Rosie ThomasOnly With Laughter Can You Win (2003)Sub Pop Records Reviewer Rating: Contributed by: JiveSide (others by this writer | submit your own) Published on December 9th 2003
There’s a problem with Roise Thomas’ sophomore release on Sub Pop Records. Aside from the obvious, namely that she’s signed to the same label that built its foundation on bands such as Tad, Mudhoney, Nirvana, and Reverend Horton Heat, there’s confusion within the recording itself. I’m convinced that someone dropped the ball and forgot to remind Rosie Thomas that the name of the record is “Only With Laughter Can You Win,” or she truly believes that down-tempo, whispered songs of self-reflection are knee-slappers. The latter doesn’t make too much sense, so apparently the former is the cause of confusion in this album for there is nothing terribly funny or extremely entertaining, in a laughter-inducing kind of way, on this Sub Pop release. But there’s also nothing tongue-in-cheek about the title in connection to the songs, a little pretension maybe, but this isn’t the case either. In fact, the only power this record has over its listener is to lull him or her into a deep-ten-year sleep which can be fun, but there’s no laughter involved in that type of fun. It’s unfortunate that this record is not (at all) exciting, for Rosie Thomas is blessed with a beautiful voice, the production is crisp and full, and the musicianship is fantastic providing a very real life for her songs. And yet she’s confused herself with her own thoughts and misplaced the window to her soul offering a gorgeous record that is unfunny and uninteresting. Superdude = nardwuar just saw her again last night, and was once again taken aback by how beautiful her music is. Shes so charming and wonderful. i love rosie thomas this site should probably stick to reviewing pop-punk and emo albums. you guys (the reviewers and the readers) seem to be blindsided by anything that doesn't fall into that realm. superdude you should write more letters, because they are entertaining. all this horror business my mirrors are black for you you, you don't go in the bathroom with me with you i'll put a knife right in you i'm warning you i'll put a knife right in you i'm warning you I also thought this was gonna be a review of a stand up cd. Dear Rosie, Cool man, this is what this site is about. Yeah, I was really surprised when this record was handed to me. I'd love to hear her make some really great music 'cause that voice is something else. Thanks once again for the comments. Catch y'next time. Peace. oh, no bad comments on the review - you did a good job. I just disagree. Nothing wrong with that. Some of the songs have pretty mediocre lyrics, for sure, and thats why i like he first album much more - but i do like the majority of songs based on songwriting. The system screwed up my equations... Rosie Thomas' alter-ego "Sheila" has nothing to do with this album, so how does the title make sense? I mentioned she has a beautiful voice several times, but Celine Dion can belt like no other but she belts out bad tunes...are you following me here? You need talent songwriting in order to = good review. Talent (bad x songwriting)= bad review. And no, I don't work for Jive records, in fact I'm one of the few people you can trust in the art world. Thanks for reading, thanks for responding. Peace. this cd is fucking fantastic. Granted, her first release is mucg better than this one, but this is damn solid. Rosie has the most beautiful, pristine voice i have ever heard. Sub Pop supplied me with a time machine If the only power it has over the listener is to lull them into a ten year sleep, then how the hell did you review the cd so quickly, huh smarty pants? |
