I’ll confess I was quite looking forward to this record as I’d enjoyed their previous album though felt it inconsistent. With a new label, new guitarist and a new surname the Distillers had every chance of delivering a top-notch album. But it sounds like they couldn’t be bothered. I didn’t get this album until it had been out a week or so by which point various members of the British press had labelled it a success and were saluting Brody for being an out and out rock superstar as well as a ‘real’ alternative to Avril & Kelly (God help us) in the role model stakes. It was at this point that I began to worry slightly that the album had been overtaken by a whirlwind of hype & melodrama.

Onto the album…. come on you remember. It starts off with the first single; Drain the Blood which I first heard this through this website and really disliked it. However with repeated listens it gets stuck in your head and this alone makes it more enjoyable. From here we move onto more solid ground & the middle of the album is where its at its strongest. Tracks like ‘Die on a Rope’ & ‘The Gallow is God’ represent a step up for the band and had this been the standard all the way across the album it would have been great. ‘The Hunger’ sees them move away from ‘Rancid Tribute Band’ status although unfortunately sounds a bit too much like Hole for their own good. It is however the best track on the record featuring an acoustic guitar with a Santana-esque riff in the middle & Brody proving that she can sing but needs to cut down on the Marlborough’s.

After this things take a turn for the worse. Hall of Mirrors is ok but from then on the best word to describe the songs is anonymous. No matter how hard you try to absorb them it can’t be done and you find yourself playing with the Thomas the Tank Engine ball you got for your birthday. Track 11 ‘Deathsex’ is an interesting contrast to end the album with; it has the most intriguing title of the lot and is by far the worst song on here. A 2-minute song is followed by 10 minutes of feedback and other odd noises. Not big, not clever. Maybe WB has a minimum album length policy or something but if not I fear I’ve missed the point.

One of the unfortunate things about this album is that it requires a summary of all the drama that has preceded it before you can get onto the actual songs because it is this drama that defines it for most people. Without the turmoil that preceded it the review would probably read; the Distillers made an album that was ok, it certainly didn’t suck, but is nothing special. And you’d think…’who?’ Huh that was easy.

if it weren't for "the hunger" and "death sex" this would get five stars, but those songs bring it down to four.

Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at 4:55 PM (EST)

Come on this album deserves AT LEAST 4 stars. not 5 because deathsex could possibly be one of the worst songs ever (1 minute song turnd into a 10 minute song by feedback) Most Tracks are good and all of them get stuck in your head. Most 2 star givers are just pissed that Brodys not with Tim anymore, Tyr for once to give real FAIR reveiws instead of sitting in your moms basement and dissing bands. This album was worth the $12 I spent on it. I do have to say the other albums were better, 5 star material but this album is pretty good to. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME LISTENING TO DEATHSEX ONCE THE LYRICS STOP ITS ALL FEEDBACK!

This band sucks heavy, pendulous balls.
Good point about the revolving lineup of this band, whoever said that. We should make a band out of Brody, Joe Queer and Stza (from LOC). They would all fight to the death while whining about cops/girls/tim armstrong. Stza would win and reform Choking Victim and we all eat vegan ice cream and live happily ever after. The End.

I love The Distillers, and I have for a couple years now, but this album blows. I've listened to it at least once evry day since it came out, hoping that it would grow on me. But I just get more and more annoyed with it every day. They signed to a major, got some skank ass guitar player and turned up the suck. I don't dount that will become just another punk band who signs to a major then gets lost in the shuffle. There isn't a single track on this album that is good. Some are so so , but most suck. Do yourself a favour and go pick up one of thier first two releases instead, then pretend the band broke up and you will live happily ever after. And whatever you do, DO NOT waste your money on a ticket to see them live.

Since when does being 'punk' mean that you have to make obscene or vulgar remarks? Telling people to f**k off or referring to them in a demeaning manner is simply not what being 'punk' is about. Punk is about being fine with who you are and what you're into even if it's not the norm, and it's about not worrying about what others think as well. Not worrying what they think but at the same time not demeaning anyone for their differing views or preferences. Yes, you should be able to stand up for what you believe in and feel when that is needed. But the remarks that are constantly being made on this and several other boards like it are certainly not punk. If punk comes to mean that one has to berate the mainstream fan beside them or kick the Gap ad girl next door then it will have become just another work that belongs in quotations.

There's a big difference between the Dwarves or GG Allin being purposely controversial as part of their art and a 15 year old kid sitting in his mom's basement behind a cloak of anonymity using the fact that there's a woman in a band to post blatantly sexist and overtly offensive shit. Stop looking at this like it's some great injustice that’s being inflicted upon you. We want this message board to remain anonymous and free to use as our readers choose. To keep it so we’ll continue to moderate this site in the same way we always have: the fact is we rarely (like 2 or 3 times a year IF that) remove anything…

What about the Dwarves? Can I not review some of their stuff, even though they have a clear connection with punk rock. Same with GG. And you can bet that if GG was reading this he would be saying much grosser things than what those other guys had written. I mean, look at the Anti Nowhere League for christs sake... This is BS. Not even the most hard line anarchist punk band members would resort to CENSORING a web page. You didn't have to take the stupid shit off, all you had to do is tell them how idiotic it was. By the way, I didn't post any of that stuff, I grew out of that gross punk "joke" phase when I was a lot younger than them.

*4131*: Moderating this site has nothing to do with being punk or not. If kids are going to sit there behind their computer screens and write sexist, vulgar and obscene stuff about a person there's no reason we need to tolerate it. It has nothing to do with free speach, or being "punk" (notice we left all the other negative comments below) and everything to do with regulating our community so that things don't degenrate into complete nonsense here. We very very rarely have to step in and do something like that but this thread crossed the line. We try and do the same with blatant racism.

Yeah, there's no reason to be stupid anonymous shit talkers. Brody's done enough on her own- as an individual and NOT as a particular gender- to deserve negative comments. Why go to the stupid sexist bullshit when there's so much to critique before that point?
That said, are people suggesting that gender-specific insults are verboten? There ARE more female-specific insults (compare the # of terms for vagina versus terms for penis, for one, or for negative female as opposed to negative male epithets). Does this mean that calling this particular person x,y,z, is sexist or just hating that person?
I have no idea, though I think a lot of the comments (especially the unnecessary physical description of her genitals) are fucked and lame society shit.P.S.- I'm not interested in Brody's future or current art. I hope her band mates get wise and disengage from her trainwreck.

tim's a fucking paedophile and brody just came to her fucking senses and realised she was married to a talentless try-hard dickhead who snapped her up when she was a fucking schoolgirl and wouldn't let go. i'm glad she left him because he desrves to have his heart broken for being such a dirty old man.
oh, and sing sing death house was a good album, not great, but good. the self-titled sucked, and this one looks to be shit. i'm going to give it a miss. good review.

I honestly think this could be my contender for LP of the year. I can't believe all the hate that's goin on! It's one of the more solid albums I've heard in a while. So many sing alongs, I dunno, I feel like I must have a special copy or something!!!

It probably takes a year and a half to save up 20 bucks in allowance money. Damn that’s a lot of lawn mowing. You make me want to vomit. Just like this band does. Not good chunky vomit either. This is the first album I've bought in over a year and a half.

This is the best fucking album out there right now.

Until "Coral Fang", I hadn't heard an album in which every song on it was amazing save "The Decline" by NoFX.

I don't really care for the politics behind the collapse of the marriage and the signing to Warner because every song on this album totally owns. I don't give a fuck who sleeps with who or how much money they made to take out some of the swearing, cause it's all good.

I disagree with this review entirely. The only way he could have been telling the truth was if he said that "Coral Fang" fucking rules.

I said it once and I'll say it again:

Brody Tim Armstrong = Punk Rock
    Brody Josh Homme = Rock

Funny how the Distillers were so much similar to Rancid back then and are now so much similar to QOTSA and Hole nowadays...

"Tim is so talented, he could write about anything and still it would be great. Rancid is the best band around."
    -Brody Armstrong

"I've never been as much impressed than by Queen Of The Stone Age, they are so talented."
    -Brody Dale

Notice something similar?? Gimme a fucking break Brody!!

I'm undecided on this album. On one hand I like Brody's vocals more now then I did before... but I totally agree with this:

"the best word to describe the songs is anonymous. No matter how hard you try to absorb them it can’t be done"

I actually like the single. It's catchy. But the rest of the album I can't recall a single thing from.

I thought the single was kind of catchy. I want to have sex with Brody, I want to see her tits, and I wonder if she does anal. Last time I saw the Distillers I thought they were pretty good (opening for NOFX), and I thought it was funny Fat Mike made fun of Tim's voice on and off throughout NOFX's set...El Hefe apparently didnt appreciate it and claimed "I think Tim has a beautiful voice." Good times.

I loved the 1st record and stuck up for Brody and her band, through the different line-ups, since day one. The 2nd record had some rad tunes, but now, after the b.s. that's been going on, I can't do it. I don't care what happens to this band, solely because the lead singer/guitarist is such a low-down snake of a person. Yes we knew her, and we were completely blind-sided by her actions earlier this year. The b.s. she's pulling and the hurt she's inflicted is waaaay too familiar, and I'm not interested in supporting her.Hope her band members move on to a non-Courtney Love/trainwreck band. I don't care what she does from here personally or artistically.

Yeah, it was a major letdown, but after reading some interviews during the summer, I kind of expected half-assed boring shit on Coral Fang. I loved Sing Sing Death House, and liked the band's first album, but this is garbage that sounds like it should have been put out by one of those shitty Seattle bands 10 years ago. Ah well, good bands go to shit every day.

I really expected a lot from this release and sad to say I was kinda let down. Most of it is good, but there is no anger or aggression in this one like the past two had. I guess this album has more of a love lost/love gained theme running through out it.

I didn't like this album the first listen through. It really hit me after the 2nd listen. It's good, but I personally like Death House better. It's a bit slower in parts. They sound like Rancid/Nirvana/Hole all put together, which is fine, because those bands are responsible for the music I got into as a teenage in the early to mid 90's.
