AFI was for the longest time, my favorite band, I, like so many other fans have watched them climb from the depths of the virtual underground, to a full blown worldwide sensation. It came as a surprise they were doing an taping for MTV. AFI? An MTV taping? Live at the fucking Hard Rock? Not something AFI fans of yester-year would have thought would become of them. Playing one off show before heading off to Europe, A Fire Inside took the stage at Orlando's Hard Rock for what will become an all new MTV special.

"Anyone here who is a true fan of AFI would be proud of them no matter what they do." Right so no where in this review does he say they sold out. Yes, AFI is more popular now. Yes, they are on MTV. Yes, they gushed about how much they used to love MTV. But the fact remains they used to have some kick ass music. And it is now pretty lame. This review seemed to be more of a critic of the MTV culture, not AFI. Although AFI is (was) part of the MTV culture, no where does he say they sold out. silly people. :) true. its the dudes opinions and such, leave him alone. if you dont like it, close your window or write your own. Its not easy doing a review on something, so shut it. The review was fine. It's just the dude's opinion, let him be. Yeah, he might not know the songs on Sing the Sorrow, but that doesn't make him not a fan. I mean, half the people commenting here have probably never heard Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes. I kind of agree, I think AFI's old stuff was a lot more powerful and the popularity is sort of killing them. But they're still awesome and my favorite band. I just really prefer Black Sails to Sing the Sorrow. And I agree, it sucks that almost everything the played at Hard Rock was Sing the Sorrow, because some people really love the old stuff. But whatever, I'll live. But god, don't call the guy who reviewed this a poser. Cuz he's much less of one than half of you guys. ok well i am an afi fan so im a little biased on all this, but i believe in MY opinion that afi is the best band out there, or at least my favorite. i watched afi on mtv when they were on, and to be honest, i dont see any problem with what they did. and maybe if you were there it would be a different for you becuz you know everything that happened. but the mtv thing isnt all of it. afi has done so much in their years making music. yes they did change their music but its all logically stated why. afi once said that they changed their music becuz they matured and found what they are looking for. my god, they are 28-29 years of age. of course they matured. so of course their music will change. they even said once that their old stuff sucked, yes they did say that ive read it from their quotes. so they did try something new and found what they were looking for. and i sing the sorrow is a masterpiece. You're all fucking morons. Just shut your fucking mouths and either listen to the music, or don't. Sure music is about opinion, but why do all you dumb cunts feel the need to voice yours over and over even when it's the same as everybody else's. I play guitar and I really wanted to be a pro musician, but it seems no matter what you do these days there's still way too many cock knockers out there who think they can do better and that they have the god given right to pass judgement on everybody else. Why, oh fucking why does music have to have so much baggage and bull shit politics with it. I love AFI's old stuff, hate the new...so I don't buy the new album. I don't whine or bitch or moan, I just buy something else. Jesus fucking christ there's a million bands in this world. So AFI aren't a good one any more. All of you twats need to fucking grow up and stop thinking you're intelligent. Here's to your impending deaths. I can't be bothered to make an account, I agree with EVERYTHING the reviewer has said. okay, there's very little i can say about this, but the majority of you are looking way too far into this and need to think before you reply. so, let's address both parties. oo ya one more thing i forgot to say. almost the most important of all.............AFI IS NOT PUNK ANY MORE YOU FUCKING IDIOTS ok . have u ever seen what a cure-bauhaus-joydivision-sisters of mercy-siouxsie and the banshees-misfit-" i left my mohawk and sex pistols mentality behind me"- fab looks like? ya! your right davey havok. and im sure if your familiar with "post punk" """""GOTH"""""""" music, than youll know understand how much these bands can affect you. especially the cure. so, ya, afi apppears that theyve lost themselves in mtv. i would know, cus there is actually still fans from before black sails, believe it or not, but IM SURE davey knows thats what it looks like too. and im sure he cares. but w/e its all about money sometimes. and about the new sts "mall punk" crowd haha. fuck that. were gna have to live with it. and the REAL fans can just sit back and laugh as a group of skater wanna be kids "dance" and shit and put the afi patches on their backpacks right next to the "something corporate" not even knowing what afi is all about. think religious wise. theres no AFI song i dislike, n the fact that ur calling them sellouts is just ur shallow view... when any band desided to defer from our normal expectations of them, is that selling out? ur predetermined views of how the band should act in relation to how they once did is in one word: pathetic. and what makes u more superior to the "trucker hat" fans? may i ask? Dude, FUCK YOU, AFI is the GREATEST band in the fuckin world. At least they have the courage to go out there and sing a style of music thats different, thats the best thing about AFI...they don't follow anyone. Davey's vocals are so extreme and hardcore, it's amazing that someone can sing like that. And don't fuckin EVER insult Jade like that, his hair isn't stupid...it's sexy. In fact, Jade, Davey, Adam, and Hunter are all sexy and extremely talented, so FUCK OFF ASSHOLE! an amazing show.they rock .jade is a kickass guitarist, and davey a fuckin charismatic singer.if they play too well for you then fuck ya You don't have the new album, you passed out during the show, and you still want us to care what you thought about the show? Davey Havok looks less like a guy these days and more like a hot chick. Davey Havok looks less like a fuy these days and more like a hot chick.... fuck, they played the same set when i saw them too; closed with total immortal, came back and played death of seasons and god called in sick today. still a good show though, just sucks to hear that they play it every night, makes a repeated viewing seem not worthwile fuck, they played the same set when i saw them too; closed with total immortal, came back and played death of seasons and god called in sick today. still a good show though, just sucks to hear that they play it every night, makes a repeated viewing seem not worthwile Through our breeding, we are dumb ??? Apparently they dont allow plus signs in your posts. Ok, "AFI's live performance is still great"* "AFI's live performance is still A " Holy god....dont EVER talk about Kotton Mouth kings. EW, what a fucking terrible waste of life band. When are you guys gonna review some kottonmouth kings shit? they're a million times more "punk"(whatever that is) than any of this pop crap on the site. if the arguement can be made to review this because of punk music branching out, then you can get some KMK news up. to the 24 year old "geyser". right on! i remember when i started listening to punk MUSIC. it was the MUSIC that i cared about. does it suck that bands i love are now gracing tiger beat magazine, yes. did i really expect them to work minimum wage jobs all of their lives so that they could always be "my" band, no. it will all fade away again like it did in the mid-90's and then we can all sleep well in the comfort of knowing carson daily won't be throwing "shout outs" to the band we saw, "like four years ago in a basement with three other peolpe". i gotta question. even if there were people in trucker caps, and dickies, does that make them assholes, does that make them like horrible bands,? NO. i don't understand why someone from punknews.com would write such a ridiculous sentence/papragraph/review. You are an idiot, i suppose what you wear is what we are supposed to wear? PUNK ROCK IS NOT A FUCKING UNIFORM! > i just took a dump. It was better than this review. Awe, does your pussy hurt? What a lame review. Do you even mention how the songs were, what notes Davey hit and missed on, how they performed live as a group? You obviously picked up on the fact that every true AFI fan doesn't wear trucker hats though. Congradulations on becoming a retard and a whiney bitch all at the same time Wow, everyone's comments seem to be directed at whether AFI is still cool to like or not now that they're popular. What happened to reviews and appreciation of music? I think if anyone here actually played instruments or ever recorded anything they'd appreciate Sing the Sorrow as a progression from Very Proud of Ya (sacrilege?!) Their live show as far as I've seen is just as amazing as it was years ago. Does the fact that the audience has broadened change the band? I dont talk any shit in real life...I get it all out here! whoever said Joy Division 'started goth' is really stupid. wow, the reviewer is a pretentious twit. GG ALLEN! While I must admit it's funny to read some of the incredibly jaded posts below, in a sense, it's sickening to believe that you people actually walk around and talk your shit in reality... I know what these shows are like, I feel your pain. They're this really stifled corporate atmosphere and the whole time it just feels like you're being watched like a fuckin hawk. The kids who show up to these are ones who only go to shows at HOB and Hard Rock and get all their music through MTV, so they just act in the way they think is natural by pogoing and crowd surfing with the m/ and all that. So all us hepcat scenesters just look at them like the lobotomized apes they are; however we must remember that in any MTV show at HRL, we're the ones going into their element. This seems like a column more than a review, where you vent your frustration that a former favorite band has become popular and the fact you don't like trucker hats(especially when they're worn backwards.) I'm down for some online madden, email me better hope davie didnt find you knocked out in the bathroom hey, who remembers when afi played Velies(?) Planet in springfield, il umpteen million years ago. wow Why is it that none of this guy's reviews are any good? All it is his him bitching about how he's punker than everyone else there and how he knew about them first, therefore he is the better fan. Maybe he should quit writing things just for the reaction and post a decent review for once. "So what's the problem?" "BSD, finish this sentence, Joy Division started Goth, Davey Havok is _____." Anyone here who is a true fan of AFI would be proud of them no matter what they do. This is obviously what they want, and they're happy with it. If this wasn't what they wanted, they wouldn't have got on a major label, and they wouldn't have done music videos, etc. They're not breaking the law. Did you guys ever think that bands might jump to major labels so that they can get their music to the masses? Indie labels simply do not have as many outlets for music as majors do. People from little towns in the USA and the world might be lucky if they have a KMart nearby. Luckily, this major label carries their CD's to KMart. This indie label does not. Also, it can be a matter of recording fees/production. With a major label comes better sound, from better equipment, and a lot of times better producers who know a lot about music...which is obviously why they're paid so well. Major labels aren't the devil or something. My god...were the Rolling Stones on a major label? Yep. Jethro Tull? Yep. So what's the problem? Everyone who thinks that bands need to stay big enough to fit in their back pocket need to get a clue. I'm proud of every band that I've watched come up to major labels...they all worked their asses off by playing tiny, overheated clubs, dirty bars, making basement demos on frickin 4-tracks and whatnot to get there. This is what a lot of bands want and what a lot of bands never get, so I'm proud as hell for AFI and where they are today. Thanks. OOOH! PUSSY AND MADDEN! FUCKING ROCK DUDE! Kevin11, it saddens me to think of all the sperm that perished in that condom on the night of your creation. All that potential...and yours was the one that got through the leak. They died for naught... BSD, finish this sentence, Joy Division started Goth, Davey Havok is _____. "as he had perfected the Ian Curtis, Madonna and Danzig wrapped into one look." Fortyminuteswest's comments are world class. By the way, do you AFI goth pussies get that I say things just to get the reaction I got from you? Hope your black nail polish didn't get on the keyboard. Anyone played the new Madden? Holy shit, Vick is unstoppable! Once we get settled down, I'll call for a punknews.org Online Madden ring. It'll be awesome. P.S. AFI pussies, I was in the Despair Faction before you. I win. Pussy. More importantly Davey needs a makeover. One of his bandmates should call Extreme Makeover and sign him up. The rest of the guys look good. "All i got from the interview.." I saw AFI in Brisbane 2 weeks ago, probably the best night of my life. There was about 80% poser elite kids who were punker than thou with "i've know afi the longest" written all over them. but i dont judge a show by my fellow audience members, or what they are wearing, what the fuck. I dont care for jades haircut, or how davey walks. This was a fashion review, written by a hypocritical DICK-HEAD. "People singing along at a punk show, why I never..." i would love to get up there and do what they do insted of working my 9 to five job they make good money im sure All i got from the interview is that he doesn't like trucker hat wearing mall punks because now the he doesn't look as cool going to the afi show. That's cool that you went to the show despite their new cd being beyond horrible but you knew what you were in for. Sing the Sorrow and the new punk fans that suddenly appeared out of no where. Everyone is so worried about pop punk cramping their style nowadays. Now that pop punk is really popular, people are starting to listen to other punk bands and now they're not cool and underground. People need to realize that it's just a phase and to quit bitching. fun show, super hot, too many lights, not enough old stuff. I was stoked that they played total immortal though. " The only thing that sucked was everybody was singing along. I didn't pay to hear fans participate in a sing-a-long!" I dont care when it came out, Blacksails is art. Sing the sorrow is...um...not. Well, I was at the show and nobody boo'ed when Death of Seasons came on. The only thing that sucked was everybody was singing along. I didn't pay to hear fans participate in a sing-a-long! please!!! stop reviewing this shitty, shitty band. "what year did the black sails album come out? they're touring in support of the new album...not their old stuff!" first off...it wasnt cruise control it was perfect fit. Man this bad went foul. I mean their other stuff was good, but what the hell is up with the cd being full of crap. Also Davey looks scary now. Scary ugly. MINOR THREAT! now there's a band. lets switch topics. DAG NASTY was neither dag nor nasty...discuss. SOYBOMB, why do you have to take the words right out of my mouth? While I must admit it's funny to read some of the incredibly jaded posts below, in a sense, it's sickening to believe that you people actually walk around and talk your shit in reality... To the guy WAY AT THE BOTTOM who commented on tehm having sold out for playing a Clear Channel venue, have you even payed attention to other bands playing CC venues ? Bad Religion,Hot Water Music,Less Than Jake,Recover,Anti Flag,Lucky Boys Confusion,Modest Mouse,Built to Spill,Misfits(the shitty version now),Hey Mercedes,Atreyu,Snapcase,Boy Stes Fire,Allister,Home Grown,Motion City Soundtrack....And so many others. Open your eyes, the monster that is Clear Channel is eating up everything,it's very hard to play a show not influenced by them. I hate their homogenized "musical scene" as much as the next guy,but you just have to grin and bear it.Ok,maybe not grin... I won't dignify many of these "insults" with responses, but the I'll just add that the show was only $7, so it wasn't like I was shelling out $20 or something to see them do an MTV taping. All of you are fucking gay. Seriously, it was his review, he can write whatever he wants. If you don't like it, then eat an asshole. He has a right to feel however he wants about AFI getting better. I remember when I saw the Ataris play here in Indiana in front of 20 people. It was a great show, it was just great to talk to the guys and have fun with them after the show. Of course that won't happen now with 1.2 million screaming girls at their show nows. Seriously, bands just aren't as fun when everyone else listens to them. Now let the bitching start at my comment....... Jesus Christ, man. The "trucker hats" aren't the problem. Narrow minded fucks like you are. Blah blah blah yeah they "sold out" "no they didn't" who cares!!!ANyways I went to see J-Chruch instead and i'm glad I did!Only two or three good songs were played! But i'm starting to hate punk because of people like the ones who post the same shit on this page with words like "sold out" and "not punk anymore" and because of people who listen to all that poppy shit and think that they know anyting about music!! You are all ruining what used to be rock n' roll! So go listen to the Dead Kennedys or Sum 41 and leave everyone else alone! This coming from a 24 year old geyser who listens to music for the actual MUSIC! "punk rock" mtv = sellouts great review. gimmick rock at its worst.AFireInside will fade away soon, and we can all go back listening to Very Proud of Ya. shouldnt be so aggressive? fuck off,if you dont like it you shouldnt be dancing in the pit,get the fuck out and stand at the side. man yall are dumb...(well only the ones saying "oh im not gonna go to the next concert that comes by me if they just play new songs") Thats pretty gay AFI is still an AWESOME band no matter what they play...Davey jade and hunter have so much energy especially Davey he gets the crowd going wild...i attended the show at hard rock that was one of the most amazing shows i have ever seen AFI play granted it might have been better if they played some old stuff like "answer that and stay fashionable" thats a really good album...but i didnt expect them to because its an MTV taping..going into that show i couldnt believe AFI was doing a taping for MTV but when i left...i couldnt have been happier that i was going to get to see that on TV :) all the people saying i cant believe they didnt play stuff from black sails...they actually did play one song...i believe but i couldnt be wrong well all in all that was a fucking great show and i know you ALL are going to watch it on mtv :):) buhbyez Your name here is a badass song. But the best song they got is Malleus Malificarum. If they repeatedly played that song for a hour and then closed with midnight sun, I would be a happy camper. i meant below below, the "this review sucks" one. The guy below me can eat a collective online dick. "Davey should know not to be so aggressive with us." This review sucks. It isn't even a review. This is just an excuse so someone can whine about how they don't like a band now because they're popular. You had to of known the show would be like that. They weren't gonna come out, say fuck mtv, then play stuff off of very proud of ya and other older songs. They were obviously gonna play sing the sorrow and a few off of art of drowning. Try actually reviewing a show for once instead of listing the songs that played and who was in attendence. so do they play nothing pre-Black Sails now? They used to play "wanna get a mohawk" or "highschool football hero" towards the end of their sets.. Even though they didn't play much older stuff, it was still a great show. Total Immortal got the crowd going nuts, it was something serious. One could tell that AFI was giving all they had to show the fans a great show. It was funny they had this one camera that went about crowd level and they kicked this kid out for grabbin their camera into the crowd. The only annoying thing was that the crowd just kept swaying over and over and it was hot as fuck to boot. Overall great show, my only complaints are they could have played some more older songs but I knew they weren't going to especially with MTV there and all. The other complaint would be just more time to play, even though they did fucking rip it up on stage. This was by far one of the most crowded shows I had ever been too, besides warped tour. AFI is getting huge but also there were alot of hardcore fans there all singing the songs even louder than Davey. You all that missed it you will have to watch it on MTV2 but who knows which songs they will pick and how much of the show they will actually broadcast. They definetely left there presence in Orlando. Everyone I heard talking was amazed how good the show was, it was fuckning brilliant. I attended the show and thought that AFI blew up. They played great alot of energy throughout the show. They did play mostly STS and AOD songs but the energy was typical AFI fashion. Davey was going off, the best was when he stood up on the huge MTV logo and just starting going crazy. The venue was tight but it was to fucking crowded. There was so many people there and it did get hot. I didn't pass out in the bathroom like this pussy but still it was pretty grueling. It will be interesting to see what songs get played on the MTV special and which get cut since well at least so far, the tapings are usually on for a 1/2 hour. Davey ain't got shit on Danzig either. I go see AFI if they played all the stuff from "Shut Your Mouth.." and maybe "Your Name Here". My lord some of you people are such FUCKING PUSSIES you are just mad because they are finally getting the respect they deserve after what 10 fucking years your damn right there gona play on MTV They deserve to if more bands like AFI played for that fucked up station then we probably all wouldent hate so much i agree davey has nothing on ian curtis Please do not ever mention Ian Curtis and Davey Havok on the same page. No songs off of Black Sails? Whats the point of seeing AFI if they dont play there good songs? "The same people ragging on AFI for changing are probably the same people ragging on Pennywise for not changing." "Look at Jade's stupid hair" is a funny comment. What did it look like? The last time I saw AFI was in Ventura in October 2001, the same day Dexter Holland cut them off from Nitro...one of the best shows Ive ever seen. the review was all right he never said anything negative directly about afi but not playing black sails is fucked up wat happened to the afi that the fans loved and apreciated? and what the hell are they doing an mtv show for ...god dammit ! just makes me think twice about going to their next show around my place.... The same people ragging on AFI for changing are probably the same people ragging on Pennywise for not changing. I see no problem with the review. When are you so called Punk rockers gonna grow up and stop using childish words like sold out and poser...You people care too much. to be honest, i think it was a good review, he never said "afi sold out" or anything like that, he never even said a negative thing except the stupid haircut, he just presented what he saw, and said "Did AFI want this?" HORRIBLE REVIEW. the reviewer is a fucking idiot. you bitch about no black sails songs right after admitting that you passed out in the bathroom...dumbshit. and why the fuck did everyone start booing at the start of death of seasons? what a shitty town This is the most childish review I've ever read. Grow up, there's more to music than punk politics. Everyone is so pissed!!! oh bullshit, not every band wants to be huge...ever heard of Fugazi? This review is ridiculous. AFI has gotten better and better every time I've seen them lately. I don't recall anyone in AFI claiming to be anarchists. They didn't sell out you fucking moron. AFI soldout, that means you should go find some better music elsewhere, why would you review this shit in the first place? (Yes, I specifically said soldout because they are playing at ClearChannel-owned venues.) Hmm- get over the fact that they are on MTV and becoming successful after paying their due for 10 years... afi are visiting sweden in 10 days and they're gonna play a 400 capacity venue, it will have like 200 people at most there and i hope it will fucking rip, because i really hyped this for myself. oh god. hey mr. reviewer - shut up. honestly. your band is SOOOO MUCH BETTER, right? christ. i hate shit like this. and i'm not even going to waste my time explaining why. They should do more techno songs like death of seasons. Hope you didn't get hurt in the bathroom. |
