The title of The New Trust’s debut CD-EP sure doesn’t lie. These “fast-moving motherfuckers” spit out their thoughts and opinions on religion, politics, death and of course relationships in just under 15 minutes. In a musical style similar to, bassist Josh Staples' other band, The Velvet Teen, The New Trust offers beautiful vocals that soar over, through and under rather raw guitars, drum slapping and the occasional key plunking. Only The New Trust does it about ten times faster than the long, drawn out epics found on a Velvet Teen album. The 6 songs fly by, with the longest being just over three minutes long. They move quickly, but they get their point across. What kind of points you ask? How about their opinion on Jesus?

Fables and fiction, pure superstition,
a fairy tale to waste your days away.

This album really is a soundtrack to the human brain; outbursts of thoughts and ideas on random subjects. And all the messages aren’t hidden behind elaborate metaphors or symbolism. I could almost see this album written during one of those late night conversations you have with friends where all you do is just let words roll right out of your brain. Let everyone know about your greatest fantasies and dreams-

I’ll stand up to the actors who play the part of our masters,
“Action! Now ride off into the distance.”
They ask, “What’s my motivation?”
“How bout your fucking head on a stick?
Now get moving!”

Then someone responds, “That could never happen”. Then, of course, since you are a woman or man of action, you say, “Fuck that, we can do what we want. Let’s form a band and tell everyone what we think and do something instead of rotting here in this basement!” Wait, that's what I want to do. Oh well, its kind of on-topic, because I wanted to say that it’s very easy to put yourself into these songs. They’re easy to relate with and listen to. Which brings me to my only complaint about the album. The quality of the recording is merely ok. The vocals get drowned out every once in a while and some of the back-up vocals are a little weak (check “Crashed Out”… eeek), but considering the band is hand-making these CD’s the recording is not too bad.

Overall, The New Trust looks very promising. They have great lyrics and a nice sound. Although the CD flies by in 15 minutes, it is very enjoyable and well worth the 5-7 bucks. I can’t wait to hear what they can put together on a full length.

Ok, I didn't exactly bother to keep reading all the posts because the figing over what emo is. Define emo on your own..I mean it's not like any of you are right. then again your not wrong ..and im not saying you guys are nto right.. I just think it's pointless to continue trying to define. Oh and another thing im not coming back here so anything you decide to say against me be my guest. later.

Oh and uh, jwinter, your stupid definition of "emo" basically includes 97,436 bands. You are so wrong.

Frickin A!!! What the hell? Im so sorry. I don't know where that came from and why I didn't catch it!! I apologize!! Man, if you even ask me I'd know it's Josh Staples.. but I don't know. I must've been thinking of the football player J.J. Stokes or something because it's listed as J.J. and something triggered. Sorry about that! Could you fix that Scott?

not every "emo" band writes totally about girls. But there are bands that arent emo that do write totally about girls.

Anyway we should hold a giant conference to define emo. Than when people say emo sucks we actually know what they think sucks.

    My Score:

I always thought emo referred to subject matter. And if ya want to get technical, even though you know what I meant, we can narrow it down to romantic relationship? Does that work? Hey, and I'm cool with giving it a definition. Then my review comments wouldn't be full of debates over what "emo" is. :)

Posted by dignin on 2003-09-04 21:33:16
    My Score:

so are you saying that emo has nothing to do with the music itself but the subject matter? And what kind of relationships are you talking about? Because you didnt specify, so if I take the general meaning of relationship, then arguably every song ever written(with lyrics) is about some kind of relationship, therefore everything is emo, so there is no definition.

And I disagree, I think there should be a general definition of emo. Then if somebody posts, "emo sucks" you can actually reply with a statement of youf own disagreeing. Because if everyone has their own thought of what emo is, he could think of emo has the socks hes wearing at the the moment.

    My Score:

Like I said, when a band focuses only on relationships, I consider them emo. Dashboard is emo. He sings about nothing but girls and his hardships with them. I'd say Get Up Kids are emo. Very few of their songs aren't about relationships. Bright Eyes, nope, sings way too much about other stuff. Cursive, same deal. I'd like to say John Mayer is, but I haven't heard enough of his music, what I have heard seems like there are some songs that aren't about women and their wonderland bodies. Thats my take on it. Emo has no definition. It is NOT in the dictionary, and I pray it never will be. Therefore, you make your own definition for it. That is my definition: Emo - when an artist sings about about only relationships. Take it or leave it, I don't care.

    My Score:

"It seems like emo, as of right now, is defined as music focused on relationships"

so by this definition these bands are all emo: john mayer, simple plan, get up kids, cursive, and pedro the lion. This seems like a broad definition, how bout narrowing it. WHAT IS EMO!!! Is atdi emo? Is cursive emo? Is bright eyes emo? Is dashboard emo? Are the get up kids emo? Is HWM emo? Rites of spring? Because if all these bands are emo then there is no definition because the definition would not define shit.

    My Score:

It seems like emo, as of right now, is defined as music focused on relationships. Everything from falling in love to breaking up. Sometimes I enjoy that in my music, because its what I'm feeling, so, in extreme cases, I throw in something like Dashboard. A lot of times I'm not in that mood and will put something else in. Just leave it at that, it's not that complicated.

    My Score:

Sorry, this review is a little outdated.. the new pressing of the EP has 2 new songs.

Quick review of 2 new songs-

"I thought that we were getting together" - Weakest song on the CD and I'm not surprised it didn't make it onto the first pressing. Generic topic and the line "I thought that we were getting together" is repeated way too many times.
"Live Like You Mean It"-Catchy, quick song that mixes well with the other songs. Ending is a little drawn out, but mixes in well with the original 6 songs.

Overall, I stand by my 3.5 stars rating, even with the two new songs. It's really good, but still too short, and actually "I Thought that we were getting together" almost subtracts from the album because it is just plain annoying. I don't think I mentioned this in the original review, but this CD is catchy. For the last month I've had New Trust songs cycling in my head. Quality band and if you get a chance, see them live. Michael Richardson from Benton Falls just shreds on guitar and Josh's vocals are amazing. I sincerely hope that there's a future to this band and that it was not a one-time summer thing.
