To be honest, using terms like "metalcore","hardcore" and "indie" is pure journalistic laziness. I know it, but I do it because it gives people a useful jumping off point. It's difficult to start with the bare bones of music and try to explain what it sounds like to someone who has never heard it, so I use the crutch, and I am unapologetic. In this case, This is Love, This is Murderous definitely could be broken up into some sort of hybrid of those genre terms. I could definitely allude to it's metal leanings, and it's hardcore centre, and I suppose I just did. It might be useful to also mention some similar or influential artists. The most obvious of which are label mates' Eighteen Visions, who perfected, in my mind, the "hardcore kids playing metal" sound on The Best Of. And, of course, the vocal styling of Brandan Schieppati definitely bring to mind a the stylistic leanings of James Hart (Eighteen Visions) with his multi-faceted shriek, growl and singing which are employed in unequal measure throughout the twelve songs that make up This Is Love.... It's not entirely surprising that there is such a prevalent Eighteen Visions influence, what with their lineage tracing back to the aforementioned band as well as straight-edge stalwarts Throwdown. Of course, since I don't want to spend this review juxtaposing the band against their peers, I'll try and explain what stands out from the rest of the increasingly crowded heavy music space. The most striking and differentiating being the spooky keyboards which provide atmospherics for each of the tracks. I know "spooky" sounds like a goofy word in this context, but frankly, that is precisely what the keys add to the material. They rarely carry the melody or the rhythm of the song but nicely flush out the big, thick sound of the band. Even though the band clearly comes from a background in the hardcore scene, and other than the vocals and lyrics, this is pretty straight-forward metal fare. The strong European influence, complete with dueling, shredding guitars borrowed gently from At The Gates/In Flames playbook, and a strong emphasis on guttural, death-metal style growls. In many ways, the artwork sums up the band very appropriately; the image of a large knife stuck through a heart is romantically violent, dark and just a little cartoonish and so is Bleeding Through. This record will probably not revolutionize heavy music, nor will it gently introduce metalcore to the nay sayers, but it is an enjoyable, cathartic release. Please login or register to post comments. trustkill arent all bad This is an excellent album, although not as good as Portrait, it is still very good. I would like to add, everyone has their own opinions about music...don't say that Bleeding Through sucks just because you don't like their music. I don't like a lot of death metal. Does that mean it sucks? No. It just means that I don't enjoy listening to it. I do, however, enjoy listening to Bleeding Through, and this is indeed a very good album. I can't wait until The Truth is released. And Poison the Well are still on TrustKill. What you all probably know by now is that BrandAn, yes that is an A, not an O, Schieppati was in both Eighteen Visions and Throwdown, and that Bleeding Through are Straight Edge. You probably are unaware that Brandan was also in Incubus, way back when in 1993. I bought this album thinking of it as Hardcore, and still do. I've heard people call it European-influenced Death Metal, but I still imagine it to be hXc. But, I also don't care. I love the music. That is an actual pig heart with a steak knife driven through it. I am also a huge fan of fellow OC-core bands Avenged Sevenfold and Atreyu. The only difference between emo and hardcore, in my book, is the actual sound. The lyrics are exactly the same, anymore. Fuck this whole "fashioncore must die" attitude, we need to simply stop factioning off music. It's retarded. Back in the day when I listened to System of a Down, they were "Alternative Rock," now it's fucking Nü-Metal. What bullshit is that? The music industry is so insanely genre-actioned and stylized that it's sickeneing. Music is still great, but actually thinking about it makes one's brain want to kill itself. I actually found a stolen riff from Bleeding Through's "Dust to Ashes" EP. The first track, "Turns Cold to the Touch," begins with another audio clip from The Boondock Saints, and starts out with a nice lead immediately afterwards. The riff used to begin the actual song portion is almost exactly duplicated in The Black Dahlia Murder's The Blackest Incarnation." I love both bands, just pointing it out. I prefer the previous album, but this is better than the first. Pretty good for big dumb metal, this is what I listen to when I want to headbang. yea i like portrait of a goddess way more. i still like this cd. fucking cheesy artwork though. bleeding through's back catalogue is much better. i did know brandon was in eighteen visions but didn't know he was in throwdown too. what albums was he on in throwdown? F.Y.I the lead singer use to be the guitarist for Throwdown and 18 visions before he fronted Bleeding Through. This is the reason why people think this band is a 18 visions rip-off First off the keyboardist, whom I believe her name is Martha, is fucking hot. Getting to the topic, Bleeding Through is pretty solid band with some Swedish influence in their music. I could care less if their music is called "hardcore", "tatecore", or straight up metal these guys (and girl) could tear up the fucking house. Flaws are pretty small. The vocalist, while having better growls and roars than the lead singer of 18 visions, doesn't have a sense of melody. Though he tries, it's not strong enough to carry the song and his roaring and growling can get somewhat repetitive. The guitars though are the bands strong point. The two pronged attack is pretty badass. The drums are basic double-bass drumming. The keyboards a bring a symponic sound to the music(ala Mushroomhead) . Other than that I hope this band can get out of the light that their nothing but an 18 visions rip-off that alot of the hardcore crowd titles them. In my opinion, their are stronger band with better guitars, a better vocalist, and a bad-ass (and HOT!!!)keyboardist (though the drumming is pretty equal, but the slight edge to BT's drummer). Those into any kind of "-core" or metal, buy this CD. Those who bitch that nothing can touch 18 visions, then dont buy this, it just leads to more bitching. this is not hardcore its just metal shit To the asshole, who said hardcore is getting you no where. Fuck off and die. I want you to name 5 fucking hardcore bands. Not metalcore either straight up fucking hardcore bitch. And by the way I am doing just fine in school. 1/3log(2x 1) 1/2[log(x-4)-log(x^4-x^2-1)] = I like Bleeding Through ... but Portrait is a much better album hey here's an original concept. lets play our insturments really fast. lets have the recording sound as brutal as possible so that people will think we're some serious shit. then lets wear super tight clothes and eye makeup and sing about... absolutely nothing except girls and lame shit like killing people who suck (in our opinion). then we can sell this shit to people by labeling it as "hardcore" or "metal." buy a fucking bane album or some fucking sick of it all or even better some fucking bad religion. these are bands that actually are motivated to give something back, play with passion emotion. or, you could just get some nautical stars tattooed on your arm next that fucking sweet crimson ghost skull with the coi fish around it and the profound statement from yesterday's shitty metalcore band like "Underoath." yeah then you'd be cool enough to paint your nails black and call yourself hardcore. FOAD. "this band isa no good" i would prefer an album cover with doves and stars on the front This c.d. is boring.. It's more of the same... They haven't gotten better. They haven't gotten worse.. It's just the same shit... Shit on this c.d. and it's generic artwork.... by the way to the guy who said avenged sevenfold is better is a jackass.. Avenged Sevenfold is the shittiest band around.. They don't know how to write good metal songs. they do good guitar and vocal harmony's but their songs as a whole suck.. fuck you seriously this band isa no good To the dude who keeps makin the review comments....good gimmick. Now make a user name. i'm suprised you didn't mention the lyrics, even though this was a very good release, some of the lyrics are pretty ridiculious.... but not all... This review was good, but here's how I would make it better: "you say they sound a lot like 18 visions.....aren't some members of 18 visions in this band?" im not talking shit about trustkill just stating the fact that most of the tk bands dont spend enough time on new material they rush their releases prime example poison the well and yes i know the are no longer on tk this cd is very good. matching all of the components of the band. who gives a shit about the insert. i think the insert is very good. it holds well with the cd. ryan wilson is fucking hot. dont talk shit about trustkill. first of all if you are going to talk about the relation of this band to 18v i hope you know the singer use to play guitar for them. personally i think this cd was good, but not nearly as good as previous releases from them. The vocals are over done and not enough time spent on the music. Its suffers from the same flaws as most tk bands it was just made to fast. "Students Report In 11:05:39 PM Hell Core/Jesus Fest? why did I not coin that one? And more importantly, why was I not in attendance? the best thing about that mp3 is that it has a quote from "the boondock saints", one of the best movies ever. Yes. That Jason Tate. Who else would like a picture with a knife through a heart? Why, only a man that thinks Blink-182 is the most inspirational band on earth could ever call that clever! hence- tatecore. tatecore = Jason Tate? webmaster for absolutepunk.net? this band is overdone and boring. yeah tere guitar players can shred but the singer doesnt even have the proper rythmn to sing along. worhtless. I know that The Best Of was re-recorded material from their older material, I still think it was unbelievably good. Haha, The Best Of was a collection old 7 inches with one new song. That was the height of hardcore kids playing metal? Spare me. please define tatecore. I'm at a loss. I act tough but Im really not. Yeah I have ear-rings and tatoos...yet i act sensitive...but its just to get girls. Im a joke basically, and I do know how stupid i look in my girly tight T and dirty jeans. I know how pretentious I sound when I talk about things I know nothing about like politics and Edgar Allen Poe. I make fun of ska and street punk beacuse its not fashionable, yet those bands are the reason I found out about all my crybaby talent-challenged bands that I listen to. Yes I know all these bands are also in it just for personal gain and care nothing for music. Yes i know they all pretend to listen to and understand Radiohead, as listed on thier website bios. I try not to think about what the future will hold, though I know ill soon be on to the next fad. Its sad really.....maybe emo can outlast the fate of hair-metal and Ill keep hoping that a musical revolution doesnt happen anytime soon. I mean things are different...Just look at Justin Timberlake, He knew N'sync was destin to fail and he defied the odds. Maybe all my favorite bands will learn from the past too and soemhow prolong this fad of crappy music from well dressed pussies. GingerBread-Cadence totaly blew these guys off the stage at Hell-core Jesus Fest last year. That album cover is so tatecore it hurts. I like this album, I just don't listen to at as much as I did when I first bought it! Boondock Saints is the greatest movie and that's all that matters. why did u fucking compare this band to 18v? BT is far better and far different from the shit 18v produces...fuck this review...this score goes to the cd, but this fuck is fucking fucked, fuck. looks like they stabbed a giant turd on their cover "This stuff has very little to do with real hardcore. There are now officially about a million bands like this. They are decent, but they tour with the million "screamo" bands who are terrible." This stuff has very little to do with real hardcore. There are now officially about a million bands like this. They are decent, but they tour with the million "screamo" bands who are terrible. HAHAHAHA A band finally put an album cover with a knife in a heart! the cover art sucks. that knife isn't even convincing. i just can't take bands like this. they are good at what they do, but the way they parade themselves as hardcore (which they did when i saw them) and the way they all shit-talk their former bands... blah. fashioncore needs to die. you say they sound a lot like 18 visions.....aren't some members of 18 visions in this band? Not a bad album, but the artwork killed it. The pretty boy on the inside embracing the model-esque looking chick.....uber-whack. |
