It's a great mainstream rock album.

Oh, you want to know more? Well, there's not much else to say. Any remainder of the Dashboard Confessional thousands of kids fell in love with - one man, one guitar, one heart pouring out - is pretty much three sheets to the wind by this point. The full band has become what Dashboard Confessional is now, with the solo acoustic tracks becoming more of an afterthought than anything else [as shown by the producton credits].

"The Ghost Of A Good Thing" is tied for the album's worst track [sharing the honors with the cringeworthy "Hey Girl" and the way-too-forced "If You Can't Leave It Be, Might As Well Make It Bleed"] simply because of the terrible vocals in the chorus. The song itself isn't too bad, but Carrabba's multi-layered and terribly falsetto "getting away, away, away, awaaaaay" towards the end of the song is like nails on a chalkboard.

"Hands Down" is by far the album's standout track, being transfigured into a full band number that really rips through it's three minutes like no tomorrow. It's a fun song, and is sure to really break this album wide open in terms of radio and video play [as a side note: I'm predicting this album will sell over 100,000 copies in it's first week of release].

Carrabba's lyrics - while not on pace to win the Mercury Prize any time soon - haven't decreased in potency at all, and what he lost in musical intimacy with the new band he gained in lyrical introspection on a majority of the songs. His voice sounds more solid in general [with the exception of the aforementioned "Ghost"].

The band really tears into "Morning Calls" with a ferocity the group has never seen before, and 6-minute closer "Several Ways To Die Trying" is a sort of sequel to "Ender Will Save Us All," as Chris bellows "I'm dying to live" to close the album.

The pop aspect is stronger than ever, too, in tracks like "Rapid Hope Loss" and the bouncy "As Lovers Go." Both are definite plusses in the band's catalog.

There's virtually no trace of what people seem to call "emo" these days on this disc, but as I said before, this is a great mainstream rock album, and that seems to be what it's going to be. What to expect in the future? Well, to paraphrase from a live review I wrote of Dashboard's last show in Chicago back in October, the music is better but the fans are going to get worse.

Regardless, I'm not ashamed to have this record in my collection. I might never go see him live again, but I'll still sing along in the comfort of my own home. Odds are, most of you will too.

Worth owning.

I really enjoy this CD. I love to listen to it if I'm in the car and not driving. It's so relaxing and it just seems so personified. The comment ahead of mine really struck a good chord with me. Especially when he/she said " I'm just not into this whole "emo" thing I guess." Because he/she wasn't bashing emo or anything like that just simply stating. I believe more people should do that and then actually research EXACTLY what emo is before bashing it.

What is up with this guy? This whole emo thing. I saw him way back in like 98 when he was on tour with No Motiv (which is a fantastic band) but he just sat in a chair and played songs. All of them where in the same key and the same tune. All about the same thing. No one knew who he was, and everyone just stared at him, it was kind of funny. Its good mainstream? Mainstream labels can make anything sound "good". I'm just not into this whole "emo" thing I guess.

I think by chris being in a "band" sort of defeats the purpose of doing something by yourself. granted multiple cds of acoustic songs would get old fast but that's why we don't have bands dedicated to doing this. it's a side project that band members choose to do later in their careers (e.g. matthew pryor). basically, dashboard confessional is making a mockery of good music.

The newest DBC outing takes musical influences from the early thrashing Discharge, and the lyrical intensity of the Germs' Darby Crash, with a little bit of skin and oi! thrown into the mix. Live, nobody can match Chris. He is the new Stiv Bators. This is a must have for fans of REAL punk.

change is a sign of maturity... get your heads out of your asses and accept that this album is decent for what it is trying to be. Fact is, most of these "emo crybabies"(as a few of you so eloquently put it) are true music fans, who appreciate thoughtful lyrics (which i do admit can be found more in DC's older releases than this one) and well written music. Also, there is such a wide range of music crammed into the genre "Emo" that one should wonder what truly is emo, other than something for the naysayers to complain about. Its a tad ironic that the only "whiners" in this chatroom are the ones who HATE emo... (so why are they here , anyway??)

I just got this album today and although I think it is much different from his older stuff it is still great none the less. People use the word "sellout" whenever an artist changes style and sometimes I think it is justified but not in this case. I agree with the comment that the older fans are just upset that he is mainstream now. I think this cd is great if you like DC and if you don't, buy something else.

Worst lyrics ever. Seriously. He doesnt try any new angles on the subject or anything. And no one could fall in and out of love this many times. Unless hes a manwhore. Then that kinda counteracts his whole "gee-golly-gosh, im sucha sweet boy" appearance. And his ski-slope still sucks. I dont consider myself to listen to "hardass" music, but I do consider myself to listen to good music. And this isnt it. Its not that I hate emo kids...its that I hate people who play into the emo stereotype just so everyone knows what they are. Its like a little army. A little crying army that really wants you to see its tears. Fuck that. Fuck this. Go buy a cursive album instead. He at least knows how to write.

I mean, I hate Dashboard Confessional just as much as the next person, but the asshole can write some good songs (but needs to keep his whiny vocals down a bit). This album so far has been very lackluster. Ya, "Hands Down," is a really good song and will get people buying up this CD like crazy and annoy us all on MTV. But the rest of the album fails to capture my attention. Its is pretty bland, straight forward and, for lack of another word, "mainstream." It feels uninspired, but that's just me.

When you think about getting this, put it back. The fourteen year old girl behind you will thank you. The heart is still there, it just doesn't beat as loud as the last album.

No. FSF's song structure is impossible to get into. They feel horrifyingly distant, especially live, and their songs were like "well I want to do this, but he wanted to do that, so we toned down both parts and made the lyrics not really fit the song at all." Their new singer fits their thing a lot better, but they're about as good as every other band on Tooth and Nail (which is, not at all. It's like they forgot about the "Confessional" part of Dashboard Confessional.

Every song on this album feels far less personal. Listening to the new Hands Down vs. the old one really shows this well. All the songs lack that "sing-along" quality that EVERY OTHER DASHBOARD RELEASE HAS. It just never pulls you in.

...I don't think it's the band that killed it, I think Carabba was feeling the pressure to deliver and failed. This comes off more like "Further Seems Forever - Unplugged"...which is bad, in my case, because I can't stand FSF, and I've always felt DC was better.
