New Brookland Tavern in Columbia, SC. A small place with a bar, a stage, and a relatively small floor. This is not a venue you'd expect to see Thursday play, as they have sold out shows five times this size before. We arrived a bit late, so i only got to catch three songs of Murder By Death. From the band's name, i was expecting a pretty hardcore sound. But this band reminded me of Cursive more than anything else; they had a female bassist playing a large sit-down bass violin, the music was aggrivated and lyrics came second to the sounds. It was a tumultuous few songs, with the last two having only the singer scream into the microphone off and on. However, they managed to make this sound work; not as impressive as Cursive, but very good energy. Definetly worth checking out. Next up was This Day Forward, who were promoting their newly-released album "In Response." I'd heard "In Response" before and it caught me as being pretty good, and these guys sure know how to put on a show. They were having some serious guitar problems, but still managed to get the crowd going pretty good. This is always an impressive feat for bands who don't have a huge fanbase within the crowd. If you're in to Thursday or Time in Malta, I recommend you check these guys out. And finally, the headliners. Thursday came out to some funky disco type music, where Geoff was doing the robot. He introduced the band and they tore into the brand new "For the Workforce, Drowning." Now, for naysayers who think Thursday's best are behind them now that they're on a major, they are only getting better. This song and the other new song they played (which I didn't catch the title of) were absolutely stellar. Heavier, louder, more melodic, more screaming...than anything else they have ever played. The crowd response was amazing to "...Drowning." Next they went straight to fan-favorite "Paris in Flames." Their stage presence was amazing, as they took up the entire stage with the six of them. Geoff constantly leaned into the crowd to allow sing-alongs, but he still guarded the mic more than bands like Taking Back Sunday. Paris in Flames was followed by (in close to this order); Jet Black New Year, Understanding (In A Car Crash), New Song #2, Standing on the Edge of Summer, Cross out the Eyes, Autobiography of a Nation. And that was it. The set was only 8 songs long, which was the biggest disappointment as it was a killer show. However multiple times Geoff had to take a break to lean over and simply breathe, and after Cross out the Eyes he ran offstage to the fresh air outside. It was extremely hot in the club, and he came back and said that he has been in and out of the hospital lately but they wanted to do the tour just to have fun (hence the reason for the small venue.)
I'd imagine this will be one of the last times Thursday will play a small-sized venue like this and the only let downs were the fact Rival Schools wasn't there and the short set. Each band put on an incredible show and the crowd was amazing (except for some 200 pound kid that tried to crowdsurf). I'll give this show 4.5 stars for that. I apologize a thousand times over for making my insignificant post come up twice. I wasn't actually at the show so I can't say how good it was, but I'd just like to say that I don't get why Murder by Death is so great. This Day Forward is good for what they do and I absolutely love Thursday but, what's the big deal with MBD? I bought a split CD they did with Volta Do Mar, (who, by the way, blows all these bands away. Except maybe Thursday. I really like Thursday.),and I wanted to like the songs because I very much enjoy the sound of a cello. While the music wasn't horrible it was a little...tepid. Nothing grabbed me. And the vocals were bad. I don't if it was just this split or what, but the singer was so flat and boring. As a whole I just don't get why they rock so hard. Thank-you. I caught this show last night with the (unnecessary) addition of Every Time I Die. its a cello, and they rocked. "you guys are both morons - little joe gould almost burned down the el torreon in kansas city when they played here. the keyboard player spit fire and he spit it right towards the gas line almost killing all in attendance. national fire theory headlined the show and i ended up having sex with sara that night. rad. Thursday was the something. They seemed energetic with a touch of lemon freshness that usually accompanies Pinesol. It was going good until some New Odometer Fixing Xtreme "punkers" saw my shirt which read:"Punks don't use the internet. NOFX made a webpage." Needless to say, those 13 year-olds banded together and tried to follow me. It's too bad that they had to stop to try and smoke a doobie, though, they might have caught me. The rest of it went without a hitch. The music would have been good, but hmmm....I'll put it this way: it would somehow manage to make Cap'n Crunch soggy. I hereby proclaim this show: This Thursday Forward by Death. May any who disagree find original words to express themselves. Kersplat. Thursday is a good band, but if you vut sets short you should just take a break until he is healthy again and can do a whole set because that would be a disapointment. murder by death is also a really good band and its a bummer rical schools werent there i was the last comment those pictures are so good. i was going to try and make it to this show but ended up not being able to. i'm sad i missed it. i would have been upset about rival schools though. I love Thursday. What a great, great band I think they are. Amazing lyrics, they continue to evolve musically and while Geoff doesn't have the greatest singing, he is getting better on each track. if thursday played longer sets than the one they played in memphis, the kids in the crowd would pass out and die from exhaustion and heat. dude i saw thursday play at the efactory in philly and they played every song on 'full collapse.' they also played 'jet black new year' and 4 or 5 songs from 'waiting...' it was the best show ever. my only beef with thursday shows is they ALWAYS play short sets. hey i know a sara that plays cello are you from PA? war all the time kinda has a lot of meanings, but i'm interpreting it directly...because it really seems that way. it is a fucking cello. they have a bassist (male) who plays a regular bass. then they have keyboards, guit/vocals, drums and cello. yo. ignorant reviews anger me. (score for review) Thursday is Ok, they are not nearly as good as everyone seems to think they are. oh yeah and is it just me or does geoff look like the singer for Big D and the Kids Table i think thursday is trying to play smaller venues. they said that on thier next tour they would play several small venues in a town instead of one big one. I'm assuming that Murder By Death is named after this shitty movie: i hope geoffs usin some of that rogaine stuff. If he isn't, he won't have anything left to pull down over the bald part in a short time. yeah... sara plays a cello... and she's damn good at it. the new thursday is no jet black new year, but it does keep my interest, so nice selection of a single. A taste without giving away the whole thing. I have to say in all the major label signings to the point of a punk rock evacuation to the majors, a bailing ship, Thursday's record is the only one I think might be a good listen. I've seen MBD live and it IS a cello, not a double bass. Great pics. Id like to see someone try to play a double bass between their legs and sitting down.That would be one flexible lady!That instrument that u play plucked or bowed and sitting down is a cello or could be a small electric upright bass but as he described it as looking like a violin i assume its a cello. na the guy from anti flag used to get sick evry show and tell people not to smoke. dork Geoff has to hold the award for the music industry's weakest immune system. Tell the fellow to eat some liver. outstanding pictures, i'm going to try to make it to one of these shows next week...to see thursday in a small venue would be incredible "murder by death? what's next? cucumbers for life?" murder by death? what's next? cucumbers for life? make yourselves clear, silly bands. and i laughed at the thought of a 200 lb kid crowdsurfing. lolcore.
