Considering how big the Offspring seem to be [over 30 million records sold worldwide is nothing to scoff at], this is a surprisingly low-key release. It hasn't been hyped up by anyone at all. There's no music video out. The bizarre single "Hit That" isn't doing much in the way of radioplay. Splinter, the Offspring's seventh [!] studio album feels like a band out of ideas, desparately trying to retain some sort of relevancy. Please login or register to post comments. well after hearing this album like three times the songs that standout the most, are the noose, cant get my head around you, race against myself, never gonna find me, lightning rod, and long way home, the others are not good or bad theyre in between, i know this band has and amazing album in theyre pocket still, and i agree with the ones who said the worst hangover is and anoying song, my favorite cd from this band is ixnay on the hombre! (Can'T Get My) Head Around You, Race Against Myself & parts of Never Gonna Find Me r the only good songs on the album. The rest of the album is pure bullshit!! When You'Re In Prision & The Worst Hangover Ever r an embaressment to punk music. The singing & songs have been edited to much & make Dexter's voice sounds like its not rough. I would laugh my ass off if The Offspring pulled the ol' "bait and switch" and release a punk album. Like, if the last 10 years were just to gain popularity, and then confuse all the fans of their pop stuff by actually releasing another good album. Ixnay was the last good Offspring CD. This is probably one of the worst CDs I've ever heard. The only thing that pisses me off more than cheap filler is cheap filler with fucked up and inane lyrics. Seriously, if you want to make a 30 minute CD, get rid of shit like Neocon, When You're In Prison, and Worst Hangover Ever. I've been an Offspring fan for about 4 years. This album isn't that bad. It isn't their best. My personal favorite is Ixnay On The Hombre, which also has my favorite (I Choose) song by them. I'd reccomend it if you found it on sale for a cheap price. well, i've been an offspring fan since 94. I gotta say sum of u are right, that offspring has changed alot but that doesnt change the fact that, they re still good. I love the Offspring's old stuff but this new stuff was horrendous. I was dissapointed in Conspiricy of One when it came out, but in comparison it kicks splinter's ass (big time). offspring aren't NOFX, they aren't like the other pop-punkers of nowdays, they aren't like anyone... if you like them you'll like splinter, if you hate them you'll hate every their LP, but you spit shit on them just for fun, I really don't understand. So what if their video sux, what if their songs fill the radioplay - nobody drives you to hear them. Oh man, I just saw the premiere of the "Hit That" video on MTV. Ok, i finally got a chance to hear this and i must say its quite good, yes there are a couple of horrible songs, but the majority of it is straight up skate punk done very well.... I like it-oldpunker- Well most of the people here appear to be single minded wankers but for the people who listened to the album congrats... I personally really like it, and if you listen to things like the last song for the COMEDY of it then you may enjoy it a bit more... The other songs on it really rock so LISTEN to the fucking thing with some interest instead of just blowing it off three seconds into the song... Most people made up their mind before they even press play FFS.... Jesus Chris I just shit my fucking pants AGAIN. It reeks like a goddamn dead carcass in here now and I need a new fucking pair of underwear. Not only that but I have to take a shower now cause I have shit all up in my ass crack and in the surrounding regions. "All I Want is a pretty good Bad Religion song"-Brett Gurewitz good album, i quite enjoy it... the couple of poppy songs on it seem to just add more variety to it rather than throw the mood off like in the past couple albums. some of the songs on americana and conspiracy of one sound like there are 2 completely different bands playing and this album doesn't suffer from that as much, it all flows together pretty well. and when you're in prison is a pretty funny song too. And all I want is still a great song. "Why is it such a great song? Because it's Offspring's only single under 2 minutes? There's nothing memorable about it. In fact, the "It's all I want" chorus is repetitive chorus is quite crappy. i think this album is awesome and you guys think they suck because they have one or two poppy songs an album..thats real lame because the rest of the songs kick some major ass and their pop songs are still rocking too..its also gay how you say they sold out yet you say their music sounds the same..losers "no yelling? are you a fool?! dexter yells more in da hui than any other offspring song. you have to listen to the album first, idiot. dexter does not have a Ph.D. the guitar player, noodles or whatever the hell he is going by these days does.. i believe. I hate punk. You guys suck and my girlfriend is hot. Haven't heard this yet, but I thought "Americana" was a really rad record. Very political and catchy. As long as we're comparing/contrasting, "Ixnay" was disappointing after their great "Smash" (which followed their great s/t and "Ignition" records).P.S.- Why aren't more people rockin' the first s/t record (which Nitro re-released after Nemesis went belly-up)? You can hear why they were a solid punk band on the d.i.y. circuit- "Kill The President" "Beheaded" "Tehran" etc all rock! this cd sucks, except 'da hui' .. wtf. has anyone else noticed the Offspring are using the EXACT SAME typeface that Bad Religion has been using "How Could Hell Be Any Worse?" Anyone else find this kind of strange? Im surprised Weird Al joining this band wasnt bigger news. Holy fuck your Bracket review did really suck Scott. You seemed like a real peeon with that one. Believe it or not alot of people would consider that disc their best one. Its their most consistent in my opinion. As for the Offspring? My rmate plays the shit out of it, so I've been force feed this album for quite some time now and I have to say for a guy(me) who never really liked Offspring, this disc ain't that bad. How is that for sitting on the fence? Why is it such a great song? Because it's Offspring's only single under 2 minutes? There's nothing memorable about it. In fact, the "It's all I want" chorus is repetitive chorus is quite crappy. Ixnay is the best! Just felt like reminding ya. they had one original album: ignition. since then EVERY SINGLE ONE of their albums has been a reworked version of the last. not that ignition and smash weren't great albums, they were, but c'mon, it's been a decade already... get some new shit. These fellows put the S in SUCK! no yelling? are you a fool?! dexter yells more in da hui than any other offspring song. you have to listen to the album first, idiot. im surprised there isnt any yelling on this album. "True Sounds of Liberty and The Offspring do not sound the same either. The Offspring sounds more like the Misfits than anything and AFI ripped off The Offspring and a bit of Misfits (but mostly offspring)" it's funny how everyone bases this band now and doesn't even listen to the whole record.. These guys used to be okay..but man do they suck now. While we're on the subject...Scott's review of When All Else Fails could possibly be the worst review ever written...period...how can you give Offspring & Blink fair reviews and not Bracket? I personally don't have a soundscan account, but it helps sometimes to know people who do. Other places to find this info are on certain message boards, in press releases, articles in magazines, etc. HITS magazine... - Jordan Pastepunk i'm sorry, but this band is worthless. Where do you find how many albums a band has sold? Where do you get these #'s (Thrice has sold 250,000 copies) I'm assuming you're pulling numbers outta your ass Jonni Cashe was fuckin overated! That number for THRICE is incorrect - they have sold more than 150,000 of the new disc, the band did 70K in just the first two weeks, and benefitted afterwards from good sales promotions. I'm surprised they haven't been embraced stronger by radio though... - Jordan Pastepunk That is pretty surprising that Thrice has sold that few after selling about 45000 opening week. I wonder if they will get the boot. It's so weird that bands like them can't really prosper with the music buying public because it's not like they aren't as commercially accessable as say Linkin Park with the singles they've released. Not that I'm comparing the two bands in musical talent at all, just the potential for crossover fans through radio playlists. I'm just confused what makes certain radio singles a hit while others just fade away rather quickly. It's like the new Offspring single; it sucks really bad but it is all over the radio and I keeping saying to myself "how could something this shitty have that many fans." It must be because mainstream music fans have to be told what to like and therefore have a built in brand recognition much like clothing or whatnot. I have buddies who listen to all the radio trash like Nickleback and all of a sudden they will have an AFI radio song or that stupid Bowling for soup song on a mixed disc. I'll question them on who the band is and they'll tell me they don't know but it is on the radio and is a cool song. They won't buy the full album or even download it and the only way they will ever own a new song by this band is if a new single is released. I'll play them the entire cd or an older one and they won't be interested in it until the radio songs come on. they gave away a million dollars? what? i dont like listening to the offspring, but they dont seem like bad guys. i mean, they gave one of their fans a million dollars of their own money. that's pretty cool No clue about Rancid and the Distillers, but last I heard the Thrice album's done about 70,000 copies, and Thursday has done close to 200,000. Neither is currently on the Top 200, though, so they're pretty much done, saleswise. Does anyone know how many albums some of these artists are selling now that they are associated with major labels? I'm just curious to see if there has been any difference between their previous albums on indies with less marketing and the newer ones with a larger push. I've got a soft spot for the Offspring. I consider them responsible for getting me into punk rock about 8 or 9 years ago and have enjoyed all of their records with the exception of that piece of audio diarrhea known as "Conspiracy of One". I enjoy certain aspects of this CD. No respect for this band whatsoever. Their music is braindead and meaningless. The score is for this The Offspring are far from amazing, incredible, et al. The Offspring write cheap, shitty bubblegum pop songs under the guise of a punk band, because they got a taste of success and can't seem to make a decent fucking record at the risk of losing some popularity. Fuck the Offspring, and fuck their idiot fans who keep throwing fuel on the fire by buying their records, requesting their songs on the radio, and making it seem okay for them to produce one stinking pile of shit after another. Next time you want to waste $20 on something you'll be inevitably disappointed with, call me and I'll set you up with my mom. Please don't give any more of your money or approval to these half assed pretty boys just because they stumbled across a good tune in 1994. the offspring get shit on by practically everybody, underground and mainstream for no fucking reason they are amazing, always have been and always will be so for those of you scared to get your feet wet with some rock songs and maybe even something as frightening as experimental shit and even lash out at them for it then you can fuck off and realize that you aren't a music fan let alone a punk rock fan. speaking of punk rock, the punk songs on this album are absolutely mind blowing. So we can't criticize a band who's more talented than us? Fuck that. I want to....go to the gym.....with henry rollins......and pump each other..... I will admit....I like Ignition and that early song "Kill The President".....but with the exception of those...I think I'll have to agree with Henry Rollins when he said "The Offspring suck...they should be Rosie O'Donnels band for her shitty talk show." ...hold on, i think i have to puke there's a spot in the corner where i always go i like to feed the flies that i know... As a punk record this album really sucks. Ignition, Smash and Ixnay were much better than this one, no doubt at all. The third point is it is only like 32min long, I think that after 7 albums and releasing this album in a major label they could have done a longer record. no, i don't feel like it... There's so many idiots here that criticize every fucking thing imaginable. You think you can do better? Let's see it you ignorant fucks. This band sucks. They don't have anything good out. They never did. They're not doing this to retain relevance... they will forever have the best selling Indie album w/ Smash, and if they wanted to retire and sit on their millions, they could. Yeah... Their first album is pretty bad. I used to dig it when I was younger, but I put it on a few weeks back and was pretty surprised by how awful it was. There's maybe two or three decent songs on it altogether. Man, does anyone still listen to thier first "black" s/t album becuase that was awesome. It's actually a Ph.D in Molecular Biology. The last I checked, there's no rule that requires well educated people to pen well-educated lyrics... Dont write reviews if you dont know shit about the band or their music 1. Splinter is an awsome album! Couple of dodgy song but the fast stuff rules and Race Against Myself is one of the best Slow-style and most powerful rock songs i have heard in a very long time! Am I the only one to think Ixnay on the hombre was (quoting Allmusic.com) "a tedious, turgid mess of anemic punk-metal" " chemestry" (in bold type) ahh the offspring sucks !!!ahh the offspring sucks !!!ahh the offspring sucks !!!ahh the offspring sucks !!!ahh the offspring sucks !!!ahh the offspring sucks !!!ahh the offspring sucks !!!ahh the offspring sucks !!!ahh the offspring sucks !!!ahh the offspring sucks !!!ahh the offspring sucks !!!ahh the offspring sucks !!!ahh the offspring sucks !!!ahh the offspring sucks !!!ahh the offspring sucks !!!ahh the offspring sucks !!! Wasn't this album supposed to have a more saucy name? I dont get it. Everyone boasts the fact that Dexter should be a really smart guy 'cause he has a PhD. People, he has a PhD in chemestry. Being called doctor doest mean that you're automatically going to write better lyrics! Kudos to the comment below. This score is for that. I would rather let Andre the Giant put his whole fist up my ass, elbow deep, than to ever hear another Offspring song. "the worst hangover ever". I have not heard this yet, should i, the living end will be out in feb,2004-oldpunker- true but ofcourse Euroboy is better. chris cheney is amazing I forget when Modern Artillery (The Living End) is supposed to be out in the US, but I ordered it online so I wouldn't have to wait. Someone should really write a review, cuz I think it's a fantastic album. Can anyone play guitar like Chris? i haven't listened to them since americana, i always liked their punkn songs and hated their gimmick songs, don't pick it up on ixnay was a good gimmick song.. it wasn't soo lame it seemed light hearted in a way that bands do when they get bored of being serious. damnit superdude, Oi! is out of style im telling you. just give it up man. please. hate, jesus The new "tony hawk 4" is out duchebag. Oh yeah, is someone gonna submit a review for Modern Artillery (Living End)? Meh ... another boring album This record is about as much fun as having a splinter up the anus, maybe less. hey scott, why dont you start a band since you know everything about music. Oh yeah, is someone gonna submit a review for Modern Artillery (Living End)? I really liked conspiracy of one, and Americana had its moments to. Can't say I agree with some of the comments in this review at all. Looking forward to hearing this for myself. By the way, Splinter is being heavily advertised in Australia at the moment, and I'm pretty sure it will be super popular once they have a video out. True Sounds of Liberty and The Offspring do not sound the same either. The Offspring sounds more like the Misfits than anything and AFI ripped off The Offspring and a bit of Misfits (but mostly offspring) you got my hopes up. the "drum solo" in long way home is hardly a drum solo ps Dear Offspring, Spelled TIMBRE, not tamber. The new souls albumn does not blow IMO... It is definetly the CD that marks the bands growth and maturing as artists and people, and i think its a great cd. :) No, Offspring ripped off TSOL...at least until they decided to turn into a boy band... The New souls record blows. How I Spent My Summer Vacation is 5 times better >>"blink 182 did not invent any kind of sound. offspring did" They have a comercial for the album. I've seen it multiple times. "I got this and the new bouncing souls album in the same day. Needless to say I am a very happy person right now." "blink 182 did not invent any kind of sound. offspring did" album kix ass, what do the words have to do with anything, the songs are all solid all catchy and so what if it sounds like everything else theyve done thats what makes it an offspring record, the punk songs remind me of old stuff which mixes good with the heavier new stuff like cant get my head around you and race against myself, i cant say i like worst hangover ever or hit that though the chorus of hit that is something i wont get sick of and spare me the details? common who cant like that song, the chorus had been in my head all day and as for popularity who the fuck cares, they have enough loyal fans that they dont have to do promotion and they will still sell enough and im pretty sure that they dont care bout popularity either so yeah ur review licked ass whoever wrote the original the above score is for using the word "tamber". TAMBER. Has someone else taken a music theory class? Good album, although I don't know why everyone thinks it's different than the last. Only difference was that the last one had more songs on it. Trim some of those away, keep the fast ones, and you have Splinter. The best band with one of there best Albums yet. Everything about the Offspring is great. "I got this and the new bouncing souls album in the same day. Needless to say I am a very happy person right now." Its so good it gets my thumbs up :-D Me parece uno de sus mejores discos junto con Ixnay, smash y ignition . Ixnay. Smash /splinter. Ignition. The offspring / conspiracy of one. Americana I just came home with this album, and I gotta say IT ROCKS! Don't let the review throw you off, it's an AWESOME album. I got this and the new bouncing souls album in the same day. Needless to say I am a very happy person right now. The single for this album sucks ass and the last song really sucks balls. But it really is a good album. It is their best since Ixnay. It doesn't have enough songs though. this is definitely their best since Ixnay. it blows conspiracy out of the water. it took me a few listens to really get into it, but it's great. definitely good *driving* music. seems like they're going back to "older offspring" with this one. note to scott: its timbre, my man. for the crazy guy two posts down: i think the dropped d tuning is more of a metal thing than a punk thing. This sux !!! im gonna go listen to teh casualties oi oi oi You guys need to stop trying to rip on everyone for no reason. First of all, the guy who wrote this review said "punk" in the most condiscending way. Its on punknew.org for christs sake of course thats what they were going for. "-Every band that i no longer like is a sellout and they are no longer relevant. Everyone probably already knows that every Offspring cd since fucking Smash has it's goofy gimmicky song. If you ever heard the song "Don't Pick it Up" on Ixnay, you'll know what I'm talking about. That's just who they are. Most of their goofy songs they do just because they can. They don't need you to tell them that they are a credible punk rock band. Whoa, that rhymed. Okay, I'm done. the offspring have never really had great songs, maybe a few just above average per record. they just happened to be in the right place at the right time. even for it's day, 'ignition' was pretty basic by the numbers skate-surf-whatever-punk. they've never taken any chances, why should they start now? -Every band that i no longer like is a sellout and they are no longer relevant. Great album. That's all I got. "people still care about this band?" Dexter had cornrows once hehehe... ugh, when does the new green day record come out? I was a huge Offspring fan years ago but this album blows. There's no emotion in their music. It's just dull, uninspired and seems like they were forced to make this record. My favourite song is actually "The Worst Hangover Ever" - it was the only song I could listen through it's entirety. The "punk" songs are terrible. They don't compare to Smash, Ignition or S/T - I give this album 2 out of 5 stars I think they should just call it a day, to be honest. Though the title is "Splinter", it reads like "Spunter". Hey Sneedo, do you wear a speedo? I'd love to, but they're too small to contain my massive cock. I have to wear a parachute for chrissakes! this band is so fucking lame. music for dorks. the guy was right about it being their best record since 'ixnay', but that review is such crap. its an awesome album, not 1 bad track on the record, at the lesat average. and i cant wait to see em live when they come to NY again to tour. Lenny Kravitz didn't write are you gonna go my way faggo, and no noone has It seems offspring will always have their amazing songs and their crappy songs. If you haters actually listened to songs off Americana like "Staring at the sun" or songs off Conspiracy of One like "Come Out Swinging" ud realize that Offspring is still quite punk. The new cd has a few stupid songs, but if u look beyond those there are still some solid tracks ("The Noose","Lighting Rod",etc). Offspring are still working hard as ever and I cant wait for a U.S. tour early next year :) This is a great album. buy it. Credits for Blink's pass??? "Offspring are like blink 182. blink 182 did not invent any kind of sound. offspring did. 3 years ago i would have gone out today and immediately bought this album, but now i think i'll wait till i happen upon it. or download some tracks. i'm one of those who actually enjoyed americana tho. it really had some good songs on it, despite what some of you say. of course, ignition was their best. that and smash. |
