For the sake of this review, we're going to simply state that Billie, Mike, and Tre are 3/5 of The Network for simplicity. Now, for the actual review. Where to begin? This could be one of the surprise records of 2003, tearing down yet another wall between punk and Genre X (this time around being new-wave.) The record starts off with "Joe Robot," a spectacular off-the-wall combination of synth sound and older, ramones-esque punk riffs on guitar. Billie Joe's voice is present on this track (it seems to alternate with another voice I'm not familiar with throughout the album) and all around a strong track. "Transistors Gone Wild" is a song that you finally start to get a feel for, and then it's over. This is a trend that goes on throughout the album...very disjointed music that takes a few listens to fully adapt to, and suddenly the songs just end. Now, I could go on and on explaining every song, but that would make for a long ass review, which would eventually lose your interest. There are no two songs that sound alike, but they do an amazing job of cohering together in tone and theme. And by theme, I mean straight-up punk rock. Unfortunately, the lyrics are not included in the album and I have not been able to find them. But it seems that this album is a comedic mockery of the society we live in... songs like "Right Hand-O-Rama" could be construed as simple jokes, or when looked at closer a commentary on the over-sexed culture that is the American media. "Spike" is a song themed around needing a fix of drugs, and could either be a simple narrative song or if looked at under a different light could be based on the band's history with drug use (by the band, I mean Green Day). And songs like "Roshambo" could even be taken off of "Kerplunk!" with heart-felt lyrics and three-chord melodies ("I don't believe I have something you need / I don't believe I stretch the truth... All I really believe in is you"). Is The Network Green Day? Who knows. And honestly, it doesn't even matter. This album is an incredible blend of punk and new-wave that will totally blow your mind (as long as you're open to new things.) The lyrics could be comedy, they could be serious, they could be both. Probably we'll never know due to the bands "secret" nature. And as an added bonus, the album comes with a bonus dvd with six videos on it, each totally off the hook and will make you sick with blaring colors and crazy visuals.
Sure to be one of the sleeper hits of the year, make sure to pick up a copy.

I love the network! Reminds me of all that good old stuff my mum plays in the kitchen from the 80's. ohemgee, I cannot tell at all that they're Green Day. I cant spell!!!!! wee-hoo What the fuck are you talking about? The Network ARE Green Day. It's really obvious and if you haven't already realized that, you're dumb. by globul#5 i am french and that I sure it is green day. je suis fan de vous les gars.when you come in france? i think every 1 should have their oppinion (i cant spell) i love it because i think the lyrics are great and so is the song. go kill yourself, colin. and if anyone agrees with me, we'll talk. aim chosimba9971 green day r a bunch of sellouts. billie joe swore that he hated bands with masks esp. slipknot. this is dumb. is this really green day (hypothetically)? the liars that we've all been invictimized to? Of course they're Green Day. Voices = the same. Appearance = the same. They have the same kind of lyrics that'd you'd find by Green Day, just twisted into something brilliant. Defiantly a great album. This record is fuckin rad! Heres another thing... when I was reading about the so-called Van Gough, it says... I posted the last comment...sorry. I misread the first few lines. Are you dumb? Billie Joe owns Adeline records. Do you think THIS band would get onto that small of a punk label. It's new wave music! It is obviously Green Day because the Billie's voice is fucking identical. Even look at pictures of them, he even stands just like Billie. I Could Not beleve that it was not Billie Joe Singing I seriously thaught it was!! Especially in Teenagers From Mars because their voices are like Identical... What if they did somthing Different and Hid theyre Identities? Lol Jk Jk But Seriously OMG yeah and ; the terrerist is trying to tell us something i think he is saying kiss me smart ass mother fucker yeah that movie rocks do remember the signel lol hell yeah hey has anyone seen team america yet the network rocks man hell yeah mother fuckers hey fuck you the network kick my ass and your ass.! hey fuck er the network sucks you mother fucker All you Fuckers that hate the network are going to cry. you are the pig fuckers and are going to pay. Were going to fuck your mother while you cry like bitch. arrrr once me and and phats get back from hollywood you cum suckin corporate whoress! Jajajaja They are great, just for one simple reazon. They are Green day. original? do you have any idea how many fucking synth punk bands are out there? when i first heard one of their songs on the radio i thought Le Shok had reformed and hit it big. in my opinion, this is fucking green day trying to cop the San Diego scene circa 2000, complete with Le Shok riffs and Locust outfits. Quality album. Anyone considered that they sound like both Green Day and Devo mixed (ie, Billie Joe, Tre and mike as well as a couple of devo)? The singer is almost undoubtedly Billie Joe. original? do you have any idea how many fucking synth punk bands are out there? when i first heard one of their songs on the radio i thought Le Shok had reformed and hit it big. in my opinion, this is fucking green day trying to cop the San Diego scene circa 2000, complete with Le Shok riffs and Locust outfits. Of course Green Day made the album, and it's really good. Yeah exellent album infectious from the start. Definatly green day not only in bj's voice but the songs are obviously similar to green days well minus the synths and stuff, just shows gd can still do it and shake things up a bit coz were all talkin about them (interest before the new album, i duno) who gives a crap if its green day or devo or whoever if your a fan of music punk or new wave then you should get it if the musics good its good doesnt matter what the bands name or members are Pure, utter horseshit. What do you hear in this crap? Seriously, it got old with Reggie and the Full Effect. It's also really disappointing to see everyone fall in line for these guys. "Oh yay, it's Green Day, but punk." It's a big fuckin' conspiracy, this is what they want you to do. They're manipulating your impressionable minds so Donald Rumsfeld can come and sodomize you all. "no, it wasn't billy talent. it didn't sound like a major label group, i heard it on a good college station." "'You Stupid Fuck'". "The only thing you need to own from Adeline is the Thumbs LP and EP. i was just sitting in front of my computer one day searching blindly through the web and all of a sudden i came accross a mention of this band call the Network that supposedly comprised members of green day. i was intrigued and read the article, which did an excellent job of making links between the 2 bands. i decided to check them out on kazaa. needless to say i got hooked. um, there's nothing un-punk about that song streaming on the website. i haven't heard the rest of the album because, well, i just heard about this album when i read the review 2 days ago, but i'm betting the rest is just as punk as this song. come on man, punk doesn't have to be the same shit over and over again. variation in music is great. especially when you can tie in traditional music forms with new ones. you're an asshole... Its pretty sad that Green Day actually bought into that whole shit that there not punk anymore. Thats why they made this album. What a bunch of assholes. the network kick ass! who is green day anyway? no, it wasn't billy talent. it didn't sound like a major label group, i heard it on a good college station. i heard a song on the radio last week. the band's song writing sounded a lot like Green Day, but it definitely wasn' Green Day. Anyone have any idea who it might be? Best way to put it? They sound "like Green Day trying to not sound like Green Day" That made no sense to me! Then I heard this. Couldn't have put it better myself. i want this for free. not pay. free Fuck, the epoxies? Try The Faint man... that's where the original new wave revitalizers are... This song on the website is cool, I like it. Kinda differant, kinda weird. to cyclops: the epoxies rock. This is definately Green Day and that is not a bad thing at all. Sounds like Devo on crack. The only thing you need to own from Adeline is the Thumbs LP and EP. The Epoxies play a couple of shows in San Francisco...and next thing you know, everybody decides to jump onto New Wave. Dude, who put Green Day in my Network??? i really like the song streaming on the adeline site, but i dont know if i would ever buy this.... maybe.... yeah, i saw this album in the green day section at a record store the other day. that was enough to keep my close-minded ass far, far away. ew... this album is definately one of the best albums of 2003. Green Day have a great ammount of talent and it shows on this record. it's really awesome the way in which the guys experimented with synthesithers and electronics to add into their sound. the end reslult was a good one. |
