Tribute records are an uphill battle from the first track. Purists of the band receiving the honors will scrutinize every note of every cover, looking for ways to dismantle popular opinion of groups involved. Fans of the bands covering the tributed group will look towards their guitar-slinging heroes to hopefully open their eyes to a band that, by all respects, should be heard by as many people as possible. Many a high-profile tribute has been released in recent years, with records being dedicated to the Pixies, Weezer, Green Day, the Clash, and more. Unarguably, all those bands are incredibly important in the overall scheme of music, and this CD's honoree, Jawbreaker, definitely deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as those rock luminaries. Remember hearing that Æffect's cover before and liking it but when I went to check out their albums, they blow hard. Pretty good for a tribute album. Although I can't see what you all love about the AEffect's cover of Boxcar. I thought it was pretty obnoxious...but that's just me. Jawbreaker is my favorite band, but every band on this totaly ruined all their songs, who ever decided to have a bunch of bad mall punk bands on this is a fucking moron. The only decent song is by duvall. This is an terible representation of Jawbreaker. For Amusement Only's cover of Shield My Eyes is my pick of the litter. even adam from jawbreaker likes it wow... i suck. i thought boxcar was originaly by the ataris.... fuck me.. lagwagon's cover of want is really good. i love jawbreaker. i'm sure that more-well-known bands neither had the time or interest to work with such a small and relatively unknown label. i'm also sure that alot of well-known bands are not even jawbreaker fans, and that would be hipocritical to do a cover. I personally liked Kill Your Idols on here. Bracket has been in the studio for a good 3 months so the new album shouldn't be much longer...I don't understand all the Bracket bashing. They are one of the most original bands on Fat and come on guys, there are much less talented bands out there (*ahem* Somerset, Spitalfield, or whatever Scott's emo band of the moment is) Well done to all involved! bracket have a new album coming? most bands i like break up. good news. god i love the aeffect, i cant wait for them release something new, oh yeah this jawbreaker band aint half bad either. good call on the omission of alkaline trio or even larry arms. hey scott, make bracket the mp3 of the week. it'll make aubin's pick so much sweeter. sparta song is pretty. They just stretched it out a tiny bit too far. bracket are VERY cool...can't wait for the new album bracket are cool. No "purist" should have to review their Jawbreaker albums before writing a review. They should have been memorized YEARS ago. It's pretty decent. But, I really really fucking hate the Save Your Generation cover. As for Kill Your Idols- Nice catch Blank El-Nino, too bad your ass got saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaacked. Some guy below said KYI butchered their track. I find that hard to believe and I want a second opinion. I picked this up the other day at the Riddlin Kids show, and it has yet to leave my CD player.I love the Nerf Herder track and the AEffect track and the Duvall one,and a pretty much all of the others, but the band who covered "Jet Black".My favorite Jawbreaker song was reduced to almost nothing,it makes me cry. Even though tribute albums are supposed to suck, no one told these guys. There are some amazingly good tracks on here. I disagree with Scott regarding the Sparta song, which I think is incredible - weird, definitely - but true to the spirit of the lyrics of the song. i think if its a jawabreaker tribute, it have to be alkaline trio Isn't Lagwagon's cover of "Want" on this? Its by far the best cover I've ever heard and the best song Jawbreaker ever wrote. Scott you don't even like Ignorance Is Bliss? Come on...that is a classic. i didn't really care for this, although the aeffect cover is really good. the songs aren't terrible, but they add nothing new. i'm probally just biased though seeing how it's my favorite band the f2f song is good, but trevors voice is almost so unblake like it comes off as obviously not the songs original singer. I thought blakes enunciation was always wonderfully vague, so if you read the lyrics you and hear the song again you totally hear the words. I looked all over the last few days at about 8 different record stores, but half of them dont carry it and the other half sold out of it already. I'm hopefully picking it up tomorrow though. Good review. I really like Sparta's "Kiss The Bottle" though. Yes, I know I said I liked a Face To Face song, but I don't think it should count since they didn't write it. |
