Street Dogs - State of Grace

Hey guys, guess who’s back. If you said Vision, give yourself a pat on the back, you’re a great guesser (or you read the title of this review). If you said Yahoo Serious, I don’t know what your problem is, but I’m sorry I got your hopes up. Vision is one of the more underrated bands out there these days. Even after their stint on Epitaph and a solid release “Watching the World Burn”, Vision remains unheard by quite a few people. Hopefully with a new label and a new record, this will all change.

Right from the get go there are obvious differences between “Detonate” and “Watching the World Burn”, most notably, the production. While the band’s Epitaph release was rather clean sounding, “Detonate” is grittier. This can either be a positive or a negative depending on personal preference, I don’t particularly mind the difference, but I think the production could’ve been better. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this band, Vision plays a catchy mix of melodic punk and hardcore with some great sing along moments. Dave Franklin has one of the most immediately recognizable voices I’ve heard in a long time, you know it’s Vision as soon you hear him. His powerful vocals lend themselves well to the lyrics, mostly about personal struggles and overcoming obstacles. “Let’s brace for impact because we’re all in this together, at least that’s what we said when things were much better. Now noting is safe and my sanity is borrowed, and I’m drowning in mistake and I doubt I’ll see tomorrow.” (“Faster than Fate”) When it comes to musicianship, this band is topnotch. The bass playing, guitar work, and drumming are very creative, especially when placed up against similar bands.

So there you have it, another good album from a good band. Whether this one garners the band the attention it so sorely deserves remains to be seen, but those who do pay attention will be rewarded with a fine album.

This band didn't do anything for me when I saw them back in highschool and I know I'd hate 'em now that I'm a jaded old fucker who only likes rocknroll(AND ROLL kids...this Emocore crap is just "rock" at best...you need the AND ROLL!) and wants to set kids with lip rings and black hoodies on fire. But I'll always love NoFX(though I once said that about Rancid, and now look).....5am, time to fall asleep to the soothing sounds of the Oblivions.

you know... the 1-10 number ranking system in the place where you write comments doesn't really match the star system by the actual review. it should really be .5 - 5.0 with half point increments.

you all know i am right.

This MP3 starts out strong. The first 18 seconds are solid and then but by 44 seconds in... yawn yawn yawn. Look, nice fellows. Fine live show. Good to jump around in a pit to. But c'mon. They aren't "overlooked." Local kids love 'em, 'cause that's what local kids do. They are proud of their scene. But some bands just don't have it. This band is fine. I don't hate them, but they are a perfect example of a band that is exactly as popular as they should be.

I'm curious, was Peter Ventantonio on any of their earlier releases or did he leave the band before they recorded?

By the way, the Yahoo Serious line got my fucking hopes up. With great movies such as Young Einstein and Mr. Accident, I don't understand why he went the way of Carrot Top.

I don't understand how they go unnoticed. They have toured with Agnostic Front, Bouncing Souls, Strike Anywhere, and that's just a few. It's crazy that they are still so unknown. I agree that The Kids Still Have a Lot to Say is their best work, but all of their shit is topnotch. I have nothing but good things to say about this band.
