Alkaline Trio is one of the few bands I consider "Pop/Punk", that I also find enjoyable. What mostly sets these guys apart from the afore mentioned genre is their much darker, emo-esque lyrics.

This album is a compilation of the out of print 7 inches, 'For Your Lungs Only', 'I Lied My Face', and 'Sundials. Also four extra tracks from various compilations are thrown into the mix. It's pretty much what any oldskool Alk3 fan could ask for.

The first track Goodbye Forever starts with a catchy riff and pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the album.

'This Is Getting over You' is the first song on the album where Dan takes over on lead vocals. Dan really shines on this track with a nice bass line towards the end of the song.

'Bleeder' is one of my favorite Alkaline Trio tracks of all time. Nice emotional song with an amazing climax and ending.

'I Lied My Face Off' I've never heard such an angry song from Alkaline Trio. Dan takes over vocals again and you can feel more emotion in his vocals than ever.

'My Friend Peter' Sad, depressing lyrics. But also has a very cheery, happy type feel. Contains my favorite line of theirs, "...And I'll drink 23 more to whipe this stupid smile off my fucking face". Great song.

Snake Oil Tankers The shortest track on the album. Very catchy chorus.

Southern Rock This song was also released on their debut album, Goddamnit. Didn't really like it too much on that album and my feelings remain the same here. Lyrically, it's not too bad though.

Cooking Wine One of the best songs on this compilation. I love how all three guys chime in during the chorus.

For Your Lungs Only My least favorite track here. I'm not sure why. It just doesn't clique with me.

Exploding Boy My personal favorite on the album. It's a cover of a Cure song. And it definitely has that Cure feel to it. Instrumentally, it's the best Alkaline Trio song I have ever heard.

Sun Dials Has a very fast feel to it. Slows down at the end of each chorus, only to pick up with the fast riff again. It's not a bad a song. Just doesn't really leave much of an impression on you.

Nose Over Tail Great song. Great writing. Especially love the part where the instruments drop out and Matt says "I'd love to rub your back...". One of the best on the album.

'97 This song has many layers to it. Great sybolism used. The perfect way to close out the album.

If you were a fan of the first two Alkaline Trio albums, then chances are you'll really dig this one. These Chicago natives really know how to make their music.

"To the guys that said Green Day is not punk, do some fucking research. Green Day has more punk cred than Alkaline Trio, they played for and were applauded by the Ramones for fucks sake. Joe Strummer loved em. They got in the punk scene through Jesse Michaels himself and have been kicking ass ever since. Go fuck yourself you ignorant fuck."

Ramones can suck my ballz then.. Joe Strummer too.

PMAtill_ImDOA (February 23, 2009)

agony and irony... your thoughts?

Smithy (October 29, 2006)

Fuck, they're punk. Just leave it at that.

Godfather (September 26, 2005)

I am in love with these guys...Matt Skiba and Dan Andriano's voices go so well together and the great thing is that you don't need liner notes to know what the lyrics are. I could write 5 pages on why these guys kick ass, but I am lazy and don't feel like it.

Foaming_97 (March 5, 2005)

If alkaline trio is pop-punk then my dick is a popsicle

usedalkali (December 14, 2004)

look this is a kick ass album and these guys arent fuckin pop/punk alright they are pure rock, emo at that. These guys kick ass and i hope they dont sell out like AFI.

Crookedsuperhero (May 23, 2004)

I'm sorry, but 'This is getting over you' is a joke. It's the worst song the've ever wrote and it's the only song I ever skip on 'I lied my face of' and the S/T. It's awful, christ i hate it. But the rest is great.

Rolling Stone knows fuck all about music because in a recent article on the Trio, they said that this new album was their best. Did they even listen to any of the other albums? Christ... the new album, while better than stuff like the Starting Line couldn't touch the old stuff with a ten foot pole. (not the band)

I think half of it's sarcasm, buddy.

must we classify music?

FortyMinutesWest (July 21, 2003)

Fuck you all, they're blue grass.

pop punk smauk smunk....good music is good music.

Anonymous (July 20, 2003)

A3 isn't pop punk. What pop punk band new or old do they resemble in any meaningful way? It sounds nothing like the Ramones-style bands or the NFG style bands. It's melodic but that doesn't make it pop punk. 5 years ago everyone said they were emo or emo-punk. Now they're pop punk. They have always been a punk rock band with their older stuff (like this CD) having a late 90s emo influence.

Anonymous (July 20, 2003)

i love how the bastards on here type.

Katie4213 (July 20, 2003)

arguably their best almub. (although it is a collection, it really speaks for the trio)

dignin (July 18, 2003)

Im not saying green day isn't punk, but having joey ramone and joe strummer like them doesn't make them punk.

Anonymous (July 18, 2003)

This is pretty much punk rock.

themuffingirl (July 18, 2003)

nah, greenday and all that is mainstream....... alk3 is not 'punk' but they aren't mainstream dribble.

i say this because i feel that the term 'punk' does not adequately describe this genre.

Anonymous (July 18, 2003)

This is a great cd and I don't understand why it wasn't reviewed earlier. I guess they put it up now so all the alk 3 cd's are reviewed.I don't think they are pop punk either.I don't why people can't just call things punk anymore or just music...

bluetunehead (July 16, 2003)

exploding boy is a B-side. it's not that readily available.

Anonymous (July 16, 2003)

i've never read a review and actually thought it was BAD...but this one is really bad. poorly written, doesn't do or say anything entertaining. and my god, "emo-esque"???? i knew at the end of the first paragraph.

Anonymous (July 16, 2003)

Does anyone know what Cure album Exploding Boy is on? I have been searching forever but came up short every time.

Anonymous (July 16, 2003)

It was also a CDEP.

Anonymous (July 16, 2003)

"I Lied My Face off wasn't a 7", it was a 12"...Jesus I wish I had it..."

You should have ordered it from Asian Man when it was released, mine actually came signed by the band.

There are actually a few silly/grammatical/non-sensical lines in my earlier comment. I tend to type quicker than my mind processes, followed by a quick hit of the Submit button. Here I go again! [SUBMIT.]

thriceequalsgod (July 15, 2003)

i like this form of review... oh yeah the alkaline trio is good, but the last album wasn't

Anonymous (July 15, 2003)

Yeah Yeah!

Hate, Jesus

Anonymous (July 15, 2003)

After reading this review, I sit back and wonder, why are there still so, so many things I still don't know about this album?

Anonymous (July 15, 2003)

Anyone ever see them play "this is getting over you" live? I saw it once about 5 or 6 years ago. What's up with that?

Anonymous (July 15, 2003)

This is one of my fav. records ever(along with GD). It's 100x more raw and "passionate" than the last 2 CDs. I miss this A3. They haven't written any songs like '97 since then.

inagreendase (July 15, 2003)

i could've sworn this was reviewed already...whatever. i think it would've been funnier had the commenter said 'one of my favourite 90s punk bands of all time' rather than w/o one of. its kinda funny tho i guess

funkisdead (July 15, 2003)

this cd fucking rocks. alkaline trio are cool as shit.

Anonymous (July 15, 2003)

"my favourite 90s punk band of all time"
Anyone else find this funny?
-kevin11

lieutenant (July 15, 2003)

Next to Jawbreaker, the Alkaline Trio are my favourite 90s punk band of all time. But what really boggles my mind when I listen to their music is that I realize just how far away the 90s were. That decade feels a hundred years away from me, but we're only in the year 2003. Just when you think about it... Goddamnit was released in 1998. Maybe I'll Catch Fire hit in '99, with this release in 2000. Though yes, 2000 is within the decade I have been talking about, can you even remember that year? Can you believe it was only three years ago that this album was released by quasi-unknown Alkaline Trio on Asian Man Records, while Screech was still a cast member of Saved By The Bell? Jesus Christ, that time of my life WAS a hundred years ago.

Anonymous (July 15, 2003)

The way you wrote this review, it sounds like you read the "Maybe I'll Catch Fire" review. It sounds really similiar. Did you get inspired to write this after reading that or something?

Anonymous (July 15, 2003)

"i love the trio, but exploding boy is the worst song they've ever recorded..."

well, it IS a cover afterall.

This is an amazing CD. I give it a 10! HORRAY!

Anonymous (July 15, 2003)

song-by-song reviews just suck.

thebouncingsoul (July 15, 2003)

i love the trio, but exploding boy is the worst song they've ever recorded...

Anonymous (July 15, 2003)

Booo. The lyrics are all Richard Hell rip offs and the music, you can find elsewhere.
