Remembering Never is back, and they’re pissed. But the reasons have changed this time around. Their last album, “She Looks So Good In Red” was filled with angry lyrics about relationships gone awry and the ensuing revenge. However, this time around the band tackles more serious issues such as religion, politics, and animal rights. The press release states that Pete (vocals) has dealt with the previous problems and moved on. Imagine that, a band exhausts one topic and moves on to another, I can think of a few people who need to take a hint. The band wasn’t very happy with the way their previous album came out, so they immediately started working on this one and you can hear the frustration.

Right from the start this album has a more angry sound to it. While their last album had a sense of melody similar to Poison the Well and their ilk, “Women and Children Die First” comes out swinging. “For The Love Of Fiction” takes issue with organized religion, basically stating that it’s control stems only from fear. The music is much heavier than anything they’ve done in the past, but there is still a bit singing thrown in. However, the sung vocals sound better than before, and better than most of the bands who do the singing/screaming thing. Previously the music had been centered on melodic interludes; this time the focus is on sheer heaviness with bits chaos plugged in. The music matches the mood of the CD well, and it carries Remembering Never past the preconceived notion that they are yet another emotional metalcore band. The band makes it’s declaration in the final track “Serenading This Dead Horse.” “Fall to your knees, fall to your weakness. It has become your standard, consuming every word. Meaningless words form meaningless sentences. Where is the message? Where is the progress?” This song actually contains one of the most melodic passages on the album, but it is quickly followed by one of the heaviest.

Overall, I enjoy this substantially more than the band’s past work, and I think others will as well. Aside from the lyrics, the band provides explanations for each song. This has been done before, but I really wish more bands would do this. Not so much because it helps people comprehend the lyrics, but because it’s a window into what the band was thinking when they wrote these tracks. The most interesting explanation comes at the end of the lyrics. This appears under the final track, “Serenading This Dead Horse.” “How long will we in this phase of hardcore? We are a guilty party as far as not doing our part, but this is a different day. Being in a hardcore band makes it my privilege and responsibility to share ideas rather than worry about what color she looks good in.”

"with a cover like that, i know it's a shitstorm.

i don't mind having bad covers

but i mind when they fucking suck."

Excuse me, you have no idea what you are talking about!! The design studio who did the cover art work is really doing a great job! www.asterikstudio.com Check out their work! The RN is not their best, sure but they do a great job.

As for the religion topic, I do think it's easy to attack Christians like that. I mean for a long time, I have been picking on Christianity myself but then I started to believe in God. I consider myself spiritual and not religious (eventhough some Christians will tel that's imposibble to be spiritual and not religious, anyway...). Although, I reject most of the things in religion. I think people should get informed better before attacking something. Also, I used to have their two previous records, aren't someone in the band thanked God or Jesus? What's funny is that the dude at Asterik Stuido are Christians.

But we are here to talk about the record eh, well I didn't buy it, someone burnt it for me!! I had a few listen and so far it's ok. makes me think of some Botch and the likes style sometimes, which i am not a big fan I have to say. I don't really like when there is some fuck or motherfucker in some lyrics, it's sounds pretty poor langaue to tackle a topic.

    *consider themselves religious

Posted by Anonymous on Friday, February 6, 2004 at 12:52 AM (EST)
    My Score:

most people go to church because they've been conditioned to go. fear of hell has nothing to do with it. ask almost anybody on earth who considers themselves religions if they are going to go to hell and the answer is no, or course not. very few people actually believe they might go to hell. those are the ones who will go out of their way to make sure it doesn't happen. id say that most people who are religious have a set of beliefs that they follow, but chances are they think they're going to some sort of heaven regardless. most people can't rationalize that they could concieveably be the scum of the earth.

    My Score:

to me, my faith (which is undergoing some serious crises and changes) isn't based in fear at all, but the hope that beyond the crass nature of this life, there is a truth greater than all of us
i don't subscribe to fundamenalism, either
that's the really-streamlined, reader's digest version of my take on the subject, for what it's worth
the institutions of religion have certainly done some bad things in the past, and have manipulated people through fear, but like everything else in which they have involved themselves, the human race has, to an extent, screwed up religion
(i'm currently reading "On Religion" by John Caputo, which makes some interesting commentary on the subject; except for the chapter on Star Wars, that part's crap)

    My Score:

I don't see how saying religion is based on fear is like saying those others things. I know there are plenty of well rounded religious individuals, but fear does play an important part in the church. How many people would go to church if they didn't fear going to hell?

Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, February 5, 2004 at 11:04 PM (EST)
    My Score:

i'm not even religious whatsoever but it pisses the shit out of me when bands put out songs that bash on religions for bullshit reasons. saying that all organized religion is based upon fear is saying that all christians emulate hitler or all muslims aspire to be bin laden.

not all religion is based upon fear, the extreme conservative or traditionalist religions might seem like it, but you can't judge a religion by the members who make the press. for every paranoid moron out there basing his views on some religion, there are a hundred other members of the same religion who are perfectly well-rounded people.

"im pretty sure until the end is together for the soul purpose of having a straight edge band in south florida. not to further music, just to make it with a message."

Ok first off I will never give a band respect that I find to be a complete rip off of another band. And I dont really indentify with messages bands like until the end promote. To me a message that matters is not whether you drink or dont, smoke or dont, eat meat or not or any other various lifestyle fad that some kid clings on to so he can feel like he is a part of something new and cool. All the clone bands like Until The End will either talk about this or some mysterious group of people called "them" that are out to get us all. Tough guy hardcore bands are paranoid and dillusional. There is not a secret group of madmen out to ruin any of our lives. The only person that can bring you down is yourself. Stop acting like you are repressed and take responsibilty for where you have placed yourself in life.

"You have to understand though, once you hear something so many times you tend to get sick of it. For example, I love Poison the Well's "The Opposite of December" but most of the bands emulating that sound bore me to tears. And I've liked Swedish metal for years, so meh. I know your comment wasn't directed at me, but I felt the need to respond."

I understand what you are saying and i feel the sameway, the whole emotional/singing/screming/hardcore deal has gotten old. It doesnt really bother me when someone likes something or doesnt. It bothers me when the same same people that were into certain types of bands make fun of people that like the same bands a year later. Music should not be a tool of status, you are not the bands you listen to. Plenty of shitty people like good bands, plenty of good people listen to shitty bands. The ones with the biggest mouth always have the least to say. again this was not directed at you forty. randomdipshit
