Taken for what it is, The Early November's first long player isn't all that bad, but for the life of me, I just can't understand everyone's infatuation with acoustic songs. Sure, songs like the album's opener "Ever So Sweet" and "Dinner At The Money Table" are pretty and all that, but putting them together with the rest of this album accomplishes nothing more than smothering any momentum that the rest of the songs built. "Something That Produces Results" comes out of nowhere, and has a fantastic breakdown that really gets the listener excited for the rest of the album. "The Mountain Range In My Living Room" is interesting enough, but is immediately followed by three songs that are bland in comparison to the songs before them. After the next acoustic song, I forgot what I was listening to.

Several of these songs, particularly "Baby Blue" and "Fluxy", make the album even more frustrating, as certain parts almost grab you, but then lack the real punch to become memorable. Lead vocalist Arthur Enders has a very good voice, and almost saves some of the tracks, but the meloldies are often too similar to each other to become a real force. The production quality, as larger record label albums tend to be these days, is very good, but the inconsistent songwriting really keeps this album from being anything incredibly special.

Again, this is not a bad album, and I encourage you all to listen to some songs, especially "Something That Produces Results", which suggests that maybe this band is capable of something more. An all-acoustic album is in the works in the next couple of months, and maybe some of this album should have waited for that instead.

14 year old me will always have a spot in my heart for this record.

luvmusic1017 (February 5, 2007)

this cd is a classic.

DoItForJohnnyJay (June 21, 2006)

This CD beats their previous CD.

You shouldn't need some kind of continuity to make it good for yourself to listen to. Don't be a prick when you review stuff, kids. Grow up.

Anonymous (June 13, 2006)

i dont know what this reviewer is talking about. the album rocks and the new triple disc is going to kick ass!

md40_07 (December 4, 2005)

no...they choose the wrong songs for this album. They dont suck they just killed all momentum with the acoustic songs. The word Idiot really hurts my feelings to...please stop (sarcasim)

crazytoledo (December 3, 2005)

Because they suck.

your a douche bag...

Anonymous (December 17, 2004)

this is probably one of my all time favorite records...if you cant tell that ace(the singer and songwriter) doesnt write in a smart, talented way, then you obviously dont know much about music...even if you dont like the style, you should still respect him and the whole band for the way they go about writing music...they keep things natural, nothing is autotuned or click tracked...its just them and their instruments, the way it should be...so give them some cred even if you dislike their style...

Anonymous (October 15, 2004)

if you like pop punk/emo rock like the starting line and the early november, etc. check out this really awesome band called Stanley at www.purevolume.com/stanley

TENemorocker182 (July 17, 2004)

T.E.N. fuckin rocks "I want to hear you sad" is a great damn song its very catchey and if you dont like it then your just to embarrassed to admit it! "Open Eyes" is also a great song this is a very talented singer and guitar player and he is fuckin awesome acoustic.!!

The Early November rock. this is a good c.d. that i've heard in a while!!! They rock!!! I love them. they should be getting more recognition.

slave_to_the_pavement (June 27, 2004)

this is one of my favourite bands, i love their music it really calming, i dont enjoy listening to screamo all the time so this band is refreshing. i know they arent the most original but i still love them.

Anonymous (June 21, 2004)

You guys are so funny. I hope you all contract herpes of the anus. Have fun arguing like 3rd graders over a band nobody gives a crap about. Don't bother replying, as I probably won't even remember posting this message. So long, and good luck on your middle school graduations.

Back it up? With what? Fighting? You propose we start hurling physical threats on the internet now? Whhooooo

Wow - I must say, I missed this gem first time around. And I say GEM because of Jesse's comments.

Jesse (October 27, 2003)

funkisdead has to be one of my favorite people on this freakin' website.

funkisdead (October 27, 2003)

whereas this score is for hot topic. i can see its merit in smaller towns where kids have no alternative but to buy records from their mall.
the internet makes all of that irrelevant though... i'd much rather give my cash direct to a record label, than go to hot topic, pay the extra bucks, and support the commercial extortion of a social movement that originated as a protest against the commercial extortion of social movements. ahem.

there is nothing in hot topic that i could't find at an indie record store, or direct from a label or a band's site. in fact, if you pay for quicker shipping from a label, you generally end up paying what you'd pay at the store, and you can usually pre-order things.

so that means you'd go to hot topic for the fashion? you can go to band/label sites or even interpunk to buy that shit. unless, of course, you want those hideously embarassing, tacky "emo" shirts, or weird goth dresses.

and you're right, hot topic isn't owned by ambercrombie, its primarily owned by our earth friendly, punk friendly comrades over at THE GAP!!! yeah!

this score is for hot topic and unnecessarily fueling the corporate destruction of our art.

funkisdead (October 27, 2003)

This score is for kool keith, jesse, and icapped2pac!!! fucking yeah!!!

Anonymous (October 27, 2003)

i'll tell you why people talk shit about hot topic. think about it for one second. if you've got half of a brain then this will come to mind. what is one of the majoy premises of punk? anti-establishment. what is hot topic? an establishment. what is punk rebelling against? pre-packaged mass-sold clothes and music. hot topic, the worst store in the world, does a friggin wonderful job of bringing punk music and clothes to the mainstream where it never should be bought. it packages conformity which is another main thing that punk music is totally against. punks do not conform. and hot topic represents utter conformity. my suggestion to you is stop being biased since you work there. and look at the real picture. hot topic is no better than abercrombie or american eagle. in fact it is worse, becuase at least those stores aren't trying to deny what they are.

Jesse (October 26, 2003)

Who said anything about Hot Topic?

Even though anyone didn't say anything about Hot Topic, the place still blows ass. If you want to buy music, go to a freakin' record store.

Anonymous (October 26, 2003)

I love how you kids always talk shit about Hot Topic, when I know you all shop there...I don't see why anyone wouldn't wanna shop there, or at least stop in and check out the music...
well I know only about half of the stores sell music, but the ones that do, especially my store, have such a good selection of music...all of the true punks and hardcore kids stop by all the time and check out the CDs...Even the bands that you worship shop at Hot Topic...Dan from the Suicide Machines is in my store all the damn time whenever he's home from the road.

I know a lot of the products we sell are stupid, but the music selection is very good and there's tons of great band t-shirts once you look past the Good Charlotte tees.

Yes, Hot Topic is run by a large corporation...no, we aren't affiliated or owned by Abercrombie as many people like to believe...but it doesn't matter because the company is run by real punks and people who are really into the music...plus each store can play whatever music they wanna play, there's nobody telling us what CDs to play, and we certainly don't ever play GC or any other crappy pop band.

themuffingirl (October 26, 2003)

it's either critics controlling coversations or it's money blind robots

I could comment on your lack of intellegence but that is too easy and i'm sure you already know that.

Instead I invite you to visit downtown detroit and send your scared, suburban 13-year old ass back to where you came from. Perhaps when you learn how to talk like an adult and have a grip on reality, maybe then people will take you seriously.

Until then put your cd player back on featuring simple plan while waiting for mommy and daddy to pick you up from the roller skate rink

haha you are all a bunch of 15 year old niggers. this band has more fuckin heart than you will ever have in your shitty fuckin hardcore bands. if you have noticed, they dont give a fuck what you say, cause they made a good fucking record, way better than any of the shit you listen to, svaes the day, tbs, the new SHITTTTTTY thursday, the SHITTTY coheed, youre all fags. their music is sincere and honest. and if you havent noticed they dont give a fuck about money, at their shows all their shit is always cheaper than every other band there. get your faggot head out of your ashsole and take a look around. youll realize how much of a fag you are soon....you will.

funkisdead (October 24, 2003)

dude, i think you missed the point.

Anonymous (October 24, 2003)

homegrown haven't been around that long at all.

funkisdead (October 24, 2003)

yeah homegrown have been making records since before that moron was born... since before most of the kids that are into this band were born, probably.
these guys probably just saw a finch video and went "cachink" (sound of cash register).

Anonymous (October 24, 2003)

"crappy and unoriginal?? too bad they're not more creative like allister, huh? and to the people that they didn't like them live, who did you prefer at the show: allister or homegrown?? give me a break, i saw them and thought they were the highlight of the show."

you just got in this scene didnt you? While both allister and home grown really dont have all that much of a unique sound at least they are fun on stage and they have been around awhile. Early november sounds like every other peice of crap and they suck live.

Anonymous (October 24, 2003)

this score is for the word "grundel"
and why should we have to choose between tatecore and tardcore? i agree that granting the kid his own musical style is a bit much, but can't the two terms just be synonymous?
tard is a great word, you can stick a RE or a BAS in front. you can keep people guessing.

They did do it on purpose, and they got permission for it from the Get Up Kids themselves. No biggie.

That song that plays on their website's flash intro sounds exactly like a song off of TGUK's "4 Minute Mile." They even sing "I don't want you to love me anymore" with the same melody and everything. That just pisses me off. It makes me even more mad if they didn't do this on purpose.

funkisdead (October 23, 2003)

e11 is officially the gheyist abbreviation for a band name, ever.

Anonymous (October 23, 2003)

Both of these bands are tate-core to the max

e11, hahahahahahahaha...hahahahahaha

guy down there who said the only good bands on drive thru were the rx bandits and and allister. uhh if you like allistrer then you must like every other band on drive thru and every run-of-the-mill pop-punk band around becuase thats exactly what they are. how canb you trash a band with TALENT like E11 and then claim to like allister.

Anonymous (October 22, 2003)

i just wanted to let you all know that this cd gets respect because none of the vocals or guitars were put through auto tune, and its pretty fuckin hard to sing in key like that. so prop E11

Anonymous (October 22, 2003)

RX bandits are drive-thru alright,?
didn't allister used to be ska until they decided to lump themselves into the rest of the drowning pop-punk scene?
RXB-innovative, ingenious, and all around good guys, allister..assholes, annoying, and no talent. sorry.
fuck you very much.

Anonymous (October 22, 2003)

Anonymous (October 22, 2003)

you know what? This band sucks, they are completely unoriginal and are just crappy in general. Stop defending shitty bands, im not punk nor do I claim to be. poor guys... you realize these bands kids like you and i who are perfectly happy with their own existences... their whole family is probably stoked for these kids, their friends are probably having a great time, but the scene they try to be a part of has nothing better to say than "this shit is ridorkulous."
the saddest part is that it really IS ridiculous, and all those people are blinded by their love for their friends and family.

it took me ages to find the comment with the "u". but it's really not a big issue. when people will start putting effort into changing things that really make a difference i don't know.

Icapped2pac (October 21, 2003)

"Why do people care if others spell you like "u"?"

Because 9 times out of 10, it's a symbol of their overall lack of intelligence and inability to communicate an idea or thought. That type of shit belongs in AOL teen chat rooms. Go look at the referenced comment down there and tell me honestly that you believe that person is not a hopeless moron. And we all know that, in life, if you're a hopeless moron, all you'll ever amount to in life is.... president of the United States.

Anonymous (October 21, 2003)

oh yea, the ep was better, i agree

Anonymous (October 21, 2003)

perfect review, my thoughts exactly. i'm not a member of the 'i hate all that is drive thru' coalition, nor do i worship all that is drive thru. this band has a lot of potential, and the singer has a great voice, for being 19/20 these guys wrote a great record. i'm looking forward to the next album. but opening an album w/ an acoustic track is a bad idea.

Anonymous (October 21, 2003)

i saw them live and they were terribly bland, average poppunk fare. It is essentially what you would expect from drivethru. get the new larry arms instead

Anonymous (October 21, 2003)

Why do people care if others spell you like "u"? lol who cares if people are lazy and don't want to look intelligent since they care so much about what people think.. besides that the album in my mind was great.

Anonymous (October 21, 2003)

i actually like the cd.. more emo than the ep.. but still good. i do agree that at point its only the singers voice that saves the song.. but its still worthwhile.. pick it up or just dont bitch about it untill you listen a few times.. get past the Drive Thru thing..

Anonymous (October 21, 2003)

This is overrated

Anonymous (October 21, 2003)

there already is a TEN acoustic CD and it is by far their best release to date. it has an earlier, and might i add....waaaaaaay better version of Ever So Sweet. this, i believe its an 8 song CD can only be purchased online or at one of the shows, if there are copies still around.

Icapped2pac (October 21, 2003)

"I was a little disappointed in this album. I thought the E.P. was alot stronger."

Ditto. Glad I downloaded it instead of dropping bills on it. I'm sure that acoustic album's gonna make the mall girls' coozes drip, though. The album gets a 5, but fans of TEN who can spell "you" get a 10. Those that can't get Kobe-style anal damage.

It's funny you say that. TEN and Finch suck horribly. Rx Bandits are the only thing that is decent on Drive Thru.

Anonymous (October 21, 2003)

Damn it all. I was going to defend this cd. I was going to say that this cd was really good and shouldn't be judged based on the fact that drive thru released it becuase the fact is every band except for finch and TEN on drive thru suck horribly. But then that fucking 10 year old kid down there using his 'u r 2 kewl' type speech had to try to defend it first. Kid, go back to middle school, shop at hot topic, listen to avril and good charlotte, and keeping talking how you do. But your attempt to defend the early november for the rest of us early november fans failed miserably becuase now everyone thinks that little kids like you are the only ones who like them.

inagreendase (October 21, 2003)

I hate how every time genres like this are attempted to be defended, it has to be some fifteen year old using the "u" abbreviation, if you want to call it that. Am I the only person here with bad taste that bothers to type out "you?"

The EP was just "okay." I didn't think anything on it was really as energetic or engimatic as its first track.

From what I've heard on this, this is pretty much just "okay" too. Nothing I'm dropping $14.99 on, that's for sure.

lessthandoug (October 21, 2003)

I agree with the person a few posts below. This album was disappointing. I think the EP was a lot stronger. It had more edge to it as well. I waiting in anticipation for this album and I was very put out with what it turned out to be.

Anonymous (October 21, 2003)

I saw this band live, and it was boring to say the least. This score is the average of the cover art (2/10) and the grammatical and logical skills of the kid below me (0/10)
