Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

My Saves the Day journal

I believe that every band has the right to change and grow. Some people who heard this album prior to release or heard one mp3 have deemed it a change in the wrong direction, and I feel that those people are not giving it an honest chance. So, having had this advance copy of the disc for a month prior to its release, I decided to listen to it often each week, and make a journal entry to see the progression of my opinions and observations from first listen to well-known album. This will hopefully let you all know if you will like it based on previous thoughts of the band’s style and whether it will grow on you. Plus, journals are the in-thing now, right?

Week 1
The first song “Anywhere with You” (the mp3 released) is a big shocker in terms of style. It starts out with chunky grunge guitars and then heads into a verse that is almost disco. But the chorus heads into familiar territory with a sweet melody over lightly distorted indie chords. The rest of the disc seems to tread on that same ground, not as weird as the beginning of the song. I sense a similar sound to tracks off “Stay What You Are” like “Freakish” and “This is Not an Exit,” because like those, the majority of this album’s songs, are a slower tempo, have sustained vocal lines, and an interplay between guitar and bass that allows for more separation between the lines. Also, there are not as many power chord heavy tracks, lots more picking involved.

While the songs are slower, there are some hard hitters, and the melodies are already getting stuck in my head after the 4th listen. I don’t think the album is terrible, but I still think less of it than “Stay What You Are” and “Through Being Cool” but I can definitely see how they progressed to this, to many people’s chagrin.

Week 2
“Driving in the Dark” is a great song. While more laid back than their old stuff, this tune has a great chorus melody and still rockin’ in my opinion, also it has an almost “At Your Funeral” feel in the guitar in the chorus. Chris’ voice is also more relaxed, and you can especially tell during the bridge of this song when it is more exposed. Those annoyed by his voice before may be able to tolerate it, but people who liked it before may not now.

The title track is my favorite so far, and while the intro scared me off at first and still seems out of place with its dissonance, the chorus makes up for it with it’s catchiness and use of falsetto. I also dig the augmentation of the chorus melody in the bridge.

Week 3
The album continues to grow on me. I feel that anyone who was open enough to accept their change in “Stay what You Are” can accept and like this if they just listen to it a few times. All truly great bands go through style changes. Although some people may feel that this is a step backwards, I still prefer this to a “Stay What You Are” replica, or if they were still a Lifetime-like band. As much as I love those albums, they have already been made. Even lyrically this album is different, being a bit more on the positive side (not saying much for this band). I do miss lines about drinking blood, but what can you do?

The closer, “Tomorrow Too Late” is another great song and a good end to the album, and the beginning of it sounds very Beatles “Magical Mystery Tour.”

Week 4
Well, the album will be out in about a week and I stand firm as I read reviews in AP and hear opinions from others with advance copies saying that this album is weak. Although this album has grown on me, it still ranks below their last two and only ahead of “Can’t Slow Down” for me. But all their albums are great, and if you agree with me there, then there is no way that this album wouldn’t be worth a buy.

I'm a huge Saves The Day fan. But I'll be honest for a moment. It did take some time getting used to In Reverie. But, I do accept change and experimentation. I've read interviews from Chris and they are not trying to change their sound. It evolves. The Beatles sound evolved. I like it. Don't criticze what you don't know. STD are honest and humble in their profession. There are not many bands I can say the same thing. I look forward in the future to more Saves the Day.

Okay, I really liked this album. I don't care about with everybody else says. I some how knew this album wouldn't turn out to be a hit with the old fans. I dunno, I feel I can really realate to this album and the lyrics in it.

I personally think Chris' voice sounds good - not the usaual Chris - but good. I like the music, too.

I'm sorry! I just LIKE this album!

They AREN'T big yet, though. That's what you people are missing. Nobody who likes pop music that I know has ever heard of them. I've liked them since "Through Being Cool" and I support them in whatever they do. I love them. Even if I hated it I'd support it because it IS Saves The Day.

I had really no idea that they signed to "Dreamworks" - I thought they were still on Vagrant. Maybe it's the same thing. What do I know?

Okay, so I'm saying this - I liked this album and I am a huge fan of their older stuff - yes, I have been a fan since then. I didn't just hear about them now and I like this album.

I think it's worth it to buy it and I will defend it to whatever people say. One because I really liked the album and two because I love Saves The Day. So get off of it. It's a good album. Go away.

Weezer with Pinkerton? No way. Thats crazy. Weezer had only one previous album, many radio hits and more of a pop-culture following.

Saves The Day is completely different, the two can't be compared. The majority of people who have heard of Saves the Day before this and liked them are a different, probably a little more credible. It's a bigger insult for STD fans to dislike this album than it was for Pinkerton to be shunned.

What I am trying to say is that in order to be into the 'underground music scene' or whatever you want to call it, you have to put forth some effort. Finding great bands isn't as simple as turning on the radio, so fans of this breed of music have a little more credibility in my opinion. Its not based on knowledge generally, but following good music is a passion for a lot of people who do it. The majority of people who people who hate this album are a lot different than the majority who blasted Pinkerton back in the mid-90's, and that's why I think its a bigger insult for a STD fan to shun this compared to the way Pinkerton was recieved.

I hope that made some sense.

And besides, Master P has put out better stuff than this.

"I AM bitching at members of my gender for being dumb enough to pick up an album as devoid of purpose, quality, or authentic emotion as this one. Although, as a practical matter I think it's just as inexcusable if you're a girl to support music that carries STD's bias. Nevertheless it's all the punk-cum-lately fratboys who pick up this crap and will start reappearing at shows that are the bigger problem in my book. "

The fact that you claim this album carries no emotion shows that you probably didn't pay any actual attention to it, for the same reason the majority of the people here haven't: It's just too different for you. And that's okay. But someday you'll be able to grasp what it all is.

Again, you CANNOT single out emo bands. If nothing else I think they are targeting their intended audience quite well - I think the screaming girlies caught on as an accident. But when you go to a Brand New show and see Jesse saying "But I am paid to make girls panic while I sing" AS IT FUCKING HAPPENS RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM you begin to realize that they did not choose these fans - these fans chose them.

There are, of course, exceptions (see also: Count The Stars).

And to claim that STD is biased is just absolutely wrong. I feel that as far as the subjects of the songs go, when the subject is a relationship with a person, there is a pretty good spread of male to female and anger to romance in respect to both genders (enough to even give reasonable support to an inference that Chris Conley is bisexual). Perhaps Conley's lyrics are decidedly violent, but you have to see them as symbolic. Your argument holds no water.

    Finally:
I honestly am sick of hearing complaining about people who come to shows that AREN'T dressed in the traditional punk uniform. Yes, some of them are annoying, but so are the kids in the spiked leather jackets and the massive liberty spikes or the hornrimmed glasses and the corduroy pants. Annoying people and good people shop at all kinds of different stores. My ex-drummer was probably the most "punk" person I ever met but you'd never guess it going through his closet.

Well, I have to say, this recrod is definately different than anything they've done. But damn if it ain't catchy. Chris even takes a new stab at vocals. I'm ashamed to say this: I like it. It's.....good....but more of a 60s pop kind of way. A lot more toned down. And Can't Slow Down sucks balls. I said it earlier in this thread, but none of you seemed to listen to me: anything with a punk beat and high vocals is not a good combination, and leads to whole records (e.g. Can't Slow Down) sounding repetitive and uninteresting. Through Being Cool will remain the best Saves the Day album.

Sure, many people will respond that "it's punk and it doesn't matter" but when a band tries as hard as STD seems to be doing to woo the pop-female audience and abandons the pit (and/or the more egalitarian Lifetime sound) one has to wonder who the hell their audience is supposed to be?"

Pretty much 95% of rock music is sexist because there are so few female musicians who do anything noteworthy. The ones that do are nearly exclusively solo artists.

But just because a song doesn't make you want to run around and throw people does not make it any more effeminate than, say, half of Cursive's songs.

Anyway, it's absolutely ridiculous to accuse emo alone of being sexist when just about every band ever has written at least one whiny girl song.

Besides that, don't bitch at the bands, bitch at the stupid members of your gender who are too busy fawning over someone (who is usually singing about how he wants to kill a girl JUST LIKE THEM because she was fucking idiotic too) as opposed to picking up a guitar or a bass or fuck even a piano or turntables or a moog and making songs that are important to then.

    Encourage action, not inaction.

I haven't even heard this album yet, but I have to say you all are a bunch of "holier than thou" naysayers.

If a band wants to change, then they will change. What's the big fucking deal? You think it's better to be so set in your ways that you become nonchalant and obstinant in your style?

Did you think for one minute that they aren't doing this for you? Or that the bands out there don't give a shit what you think about them? Maybe it's just a way for them to get our agression, emotion, pain - through an artistic outlet.

This is a royal FUCK YOU to all the people that can't do anything but give these hard working bands a hard time.

One more thing asswhipes, disliking things because they are trendy or popular is one of the most unoriginal, thoughtless, and baseless fads around today. Disliking a band because they "sold out" (aka, did it for money/popularity and not for the _music_) develops from the same mindset as selling out in the first place.

Why you guys have to indulge in this whole political tidal pool of judging a band by whether or not they have done something to get popular is beyond me.

Stop, take a step back, and absorb the music. After all, that's really all that matters right? The mental euphoria that we get from listening to our favorite bands?
