Published on August 5th 2003 Warped Tour 2002 seemed like a step in the wrong direction for the long running festival tour. Trying to hard to be extravagant with the off stage activities and not focusing enough on what the fans really come to see. This all changed in 2003. With like 20 less stages, less flash, and better bands. This was the first year I was not accompanied by my brother after 3 years of his Warped companionship. So this year I grabbed up the BostonMusicGal and hit up 93 South to the Brockton Farigrounds. The new site of Warped Tour 2003 in MA, much smaller than Suffolk Downs where it has been held the past 3 summers. Kicked in the Head, local favorites, were the first set of the day for me. Energetic and fun as they always are they sang the same songs I hear everytime I see them. Athough, this time, I must say that they seemed very excited to be playing their one date on this year's Warped Tour. They ran through a fast paced set of songs featuring through songs like "Arizona", "The Witness", "Tidal Wave", and the closer "Lost Cause." After checking out the area and other stages the next set of the day was the Ataris. I have to admit, they are a little bit of a guilty pleasure. I never got too into them and never saw why so many people love them but I think their songs are catchy and fun to listen to even though I wouldnt buy a CD of theirs. The crowd seemed genuinely uninterested in the set though. The lead singer had to stop one of their songs 3 lines in just to remind the people down in front that he had made a specific request for them to circle around the sound tent. The only sign of emotion was when everybody seemed to be able to join together and sing that song they all heard on the radio, "Boys of Summer." They closed their set with "San Dimas High School Football Rules", My personal favorite. Also thrown in their were "Your Boyfriend Still Sucks" and of course "In This Diary" which they oddly dedicated to the Dropkick Murphys.....? Andrew WK, Andrew WK, Andrew WK.... what can I say, the man is a genius. OK maybe genius takes it a little too far but you gotta love him. He is just a a fun loving guy that seems like he genuinely loves what he does and appreciates all the support and love we show him. A smile never left his face from the moment he started with "Ready to Die" until he closed with "I Get Wet". I really could not have been more impressed with his set. I am still ranting and raving about it to this moment. Inviting his whole crew out, as well as a special few people that watched on stage and a few sneaky crowd surfers up on stage for a huge party as he rocked through "Party Hard". I just love AWK and am counting down the days until September 9 (When his new CD hits stores). We snuck a peek at Twizted before Mest came on. They were horrible. That's all you really need to know. Very cheesy white gangsta "I'm tough, die mothafucker die" rap. I'm not quite sure what happened at the end of their set but it seemed like they had just been booed off the stage and the fat guy with the white face paint jumped into the crowd in a bit of a huff. I was too far away to see what actually happened though. Mest's set was a little dissapointing. Not being a huge Mest fan myself I couldn't really get into it too much. I was proud of them for not giving in and playing the songs I was sure I was going to hear, "Whats the Dillyo" and "Cadillac". They played a bunch of songs I kinda knew but couldn't tell you the names. The highlight of their show was when the lead singer dropped his pants and showed us his Simple Plan thong... and soon after that a little more of his middle region that I do not care to think about any more. Pure chaos. That is what happened for the half an hour that followed the Mest set when local heroes the Dropkick Murphys took to the stage and played a rowdy set. As everybody knows, I bleed green and the Dropkick Murphys have my unconditional love. They just played song after song with no banter in between and a lack of the casual ballad like "Forever". Special guests during their set were the guy from Face to Face (name?) on guitar during "Road of the Righteous", Lars, Matt, and Tim from Rancid closing the set with "Skinhead" and a very unexpected appearance of Andrew WK on "Workers Song". You gotta love AWK. The Dropkick Murphys blew everyone away including me. For rows and rows of people it was complete chaos with most pits, circle pits, people just shoving people and people trying as hard as they could to do a little jig with the space that they definitely didn't have. I couldn't handle much more after that exhausting experience. With enough I sat on the grass in front of the Ernie Ball stage waiting for Big D and the Kids Table to come on. They have never seemed more energetic and happy to be playing in their hometown. This was a top notch performance from them, as most are. They played the usuals like "GLD", "Checklist", "LAX", "51", "Myself" and "5 Kids Down" with a few others thrown in there. Impressive set from a great Boston band. I caught a few songs from bands like the Mad Caddies, Suicide Machines, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, but not enough to make a clear judgement on their performance. That completes the Warped Tour 2003 Boston stop. I missed a few bands that I was hoping to see [Less Than Jake, Rancid] but overall it was a great experience. Better than any other Warped Tour in the past 4 years I woud say. Just one last suggestion for next year, let's make a crowd surfing rule: must be under 150 lbs to jump on my head, please.

To the dude who said Saves The Day should be on the next Warped Tour... you won't want to see them after you hear their new album.. it is GARBAGE!! you guys watched the shitty bands at the warped tour...awesome sets by The Red Chord, Nora, Poison The Well, Death Threat the only other cool thing was the figure 8 pit during that last band. Anyone else see glassjaw's peformance? Yeah, they fucking rocked that place. Must see. Looking over my pictures of Rise Against's set in Brockton, I think there were more than 30-40 people there. It definitely WAS early though and they sure were good even though Tim said his vocals were thin. did you people not watch poison the well, not like it or what. i personally enjoyed it quite a bit. well the 284728375 little girls in the crowd kind of killed Brand New's set for me. But yeah, they played wonderfully. No one has mentioned Brand New. They fucking kicked ass, as usual. "I came in as The Starting Line finished, but not a huge loss there. Then I went over to Yellowcard and man, they were great... They played Way Away and they really got the crowd in the mood by dividing the crowd and doing a huge pit. Plus the fiddle player doing a backflip was cool" BostonMusicGuy, Rise Against WAS there. They played at 12:05, so you probably missed them while watching KITH. The crowd for them wasn't very big at all... maybe like 30-40 people. Did anyone go to Pitt? My friends did, and they wanted if anyone caught the set list for... This guy never even saw The Suicide Machine's "Wall of Death". His input does not matter. i think SAVES THE DAY should play next years Warped tour. that would be dope. we need Rocket From teh Crypt too. pennywise live is just the same as pennywise on record Crowd surfing is kinda fun, but what sucks is all the jocks that go to shows and try to turn it into a mosh pit. Fuck those people. i was at Brockton Fairgrounds 2003. checked out The Ataris, Slick Shoes, Suicide Machines, Gimmes, Rancid, Pennywise, and Less Than Jake. By the way, when Less Than Jake was signing in their tent, Chris pulled me from the groupie-gangtas to ask me if my hat was "broken". I was wearing it crooked (very blink 182-ish) and he yanked the hat off and put on very straight (jim lindberg style) just want to give props to less than jake for giving a fuck about my hat. i'll see em in hartford on the 5th. Later guys rise against for the person that mentioned the chanting during Thrice, they were chanting "Lets Go Murphys" because DKM played right after them... In Cleveland, Suicide Machines owned just about everyone.. just with the crazy amount of happiness pouring from the band. The figure-8 was nuts! It worked! I went to the Cleveland show yesterday too, and to follow up with the other few cleveland posts... I came in as The Starting Line finished, but not a huge loss there. Then I went over to Yellowcard and man, they were great... They played Way Away and they really got the crowd in the mood by dividing the crowd and doing a huge pit. Plus the fiddle player doing a backflip was cool SM OWNED cleveland yesterday. Thrice was actually pretty good, although their bassist was sick. SM was great in Cleveland yesterday... first they split the crowd in two and did the Braveheart thing for "Burning in the Aftermath," then got all the kids to full out wall of death charge all the kids waiting for the Ataris on the other stage during DDT. It was fun and funny as hell. Suicide Machines were awesome at my stop in Montana. Instead of having us do a circle pit, they asked to do a triangle pit. It was hilarious.... WAT ABOUT THE SUICIDE MACHINES! they defly had the sickest crowd and they put on such a kick ass set. pretty funny 2 how they had the whole crowd run down to the other main stage and run into the people down there. also pennywise rocked I used to be really into crowd surfing (hence the username) until I realized I'm now 24, making me 10 years older, 2ft taller and 50lbs heavier than the average fan these days. I feel kinda guilty when diving off the stage causes a similar reaction to jumping into the ball pit at Chuck E. Cheese. Head walking is ten times worse than crowd surfing, unless you make a sudden move, then it becomes hilarious. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, and crowd surfing are the 2 shitiest things next to simple plan. Ill just say 1 thing, what the fuck happened to skanking? Fuck just pointlessly running into each other. It was just me and about 5 kids during both Big D and LTJ. God someone help me bring it back, its fun as fuck. Why the fuck isnt anyone seeing simple plan?? !! man i love those guys, seriously you are missing out on some quality music. Shit. Why the fuck isn't anyone seeing glassjaw? !! i don't understand that shit! Umm, The Ataris went on before Kicked in the Head, because I heard them doing their cover of Boys of Summer as I was walking to the fairgrounds, after talking to Ryan Dowd of KITH at Burger King. rise against was one of the first bands to play, so most people missed them I didnt mention Talib Kweli because he wasnt there. Believe me, had he been there I would have been ranting and raving about him the whole review. I didnt check out Atmosphere although I hear I should have and I dont believe Rise Against played either. As for not mentioning Poison the Well, I am not a huge fan of them and anything I would have said about them would have been negative anyway.-BostonMusicGuy Why does everyone have to hate on Twiztid like that? WHOOOOOOOO Was there the big board this year telling all the times and stages for all the bands? seriously, why is no one mentioning talib kweli, atmosphere, or rise against... what the fuck? by the way, that was at the detroit show. me first played a cover of stairway to heaven at our stop. it was the best cover ever, and i hope they release it someday. Without a doubt the 3 best sets of the day were Pepper, Andrew WK and Atmosphere... Pretty solid review ... Here's my points (briefly). I wasn't that impressed by Poison The Well. THeir new CD is decent but I thought there'd be more intensity from their frontman. In my opinion, they're better in the studio. I often diss on AWK but there was no way I couldn't help but smile during his set. Definitely fun, no wonder why that's all he sings about. Thrice disappointed me ... they were definitely been better the past two times I saw them. Maybe because they had to go on after Dropkicks and Rancid? Who knows. What happened to Twiztid was as follows: they were horrible and people were chucking trash at them through their entire set. They kept fighting everything off like champs but someone hit one of their "singers" with a bottle filled with sand and that stepped over the line, causing them to stop their set short. Now, I hate this band as much as the next guy but what's the point of throwing shit? Just boo the hell out of them and be on your way. No need to hurt someone, especially if your bottle doesn't make it to the stage. seriously, no poison the well or thrice?? why the hell did you go then? i really like that "dis-reguard the runnerup" song by Kicked in the Head on the Warped comp. I should pickup a cd of thiers eh? how did you miss Less Than Jake? Amen to the banning of crowd surfing. I ended up with my back to the bands half the day, and watching out for crowd surfers. It's fun, but when you see the same kid land on your head throughout the day... you just end up dropping him after awhile ...by mistake *shifty eyes* Crowd surfing should be banned. stop plugging the picture asshat. it wasn't exhibiting a ridiculous amount of comedic genious in the first place i dont think a single warped tour review has yet to mention poison the well. |
