John Vanderslice is indie rock's most underrated boy genious. On his 2001 Barsuk release "Time Travel is Lonely," Vanderslice takes us through Antartica with lyrics supposedly based off of letters his brother sent back from an journey to the frozen continent to the south.

What makes Vanderslice's work so amazing is his creative use of music. Most instruments he uses are standard: percussion/drums, bass, keyboards, guitars, and a little trumpet every once and a while. The difference is that Vanderslice orchestrates the music into poppy charts that deviate from your standard 4/4 indie/emo tracks.

From the opening acoustic riff of "you were my fiji," to the cheap sounding keyboard drum pattern in "gainesville, fla.," I was not disappointed once. The lyrics fit perfectly in how they're sung to complement his musical inventions. While most lines follow simple rhyme, they seem new and inventive, and even still poetic when paired with Vanderslice's soothing melodies.

Either you will love John Vanderslice, or you will hate him. What truly matters is that you give him (and this CD specifically) a solid listen. That is all. End transmission.

    My Score:

yeah really, after what he went through with the death of snyder, i really think its gonna be tough on him. i hope he can come back and dominate, cause he had the potential, and i think its what he deserves. wether its what happens, we'll have to wait and see.

anything else happening in hockey that needs discussion?

I think we'll have to wait and see. Heatley will be back, but I don't know if he can be the same player he was before. I know I couldn't be.

they might trade it, cause theyre a team that needs the quick fix. but their scouting really isnt that good. they made a few good pics but they have a problem hanging onto them.

my question is: whats gonna happen with danny heatley?

I was thinking that they'd trade it away, but who knows.

    My Score:

They could just do the draft lottery again, but if the Pens win the first time, they should keep the order. If Florida gets the #1 pick again I'm going to be sick.

    My Score:

well Forty, there is actually the remote possibility that pittsburgh could land both Ovechkin and Crosby. with the lockout, what are they gonna do with the draft? well one suggestion was that they leave the order of the 2004 draft and use it again in 2005. so if the pens get number 1 pick in 2004, they might get it again in 2005.

if thats the case its good news for pens fans.

    My Score:

Cape Breton isn't a very good team though, are they? I know hockey news had Fleury pegged as a high pick for a while. Hopefully the Pens will land Ovechkin.

im a cape bretoner here... fleury at best was mediocre... obviously he was the consensus #1 pick so this is a tough argue but i think his high status was because of his outstanding WJC performance.. but as far as his junior career is concerned, he was nothing special... and that will continue... hell to earn a contract when every scout is watching me (WJC's) i would play my ass off too... fans must understand that sports is about the market value... theodore, giguere are classic examples.... players will play their very best if it means a new contract or potential raise is at stake... other than that, they shit in their pants.

    My Score:

definitely a cap, without it the league is dead.

the pens might bew near the top of that list but i fell that they should be allowed to stick around because they have some history. its teams like columbus, florida, tampa, san jose and pheonix that need to go. nobody cares about hockey in those places so why should they have a team?

Posted by FortyMinutesWest on 2003-12-24 15:28:05
    My Score:

I'm not sure if getting rid of some teams would fix all of the problems, plus my team (The Pens) would be first on the chopping block if that happens. There needs to be salary cap.

    My Score:

Fleury is the future, he's made some amazing saves since he's been here, but the defense is just horrible, aside from Brooks Orpik and Tarnstrom. Fleury has all the tools to be a star goalie, speed, hockey smarts, decent puck handling skills, and great positioning. He makes some mistakes, but keep in mind that he's only 19. He had guys like Luc Robitaille shaking their heads in his first start. Believe the hype.

    My Score:

give fleury a team and we'll see what he can really do.

how about that lock-out? who thinks there's a chance it can be avoided? im betting it cant be.

and my proposal to the league is that when the lockout is over they should shrink the league to somewhere between 20 and 25 teams, so the talent isnt spread so thinly, then they do a big fantasy draft! all the players in the pot, and teams draft them! re-arrange the league! woohoo!

    i'd be down with that.

    Posted by boba_fett on 2003-12-24 15:18:37
    My Score:

fleury isnt the future. he's overhyped. he isnt doing anything spectacular in pittsburgh. mind you pittsburgh is the worst team in the league.

fleury will be good, but i dont think i'd go so far as to say hes the futur of the league.

the problem with the league these days is that there's too many mediocre goalies. the reason why i think the devils can establish a dynasty is because theyre the only team with a true 100% star goalie.

    about Brodeur being underrated:

i think that was true up until he won gold with canada, then he won his third cup, and then the vezina. i think that alot of people used to underate him, but people really started paying attention when he showed up and did what patrick roy couldnt do, get the gold.

and i think everybody should know that brodeur is gonna break most, if not all of roy's records. why? cause he didnt spend 3 years playing for a shitty habs team. im die hard habs fan cause im from montreal but, well, if they make the playoffs its because they beat all the other bad teams, not the good ones. theodore is the future.

curtis joseph is the most overrated goalie in the league. why? cause he played for toronto and they think theyre the center of the universe.

    leafs suck.

I've only listened to this album a little, but Life and Death of an American Fourtracker is a fucking brilliant album (featuring vox from Kori of MoS and lyrics by John Darnielle).

I've also seen Vanderslice live twice and he's kicked ass both times.

Plus he runs Tiny Telephone and is a dope producer. Better recognize.

The Flyers are completely inept when it comes to goalies. Jeff Hackett? C'mon, this is why they won't win the cup.

I remember about 6 years ago, the Beezer and Cujo were both free agents...Philly decided the Beezer was a better choice....how wrong they were. The Leafs got 4 great years out of Joseph (including a playoff win over Beezer and the Flyers), and the Flyers have gone through about 4 goalies since.

Has he done anything since the incident when he was with the Soo?
