Epitaph Records -- Millencolin

Considering how big the Offspring seem to be [over 30 million records sold worldwide is nothing to scoff at], this is a surprisingly low-key release. It hasn't been hyped up by anyone at all. There's no music video out. The bizarre single "Hit That" isn't doing much in the way of radioplay. Splinter, the Offspring's seventh [!] studio album feels like a band out of ideas, desparately trying to retain some sort of relevancy.

As usual, the band tries to be "punk" with really good skaterock tracks such as "The Noose" and the 1-2 punch of "Never Gonna Find Me" and "Lightning Rod" - look for them on the next incarnation of Tony Hawk. But for every ripper of a punk rock song there's a lame gimmick one, as well. "The Worst Hangover Ever" is a terrible attempt at ska, and sounds like the kind of song you'd hear on your local classic rock station's morning show as a joke track. "Spare Me The Details" is even more cringe-worthy, with Dexter singing lyrics as bad as "And I really don't want to hear /About her feet all up in the air" and "I'm not the one who acted like a ho / Why must I be the one who has to know." This guy has a PhD? Insane.

Musically it's still the same old Offspring. One would hope that the drumming might have pushed a few more boundaries since Josh Freese replaced original drummer Ron Welty for the Splinter sessions, but every song sounds as basic as it could come. Freese's chops really only get to shine in "Long Way Home," a dynamo of a song with a killer drum solo in the middle of it. Outside of that, I wonder why Columbia was willing to pay for talent that wasn't even used.

Dexter's vocals are stronger than usual, though, and while he still gets eeriely close to "Weird Al" Yankovic in timbre, he can still wail with the best of them. It's just a shame the band couldn't write a better batch of songs for him to bellow.

All that being said, this still is the best Offspring album since Ixnay On The Hombre. There's definitely more of an old-school Epitaph-era Offspring feel for a lot of the faster songs which make them fun as hell, and while the stupid songs are really, really stupid [I won't even talk about the last track], at least there's no "Original Prankster"/"Pretty Fly For A White Guy"/"Come Out And Play" ripoff track. See, there's always something to be thankful for.

well after hearing this album like three times the songs that standout the most, are the noose, cant get my head around you, race against myself, never gonna find me, lightning rod, and long way home, the others are not good or bad theyre in between, i know this band has and amazing album in theyre pocket still, and i agree with the ones who said the worst hangover is and anoying song, my favorite cd from this band is ixnay on the hombre!

but ive still enjoyed every one of this band releases after that record!

(Can'T Get My) Head Around You, Race Against Myself & parts of Never Gonna Find Me r the only good songs on the album. The rest of the album is pure bullshit!! When You'Re In Prision & The Worst Hangover Ever r an embaressment to punk music. The singing & songs have been edited to much & make Dexter's voice sounds like its not rough.
1last thing Da Hui is the worst song ever. The lyrics r crap and the guitar chords r crap

I would laugh my ass off if The Offspring pulled the ol' "bait and switch" and release a punk album. Like, if the last 10 years were just to gain popularity, and then confuse all the fans of their pop stuff by actually releasing another good album.

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, July 7, 2005 at 4:14 PM (EDT)

Ixnay was the last good Offspring CD. This is probably one of the worst CDs I've ever heard. The only thing that pisses me off more than cheap filler is cheap filler with fucked up and inane lyrics. Seriously, if you want to make a 30 minute CD, get rid of shit like Neocon, When You're In Prison, and Worst Hangover Ever.

I've been an Offspring fan for about 4 years. This album isn't that bad. It isn't their best. My personal favorite is Ixnay On The Hombre, which also has my favorite (I Choose) song by them. I'd reccomend it if you found it on sale for a cheap price.

I love the Offspring's old stuff but this new stuff was horrendous. I was dissapointed in Conspiricy of One when it came out, but in comparison it kicks splinter's ass (big time).

offspring aren't NOFX, they aren't like the other pop-punkers of nowdays, they aren't like anyone... if you like them you'll like splinter, if you hate them you'll hate every their LP, but you spit shit on them just for fun, I really don't understand. So what if their video sux, what if their songs fill the radioplay - nobody drives you to hear them.

PS: In my opinion, this is the best offspring album since Ixnay...but who cares

Oh man, I just saw the premiere of the "Hit That" video on MTV.

Well most of the people here appear to be single minded wankers but for the people who listened to the album congrats... I personally really like it, and if you listen to things like the last song for the COMEDY of it then you may enjoy it a bit more... The other songs on it really rock so LISTEN to the fucking thing with some interest instead of just blowing it off three seconds into the song... Most people made up their mind before they even press play FFS....

BTW Offspring don't even need the money so stop calling them "sell-outs"... They only do it because they want to and as they say in their interviews they don't really give a shit what everyone else thinks... I prefer it that way... Go with their own style and not listen to keyboard warriors on the net... and how do you sell-out something you basically invented?

BTW I also agree with the comments about the other albums... If you bothered to listen to all the fucking songs you would realise that songs like "Come out Swinging" are fucking awesome... You're never going to like every song from every band so fucking deal with it and stop bagging them out because you dislike a few of their fucking songs....

good album, i quite enjoy it... the couple of poppy songs on it seem to just add more variety to it rather than throw the mood off like in the past couple albums. some of the songs on americana and conspiracy of one sound like there are 2 completely different bands playing and this album doesn't suffer from that as much, it all flows together pretty well. and when you're in prison is a pretty funny song too.

Haven't heard this yet, but I thought "Americana" was a really rad record. Very political and catchy. As long as we're comparing/contrasting, "Ixnay" was disappointing after their great "Smash" (which followed their great s/t and "Ignition" records).P.S.- Why aren't more people rockin' the first s/t record (which Nitro re-released after Nemesis went belly-up)? You can hear why they were a solid punk band on the d.i.y. circuit- "Kill The President" "Beheaded" "Tehran" etc all rock!

    My Score:

That is pretty surprising that Thrice has sold that few after selling about 45000 opening week. I wonder if they will get the boot. It's so weird that bands like them can't really prosper with the music buying public because it's not like they aren't as commercially accessable as say Linkin Park with the singles they've released. Not that I'm comparing the two bands in musical talent at all, just the potential for crossover fans through radio playlists. I'm just confused what makes certain radio singles a hit while others just fade away rather quickly. It's like the new Offspring single; it sucks really bad but it is all over the radio and I keeping saying to myself "how could something this shitty have that many fans." It must be because mainstream music fans have to be told what to like and therefore have a built in brand recognition much like clothing or whatnot. I have buddies who listen to all the radio trash like Nickleback and all of a sudden they will have an AFI radio song or that stupid Bowling for soup song on a mixed disc. I'll question them on who the band is and they'll tell me they don't know but it is on the radio and is a cool song. They won't buy the full album or even download it and the only way they will ever own a new song by this band is if a new single is released. I'll play them the entire cd or an older one and they won't be interested in it until the radio songs come on.

Maybe it's just me but I can never understand how people can listen to just one song off an entire album before tossing it out when the next big thing comes up.

I've got a soft spot for the Offspring. I consider them responsible for getting me into punk rock about 8 or 9 years ago and have enjoyed all of their records with the exception of that piece of audio diarrhea known as "Conspiracy of One". I enjoy certain aspects of this CD.
"The Noose" is definately the best track on this CD, "Hit That" is allright, and "Cant get my head around you" is great. But there are several songs that are absolutely horrible. "The Worst Hangover Ever" and "Spare me the Details" make me long to jab the sharp end of a pencil into my eardrums.
While this record is definately a step back in the right direction, they're still a ways off from releasing another really great record. One can only hope they go the way of Bad Religion and head back to an Indie (side note: wonder why they never got it in their collective brain to head back to Nitro?) and release a record that completely redeems themselves, I'm sure they've got it in them to release a record as good as Smash or Ixnay.
One can only hope. That said, this record is still somewhat dissapointing, but it isnt horrible. Let's say I'm glad to have burned this (something I'm usually opposed to).

    2. So the hell what if they are older than the 19year old teenie boppers that plague our charts? let them do whaty they want to do! They make music people can relate to so who cares how old they are?

Im sure ive got more to say but that will do for now

i haven't listened to them since americana, i always liked their punkn songs and hated their gimmick songs, don't pick it up on ixnay was a good gimmick song.. it wasn't soo lame it seemed light hearted in a way that bands do when they get bored of being serious.
i thought 'the noose' on this album was actually a really good song and i found all the rest of the songs to sound like a combination of americana and conspiracy... kinda neatly arranged and called new songs. i dunno, i used to love them and will still toss in the odd album, past maybe 2 songs on this one i didn't get into it, it didn't seem as driving and important as they've felt before.

You guys need to stop trying to rip on everyone for no reason. First of all, the guy who wrote this review said "punk" in the most condiscending way. Its on punknew.org for christs sake of course thats what they were going for.

Yes, they sold 30 million albums. Maybe they made the more goofy songs because they thought it would be funny, you know, sarcasm? Personally, I don't really see any credibility on this review. They retained their own brand of sound but still stretched a bit. Just because they are more well known doesn't mean they are bad, if I hear the word sellout one more time I swear I will kill someone. This is punk, what you guys think is punk is a bunch of 18 year olds playing 3 chord progressions in drop d because its easier and screaming about ended relationships or feeling depressed about something. Is it as good as the self titled CD or Smash? Not in my opinion but its pretty close. Listen to it more than once before you make a review jackass, and who made you qualified to make an educated musical review?
