| Ryan's Hope / Down In Front / Kid Presentablelive in Chicago2003 live show Review by: greg0rb See others by this writer Ryan's Hope (link) Only registered users can post comments Published on December 30th 2003 I gathered the gang up and headed down to the familiar and lovely Fireside Bowl to see Ryan’s Hope play their first gig at the famed venue, as well as take in some new rock. Let’s begin. Ascending / Descending was the first band up. I didn’t have a big problem with this opening band’s music, which was that kinda tech melodic hardcore stuff, but the singer, when he wasn’t screaming, reminded me of a crappy band…not sure which, maybe Godsmack. Also note that the bassist used to be in Dearest Fae I believe, a really psycho hardcore band, and now he’s in this band. Oh well. This band apparently has only been together for 20 days or something (they only had a 4 song set), so they will likely improve. We’ll see. The Evil Us’s were next, and they reminded me of Strung Out or old Lagwagon back when they were metal. They were not hardcore, but punk, often with double-time beats, and then add metal riffs onto that. At times maybe they could even be compared to Thrice with the guitars’ technical harmonized parts, but these guys didn’t have any screaming. Worth checking out for sure, but sometimes it seems they were just showing off their chops whether the song benefited or not. Next was Kid Presentable. When they started off, I was horrified at the singer’s voice. He seemed to improve his pitch as the set went on, but this had already turned me off to them. They seem to be fairly young band, playing decent rock with emo leanings. Nothing that really grabbed me, but perhaps with time… Then came Down in Front. These guys played a tight set of Alkaline Trio-ish punk rock. Their singer had a good voice and a big range, but it seemed to wear on him as the set went on. He said he was taking over all the vocals that he shares with the other ill guitarist, and it’s lucky for him he usually doesn’t have to do all that, because many more sets like that one may require him to join Skiba in vocal chord destruction. Check these guys out - melodic rock that maintains an edge thanks to aggressive guitar parts and an energetic and skilled rhythm section. Finally it was time for Ryan’s Hope in their Fireside debut. Their fans came out in droves and everyone was excited for the occasion. For those of you that are unfamiliar, Ryan’s Hope is three hardcore guys playing melodic punk/emo rock. The hardcore leanings (and C tuning), along with sweet breakdowns and kick-ass solos set them apart from other punk/melodic/rock/emo/whatever bands.
The band kept the set going at a good clip, playing a variety of songs from their two EPs -“Home Tonight” and the title track off the Every Place I Hide EP, and “Death Machine”, “Kristen”, “A Change in Everything” and the title track off the Weighing What Matters EP, and also the three tracks off their full length’s demo. One of those newbies featured an appearance by the singer from Article 57 who did some bloodcurdling screaming. They closed with my fav, “Nick Springer”, with its multiple buildups and those sweet metal riffs at the end. Also, the band’s stage presence didn’t disappoint, as the guys showed their hardcore experience by lifting guitars high in the air and headbanging in a circular fashion. Rock.

I thought Ryan's Hope played an excellent set at the Fireside. One of the best I've ever seen actually, which is an amazing feat considering it was their first gig at the Fireside. Kudos to the band! All three of them are great guys. I sincerely encourage all of you who posted to try to actually get to know these guys. It seems like a lot of you (ie. David and That Guy) just like to hear yourselves talk. Get off the internet and do something with yourselves. peace. ryan's hope is playing the BOTTOM LOUNGE in CHICAGO ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21ST!! details will arrive shortly on the site.BE THERE!!! they are nice guys, your probably just a moron.. i met ryans hope at this show, and they were a bunch of dicks. especially the drummer. he sucks anyways saturday, jan 17th at the mason hall in joliet, come see yes, everyone knows that ryan's hope was a shitty soap opera but that's has nothing to do with the band. Ryan's Hope was a cheesy fucking soap opera back in the 80's. i heard ryan's hope is playing the metro in late march?!? does any one know if this is true? Hey that guy, you might as well have just put this in your post. Ryans hope ryans hope ryans hope ryans hope ryans hope ryans hope ryans hope ryans hope ryans hope ryans hope ryans hope ryans hope ryans hope ryans hope ryans hoperyans hope ryans hoperyans hoperyans hoperyans hoperyans hoperyans hoperyans hoperyans hoperyans hoperyans hoperyans hope To the guy a couple of posts down, I'm arguing on a different point than about the actual band, I have ABSOLUTELY nothing against them. I've never even heard them, so technically I'm not helping get their name out. In fact, I've never even typed thei name. I heard they named they're band after a friend of theirs who died. great review, i havent seen an uproar like this in a while, all because of a band? who is this band, they're fucking genius!! keep talking it up, your only helping them Alright, this is off comment. Wow, it looks like someone is jealous of the fact that ryan’s hope has a lot of fans in the area. Can you please tell me why it is that you think that people should pick “a knew local band to start kissing ass to”? Who kisses ryan’s hope’s “asses” anyway? People actually like there music, how’s that kissing ass? And yes, them playing “like 4 shows on the” warped tour does mean something, if they weren’t any good then why were they picked to play? Can you answer that? just by browsing through these comments i have one suggestion: kid presentable is pretty good. cool digs. Wow, I'm not even going to TRY to argue with your incredibly flawed logic. How old are you ? I mean honestly, you just basically ignored all of my points, and restated you ORIGINAL flawed argument. Do you know what name dropping is ? It's when you say the names of bands in order to associate yourself with them, therby becoming "cooler". ex. "Me and Converge hung out".(no we didn't) That is irrelevant in the context, and would be considered name dropping. I said "here's where I name drop" to be ironic, because I in fact NEVER did that. Let's get straight to your last remark, and skip the crap. I wouldn't want to confuse you. I personally know Ryan's Hope and I can honestly say, that I believe they could give a rat's fucking ass about being a local band, or any other local bands. The local scene for them is just a crutch. Until they get picked up by some label. Everyone should stop kissing their ass, and start picking a knew local band to start kissing ass to. Oh yeah and playing like 4 shows on the Warped tour, does not mean that your not a local band or anything anymore special then any other band from their area. What Im saying is their is a FUCKLOAD of bands around Chicago that have alot more to say then Ryan's Hope!! Ok, so it makes me fanboyish to say that people need to come out to a show ? How so ? Please explain that to me. For me, I'm just trying to get in a plug for a show I have personal interest in. It's not really fanboyish considering I'm good friends with 2 of than bands and will be setting up equipment and am responsible for passing out flyers. to That Other Guy: Fine, I give in, I refuse to argue for a point I simply have no passion for. I have a point, though it's not as valid as the guy who said that stuff about chocolate. He's right, it's not my business to regulate what is reviewed. But we should make a compromise, don't sound so fanboyish next time, ok ? The thing that made Down in Front seem like Alkaline Trio to me was mainly the vocals. These guys were slightly less simple in guitar work than the trio, but when that dude went into his high vocal range, it was skiba all the way. I think that it all depends on the person who is listening to the music, and what grabs their heart the most, i don't really like reviews too much, because some people have been (well in my own opinion) wrong about some things. I for one really liked Down in Front alot, and didn't really hear too many "Alk-trio'ish" wanna-be styles, Ryans Hope also played a good set, and evil us's, i love their metalish riffs, but hey this is just me! (plus i came kind of late so i didnt see the other bands) reviews of smaller shows let me know about bands i may have never heard of, but might enjoy. Down In Front broke up... shame. I actually liked them more than most of the Pop-Punk crap that this city seems to produce. speaking of local IL bands, A Death in California is touring around the country right now,so if they stop at your town you should see them. good hardcore. I've seen down in front before. No. Me. Gusta. Most of the reviews I read are for bands I havent heard. I could care less what someone thinks of a band I like or dislike. I do like to found out what type of music and who a band is similar to in a review and both of these were done in the review, I dont know if the review is accurate because i havent and probably wont listened to these bands but my personal tastes have nothing to do with a review I read. Kudos to the reviewer. They should change their name to "Ryan's Dope". That would be fucking sweet. Why the hell are people complaining about a local show review? Whenever Ryan's Hope gets huge and starts playing big tours and all you kids start wetting your panties whenever you see them, you won't be complaining. Every band was once a "local" band so quit getting your panties in a bunch over stupid things like this. If you don't want to read a "local" show review then skip over it, I am assuming you can find some review of some shitty band that all of you kids like. Can't we all just get along? these comments are rather entertaining! yes bloodcurdling is good when it comes to screaming. good review. all of the people that said they'd never heard of ryan's hope.. well they have heard of them now. Ok, let's clarify this some MORE !! I never said anything about the bands needing to be big, I never mentioned Finch, and I never tryed to oppress anyone's freedom of expression. I simply said that people need to realize that you shouldn't review a local band for a national site. This band has NEVER been to Texas. They've NEVER been to any part of Colorado that I frequent. They've NEVER been to Lousiana. I have nothing against local bands, I in fact love local music, but that's where it stops. Support them, go their shows, but don't basically suck their collective dicks on the internet. The review was very fanboyish, until I read that greg0rb was a friend of the band. Then it was downright ridiculous. I've seen Second Class, The Trademark, Density, B Team Starter, Dover Drive, The Yetis, Innermost Aggresion, Next to Nothing, Pride Kills, and countless other LOCAL bands in and around Houston, do you see me posting reviews of their shows ? No. If they opened, sure I would, but NOT A HEADLINING SHOW. And NEVER if I was a friend of the band. There need to be limits on everything, and if you don't understand that, you need to take a step back and look at life. The Evil Us's rock. Their style of music is quite unique, and i recomend that you check them out. opening bands never exceed your expectations for the headliner, learn how to do a better review jackass. let's all commit suicide at the same time all across the country... Secondly, I wouldn't say that I was ranting as much as I was trying to explain that punk rock is about free expression and you're trying to construct a wall around someone's use of free expression. Greg wrote a review for a show regarding a band he really likes. Regardless as to whether or not they're going to get big or are big or are local. He wrote the review. That's punk rock, and it's helping punk rock. Not standing off to the side saying, "they're local, whatever." People do what they're going to do. so, THAT GUY, you know all the bands on the side review thing over there? To Thatother guy: I chose to use the language that I did on my post because that is how I speak, and I'm not really all that interested in impressing people as you seem so adamant in doing yourself. There are people who enjoy using words other than your colorful expletives. i didnt know you had to be on a major label to be punk rock. I can name tons of local bands with more heart than say..... a simple plan, or finch.. you probably think those are punk bands, its so sad how the lines have been blurred in this genre.. all the sub-genres you've created, and all the fashion has corrupted the essence of what punk rock used to be... listen as i rant...and i agree they wont be LOCAL for long, but they sure as hell will never sound like finch You're welcome. OH MY GOD !! A FEW WARPED TOUR DATES !!! ryan's hope isn't just some local band. they played a few warped tour dates! just because you haven't heard of them doesn't mean that other people don't want to read or see a review of their shows. it's because of reviews like this one and the write up that they had in AP magazine that get people to start paying attention. so thank you greg0rb. Also, using big words doesn't make you seem smart. Did you write that with a thesaurus ? I understood every word, but honestly, do you speak like that in real life ? No. I don't even know you and I can say that. No one thinks you're any smarter. To the guy directly below me: For the gentleman who thinks this site shouldn't post reviews of local bands, it is my assumption that you feel embedded in "punk rock”; that you are punk rock. That’s great. Creating limitations for bands aspiring to progress past their current state in any medium, this being websites, by saying there should be a rule against local shows being reviewed is anti-punk rock. Wasn’t the point of punk rock, at one time, to break down barriers and elevate many of the stigmas people had (eg. shock people out of their shells) and not to block or "hate" on bands doing what they do? That was always my take on things. I happened to be at this show and I think that this review was very accurate. I didn’t really care much for the other bands but the evil US’s played a good set and ryan’s hope kicked SOOOO much ass. I’m pretty sure that ryan’s hope isn’t going to be just an local band for long. hey even sickboi's favorite band, new found glory was local once, so get off your high horse, you dont know shit "Kid Presentable" Never heard of any of these bands. Which is saying quite a bit. Maybe there should be a rule against local shows being reviewed ? Maybe I should write a review of the upcoming Trademark/Density/Quinns show at the Glass House. Wait. No, I WON'T, they're local. wow, this review was so written by the one of the kids in the band. Lagwagon were metal? ones of people care about this show |
