The return of the ring. It seems the question posed by the last album and many a t-shirt has been answered, "when it rings, will you answer?"

Because someone does, in fact, answer, and unleashes an opening track that causes you to turn up the volume instinctually. Your ears are primed and senses are ready to receive the highly anticipated In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3.

Coheed and Cambria exploded onto the scene almost two years ago, with an album that caused many people a lot of confusion. You listened to it all the way through, and then sat there dumbstruck. What the fudge was that? After a second listen you were so excited about this record. You held it in your little hands and told all your friends and couldn't believe how many people this seemingly-too-intelligent band would touch. The Second Stage Turbine Blade set a dangerous precendent for the world of underground music, "you better fucking bring it".

Now we finally have the follow-up. The third volume in what is said to be a four-volume series detailing the adventures of Coheed and Cambria, and the Monstar, and Snyper, and apparently the band themselves. This is all sprung from the mind of nerdy Claudio Sanchez, and his supposed graphic novel. Well where is the graphic novel! After listening to this album, the lyrics, the themes brought back, you have to wonder if this isn't some fucked up rock opera the band wrote, illustrated, filmed, and set up in a basement somewhere in the TriState area, just waiting for the time to dole out a little more to the rabid fanbase.

The album itself, however, maybe doesn't seem as cool as the concept behind it. After an opening track akin to an overture before an aria, slow, droll notes ooze out of the quiet. The first song is not a banger, like expected. That's cool, they will rock you later. Claudio's voice has never sounded more interesting, whether he's singing, near-screaming, "coo-coo-cachoo"ing or "wa-ho"ing. The album slows down, picks up, and slows down again and again, like a movie soundtrack. When its on, its on, but when its off you just sit there wondering what the fuck are they doing. (Drugs probably...if there ever was a reason to start smoking weed, its this album.) Half the songs turn into super-long tech rock jams that shoot all over the place and then just end into some ambient noise or scream. Songs like the three part "Velorium Camper" just confuse and entertain you. The album very much is a mish-mash, and while solid, is maybe a little too concepty to make an impact. But just when you think that, a song like "A Favor House Atlantic" rocks your nuts off and leaves you thinking whether or not the band has gone pop. You know they haven't gone pop cos you just listened to the final "Camper" song " Al the Killer", and that shit ain't gonna be on no TRL. You're confused. Satisfied, but confuse. And PS- "The Crowing" is the standout track by far.

So it rang, we answered, and its going to take some digesting to accept fully. Nothing will ever top that time you listened to Turbine Blade and finally GOT it, and loved it and worshiped it and sang along in the car to it. Seeing some of these songs live on the "screamo" (dumbest word/"genre" EVER) monsters of rock tour with the "Th" sound bands (that's Thrice and Thursday is you live under a rock) will probably help Coheed's cause, but if you're a fan, just remember that feeling you had when you first heard them. You didn't know what to think. And it was good.

    TO this guy:
yeah... this band sucks ass, the lead singer should slice his wrist and right we suck on the wall so everyone can understand why he did it.
No these guys aren't brilliant, instead of just writing a song about how sad they are, they make a big dumbass story about it. So, their lives are so sad that they have to make an "epic" story about it, pathetic. Simply pathetic. They aren't progressive, they aren't unique, they're just another crappy emo band. No talent, nothing good to say, they should be shot for sucking so much.

T hey aren't emo, and Claudio said that he made this story up since his own life was too boring for him to write about. Also, emo woulf be My Chemical Romance, not this.

To the guy below me, Travis does play lead, but most of the really amazing guitar work it Claudio (the super fast riff in the bridge of the crowing, the cool stuff on tracks 3 and 8, etc). And I really hate punk fans sometimes because they judge all music solely by how much it sounds like every other punk band. You all worship bad religion for writing like 80 songs that are just 4 power chords in 16th notes with distortion and palm muting...it all sounds exactly the same and takes no talent, its the same thing blink does. You people just hate bands that actually know how to play their instruments. Coheed is amazing, Rush is amazing, Thrice is pretty good, and Bad Religion sucks...I am so sick of this punker than thou bullshit; you people need to grow up, because most people realize there is more to music than trite political opinions and terrible instrumentation around 14.

i fucking hate review boards, but i have to post. i dont see why its important to catagorize bands, and i also don't understand why people get on here and say that coheed and cambria sucks. no one cares if you think they suck, go to a support group and work out your hate problems, dont come here and bitch about things using co&ca as a whipping post. why waste time saying you hate things? go harvest some wheat or find something that you like to do, no one likes hostility. now for the reason i came here. coheed and cambria is a story put to music. claudio sanchez is writing a sci-fi novel and comic book as we speak. this is where my respect is strengthened ten fold for coheed and cambria. favorite part of the album=travis stever on lead guitar.

If you don't like the CD, then don't fucking comment on it. No one gives a shit if you hate Coheed or not, the only people who should respond to this are people that actually like the album. Such as myself.

You lot are wankers. This is not emo. This is not punk. This is...original. Yeah just coz they tour with Thrice and Thursday, they're instantly emo? Right?

I have guessed by the immature nature of this site, that 90% of the people on here must be below 18.

Just fuck off back to your "old-skool", anything-but-Clash hating little homes.

why does this remind me of Rush? oh wait, It's because everyone seems to rip on them too. not to mention the voices between the two singers are strikingly similar. I'm a big fan of both bands and I believe they bring SIMILAR aspects into their music. Plenty of talent in both bands, although Rush is better. Yeah, I'd go buy Moving Pictures before this CD, but CnC don't come off as a Rush knockoff and they write some pretty cool tunes, not to mention being original (Yeah I said it, name a few other bands for me who sound the same.)

Why don't you tell everyone which bands aren't "fucking crap" according to your bounty of musical knowledge? You are obviously quite bright, as you compare Coheed and Cambria to The Starting Line and other bands, which they sound *exactly* like. That's what Coheed and Cambria are: pop-punk. What an idiot. I don't care whether you like it or not, but it doesn't even sound close to pop-punk, or any real vein of punk for that matter.

ok eff this review. Coheed brought the fuckin rock on this cd. There is so much detail that this cd takes almost 20 listens to understand all of the technical musical cues they used, let alone the story here. If you think this cd is just their way of following their last album, you're wrong. Listen to the hints of doubling vocals as well as the miscellaneous references to various genres of music. By saying this cd doesn't bring about the same emotion of discovery as the last album did is pig ignorant and you should never listen or review music again. If you dont "get it", you shouldn't try to act like you understand what this band is doing.

hm.. well.. i wrote this review, and it didn't get posted, i don't know if this is a punknews.org no-no.. but.. here's MY review

not trying to steal the spotlight or anything, just want some feedback more than anything.

I swear, the first time you hear this band, you're going to think this is Geddy Lee's 'emo-core' side project; but, as soon as you get past the striking similarities to Rush's lead singer, Coheed and Cambria really does have something special to add to the 'scene'.. or.. whatever.

In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3 does not only have a strange name, but features some of the catchiest, darkest, most melodic songs I've heard all year from any band. The eerie contrast in 'A Favor House Atlantic' between the seemingly happy instrumentals, and the twisted and surely emotional lyrics (Good eye, sniper/I shoot, you run/The words you scribbled on the walls/With the loss of friends you didn't have/I called you and the time is right/Are you in or are you out?).

From there, you've got the songs that are purely twisted and emotional, like ’The Camper Velorium III: Al The Killer’ (ok, I don't know what’s up with these track names either, maybe I’m not 'emo-core' enough). This song is about as dark as you can get (When I kill her, I'll have her./Dance upon the graves of the dead, upon your name/Die white girls, die white girls./Dance upon the graves of the dead, upon the graves of the dead) but it's just as catchy as the rest of the songs, and it's what makes Coheed and Cambria special.

Usually with bands like this, they’re just purely emotional, and they don’t make much of an attempt to make it listenable. I think that we've had enough screaming and crying in albums, and that it's time for some innovation. It's a hard concept to grasp, I know. This band proves that if you want to be sad, be sad, but you can still make some good music; and if you want to listen to the harmonies, listen to the harmonies, and if you want to get real fucked up listening to these lyrics, go right ahead. The level of depth to this band is amazing, and it’s what sets them apart from bands like Thursday or Thrice (who, coincidentally, they are currently on tour with).

From the odd track titles, to the ridiculously catchy melodies and dark lyrics, it’s not hard to realize that Coheed and Cambria is one special band. This eleven track dynamo will have you enticed from the time you buy it, to at least like, three weeks after. Buy this album.

This is a music web site. That is an insult. Rather it "pisses you off" that I obviously have more musical depth than you or not, don't tell me not to point out and idiot when I see one.

a band that will survive the bullshit that the scene has thrown at us in the past year or so. acts like MCR, Finch, and Thursday will bow before this band in an effort to try and even figure out how this band's machine works. this band will survive, and you cannot say that about anyone else really. they are doing their own thing and having one hell of a time doing so. with talent oozing from their asses i really doubt that the follow-up to this will be nothing short of amazing. a great album, though, still start with the second stage turbine blade, just to get the first half of the saga that this band has worked for and produced. i really doubt anyone will ever understand this band or do them the justice that they deserve.

Eh.. Nice try at a review, but it just didn't cut it.
I personally love In Keeping Secrets, more than SSTB. However, I understand why people could be disappointed with it. Songs like "Blood Red Summer" are quite poppy; however, they never lose their integrity. It's an amazingly eclectic album with stand-out tracks being "The Light & the Glass" and "The Crowing." It DOES take a while to get used to, but it's worth the wait. Yes...that is all.

This album is like "Matrix: Reloaded" to the first "Matrix." The first Matrix was unique and so fresh and cool (conceptually) that it blew people away and the same withe "Second stage..." "Matrix: Reloaded" was still good but at points it was drawn out and over done. I hope the third album and third movie really wrap shit up.

Also, as "intelligent" and avante garde as many of you people think this is, its a really fucking dorky story, its somewhere in between "LOTR" and D&D as far as concept goes. Fuck this band not because they suck, and they do. No, fuck these guys because of all their 15 year old (thats a generalization, i don't want to here how old you actually are) dorky ass-clown fans who think this is the hottest shit since I pinched one off about 20 minutes ago. If Coheed and Cambria should be labelled anything, it should be sci fi. I can't stand most material from the other bands that they always seem to be grouped with, that's why I don't like seeing the same label applied to them. Honestly, they don't do too much screaming, so I don't see why people compare them to other bands that do. They are an awesome band and I'm proud to be a part of the scene that they came out of.

If anyone has Capture the Flag's "Walking Away from Everything" CD there is a riff somewhere on that that is exactly the same as one of Thrice's. Excellent album, very epic. Took me a few listens to fully get into it, just like The Second Stage Turbine Blade, but excellent nonetheless. The storytelling is just right, a little cheesy, but not TOO over the top. Definitely makes you want to read a book or see a film about it. I think it's great to see them intersperse pieces from the last cd also (intro, track 23). Great job guys, hopefully I can see this stuff live soon.

I hate band name abbreviations, CoCa especially. I guess you're cooler though if you abbreviate it, you must be a die hard fan.

It's like there's a couple of "cool" clubs on either side of any off-beat band that comes out (*ahem*MarsVolta*ahem*), who bicker like children. You forget the point of this music entirely.

Its like punk and indie music have become a fashion show, where "what I listen to is BETTER than what YOU listen to!!!".. seriously, grow up... I thought this shit was about acceptance of others, where has that gone? Maybe you like this album (which I do..) GREAT.. or maybe you don't (plenty of people) GREAT.. but why fuck with other peoples opinions? Makes you sound childish..

You are all quick to trash bands because they aren't hard enough, or they are TOO hard, or in this case, the singer sounds like Geddy Lee (near truth, i'll give you that), but you forget to realize that other people besides you exist on this planet, and may enjoy these bands. The bonus track on this album is terrifyingly bad... but the rest of it is surprisingly listenable. The band's best quality is their ability to (supposedly) write around a story and yet not get so caught up in the metaphor as to make the music unlistenable. Maybe it's just that the themes that the band is writing about are universal enough that everyone can identify....

Of course none of the same can be said for this review.
