Review by: Aubin See others by this writer www.mostpreciousblood.com/ (link) Only registered users can post comments Published on November 21st 2003 I have to admit that this year, in spite of the glut of generic metalcore bands, has been an incredible time for hardcore. Exceptional records from Every Time I Die and The Bled are just the most notable of a long list of strong releases from all over the hardcore spectrum. And, joining that list of truly inspired, genre defying records is the newest from Brooklyn's Most Precious Blood. Revitalized by the addition of former One King Down vocalist, Rob Fusco, and driven by the disturbing events that occurred in their hometown, Our Lady of Annihilation is a vicious indictment of religious extremism, coupled with heavy breakdowns, and Fusco's vicious driving snarl. And, unlike some of their peers who have fallen into the metal pit, Most Precious Blood perches themselves precariously on the edge; paying tribute to their influences who range from Sick of It All to the Cure. The highlight of the record is, without a doubt, Rob Fusco's unique and powerful vocal styling; his distinctive voice defined One King Down, and is even more suited to Most Precious Blood's sound. But the rest of the band holds their own with him as well; a raging rhythm section pummels the breakdowns, while simultaneously injecting their breakneck sound with bursts of melody. The riffs are solid, and shred with the best of the metalcore scene, while maintaining their loyalty to hardcore. The controversial album artwork, featuring a sacrosanct religious figure adorned with a bomb is a powerful statement, but no more powerful than the lyrical content of the record. (As an aside, the band was asked to change the cover image for fear of offending people. Instead of changing the artwork, they affixed a carefully positioned PETA sticker over the bomb. Some people are going to be surprised, especially since Most Precious Blood is the name of a Catholic parish in New York.)
Proudly bringing old school to the new school hardcore crowd, complete with an all-star cast
of musicians from Indecision and One King Down, is no small task, but with Our Lady...,
Most Precious Blood has succeeded admirably. After touring earlier this year with Rise Against,
and coupled with a crowd-inspiring release, I imagine we'll hearing much well-deserved praise
for this exceptional hardcore act. Recommended.

In my opinion this cd is considerably better than nothing in vein. Which is how it should be; no one wants to hear a band get worse after a solid debut. I can't see why anyone would like their first cd but not this, sure they got a new singer but he holds his own and then some. Standout tracks for me are Your Picture Hung Itself, The Great Red Shift, Growing Square Eyes, So Typical My Heart. If it's true they sound better live than on the cd I will be very impressed, but I can't see the vocals being as strong live. It will be interesting to see what their next release is like. I'm sure it will only get better. I really liked this, they toured my hometown and are truly awesome live. The singer comes across as an all-round nice guy whoever thought the chick in this band is hot is an idiot. shes good on guitar, but trust me, shes far from hot. Fuck the record quality sucks this is "Aren't these guys on tour with Something Corporate? Man that's a great tour." The artwork is terrible. Does this band do drugs at all? hey guys, more incoherent flames please all i know is that the chick in the band is real hot. Dave Lombardo. That is all. Aren't these guys on tour with Something Corporate? Man that's a great tour. Not one of you may a valid comment to this review. Dave Witte is Burnt By The Sun's drummer. He has been all along and as I read the insert of The Perfect Is The Enemy Of The Good right now, it says his name. Also, don't be stupid, Witte is amazing. Just because you heard Crytopsy at your "metal" friends house doesn't mean he is the best. Gene Hoglan would destroy him. I wouldn't base your decision on just one song you hear. maybe i'm not listening to the right burnt by the sun , what's the name of their new full length?? is it: the perfect is the enemy of the good?? Hey i love this band, its about time some good old NYHC is reviewed on this site. and whoever said that Minor Threat wasnt good needs to get their head checked out... I got this album for free/early i work for a indie record store, and i kid you not i had this in my cd player for about a week straight. its an amazing album, its strong and loud everything a lot of newer hardcore bands arent, id suggest picking this one up, but meh what do i know. Peace Dave witte is awesome. too bad he is only on the first BBTS ep and not their newest full length. Burnt by the Sun is brilliant, Dave Witte blows most other drummers right out of the water. Off-Topic: I went and ordered the Burnt By the Sun someone recommended below. It's a hard one to find, but the samples I found online were pretty amazing. If I get it soon, I'll write a review since December is pretty slow for new releases anyway. what is it with these guys and their album art? i mean, i understand that it's an integral part of the album and can really enhance it, but i mean, if you're going to make a statement, do it with the music. their covers just seem over the top, and it comes off as shock value, which makes it cheesy. Er, that should have gone in the Aquabats review Scott, you are the master of the four star review. the cover art is weak.. the font is a free one from a popular font website. Haven't heard this album yet, nor find the art work offensive. every time i die an emocore band????!!!! Saw these guys open up for Rise Against last month Oh yeah, I wrote the comment about California, PA RAMO! I wanted this one, but it was called by Aubin. Damn Canadians.. Oh yeah, to the guy below, I'm actually 20 and I have an apartment in the beautiful town of California, PA. yep Rob was very good. man i would've want to see the first two bands. i'm always fuckin tardy. and i want to know how you got in janelle. email me at nycanarchy@aol.com. just curious to hear stories of NY. you're right. fortyminuteswest is a joke. i bet you he is 25 yrs old and still lives in his parent's house. Anyway....who else thought this was gonna be one of Fortys reviews? C'mon, I cant be the only one who was surprised by the user name at the bottom. RAMO!!! I DIDN'T SEE YOU! well, i saw MPB and SOIA. i did the favor and bought it early in the morning. man that shit was hot. both bands destroyed the night. i didn't see inhuman though. BTW, i was the kid in the long sleeve grey circa shirt with glasses...until i lost them. damn hardcore dances. since when are ETID and The Bled hardcore? did the "shitty emocore" genre kick them out or something? Catholism is better than Christianity anyway. "Ahahaha, BSD, thats what I love about you, you just keep 'em coming. Don't ever change." this band is boring. I havent heard this new cd, but indecision, and the first most precious blood album were pretty fucking terrible. I mean seriously, they dont really have any real talent, or inovation all. Also the "drawing" was done on photoshop with photographs. I got a flyer for this cd with the artwork on it, and there is no way someone painted the shit, nor did they draw it with colored pencils or pen. Sorry I just couldn't stand reading this shit, because this band is just plain redundant. Ahahaha, BSD, thats what I love about you, you just keep 'em coming. Don't ever change. Well, any type of point you were trying to get across went out the window with "boy-sucking-dick", but your ignorance shines through as brightly as ever. Maybe if you could back up how you live in "good taste" and Catholics don't, you'd have an ounce of cred, but seeing as you were trying to do a one-liner, it didn't work out. Now fuck off, please. And BSD, the punchline was obviously my distaste for catholicism. Maybe if you hadn't warped your head so much huffing butane in your squat you might have picked up on that one. Wow, the great BSD (boy-sucking-dick) doesn't like me comments. I guess I'll shoot myself in the face now. As a catholic, I don't mind this too much. It's an image, and it gets the point across. I agree with Jon. Our Lady is just mediocre whereas Nothing in Vain is probably one of my favorite albums. Seriously, Bombs on religious figures i old news. Really old news. And also... "As a Catholic, you have bad taste as it is..." Is that Salma Hayek on the cover? "As a Catholic, you have bad taste as it is..." As a Catholic, you have bad taste as it is... As a Catholic, I get used to this shit in punk but I don't understand why someone would draw something that seems to be deliberatly in bad taste. the artist is very talented but i'm talking about the idea ... it's fucking retarded. to the person below....if i were able to kick you in the face for that comment. i would. hahaha the cover art is the fucking stupidest thing ever. "hey janelle, you're gonna see SOIA and MPB at knitting factory? i might go. i haven't even bought tix yet." man some of these user submitted reviews suck ass. If only there was some sort of method to sort the user and the staff reviews... hey janelle, you're gonna see SOIA and MPB at knitting factory? i might go. i haven't even bought tix yet. I think everyone is forgetting how great they were with their old singer. The guys are good but goddamn, Indecsion was one of the best NYHC bands ever. I wish they stuck together. one of the hardcore bands going. these guys, and girl, write great lyrics with sunstance and purpose.no whining about some one in grde 4 who dumped you on here.MPB are great. Actually unconcerned... Ebonics? LMFAO! This review was good, but here's how I would make it better: Wow now I'm EXTRA happy to be seeing them tomorrow after reading this. I haven't heard them yet. I knew it was members of Indecision, who were a great band, but ROB FUSCO too! DYN-O-MITE! "I have to admit that this year, in spite of the glut of generic metalcore bands, has been an incredible time for hardcore. Exceptional records from Every Time I Die and The Bled are just the most notable of a long list of strong releases from all over the hardcore spectrum." The music is good, but some of his lyrics are horrible. |
