Ok kids. Gather round, because Uncle Patrick has another story to tell. Heh, no, it’s not an Arthur story. Oh, STOP CRYING! It’s nothing like that; it’s a story about a boy, a boy who in grade eight liked a band called Blink 182. Ah, yes, you kids remember them, the band that everyone loved, three crazy kids running around in the buff, terrorizing the town, and singing about girls and love. My, we said, they’re singing about what we’re going through! The age difference of a good 10-15 years, of course, did not come into question.

Well Blink 182, let me tell you something, I’m not that same 13 year old boy anymore, and surely to god you can evolve a bit! Oh, don’t tell me that by making the guitar riffs a bit sadder and the lyrics a bit more personal that you can win me over, because you can’t. Case in point: Mark sings about fights he had with his mom, please, how ridiculous is it to have a thirty year old man singing about conflicts he had with his mom when he was twelve. The mental image I get is a grown man yelling at his mother and running up to his room in tears. But, I digress.

The new album from the kings of TRL pop punk really exposes how shallow the band is. Some argue that this was done after they went mainstream, but at least with Enema of the State, and Take off Your Pants and Jacket (get it?), it was new and unexplored for the masses who had not heard such a band, and surely not one that is as popular as Blink is; but this? This is just simple, uninspired, whiny, and frankly pathetic.

The astoundingly lame lyrics come out in full force in the song ‘Down’. “Pick me up now I need you so bad (Mark proceeds to say ‘down’ 40 times, I counted)/it makes me so/your vows of silence fall all over/the look in your eyes makes me crazy/I feel the darkness break upon her”.

Profound.

Faster songs like Stockholm Syndrome make for a better listen, but you just can’t overlook lyrics like “I wish I could explain myself/my words escape me/it’s too late to save me/you’re too late”. I mean c’mon, he rhymed me with me, but unfortunately it’s songs of that calibre that save the album from being utter crap.

Blink is simply riding on the coattails of the emo fad, and riding it straight through the doors of MTV offices. It’s all just too blatant and forced to be enjoyed. Musically, this album is not horrid, but it’s still just more of the same Blink formula. Lyrically, this album is drivel. Sadly though, what do they care what I think? This album is going to sell more copies then your Mom’s brownies at a bake sale, so why bother. It may suck, but it’s just what the pre-pubescents are looking for. Well, maybe this wasn’t a total waste of time. I can always make some copies and sell it outside the elementary school.

i cant understand that anyone gives a shit about this band still. Blink 182 is a band that you like when you're in your early teen years. Anyone who likes blink 182 and who is over 15 years old is a mystery for me

I love how in the pop world, "maturing" means going from writing happy love songs to writing sad love songs. Blink-182 fucking suck.

Ok I admit it I bought this album for Marks sick bass lines and Travis's sick druming. Wow, what I got wer great songs that not only Pre-Puberty girls and gay boys can like. (lol who ever wrote that comment is like 10 and had to have his big brother type this for him,
what a loser) Ok so they have grown up a bit and the rest of the 9-10 year olds are to dumb and ignorent to listen to any thing but the curses and they arent to happy about only 7 curses ( you are a moronic monkey slipnot/limpbiscut fan if you think so). This album is very catchy and can be for anyone. Its a guilty pleasure for me.

you people are dumb i wrote the review below and by reading some of the shit you guys wrote. Blinks freakin awesome and this record took a darker side cuase thats what they have come up with not that they matured there music did. The video Feeling This points that out god. Dude Ranch was a very great album and then they came out with enima of the state and it got big it is a great album and now they want to try to go in a different pace.

Oooh, this CD sucks, yea they matured, but the lyrical content is horrendous, every single song line is about girls, at least add some songs about poop and people's mothers, like they used to. I agree, right outta MTV's offices for sure. But yeah, the CD has sold like a billion copies, I bet if you could track down all the people who bought it, they would be all under-16 years old, morbidly obese, sweaty girls.

Alright, first of all...teens and pre-pubescents don't even listen to Blink anymore. It's not "cool enough". They're all into the hardcore stupid crap like Atreyu and Poison the Well and all that sh!t. More and more people are getting back into Blink because they're realizing that this band actually has talent and potential, and they're not just a fad. No one likes Blink anymore. The people that do are stronger for it. Blink really has matured with this album, and while I don't know if that's a good thing, the cd certainly has it's charm. Travis is as strong as ever, and Mark and Tom do an excellent job of conveying real emotion and not just lyrics written to make money. There was nothing wrong with Enema, nor was there anything wrong with Take Off Your Pants And Jacket. In fact, I prefer those two albums to this one. And as for Boxcar Racer, you have to admit, they had some pretty damn good songs. While the album wasn't as consistent as it should have been, songs like "Letters To God", "Tiny Voices", and "There Is" were some of the most mature songs Tom has ever written. Anyway, I'm done, but I have one more thing to say. Travis Barker a.k.a. Baron Von Tito, is a GOD.

This reviewer sucks cocks for money. How can u write such a shitty review about a band who have obviously matured and made a great sounding album, experimenting with previous sounds. I am not the biggest blink fan in the world but this album has opened up new doors for them and if it was all about getting on TRL surely they would have used their older sounds that everyone liked? Blink weren't even sure if their fans would like their newest effort.

somebody down there claimed the ramones were shitty, even though they were "first". it's kinda dumb that we're still having the "who's first" argument here. i don't mind the ramones, they're not too bad, and even though I'm an American and we're supposed to be all about the Ramones when it comes to punk rock, there's just way too much evidence that the sex pistols played before the ramones... i think the ramones are a better band, but they didn't really have that punk feel to their songs. they weren't rebelling anything. they had 5 songs that they repeated over 97 albums... the sex pistols made one shitty album and some weird bootleg albums and called it quits.. the fact is that punk wasn't really started by either of these bands. the need to break from of societal restraints has been an ever increasing movement for a long long time... and its geting more and more so. its a continuous process. i wouldn't give credit to anyone person or band.

i respect these guys for trying to evolve, but they just don't have the talent to be the band i can hear them trying to be. it just sounds like a more thought out box car racer. as a drummer myself, i can be entertained just listening to travis' drumming, but thats not really enough ya know.mark and tom are average at their instruments and lyric writing. their strong suit was humor and catchy pop song writing, but if they kept w/ that it mightve been even more watered down. so basically, they sh ould just break up. their millionairs and family men now, stay at home guys. good try though. sounds like mark didnt write much of anything for this album anyway except "go" which has a nice alkaline trio outro. "obvious" is "all system go" from box car.

best songs "violence" "feeling this" (haha yes i do) "always" and i guess "i miss you". "stolkhom syndrome" was a nice try. the rest of the album is either boring crap or box car outtakes. robert smith song is not good, whatever its called. i'll go listen to the cure instead.

But if that was the point, why did they take the Pistols' single off the top of the charts? If the Sex Pistols were guilty of that, then the Clash were more so... And what about every other punk band? Indies either had horrible distro or were part of majors back then... The point of most bands used to be to spread your music, not to keep every good band in the underground "scene" like today... And the band had been around since 1975. Just quit trying to argue and shut up with your idiotic modern comparisons to NWA and Public Enemy.

Wow mine's on Marx and Engels' critism of the 19th century French Utopian Socialists, yet how M & E's proposals and written works - their blueprints for a communist society, if you will - are, in fact, quite idealistic in their own right although they claimed their ideas to be purely "scientific" and realistic.

About the whole John Lennon thing I explained a couple of messaged later what I met with that. So no need to explain that to you.

And about the whole money thing, you wrote about ten sentences and lots of big words, but it all comes down to same shit. What's really uour point? What do you care if they sell crappy music? Just as long as you don't pay for it. If a 4 year old wants to pay 20 Bucks for the CD, then so be it. Good for Blink. Too bad for us. But that's the way of life, there are some people lucky enough to earn tons of money for making music or selling image as you would say and there are people who would spend some hours checking out website and posting messages in Forum, like you and me!
The part that really upsets me is that you people start bashing the band and their fans for nothing at all. If you don't like the band, fine. No problem I wouldn't judge you cause everyone has their taste. But not you "hard-core" guys, you guys must bash at evryone that loves blink. I'm a blink fan, I admit it. But I listen to lots of other bands too, and must say blink isn't nearly as talented as the other bands.

And you claim that I am the 4 year old huh? Well I'm not the one getting all upset because some band makes millions by selling their music. You just sound like a baby,"Blink makes millions, they suck." I mean come on, be real man. You can't just post a normal post. And when people start bashing at you for posting non sense, you get all upset. "Everybody's wrong sometimes", that's what you wrote. But apparently you're not doing it yourself. You guys keep telling everyone Punk is Dead. No, punk is not dead yet! But with the stupid comments and stupid mentallity that you guys have you will kill Punk for sure. And you're a musician yourself, so that's what makes it more sad. You're wrecking your own music scene.Change man, it's time for a change. Find a way to address people in a better way and respect each others opinions.

Oh yeah about my parents. They have raised me pretty well. And I will also raise my children, the way I was raised, to respect other peoples opinion. And I do have a good understanding of the world and that's why I have pitty for folks like yourself, who don't have respect for each other and just try to ruin the world for other persons. It's just a shame. I hope you really get the point I'm trying to make. You sound like a very nice guy, if you could just change the way you think and stop talking non sense.
Also I would love to hear about your band, do you have a link where I can check your band out?

Danny Carey is one of the greatest drummers in existance today, even if you don't like Tool. Travis Barker's solidity isn't under question.. Most drummers in professional bands are solid. Dave Grohl is fucking solid, but few people are saying he's an excellent drummer. To compare any of those guys with Danny Carey is ridiculous (maybe you've never heard him, I don't know) but if you ever saw him play live, or attended one of his drum clinics, you'd say that he in fact reigns supreme over most drummers. I can't say that there aren't better drummers out there, but I haven't heard them if there are.

    My Score:

Alright kids, lets calm down. Funkisdead and the anonymous posters both have points (as is the case with most arguments that aren't immediately dropped).

I know guys who have went to university and obtained masters in music composition and performance. These people I know tend to like free-jazz and classical music more than anything else, but I have talked to several of them about punk rock and metal and though generally they find the genres less interesting, that is only the rule and they admit certain exceptions of bands do break it.

To be fair, punk rockers can be extremely skilled and knowledgeable musicians (yes, they CAN be musicians). But to be even more fair, the BEST musicians are not playing punk rock. The best (the ones who wrote/are writing the ever-changing music methods and curriculums) are hardly (never?) caught playing 4 chords with their guitars/pianos/whatever when they can be challenging themselves with an interesting polyrhythm, melodic modulation idea, etc. -- it would be like you guys looking at last month's porn mag when a fresh one just came in the mail, the former is boring.

In conclusion, both sides have valid points, but no one (even you, funkisdead) has any ground saying the best musicians are punkers. They are musicians, but they are far from the best (I mean FAR)... when they aren't too far, they probably won't be too punk anymore... but you guys will write it off probably as selling out rather than someone's musical skill outgrowing the framework of punk rock.

That's my two cents... chances are someone's gonna argue, but it doesn't bother me because they will be wrong.

MUSICIANS play in jazz bands, orchestras or other like-minded ensembles. I dont care what you say, you don't spend years on a music education to play a 4/4 beat with 3 or 4 chords. YOU DO NOT. You are such a stupid fucking poopy face.

I, for one, am heading to Boston in January to study jazz guitar at the Berklee College of Music. I don't listen to jazz because I'm into it, I listen to it so that I can have a unique approach to fucking "punk rock" songwriting. I want to be a musician who plays punk rock. Contrary to what your comment suggest, I am definitely not the only person who feels the same way.

"The greats," as you so eloquently fucking call them, incorporate all sorts of influences to create something all their own. Something innovative. Stephen Edgerton from ALL, for example, listens to lots of Mahavishnu Orchestra shit, and it shows in his crazy single-note runs.

Plenty of jazz musicians have great chops, but that doesn't mean their licks sound musical. Plenty of other music is just sheer ego masturbation... Chops are attained through practice. Once you can play, you just fucking practice until you're as fast as you want to be. Once you learn the theory of music, you just apply it in ways that are pleasing to your ear as a musician.

Musicians do whatever the fuck they want to do, as directed by their musical tastes. If a song needs three chords, then they play three fucking chords. If the musician feels the song needs modal interchange and all sorts of fucked up whole-tone soloing, then that is exactly what he does.

It is not a question of skill, it is a question of style. You are comparing mangos and goats, and that just makes no fucking sense.

Saying that "you are a dumbass if you listen to punk because of the musicianship" is ignorant, naive, shallow, and fucking stupid. You're underestimating the sheer size of the genre. Red Animal War, just as a quick example, could fucking play all the way around your ridiculously pancake flat ass fucking seven times before you had the slightest clue as to what key they were playing in.

Your comment shows that you just don't know shit about music. If you think there aren't any punk bands that can fucking play their instruments, you are just not looking hard enough.

fuck you, you silly silly git.

The only bigger dumbasses (*funkisdead*) will try to argue how some bands in the punk rock spectrum are actually brimming with musical knowledge... this is not the case.

MUSICIANS (and please understand, a guitar player in punk band X is not a musician, just someone who knows enough to work his way around a fretboard) do not bother themselves with punk rock, metal, pop, ska, rock and roll, etc. It would be no different from all of you going back to grade 1 and doing the work assigned there -- its a waste of your time and knowledge. MUSICIANS play in jazz bands, orchestras or other like-minded ensembles. I dont care what you say, you don't spend years on a music education to play a 4/4 beat with 3 or 4 chords. YOU DO NOT. The only good thing about punk rock is not the music, its the scene, the attitude, the... oh wait a minute, nowadays punk rock sucks balls. Nevermind.

    Best Punk and Hardcore Drummers:

    -Dave Witte (Discordance Axis)
    -Matt Martin (Capitalist Casualties)
    -Jord (Propagandhi)
    -Oshima (Melt banana)
-Lil' Albert (Hellnation, cause he sings and plays blastbeats at the same time)
-honorable mentions: Max Ward (SPAZZ), Emu (Yacopsae), Max Weinberg (Conan O'brien), The guys from HeWhoCorrupts, Dillinger Escape Plan, Pig Destroyer, Nile, The Red Chord...Sean Sellers was pretty good too.

From everything I've heard by Blink, the drumming is rock freaking solid. I hate this band with a passion, but he is pretty good.

WHO FUCKIN CARES. its called growing up asshole, everybody does it, and if you are still crying about it at 30 years old, you are a pussy and immature. which is exactly what blink 182 is. 30 year old immature pussies trying to act deep now because nobody laughs at their fart jokes anymore.

Some highly intelligent 4 year old posted:

"Dude, nobody cares what you think.
Just go back to your basement and whack of. Or go get laid.
And let's all just ignore the fact that you claim you write better music then Blink. For god's sake who are you John Lennon? Grow up Man.
Blink is in it for the money. Yeah right as if you would turn down money to play. But hey you're "rock star" to be right? So maybe after a couple of years you'll change your mind when we see you rocking on MTV. (Sarcasm)
And the whole selling out thing is just as old and lame as Vanilla Ice. So just drop it and do us all a big favor, drop dead!"

Why I would want to respond to this is is beyond me, but I'm really bored.

First off, somehow you think that John Lennon is the only person to write better than Blink 182. Tells us how much you idolize Blink 182. Shows how much shit you have on your mental shelf. You've clearly not experienced any music besides blink 182, otherwise you'd grasp the concept of "better". There's a pretty big gap between Blink 182 and John Lennon, and its not bragging to say I'm somewhere in that gap. Their songwriting skills are ultra weak. You'd think they'd advance their skills after so many albums, but why would they when they get paid to make shitty music.

Next, there's a big fucking difference between getting paid for a job and being "in it for the money"... Obviously people need a certain amount of money to live, but you should be skinned alive if that is ever higher up than the art you create (such as blink 182)..... money isn't evil. it's all how you get the money. these assholes earn money by performing sub-standard music to children who were molded by the industry to like it. a real musician doesn't need to justify himself by appearing on mtv in order to sell more records, since that is the sole reason a band would be on mtv. i'm not against televised music, but i certainly wouldn't be associated with a company that sells image, rather than music.

As far as doing you all a favor and dropping dead, I'm pretty sure you don't have the right to speak for anybody but yourself. Strangely thats how life works. Sorry to hear that your primate brain hasn't come to that conclusion yet. A guy, such as yourself, who can barely form complete sentences really shouldn't pretend to argue with those that have clearly put thought into the subject. Only argue if you got a logical point. Everybody's wrong sometimes, but there isn't any point in arguing if you have no actual stance. If your stance is that I suck, you haven't got a stance. It's pretty damn juvenile. I'm not sure how all of you children think getting laid is the one true answer for solving life's problems. Unfortunately, since you know nothing about me, saying I need to get laid is just an example of you having nothing good to say and reverting to childish comments, from your limited 3k database of weak insults.

Since the rest of your post had no basis in reality, I'm not going to comment on it. I feel bad for your parents. I hope they're good and decent folk. It's too bad they couldn't have raised you any better. I wish you could have a better understanding of the world, as it would probably help you get friends and lead a more fulfilling life. Good Journey.

If you like old fashioned rock n roll, you'll like the Ramones. If you like pop rock (basically punk with really clean sound and no edge), classic rock, or prog, you won't. If you like classic rock or prog, fuck off. You suck.

You know what, I think this is my favorite review yet on this site. Is it informative? No. Did it sway my opinon of Blink? No. Was it funny? No. However, it shows one of the reasons people, including myself, frequent this site. Here is a another example of a non-professional review that is just some kid's idea; no one gets paid to write them, no one studies this music, and no one has been told how to write an effective review. It is "ilikebandssuchasopivy"'s opinon. You knew that when you clicked the link to the review! What the fuck is it that makes you mad when you see him vent or express disdain. There are thousands of punk sites on the net and nearly everyone will have a review of this album. If you really cared for a strong idea of the album you would read a couple of them and make your own decision.
I enjoy this site because it lets me know about upcoming releases/tours/etc. (i.e. the news part). The reviews are pretty much the same as the talkbalk except slightly more moderated. Who cares what this review said? Reviews like this enchance the enjoyment of the site because they provide something for all of us to chew on, and as is often the case, to talk shit on people/bands/scenes. This angers some people but no one forced you to read someone's inflammatory comments or reviews. What makes this site work is that people contribute their own ideas no matter how crass, inane, or pointless. This site is fun because it allows for interaction without the guilt of saying things directly to someone. That is why I love this site, these people, and this review.

Just cause they don't doesn't mean they can't. It's not much harder, it just doesn't sound as good in most modern music so they don't do it. Stop whining about it, you probably wouldn't even notice if they did. This rating is for all the brain-dead listeners who think they know what musical knowledge and talent is. My Score:

The drummers from Faraquet, Hot Water Music and Fugazi are both jazz-influenced, trained, educated musicians. The drummer from Death Cab For Cutie is fantastic.

Plenty of "punk rock" bands work in odd time signatures. Especially underground bands working under the "emo" and "indie" tags.

I didn't namedrop Faraquet for any sort of "punk points." Making that argument is bullshit. They are a jazz influenced band, and their drummer is fucking brilliant. If you had heard the band before you opened your mouth, you wouldn't sound like a whiny little whore.

I agree that jazz and latin drumming are great. I think I said that in my first post. But I don't see how you can say that a drummer with a diverse background is automatically inferior to a jazz, or latin, drummer.

I think that, musically speaking, punk drummers work to support a song, while straight jazz drummers have a wider soundscape to cover. They can just go off, but punk rock is musical, not based on wild improvisation.

Advice: Don't fucking call me a dumbass, because you sound like a lonely, scared little girl.

And to that first kid... yes, I think i will go get "layed." Morons.

"That's also not saying that punk drumming is simple... Check Hot Water Music, Fugazi, Faraquet, Q and Not U, Death Cab For Cutie, or even fucking Lagwagon for flawlessly executed "punk rock" drumming."

I'm not familiar with faraquet or death cab (damn, I guess there goes my punk points), but please, don't namedrop bands like hwm and lagwagon to win an argument on drumming. a drummer with chops is not a drummer with musical knowledge. as for the 2/4 comment, i agree he was wrong on that, but it brings us to another point -- why can't punk drummers bring themselves to deviate from 4/4? (6/8 and 3/4 occur occasionaly but no complex time really does, and please don't throw around thrice as an example of a mathy band because apart from a few cases of 5/4 all their "funky times" fit into 8/8 or 6/8 just with the accents on beats different from the norm -- nothing too impressive.

to conclude, funkisdead is a dumbass. jazz drumming is where it is at, as well as latin beats. cascaras, son and rhumba claves are much more interesting than ONEtwoTHREEfourONEtwoTHREEfourTRITEDRUMFILLONTOMS.

Travis is a flashy drummer, who enhances the otherwise cliche sound of the band. I challenge the drummers in Good Charlotte, Homegrown, New Found Glory, Simple Plan, and the Startling Line to cop any of his beats... They just can't. I'm not defending the band, but Travis can fucking rock the set in a manner that is more than appropriate to the music.

That's also not saying that punk drumming is simple... Check Hot Water Music, Fugazi, Faraquet, Q and Not U, Death Cab For Cutie, or even fucking Lagwagon for flawlessly executed "punk rock" drumming.

The best drummers are not jazz drummers, their shit gets to esoteric and meandering. The best drummers can cull influences from across the board... ideally merging jazz technique, punk rock energy, and then elements from hip hop/drum & bass... whatever.

also, punk rock drumming is rarely in 2/4. this score is for sugar daddys lollipops.

    My Score:

I don't know if this has been said and I don't really care if it has: TRAVIS IS NOT A GREAT DRUMMER. Some of you will probably disagree with me, so allow myself to clarify, he is not a great drummer, but he is a great PUNK drummer. He's got chops, he's got dexterity, but he's no Erskine or Theodore or any of the true artist drummers. Travis knows what a paradiddle is, he can play at top speeds and sure, he doesn't stick to a bass/snare alternating 2/4 beat like that whole slew of punk drummers... but he's not that good.

Want good drumming (or good music for that matter)? Listen to some latin music and jazz. Those styles have the best of the best, you can be challenged to think of melody and rhythmic modulation, several polyrhythms all happening at once, great improvisation, funky time signatures and so much more. Oh yeah, the latin/jazz cultures also don't have a whole bunch of kids (and even worse, 20-somethings and older arguing with kids) about Blink182 subject matter.

Don't think you are all music experts because you listen to "punk" whereas everyone else is listening to Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake -- the music is in essence the same, save the absence of distortion and snotty vocals. You are all losers, get lives.

So that's what Blink does, they work (play their music around the world) and they get paid. But no, there's always some loser somewhere always to talk about the whole sellout shit.
But do you know what I think is more pathetic about the whole sell out shit? That these "fans" I'm sorry "Hardcore Punk Fans" are all on their own. Hahaha poor bastard. All of the bands are getting tired of this whole bullshit. The bands try to support each other and these fans think they're cool for calling Blink etc.. sell outs. So sad, I think probably the day they will stop is when the bands that they love will them this "Listen up pathetic Fans! We don't even care about the whole punk or not, Sell outs or not thing. Just drop dead!" That will make those fans so miserable cause their lives are completely gone. The main reason they lived for is dead. No one really cares no more! No!! Now they'll just have to please us and the rest of the world and just shoot themself or just swallow pills.
PS. It is true you guys need to get laid. Go pay a hooker or something.

Oh, and I must add. Though I am not a fan of Good Charlotte, you have called them sellouts. Of all bands, Good Charlotte? It has been as possible for them to sellout as it has for Celin Deon. We are taking about a band that's first label was a major label, that immediately had a major label video to pitch to MTV, and immediately began headlining tours on buses, fueled by the marketing support of the major label.

"Anyone who thinks Blink 182 isn't in it for money is a fucking tool.

Just look at their track record; appearances on major film soundtracks, sponsorships by major corporations, only selecting slow songs for their videos. Blink 182 are almost as bad as Good Charlotte in the sell-out department."

It's interesting that you are quick to call others "tools", though you are the one subjected to proclaiming information based on no credible merit, just for the sake of spreading a horribly uninformed and petty point.

a)As for appearing in major film soundtracks, let's not forget that bands are composed of individuals. Individuals, who perhaps like you or I (depending on your prefences), happen to enjoy things. Like movies. And perhaps they wanted to be a part of these things they happen to like. A weak argument, but the Clash's music has appeared in different soundtracks of major motion pictures as well as major television ads.

b)Sponserships by major corporations... Such as? Companies that can provide the band deals with the tools they use to perform? Such as Fender, Gibson, and Mesa Boogie? Give me a break. The only other sponsership that exists with the band include clothing. The drummer gets free shoes from DC Shoe Company. The band used to get free clothing from Hurley International (who yes, has since been purchased in part by Nike, however the band is no longer sponsered by this company now). That's about it.

c)Only selecting slow songs for their singles: Yes, for every release the band has only selected slow songs. Slow songs such as M&Ms (Cheshire Cat), Dammit, Josie (Dude Ranch), What's My Age Again, All The Small Things (Enema of The state), the Rock Show, First date (Take Off Your Pants and Jacket), Feeling This (Untitled). Give me a fucking break.

And in terms of the world sellout - the band never had anything to sell out. Even if you find them to be a ridiculous pop band today, then by that logic they were a ridiculous pop band from day one.

And yes, I realize I am equally sily for typing so much about a topic hardly worth my time. I just have no life!

I'm not sure how/if you can justify this statement. I mean, you could make a good argument for it, and I could make a good argument against it, but neither of us can prove it either way, since I'm not a personal friend of the band, and somehow I doubt you are either. I mean, let's face reality. We don't know the mindset of these guys, and you can't say Tom, Mark and Travis are thinking "Gee, lets write this song because it will make us money." Nor can I say that they're thinking the opposite. But from what I gather, by reading interviews and such, I would go as far as to say Travis was born to be in a band, and Tom likes making music. But hey, again, I don't know better than you would, so lets both not make broad statements anymore.

i've been hearing a lot of idiot blink fans saying something similar to this "well if you're so badass, how come you aren't making music." or "i'd like to see you write something better" or "maybe if you tried writing music, you'd see its not so easy"....
i hate how fucking narrow minded some of you can be...you automatically assume that nobody here is a musician... unfortunately, there is music outside of blink 182.. yeah, there are worse bands than blink 182, but i feel if you can't write good lyrics and you can't write good music, you suck.. thats the way it is.. some of you are saying stuff like "so what if the lyrics aren't the best.. lyrics aren't everything".... correct.. lyrics aren't everything.. they're only part of equation.. but if blink 182 plays C G A F one more fucking time, i'm going to kill somebody... realistically, there are still people out there that care about punk, because it had such a huge impact on their lives.. its a sacred thing to some people, and they hate seeing it trampled into the mud by some assholes out to make money. blink 182 are clearly in it for the money, whether you like them or not. i'm not even a blink hater, but i can at least be realistic about it. these guys are sponsored by clothing companies, for one.. thats just one way they've sold out.. and even if their music is "pure" and untainted by that selling out, who cares if its mediocre.. blink 182 is nothing fancy. i'm not musical god, for sure, but if i can write better stuff than these guys after having only 5 years of experience, then something must be wrong. i refuse to believe that i am THAT badass. i haven't heard this whole album, so i can't give an accurate review of it as a whole, but the 3 songs i've heard all sound the same.. they made me angry.. i was okay with everything up through EOTS, but all this new stuff i'm hearing is bad.

    Two Comments;

Blink aren't really riding the coat tails of the emo fad because they started the emo fad in punk. They picked Mark Trombino to produce Dude Ranch because they were huge fans of Jimmy Eat World's Static Prevails (as they stated in an MTV interview in 97, way before I'm sure 99.9% of the readers of this site heard of that band)and have progressivly been putting those influences into thier music ever since. And remember the song "emo" from said album.

    Second comment;
"Go" isn't about Mark having a childlike fight with his mother or however you summed it up. The song is about him and his mom trying to escape his abusive father when he was 10 and his mom being too affraid to run away.

So I hope you feel awesome for writing such an inciteful review and I can't wait to hear you declare that MxPx are trying to rip off Good Charlotte.

Ok guys, everyone just shut the fuck up. We're talking about blink 182 here, for christ's sake. By now you know if you like them or you not. I bet that won't change any time soon.

Arguing over this bullshit is a guaranteed way to earn yourself a position on the punknews.org "Least Respected, Biggest Dipshit Chart." Trust me, it exists. I think I'm on it too, but that's beside the point.

I admit to participating in the "punk/not punk" debate from time to time, and the "emo/not emo" debate too. With a band like this, however, those debates are null and void. They don't apply. Blink 182 is just a band with punk rock roots. They could ditch their guitars and make a tribute to Yanni, played exclusively on a Moog, and it would still be grounds for coverage on this site.

Something doesn't need to be easily pigeon-holed to make it worth your while.

Also, if you don't want to look like a complete, absolute moron, I would strongly recommend that you never, ever, ever, say that "the scene is fucking dead," or any paraphrasing thereof. It makes me mad. It clearly is not dead, this site is around. There are still punk bands. There is still a DIY network of concert promotion that stretches across the entire world. You just sound like a cynical, moronic douche who knows 0 about the underground music community. You are just spouting trivialities... catch phrases... catharsis for the collective rejection of your musical tastes.

    Ok, in sum:
    1) Blink 182 is Blink 182/Love them or hate them.
    a) Either way, no one cares except you.

    2) Punk IS alive.
    a) Saying otherwise exposes your ignorance.
    b) No amount of saying "punk is dead" or "this scene is dead" will earn you anything but a swift kick to the groin.

    3) I am scrumtrillescent.

perhaps the blink fans think all the blink records are good(i love opinions). Yes there are alot of good bands out there but they are also different bands...just because there is other good music dosent mean this is bad...judge the music on the music and not the scene........... try judging this cd agaist other blink cd's instead of cursive or murder by death or the shins...as far as I knwo those are all very different bands.

Not the best album in the world, but certainly not a horrible album... It doesn't really compare to Cheshire Cat or Dude Ranch, but it's definitely a step back into the right direction.

Why the hell are there two reviews of this CD? Just seems stupid to me... One is enough!

And this review sucked. Only lot's of whining all the time, no objective look at the album. Seems like punknews.org lets any crappy reviewer write whatever they want to. A good reviewer always looks at the both sides of a record. Seems to me that this guy hated the record just because the "real punks" are supposed to hate blink... that's so lame.

    Hey janelle...you think YOU'RE old?

I teach drum lessons to middle school kids, and Whenever I'm trying to teach a new type of rhythm, i use real life examples of it. Anyway, one of my examples was the drum intro from Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". I had 4 different kids ask me who Nirvana was. Then they tell me "I was born in 1990!"

bam! All my hair just fell out. Unbelievable!

    1. Which band member is the cover supposed to be?

    3. Dead people?

    4. If you blink 182 times in a row, that would be hard.

    5. I dare you!

I liked Scott's review, this one seemed more like it had an axe to grind than any real insight or criticisms. The repeated "Down" thing, for example, was used for rhythmic effect, so whether it was repeated 10 times or 40 times is as relevant as whether Travis hit the snare 10 times or 40 times.

I think they did a great job on this release, and I have a new found respect for Blink 182. I never disavowed enjoying Enema, or Dude Ranch mind you, they were both great for the time they were released in, but it's cool to see that they've matured along with all of us.

That is seriously one of the worst fucking reviews I have ever read. Did you happen to even listen to whats going on musically? What about lyrics, so they arent what you want to hear, big deal! If you dont like the lyrical content of something then dont listen to it. This album is 1000X better than their last two albums, musically and lyrically. They actually took their time to work through songs and try different formulas. They could have put out the same old album and be all over the media, but they decided to the album that they thought best. You're just pissed because your "culture" has been made public and the kids that make fun of you are now listening to the bands you like. Get over it.

I do not say this just because your view conflicts with the prior, however because rather than critiquing the album you are just trying to make it clear that you did not find this to be a good album, despite what others, namely Scott, will lead others to believe.

He isn't singing about a fight he had with his mom, he is singing about his mom and dad fighting. Just becuase he is 30 years old doesn't mean he can't write a song about the broken home that he grew up in, considering growing up in that enviornment can affect someone for their entire life. When he is 60, his life will still be affected by his childhood experiences. One's own life is what they know best, and i dont see how singing about your childhood is immature, no matter how old you are. This was obviosuly a very biased review. Good job.

I disagree with this statement. The mainstream went through the `95 pop punk thing prior, so they definately had a taste for this style of music. By the time TOYPAJ was released it was absolutely nothing new for the "masses."
